MISSION STATEMENT The vision of the Newman Centre is to be the spiritual home for Catholic students on the University of Toronto’s downtown campus while the mission of the Newman Centre is to provide a variety of opportunities for students to live out the teachings of Jesus by exploring, deepening and celebrating our Catholic faith; by serving those in need; and by experiencing the richness of a community rooted in Christ. We accomplish our mission in three key ways including the University Parish, the Student Campus Ministry and the Chaplaincy Outreach to Students.

NEW TO THE COMMUNITY?

Each Sunday, a Pastoral Council Member (following the 11 a.m. Mass) and a Student Campus Minister (following the 7 p.m. Mass), will be on hand in the Cardinal Newman Room to welcome and assist any new members.

M y dear parishioners,

―The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.‖ These wonderful words from St. John’s prologue (Chapter 1) give us much to ponder during the seasons of both Advent and Christmas. In

the midst of the hustle and bustle of this time of year, when everyone is told to say, ―Ho, ho, ho,‖ I am often feeling, ―No, no, no‖ – no to the frantic activity of December, no to the commercialism, no to the emptying of store shelves during Boxing Day sales. But still, it is so hard to stay immune to the ―Ho, ho, ho.‖ A wise person in my life often asks me: ―So, Michael, where do you see hope in these times?‖ Now, that is a good question to ponder. With little effort, I can see so much hope – and the first place I start is with this community. So here it goes: I see hope in the many parishioners who are committed Christians, participating in our Sunday Liturgy even when it involves travelling significant distances; I see hope in the joy of our little ones, who gather at the front of the church before going to share their own Liturgy of the Word with their catechists and friends; I see hope in the parishioners who make the effort to walk the talk of our faith by serving in our Outreach ministries; I see hope in the faith that is so frequently manifested by the young men and women of our Student Campus ministry team, especially when we gather together in prayer during our weekly team meetings; I see hope in the efforts of our Liturgical Ministers, who share their time and talents in the ministries that make our Sunday masses vibrant and faith-filled; I see hope in the commitment of the staff of the Newman

Centre, whose work—although unknown and unappreciated by so many—is seen and appreciated by our God. These are just a few of the things I see in the Newman Centre parish community—a community where the Word made flesh still dwells among us—that give me hope. Sunday, November 27th wasn’t just the start of the Season of Advent; it was also the advent of the New Roman Missal. To be honest, I was surprised at how well parishioners seemed to adapt to the new translation. However, please consider the words of Neil McCarthy, in his blog of November 28th on the Archdiocesan website www.archtoronto.org: ―For many of our priests this past weekend would have been like their first Mass all over again as the 2nd edition was the only one they ever celebrated. So if you felt a little awkward responding, "And with your spirit," just imagine what it was like for a priest to have to navigate through a huge number of changes.” To that I say, ―Amen.‖ I think I was more nervous at the 11 a.m. mass on the 27th than I was on the day of my first mass on May 12, 1991! Wishing all of you a holy Advent, a Merry

Christmas, and a peace-filled New Year!

Peace and prayers,

Fr. Michael Machacek.

Roman Missal

With the 3rd edition of the Roman Missal in English now in effect, below is a helpful list of resources to consider for developing one's understanding of the new mass translation: Helpful material, such as FAQ’s, parish resources, and timelines, can be found at: http://www.archtoronto.org/romanmissal/index.htm A very good article called ―Embracing Change,‖ by Christine Way-Skinner‖ can be found at: http://www.archtoronto.org/romanmissal/pdf/EmracingChange.pdf This site, from the Canadian Conference of Catholic bishops, gives many in-depth insights into the new translation: http://nlo.cccb.ca/index.php/roman-missal Other helpful sites include the following: Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales - www.liturgyoffice.org.uk/ RC Bishops’ Conference of Scotland - http://romanmissalscotland.org.uk/ US Conference of Catholic Bishops - http://old.usccb.org/romanmissal/ Please see www.newmantoronto.com/community/blog for Fr. Michael’s September 25th, October 23rd, and November 6th homilies on the New Translation and the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM). As was mentioned in Fr. Michael's homily of September 25th, the new English translation follows the translation methodology of "formal equivalence," which incorporates a more literal word for word translation from the original Latin text.

Advent Reconciliation Service

Please join us at our Advent Reconciliation Service, to be held on Wednesday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. Four priests will be present for this celebration. “A humble & contrite heart I will not spurn…” – Psalm 51

As people of faith, we are called to be mindful of the ways in which our actions and our failures to act affect our relationships with our brothers and sisters, and with our God. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of

honesty—it is about having the courage to take an honest look at who we are, and bringing this to God.

Jesus Christ came into the world to save all people from the power of Satan, sin, and death. The purpose of his ministry was to redeem us and reconcile us with the Father, especially through his saving death and resurrection.

On the evening of his resurrection from the dead, Jesus appeared to his Apostles and gave them the power to forgive all sins. Breathing upon them, He said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven. If you retain anyone's sins, they are retained.” (John.20:22-23) Through this Sacrament, Christ forgives the sins that we, the members of his Church, commit through our actions or omissions, and restores us to a life of grace.

This Advent season, let us prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming into the world by humbly receiving his unfailing love for us in the beautiful Sacrament of Reconciliation. Let us wait for the Lord with hope, as our hearts are full of grace, and we are restored as children of the Most High God!
