The Session welcomed five new members into the life of the church. The Worship Ministry Team reported on the numer-ous events occurring over the holidays as well as events being planned for early 2020 including the Chancel Choir Cantata on December 14.A motion from the Bold Initia-tive Committee was approved by Session to lend support to Habitat for Humanity’s Neigh-borhood Revitalization Project in West Southern Pines; as well as two other Southern Pines based programs – the MALES of Distinction program working with at risk teenage males to dis-courage delinquency and boost self-esteem; and the Trinity Sub-stanceAbuse & Misuse Initiative, a faith-based addiction recovery program.The Clerk reported for the Co-ordinating Council on elder as-signments in 2020 and distribut-ed the first draft of the Manual of Administrative Operations for Session’s review and comments. Presbyterian Women were ap-plauded for their hard work and success raising approximately $9,000 at this year’s craft fair.

Maybe like you, I can’t believe Advent is here. Is it me or does the pace of life seem to be increasing? In the midst of the fran-ticness of life, Advent can be an invitation to slow down, and re-center. It can be an invitation to those who are afraid and un-certain about the future, to hear a word of hope. This Advent we will explore a sermon series entitled, “Being a People of Hope in a World of Impatience.” The series will focus on Isaiah 40:1-11.As we look at Isaiah 40 together, it is im-portant to know the history of this text. In 587 BCE, Jerusalem was conquered and destroyed by the Babylonian Empire. The leaders and a significant part of the pop-ulation were marched off to Babylon. In the first 39 chapters of Isaiah, it chronicles this time of uncertainty, fear, and concern as the people live in exile. This all chang-es in chapter 40 of Isaiah. It is the “hinge” that turns them toward hope. Isaiah 40 is a word of hope for the present about the future. Isaiah 40:1-11 centers on the hope of the Jewish people, that better days were coming even in the midst of exile.

John Calvin wrote that Isaiah 40 “compre-hends the whole Gospel in a few words.” (John Calvin, Commentary on the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, Vol. III). I wonder how these words of hope from the ancient proph-et Isaiah might be relevant to us today. In a world which seems impatient, frantic, and unsettling…maybe we need to hear God’s call to hope.I want to especially invite you to look at our Advent Schedule in this issue as we cele-brate Christ’s birth.

Meal Ministry TeamThe team has been busy restocking the church freezer with good food packed with love! Two-serving portions of beef and macaroni, chicken divan, mac and cheese along with assorted soups are available in the freezer. Please re-member friends and neighbors among us who are recently home from the hospital, rehab, or living alone this winter who might appreciate you stopping by with a simple meal. These packaged meals can easily be stored in the freez-er then, when needed, thawed to heat and eat.

Pull out your red scarves, sweaters, hats and prepare your best FA-LA-LA while you mark your calendar to join Brownson friends in Christmas caroling on Sunday, December 8 at 3:30 PM (to carpool, meet in Ashe Street lot). We will bring Christmas cheer to members in area nursing facilities and some who re-main at home. We’ll return in time to enjoy a delicious chili supper at 5:30 PM in Fellowship Hall. Led by Joe Currie and Mary Margaret McNeill.Dialogues: Faith and Science (Conference Room B) – A class that fosters dialogue around pertinent topics from a faith-based perspective. For this study, we will look at the benefits and challenges of science for Christian faith. Facilitated by Austin Vernon, Bob Andradé, Kay Bullard, and John Bullard.Men and Women’s Bible Class (Cornerstone Room 217) Formerly known as the Men’s Bible Class, uses The Present Word curriculum to facilitate their discussions of the Bible. Theology on Tap – A Bible study for the men of the church that meets on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 PM at Table on the Green - 2205 Midland Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374. Led by Charles Harris and Gerald Ostlund.Men’s Prayer Breakfast – This group meets the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 7 AM at Sizzlin’ Steak or Eggs. Women’s Gathering Reunion

The Women’s Gathering held a tea and reunion in November. The quilt was made by the 2003-2004 group as an “outward and visible sign of the love and learning pieced together” as a class. The Book of Job Bible Study

The Book of Job Bible study concluded on November 19, followed by a fun outing at The Sly Fox. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know one another, asking tough questions, sharing personal expe-riences, and growing in our faith as we deeply discussed the Book of Job. We will have another Bible study opportunity in January 2020, so please join us!

During the season of Advent, you are invited to participate in a daily Advent devotional as we prepare our hearts and minds for the com-ing of our Savior. Three different devotionals (described below) will be available for pick up in the Atrium.

BLC continues to be a preschool on a mission. Our preschool collected sup-plies to create hygiene kits for children at Southern Pines Elementary school. Our Pre-K children assembled 23 kits and got to experience how we can share the love of Jesus by sharing with others. We are also collecting coats this winter to help support the missions of the church. December brings so many wonderful and exciting events for us at preschool. Getting to participate in a variety of Christmas activities from building gingerbread houses to paja-ma day for the Polar Express, and ulti-mately getting to share the true mean-ing of Christmas with our preschool children brings so much joy to our staff and our preschool families. You are all invited to come enjoy our Christmas program “A Very Special Birthday” on December 12 at 6:00 PM in the Sanc-tuary. There is nothing sweeter than watching the Christmas story unfold through these precious children.

Advent Devotionals

B Straw for the Manger

A family Advent devotional that engages families with the biblical truths of Christ-mas as they wait for the arrival of the Sav-ior on Christmas Day. This devotional walks through the themes of hope, love, joy, and peace with talking points and activities for families to enjoy together.

Advent is a season of waiting, but is idle wait-ing what God wants of us? In preparation for the coming Messiah, we wonder together—what things can’t wait? This daily devotional follows the Revised Common Lectionary for Advent Year A and will invite you to read, reflect, pray, and color your way through the end of 2019. This is a great resource for older youth and adults, but parents could also in-vite children to help them color and embody the weekly active prompts.

During this holy season of Advent, we are in-vited to follow Jesus’s command epitomized by Matthew 25:31–46 to love one another and care for “the least of these.” The Rev. Sherry Blackman, a Presbyterian pastor, chaplain and award-winning writer and poet, chal-lenges us to fill our days of Advent with sim-ple, practical and loving deeds that help our neighbors — calling each act of kindness a piece of “straw” for the manager to make a soft bed for the Christ child when he arrives on Christmas.

Preschoolers began November with a thankful heart, painting beautiful leaf art-work and recalling things for which they are thankful. Some of the answers that resounded through the room were I am thankful for “my mommy,” “my sister,” “my daddy,” “Jesus,” “my church,” “my friends,” “food,” “singing,” and many more. We wrapped up our season of Thanksgiving with Preschool Praise singing in worship on November 24, where our little friends sang “If You’re Thankful and You Know It.”

Advent is always such a special time in the life of our church as we lead into the cele-bration of Christ’s birth. It is important to us that families are ushered into a time of Ad-vent together and have time each day to fo-cus on the real meaning of this busy season. The Celebration of Advent, on December 1, was just that. It was a time for families to come together for fellowship, making of Ad-vent calendars, and singing Christmas car-ols together. We have been most grateful for the support of the Flower Ministry in years past, who so generously gave their time and energy in making live wreaths. This year we did something a little differently and made Advent Calendars instead. For the 25 days leading up to Christmas Day, each family will have an envelope with a scripture for family devotion, and a kindness card, or a way to pass kindness to others. We hope this will encourage families to share the spirit of Christmas and the love of Jesus with each other, their friends and the community.

Kids Connect meets every Sunday evening and is always a joyful occasion! We have been walking through the book of Romans, talking about how we should be generous (by making cards for those in need), truth-ful (by playing the gossip train game), and loving in all that we do. The Bible says that “the children will lead us,” and we are see-ing that first hand in the life of Brownson Church. Through their love of each other, dedication to the Lord, and kindness to-wards other people, they are showing us what it means to let the light of Jesus.

January 17-19, 2020, we will have our annual high school youth ski trip to Beech Mountain! Please turn in a $50 deposit ASAP to reserve your spot for this fun adventure.

The Youth Group delivered handmade crafts to homebound members of our con-gregation at Belle Meade, the Coventry, Elmcroft, Gracious Living, Penick, Quail Haven, and St. Joseph on November 10. According to Joyce Stutts, a resident of Gra-cious Living, ”We sometimes feel left out of activities because we can’t go and do like we used to. It was so sweet for the kids to come to see us and good for them to see how other people live. We really appreciated their visit and hope they will come again.”

Appalachia Service ProjectJune 14-20, 2020, we are offering a high school mission trip experience through Ap-palachia Service Project. This organization provides youth with hands-on oppor-tunities to help alleviate substandard housing in rural Appalachia. Canto ZenzeroBrownson Concert Series

On Saturday, October 19 Brownson was graced by “Canto Zenzero” also known as “The Singing Gingers.” Canto Zenzero has performed nationally and internationally and are known for bringing audiences a diverse repertoire of music. They performed music from various time periods that included Classical Opera Arias, Musical Theatre/Broadway, Celt-ic, and Show Tunes. On Sunday, October 20 they sang during both worship services along with the choir and provided a beautiful offertory. This concert was part of the Brownson Concert Series and was a huge success! Thank you to all who attended!

Christmas in South-ern Pines, a festive musical presentation by the Brownson Chancel Choir is Saturday, December 14 at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary. On Sunday, Decem-ber 15 during both worship services a similar Cantata will be shared with the Congregation.The choir has been working extra hard in preparation for this year’s Christmas music. Christmas in Southern Pines will feature Moore Coun-ty Brass along with percussion, organ, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, and harp! Please invite your friends and family for a wonderful weekend of music to get you in the Christmas Spirit.

Sign-ups for shifts began December 1 after each service in the Atrium or contact Sara Conti direct-ly to sign up ([email protected]). Please plan to give a couple of hours to help this holiday cause!Volunteers are also needed to help with setting up the shopping areas on Wednesday, December 4 from 8:30-12:00 PM. In the coming year, we will collect diapers in February to help supply the Coalition with their needs throughout the year.

This year the Brownson Learning Center (BLC) will be hosting our Mitten Tree. Any-one who would like to donate mittens, hats, scarves, or gloves is invited to drop them off in the foyer of BLC. All donated items will be delivered to the Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care by our youth in January.
