THESE are the descendants of Noah. Noah was a righ-teous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God.10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.11 Now the earth was cor-rupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with vio-lence. 12 And God saw that the earth was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted its ways upon the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark

three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above; and put the door of the ark in its side; make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 For my part, I am going to bring a flood of waters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you; and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of every liv-ing thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.

20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground accord-ing to its kind, two of every kind shall come in to you, to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every kind of food that is eaten, and store it up; and it shall serve as food for you and for them.” 22 Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.

Genesis is the first book of the Bible and first book of the Old Testament. In the first eleven chapters, the book teaches us how the world began and the origin of the human race. In the story of Noah, God asked Noah to build an ark to save his family from the flood He would bring. Did you know that after Noah was 500 years old he had three sons? Yes, 500 years old! During this time, things started getting very interesting for Noah.Noah was a good man who loved and obeyed God. But Noah lived among people who did wicked things. This made God unhappy. People had become so bad that they stopped thinking of anything good. God was so hurt that He wanted to get rid of every person and all the creatures that He had made. He wanted all the evil to stop. God has feelings. He gets upset when we act bad. But we also know that God is love. This means that He can be upset with us, but still love us, and that is why He remembered Noah. God actually loved all the people as much as He loved Noah —but at the time, only Noah was listening to God. God told Noah to build an ark—a big boat. Noah listened to God and built a boat that was one-and-a-half football fields long. That’s a really big boat! No-ah’s neighbors laughed at him because there wasn’t any water in the desert where they lived. But God told Noah that a great flood was coming. Noah tried to warn the people to change their evil ways so that they could hear God too. But they wouldn’t listen. God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all the people because the earth is full of bad things because of them. I am going to destroy them and the earth.” Then God made a covenant with Noah that he and his family would be safe from the flood. God asked Noah to collect two of all the creatures of the earth and bring them into the ark. He also sent the animals to Noah. Pairs of each kind of animal were put safely inside the ark before it began to rain. Noah’s wife, his three sons, and their wives were also safe-ly on the boat. When Noah’s family was aboard, God shut the door. Noah and his family and the animals lived in the ark for seven days before the first rain came.

Think About It! Some people think it took more than one hundred years to build the ark! The Bible says that Noah was 600 years old when the flood waters came. Noah did not allow his age to get in the way of listening to God. No matter how young or old you are, you will always need God and His guidance for your life. God took care of Noah and his family, just as He had promised. When Noah and his family came out of the ark, no one had to tell Noah to worship God. Noah knew that God had done what He had promised in saving them from the flood, and Noah was grateful. In Genesis 9:12–16, God again demonstrated His love for Noah. God made another promise, signified by the rainbow to never destroy the earth again by water. The rainbow will always remind us of God’s promise to Noah and the fact that God always keeps His promises!
