The food surpluses that farming created allowed people to settle in one place and have more
children. Farming settlements grew into towns. Other occupations became possible, such as that
of an artisan.

Where there were rich soil, a dependable source of drinking water, and building materials, cities
could develop. Cities had large public buildings and markets, a variety of occupations, and
governments to keep order and provide services.

During the Bronze Age, people were able to make metal weapons and tools, which were more
durable. These and other valuable items were traded between cities. This trade helped to spread
innovations such as the wheel and axle. Trade brought wealth to some, who joined the more
powerful of the newly established social classes.
