ENDEAVOUR FALLSCOOKTOWNThe fi rst true European settlement on Australian soil. A granite boulder marks the place where Lieutenant James Cook beached HM Bark Endeavour, having accidentally struck the Great Barrier Reef off the coast north of Cape Tribulation on 17 June 1770.

KEATING’S LAGOONA 1.5km boardwalk and walking track skirt the edge of this important bird sanctuary 5km south of Cooktown. A bird hide provides a perfect spot for spying on magpie geese, black ducks, whistlers and brolgas, especially near the end of the dry season.

BLACK MOUNTAINThe giant 465 metre high pile of black granite boulders is an imposing sight as you approach Cooktown. Known as “Kalkajaka” (place of the spear), Black Mountain was an important Aboriginal meeting place and the source of many Dreaming stories.

LAKELANDSituated in the picturesque Laura River Valley, the Lakeland Downs area is home to the largest coffee plantation in Australia. Taste the local brew at the local coffee shop.

LAURAThis area has the largest collection of prehistoric rock art galleries in the world, including images of the legendary Quinkan spirit fi gures. Visit the Quinkan cultural and interpretive centre to organise a site tour.

LAKEFIELD NATIONAL PARKA birdwatchers and barramundi fi sherman’s paradise, the vast 573,000 hectares of Lakefi eld National Park is rich in estuaries, mangroves and mudfl ats that fl ow into Princess Charlotte Bay.

BATTLE CAMP ROADBattle Camp recalls a bloody battle in 1873

between Aboriginal groups and diggers en route from Cooktown to the Palmer River goldfi elds.

The road is a challenging 4WD adventure which winds through sandstone escarpments and onto

savannah grasslands.

OLD LAURA HOMESTEADThe pastoral industry on Cape York Peninsula can trace its origins back to the Laura Homestead. This historic homestead was built in 1879 and is now surrounded by Lakefi eld National Park.
