IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT WEEKEND FULL OF BIKING, CANOEING, PADDLING, RUNNING, CLIMBING, SCRAMBLING, BUILDING, CREATING, NAVIGATING, GETTING OVER OBSTACLES AND GETTING OUT INTO NATURE – PLUS FOR THOSE UP FOR IT, A BIG BUSH CAMP OUT, BBQ AND MORNING DAMPER INCLUDED!

Remember to tell your Mum and Dad: this weekend it’s their parental duty to actually let you run wild!

Enjoy!

MUM AnD DAD THE KAOS WEEKEND AIMS TO ENGAGE CHILDREN WITH THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT WHILE INTRODUCING THEM TO A HUGE VARIETY OF ADVENTURE PURSUITS IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT THAT MAKES THE MOST OF ANGLESEA’S NATURAL PLAYGROUND.

Connecting our kids with nature is an important developmental issue. It touches on mental health, physical wellbeing, education, community, recreation and the protection of natural resources. Importantly, the weekend will give those parents who have less experience or confidence in taking their kids into nature, a safe, comfortable setting in which to ease their way into the outdoors.

It’s all about facilitating play in nature and creating pathways to engender lifelong habits of activity and enjoyment in the outdoors.

And of course, reclaiming some quality family time, spent in the outdoors having oodles of fun!

We thank you for coming and we’re

sure your kids will too, as you create childhood memories for them

that will last a lifetime.

GET YOUR ROBIN HOOD ON! Equal parts skill and thrill, archery is a challenging sport that tests participants’ strength, skill and technique. Using re-curve bows, kids shoot for ‘Olympic Style’ bull’s eye targets and develop technique under the watchful eye of our instructors. Kids will learn the different parts of the bow and arrow and will be shown the correct procedures and techniques for loading and releasing.

IT’S A WELL-KNOWN FACT THAT FOOD ALWAYS TASTES BETTER IN THE BUSH! Bush Cooking takes place at our onsite campfire. Once kids have a handle on safety, they are shown how to make damper – maybe even how to turn that into a bit of bush pizza to give it some extra pizazz (the pizza then enjoyed as a snack). For older participants, instructors will teach the best way to make a bush peppermint billy tea. Yum.

TO FULLY ENTER INTO THE OUTDOORS SPIRIT we’d love everyone to join the Saturday night Camp Out. It gives families the opportunity to enjoy sleeping in a tent under the stars in a safe environment. It also includes a short, guided bushwalk hosted by Bushwalking Victoria to and from the campsite! The campsites will be hosted, and all tents and sleeping mats are supplied. **Camp out must be pre-booked. Check your location. Leaves from Event Hub.

CLIMBING COMBINES MENTAL, TECHNICAL AND physical aspects in a way few sports do. The wall is five-metres high with three faces providing challenges to suit all skill levels. Instructors guide students how to use ropes and harnesses and master the basic skills, from belaying to movement and technique.

ACTIVITIES LOCATION(MAP REF)

HOSTED AT THE EVENT HEADQUARTERS, on ‘The Green’ Basecamp Active will be a zone full of activities for all, but especially relevant to the youngest of the younger generation with things to do suitable for 2-5 year olds. Your child (of any age!) can enjoy:Indigenous hand painting; Environmental Craft; Jumping Castle; Hula Hooping; Sponge Bob; Fishing Victoria display.

ESTUARY DISCOVERY IS ALL ABOUT THE SPECIAL place where the river meets the sea. Kids will wade in water up to their knees to catch and release juvenile fish using nets, investigate marine adaptations through a beach comb & treasure box, and also find out about the importance of dune systems. Younger participants may play an environmental game.

CRATE CLIMB INVOLVES TWO CLIMBERS attached to safety ropes by rear-mounted harnesses and protected by two belayers (instructors). The climber uses the milk crates, stacking them on top of each other one at a time to a maximum height of 12 crates. This activity teaches kids the value of teamwork through trust and communication, as well as the value of patience.

IT MIGHT SOUND FUTURISTIC, but essentially geocaching is like a cross between a treasure hunt and orienteering! And the difference is that participants use simple electronic GPS devices to find items in hidden ‘caches’, which are spread throughout the YMCA Anglesea property. It is an excellent way to explore the natural environment and expose kids to the processes of decision-making, problem solving and communication.

THE GIANT SWING IS EXACTLY what it sounds like as much fun as it sounds! Participants are fitted with a full-body harness, attached to the swing. The swinger is then hauled up by their team, rising to a giddy 18 metres in the air. When they are ready they then release themselves using a trigger mechanism and… WHHEEEEEEEEE!!!! Instant awesome. The activity is careful tailored so that kids can experience a personal challenge whilst being supported by the empowerment of effective teamwork.

MOUNTAIN BIKING MAXI IS a longer ride than the Mini, encompassing trails both on- and off-site, and focusing on intermediate and above mountain-biking skill levels. There are a number of natural landscape challenges to take on over the course, including some hills, with the ride progressing in difficulty as riders build confidence with their off-road riding skills.

NOTHING SCREAMS ‘CHILDHOOD ADVENTURES’ like building a hut or a cubbie! It’s always been fun for kids to use what nature has provided (without destroying anything living, of course) to build their own shelter and we are going to take it to the next level. Working with others in a group will have kids thinking about the best way to build a cubbie with the natural materials they will be supplied.

THE FLYING FOX IS 76 METERS LONG! You are released, whizz down, then the brakes of gravity take over and pulls up just before the tree. Low ropes test your balance, strength and flexibility. with 12 activities or obstacles in a circle, where you work as a groups to help each other not touch the ground.

BECOME A BUSH DETECTIVE and future guardian with Eco-Logic. Find out what native animals live in the bush around Anglesea and how they operate. Participants will be guided on a ‘tracks & traces walk’, have a close look at Eco-Logic’s preserved bush animals and play some environmental games. Kids will learn the importance of preserving habitat for our unique fauna.

VERTICAL CHALLENGE TESTS THE STRENGTH of climbers not just physically but also mentally. This is a Challenge-by-Choice activity where participants set themselves a goal to get from the ground to the top of the obstacle – 18 metres high. Much more than an individual undertaking, this is an activity that sees kids drawing upon the support of the group who encourage and belay from below.

AT FIRST SKATEBOARDING might not seem a natural fit for an adventure weekend, but we want to encourage kids to find adventure wherever they can, and sometimes that means in the middle of the city. We begin right at the start, with kids being taught the basics of skating from getting comfortable standing on the board through to learning how to roll in on our ‘fun box’.

THESE SESSIONS WILL BE SHORT RUNS (1-2km) along flowing single-track around Anglesea, with instructors discussing the basics of trail running, and handy techniques for running in natural environments. The activity is about showing how running is way more fun when it’s enjoyed away from roads, out in the fresh air and stunning scenery of the bush! Parents are welcome to run along with their kids.

MOUNTAIN BIKING MINI IS an off-road cycling activity run on-site that gives kids an introduction to mountain biking. It is a short course that’s suited to younger and/or those less experienced in riding a bike with gears on uneven surfaces. We welcome the opportunity for kids who can’t ride a bike to take part. Kids are taught techniques to deal with riding on uneven surfaces.

KIDS WILL LEARN fishing basics according to sustainable “catch and release” principles. They will to learn how to use bait and then remove a hook from a fish’s mouth so that it can live to swim another day. Rods, reels and bait will be supplied.

THE SESSION ASSUMES NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE or experience, and is the perfect way to dip your toe into the exciting ocean that is the world of sailing. Participants need to bring a hat, towel, sun-smart clothing – rashies are perfect (no singlet/tank tops please), a change of clothing, enclosed footwear for sailing (e.g. crocs, old sneakers or wet boots) and a change of footwear. It is mandatory that all children be accompanied by a parent during this activity.

STAND UP PADDLE BOARD – called SUP by the cool kids – is exactly what it sounds like: a board that you stand up on and paddle! Kids stick to the flat water of the estuary and Anglesea River so that the instructors of Go Ride A Wave can teach the basics of this growing sport. Session includes a mix of skills and games to ensure that everyone has fun. Our first priority, though, is safety, followed closely by fun. Kids must be accompanied on the same board by a parent or guardian.

ANGLESEA IS FANTASTIC FOR SURF LESSONS. Conditions are ideal for kids starting out with a safe beach – one of Australia’s best learn-to-surf destinations! Our host, Go Ride A Wave, specialises in beginner surf lessons conducted in waist deep water. All lessons include either a long sleeve rashie or wetsuit and a soft beginner surfboard . Parents are welcome to come in the water and help their kids take their first wave in!

BASED AT THE FAR END of Coogoorah Park, canoeing is set in a sheltered, flat water environment on the Anglesea River and estuary. Participants will learn paddling skills as well as focus on cooperation and communication between co-paddlers.

Did you know? that Anglesea – this beautiful adventure hub – used to be known as Swampy Creek? No wonder they changed the name to Anglesea back in 1884! It now carries (we think appropriately) the tagline: “fun and adventure by the sea.”

D is for Date,

O is for Orientation, like a north arrow;

S is for Scale,

A is for Author, who made it;

Things you need to know

IS THE EVENT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES? Anglesea camps often host children with disabilities and we adhere to and promote access-for-all. All Anglesea Camps are well equipped to host children with disabilities. Unfortunately, not all activities will be able to host all children with disabilities, pending an individual’s requirements. We encourage parents to contact the YMCA Anglesea to discuss requirements, and we will do everything we can to be inclusive and make arrangements so your child can enjoy adventures at Kids Adventures Outdoors. All venues do have Universal Access for people with disabilities.

CAN I DROP MY CHILD OFF AND LEAVE THEM AT THE EVENT, PICKING THEM UP AT THE END OF THE DAY? No. Parents must accompany their child/ren and are responsible to and from activity sessions. Parents can, however, leave their children

with instructors during activities and use that time to duck off for a coffee.

So, essentially, you have approximately an hour and a bit to do your thing,

but you must return promptly to collect children at the end of each session.

WHERE DO I PARK THE CAR? If you have booked on-site accommodation at YMCA Anglesea or Beachfront Caravan Park, you can park there. It is only a short walk into town to the Anglesea Green and Event Hub. Please get instructions from each venue when you make your accommodation booking. For those attending for the day only, there is parking available next to the Anglesea Green in front of the Anglesea Lawn Bowls Club. Alternatively, if that is full, park in one of the side streets and walk to the Green, (pay attention to any parking restriction signage).

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING? A sense of Adventure! Wear sturdy sneaker-type shoes (no open toes/thongs) that can get dirty. Comfortable clothes that can also get dirty – we advise against dresses. You will need sunscreen and a hat. Think as though your child is off to a PE class on the

oval. Kids should take a water bottle to each activity – hydration is important!

There are no equipment requirements as all activity-specific gear will be supplied. If participating in activities using a harness (Giant Swing, Crate Climb, Vertical Challenge, Climbing Wall), children should wear leggings or long shorts.

Your child may also prefer to wear a BYO wetsuit for the water based activities.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? For any activity involving a harness (Giant Swing, Vertical Challenge, Crate Climb, Climbing Wall) wear leggings or long shorts. Otherwise we suggest comfortable clothing (think PE class), that you are happy to get dirty! Shoes MUST be closed-in. Think sneaker, NOT thongs.

We strongly recommend Sun Smart approach, with brimmed hats and sunscreen.

DO I NEED TO BRING A BIKE FOR THE MOUNTAIN BIKE SESSIONS? No. Bikes will be provided for all mountain biking sessions. Children can bring their own bikes to ride if they feel more comfortable, however the suitability of the bike will be at the instructors’ discretion and children may be asked to use a GORATS supplied bike.

Page 12: ADVENTURER’S HANDBOOKkidsadventureoutdoors.org.au/anglesea/wp-content/... · it’s going to be a great weekend full of biking, canoeing, paddling, running, climbing, scrambling,

DO ADULTS HAVE TO BE PRESENT DURING AN ACTIVITY SESSION? No, for most sessions adults do not need to be present DURING the activity (although you are welcome to stay and play). However, please note that there are some activities that parents MUST be present at. They are: Stand Up Paddle Board, Sailing and Camp Out.

ARE THE INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED? Yes. Every instructor will have first aid qualifications and be experienced in their particular activity, including any specific qualifications that are required i.e. high ropes, Bronze Medallion, etc.

HAVE INSTRUCTORS HAD ‘WORKING WITH CHILDREN’ CHECKS? Yes. Every instructor and host will have a current Working With Children check.

WHAT AGE DO YOU HAVE TO BE FOR THE ACTIVITIES? We do not have any strict age requirement for activities. We ask that parents judge their child’s capabilities and interest for particular activities, regardless of age. Most activities are suitable for primary-school age and older. However, children younger than this are encouraged if parents feel them capable.

I HAVE A TODDLER/S. ARE THERE ANY ACTIVITIES / ENTERTAINMENT SUITABLE FOR THEM? Yes. There will be lots of activities happening at the event hub. A jumping castle, mini golf, face painting, fishing, climbing to name a few.

CAN I BUY TICKETS ON THE DAY? Yes, however only if the event is not sold out. You may be limited as to the activities that have space in them. We strongly suggest buying tickets beforehand if you are hoping to buy on the day, please ring YMCA Anglesea before arriving.

FOOD & CATERING IS FOOD INCLUDED IN THE TICKET PRICE? There are plenty of shops across the road from the event hub and we encourage you to support Anglesea traders. Alternatively you can bring a picnic lunch. Those choosing the Camp Out option will have a Bush BBQ at the camp out site.

IF I SELECT THE CAMP OUT OPTION, IS FOOD INCLUDED? Yes, a Bush BBQ is included in your purchase of a camp out ticket.

IF I SELECT TO STAY OVERNIGHT AT THE YMCA IN CABINS/DORMS, OR AT THE CARAVAN PARK IS FOOD INCLUDED? Yes, a Continental Breakfast

is included in your purchase of your accommodation.

WILL THERE BE FOOD AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE DURING THE DAY? Yes. There is a huge array of shops directly across the road from the Event Hub.

CAN WE GO OFF SITE TO GET LUNCH / DINNER? Yes. you are welcome to explore the Anglesea township and its culinary offerings. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and take-aways. If you are a guardian and wish to duck off for a coffee or snack while your child is enjoying their activity session, feel free, however you MUST return prior to the finish of their activity to accompany them between sessions .

CAN WE BRING OUR OWN PICNIC LUNCHES? Yes, and you are welcome to find a nice shady place at the Event Hub to enjoy it!

Page 13: ADVENTURER’S HANDBOOKkidsadventureoutdoors.org.au/anglesea/wp-content/... · it’s going to be a great weekend full of biking, canoeing, paddling, running, climbing, scrambling,

ACCOMMODATION IS ACCOMMODATION INCLUDED IN MY TICKET? No, not unless you have selected and paid for the Camp Out as an extra. Your general ticket covers activities only. You can then choose to purchase attendance at the overnight Camp Out during the booking process. OR you can book accommodation at the YMCA or Beachfront Caravan Park, though this is done directly with the accommodation venue concerned.

WHAT ARE MY ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS? There are three accommodation options:

WILL I HAVE TO SHARE A TENT WITH PEOPLE I DON’T KNOW? No. Tents will be booked according to family group (wherea family is a group of children known to one another and at least one adult guardian responsible for that group).

WHAT TIME DOES THE CAMP OUT START? Those attending the Camp Out will meet at 3.30pm (NOTE: this means you must select ‘Camp Out’ for Session Three, Saturday). Participants will take a walk of approximately 30 mins through bushland to the campsite and will then set camp with the guidance of instructors. Should a child not be able to walk for any reason, you can drive to the site and/or discuss options.

HOW DO I GET TO THE CAMP OUT? Campers will meet at Registration Tent at the Event Hub and then be led by guides on a bush walk to the campsite.
