For and against of living on your own From the beginning of society, one of life´s goals is to live on one’s own. Many people wish for a place to call “home”. Personal and economic independence are very important in one´s life, because it shows social status, personal self-esteem, personal progress and determination that distinguish adults from kids. However, independence is a great step that could involve risks and sacrifices as well as benefits and satisfactions. There are some advantages and disadvantages of living on your own. There are several advantages. To begin with, you can do whatever you want. Your behavior is not a problem, because you are alone. Parties, reunions, and being able to come home at any time are common activities that are oftentimes forbidden when you share the space. Secondly, you experience an incredible personal growth. Living alone is a great way to learn responsibility. What is more, you seem forced to develop housewife skills, unless you have enough money to pay someone for help. Finally, you would have a perfect place for studying or doing activities which require concentration. Without anybody around there are less distractions and noises than a place where a family lives. On the other hand, living on your own also has some drawbacks. Firstly, loneliness is prevalent in independent people. They spend several hours per day alone and this often leads to bad consequences. For instance, depression and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) are common examples. Another major disadvantage is that you must do chores, and these activities are time consuming and exhaustive. Instead of dividing the tasks into the amount of residents in the house, all of them must be done by the same person. Last but not least, living alone could be dangerous in some aspects. If you get sick, there will not be anyone to take care of you and also, if someone enters illegally into your house you will be alone to face the criminal.
