MAKING CONNECTIONS TO LEARNING STANDARDS

The New Victory Theater is New York City’s first full-time performing arts theater for kids, their families and classmates. Since it opened in 1995, The New Victory has quickly become an integral part of the cultural landscape in New York City, presenting a full season of adventurous multidisciplinary works from around the globe and close to home. The New Vic seeks out sophisticated, thought-provoking, professional productions that are as artistically rich as they are entertaining.

The international productions on New Victory stages inform and inspire the work of the award-winning New Victory Education Program through a dynamic combination of school and public programs. Our school programs serve over 35,000 Pre-K through 12th grade students and teachers each season at almost no cost to the kids or their schools. Many of our partners are NYC-area Title I schools, with a high percentage of students who would be unable to experience live theater if it weren’t for The New Victory. The enthusiastic young people who greet you on your way into the theater are part of the New Vic Usher Corps, a 3-year program that provides 27,000 hours of paid employment for 75-80 high school and college-age youth each season. Families who attend the New Vic together combine their theater-going with New Victory Family Workshops, as well as free in-theater engagement activities. Together, these nationally-recognized programs exemplify the organization’s long-standing commitment to the intrinsic value of cultural participation in the lives of young people and families.

Available to Education Partners for every show in our season, New Victory School tool Resource Guides provide educators with comprehensive materials that explore the artistry and key themes of each production. Filled with practical, ready-to-implement activities that allow any teacher to incorporate The New Victory into their classroom, the New Victory School tool Resource Guides are designed to enrich the performance experience before, during and after the students’ trip to the theater.

New Victory School tool Resource Guides align with the Common Core State Standards, New York State Learning Standards and New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. We believe that these standards support both the high quality instruction and deep engagement that The New Victory Theater strives to achieve in its arts education practice.

CLOSER LOOK AT CAPS FOR SALE

• Adventure Theatre MTC was established in 2012, when the companies Adventure Theatre (est. 1951) and Musical Theater Center (est. 1986) joined forces to provide quality programming to families in the DC Metropolitan area. They now reach 75,000 kids, parents and teachers annually!

• CAPS FOR SALE THE MUSICAL is based on a children’s book Caps for Sale, written and illustrated by Esphyr Slobodkina in 1940, which won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958. In addition to being an author and avant-garde artist, Slobodkina was also a celebrated feminist.

• DID YOU KNOW: In 1937, Slobodkina collaborated with author Margaret Wise Brown on the first American children’s book illustrated with cut-paper collage. It was titled The Little Fireman.

“Caps! Caps for sale! Fifty cents a cap!” says the Peddler. He wears his wares on his head, stacked high as a sycamore tree. Gray caps, brown caps, blue caps and red caps balance atop his checked cap so he's free to wave at passersby. Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the classic book, CAPS FOR SALE THE MUSICAL jumps off the page and onto the stage in this new musical from Adventure Theatre MTC (Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds, New Vic 2014). With song, dance and live accompaniment, this treasured tale bursts with happy harmonies, merry melodies and quite a bit of monkey business!

Prior to exploring CAPS FOR SALE with your students, find out how much they already know about Page-to-stage theater and Musical theater.

What is your favorite illustrated storybook and why?

Do you prefer books with or without illustrations and why?

Have you been to the theater before?

Can you think of a story you like that was turned into a movie or play? When you watched it, how did you feel? Were there any changes from the story that you did or did not like?

Have you seen a musical theater production before?

Can you think of a song that tells a story? What is the story it tells?

In CAPS FOR SALE THE MUSICAL, Pezzo’s dream is to travel the world. Do you have a dream for when you grow up? What is it?

WHAT DO YOUR STUDENTS KNOW NOW?

MUSICAL THEATERMusical theater brings together acting, live music and dance into one all-encompassing production. Singing conveys a deeper level of emotion, allowing the characters to express themselves beyond dialogue, monologue or soliloquoy. CAPS FOR SALE THE MUSICALwill have three live musicians accompanying pre-recorded tracks to support the performers.

PAGE-TO-STAGE THEATER Page-to-stage theater is a technique often used to bring children’s literature to life. Artists work to capture the tone and spirit of the underlying material with respect for the original intent of the author. Through a collaborative design process, they incorporate many aspects of theatrical production, including character development, technical elements and storytelling to effectively connect with audiences. In CAPS FOR SALE THE MUSICAL, the creative team has developed a script based on all three books in the Caps for Sale series, as well as honoring the book’s visual artistry in its set and costume design.

UNIT PLAN BRAINSTORM

Check out these ideas for how to incorporate CAPS FOR SALE into a unit plan! Then, use specific activities from this guide that we recommend for each topic.

PAGE-TO-STAGE THEATER (ELA)Dive into the world of page-to-stage theater by going over the source material with your students! Read Caps for Sale with your class and talk about how certain aspects and characters might be brought to life on stage. Want to explore more? You can also read More Caps for Sale and Circus Caps for Sale for additional context and inspiration!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST DREAM? (VISUAL ART)In CAPS FOR SALE THE MUSICAL, Pezzo sells caps to pursue his dream of traveling the world. Ask your students to draw their biggest dream. Encourage the use of a variety of art mediums to see what works best for their masterpiece, i.e., construction paper, clay, digital art, newspaper and more. Finally, have each student share with the class. What dreams do they have in common?

MAKE YOUR CLASSROOM A MERCHANT FAIR (MATH, SOCIAL STUDIES)Pezzo the Peddler sells his caps to the townspeople in hopes of making enough money to travel the world. Give your students different colors of construction paper and markers, then have them create 1) a visual art piece and 2) their own forms of currency. Then have your students use the money they created to purchase the artwork of fellow students! What can they buy? Who set the best price?

ACTIVITY: HOW MANY CAPS?

Have your students do this activity to explore the art of cap balancing!

Materials: Paper bowls (the less design, the better!), markers

1. Distribute paper bowls to your students. Give each student time to decorate their own bowl. Then, allow them time to enjoy trying them on like caps!

2. Have a Cap-Stacking competition! Using their own "cap" as the base, see which students can balance the most "caps" on their head (see photo below for an example of the best cap-stacking strategy)! Peers can offer their cap to friends to be part of a balancing act.

3. Add additional challenges to the competition, such as walking across the room with caps on, or drawing a monkey on the board with caps on, for even more fun!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSHow many caps do you think Pezzo will stack on his head? How do you think they will stack all those caps onstage?

PERFORMANCE REFLECTIONFollowing your trip to the New Victory, you may find that your students want to discuss the performance and their own opinions. Allowing your students the opportunity to articulate their own thoughts and hear the ideas of their classmates will increase the impact of the theater experience.

1. Engage in a conversation with your students regarding their thoughts and feelings about the play. Use the following questions as prompts:

a. What was your favorite part of CAPS FOR SALE THE MUSICAL? Why?b. What part of the musical made you smile?c. What did the musical make you think about?d. Do you have any questions about this musical? Are there any questions you wish you could

have asked the performers?

2. Provide students (either as one large group or in small groups) with a large piece of butcher paper. Have your students draw the town square of CAPS FOR SALE THE MUSICAL.
