This manual was written to consolidate the many University and MCB Policies, Procedures and Guidelines that will hopefully be of assistance to MCB advisors as well as staff, students and administrators. Many of the policies provided here are taken from the 2016-2017 Catalog, Administrative and Department issued policies, and various documents created to define the business programs in the Monfort College of Business.

We hope you will find this information useful when advising business students.

Freshman and sophomore students are advised by an academic advisor in MCB’s Advising Center. All other business students are assigned faculty advisors according to their chosen emphasis area within the Monfort College of Business. The Advising Center provides secondary academic advising and serves as a resource to faculty advisors. If you need additional academic information about policies and procedures the MCB Advising Center can help identify sources of information.

What is Academic Advising?

Academic Advising is an educational process that, by intention and design, facilitates students’ understand-ing of the meaning and purpose of higher education and fosters their intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning (NACADA, 2004).

Required MaterialsStudents are required to familiarize themselves with the following required materials:

What are you expected to do?• Schedule regular appointments with an advisor during each semester• Come prepared to ask questions and bring a copy of your 4-Year Suggested Schedule, Degree Works, and Academic Transcript to each appointment• Be an active participant in the advising experience and complete tasks suggested by the advisor during your advising sessions• Keep a record of your progress toward meeting your goals• Become knowledgeable about college programs, policies and procedures• Provide honest and accurate information to the advisor regarding any concerns, questions, or special needs that might affect academic success• Adhere to the policies set forth in the MCB Student Code of Professional Conduct

What can you expect your advisor to do?• Be accessible for meeting with advisees via office hours, telephone, e-mail or web access • Encourage and guide students as they define and develop their academic and career goals• Review the student’s degree evaluation to assess academic progress • Communicate the curriculum, graduation require-ments, academic policies and procedures• Refer students to available University and College resources when needed•Maintain confidentiality, adhering to FERPA guide-lines and UNC policies

1. Go to URSA and login with your username and password. https://ursa.unco.edu/cp/home/displaylogin

2. Then, select the Student tab from the Welcome Page.

3. On the Student page, Below Registration Tools, select View Student Information

4. On the Registration Term page, select current term (i.e. Fall 2016)

5. Your Advisor’s name is listed under Primary Advisor (see below)

New Incoming FreshmenNew incoming freshmen with a Colorado Commission for Higher Education (CCHE) index of at least 100 may be admitted to any of the six emphases in the Monfort College of Business or Software Engineering when applying for admission to UNC.

Freshman with a GED score of at least 570 may be admitted to any of the six emphases in the Monfort College of Business or Software Engineering when applying for admission to UNC.

New Incoming freshmen who have a Colorado Commission for Higher Education (CCHE) index of 99 or lower must first declare XLA-Seeking Business. The student must then complete 15 credit hours at UNC and attain a GPA of at least a 3.0.

Current UNC Students From Other MajorsCurrent UNC students who have completed 15 or more credit hours and have at least a 3.0 GPA may be admitted to a business major or software engineering by submitting a Change of Major form with the Monfort College of Business.

To fill out a Change of Major form, visit one of the following offices based on your emphasis area or Software Engineering program: • Acct. and Comp. Inform. Transfer Students From Other InstitutionsTransfer students are admitted to the University based on official transcripts from all institutions. If the student meets the requirements of at least 15 credit hours with a 3.00 cumulative GPA, they may be admitted to any emphasis in the Monfort College of Business or Software Engineering.

Students who have at least 15 credit hours of transfer work are allowed to Apply for Admission to MCB or Software Engineering if their cumulative GPA is between 2.50 through 2.99.

ORTransfer students transferring less than 15 credit hours must meet the incoming freshmen admissions require-ments. They must have a CCHE index of at least 100. Students who have a CCHE index of 100 or lower must declare XLA Seeking Business and complete 15 hours of UNC coursework with a 3.00 or higher cumulative GPA from UNC.

Once you have completed the above requirements see the office in the emphasis area of your choice.

Provisional AdmissionStudents with a cumulative GPA between 2.5-2.99 may apply for Provisional Admission to MCB or Software Engineering. To apply for Provisional Admission, you will need to meet with the Administrative Assistant in the emphasis area of your choice.

All UNC students who have completed 30 or more semester hours will be required to have a declared major. Students who do not meet this policy will have a hold put on early registration for the following term.

Second Bachelor’s Degree in Business AdministrationStudents who have received a Bachelor’s Degree from any four-year institution and received a final cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 may declare a Second Bachelor’s Degree in the Monfort College of Business.

Note: Students who have received a first degree in Business Administration may not declare a Second Bachelors in any emphasis in the Monfort College of Business.

To declare a Second Bachelors in Business Administration, visit one of the following offices based on your emphasis area or Software Engineering degree:

Emailed and faxed applications will be accepted.

Students who have completed a Bachelor’s Degree and received a final cumulative GPA between 2.50 and 2.99 may submit an Application for Admission to MCB. Students should apply with the Administrative Assistant in the emphasis area of your choice to apply for Provisional Admission:

International Students Freshmen International students with a TOEFL score of at least 550 Paper Based Test or 215 Computer Based Test or 80 Internet Based Test (IBT)

International transfer students who have at least a 3.00 GPA on 15 transferable credit hours may be admitted to a business major emphasis when applying for admission to UNC.

While a student is in high school, they may be taking courses that are deemed equivalent to College level coursework if a student passes the final exams with scores set by the university.

If a student receives university credit for either AP or IB courses, a student will receive the number of credit hours for the equivalent course according to the university equivalency charts that follow. The charts can also be found at the following websites:

Note: A student who presents an ACT score of 30.0 or higher in English or an SAT Critial Reading score of 630 or higher is exempt from ENG 122. A student who presents an ACT score of 26.0 or higher in mathematics, or an SAT math score of 560 or higher, is exempt from the Area 2 requirement.

There are no credit hours assigned to an exemption unlike those hours assigned to AP and IB equivalencies.

Liberal Arts Core Category 2• A student with an ACT Math score of 26 or higher is exempt from LAC Area 2 Math and it meets the

requirement for MATH 124 College Algebra, for business students.• A student with an SAT Math score of 560 or higher is exempt from LAC Area 2 Math and it meets the

requirement for MATH 124 College Algebra, for business students.• A student who has received Advanced Placement (AP) credit for MATH 131, Calculus I does not have to

take MATH 124 College Algebra or MATH 176 Topics in Calculus.• A student who has received International Baccalaureate (IB) credit for LAC Area 2 Math meets the

requirement for MATH 124 College Algebra, for business students.

A student who has taken College Algebra from a community college or 4 year institution and received at least a “C” as a dual credit class in high school or as a regularly enrolled student meets the requirement for MATH 124, College Algebra for business students. The student is responsible for requesting the transcripts be transferred to UNC.

A student who has successfully completed MATH 176 Topics in Calculus or MATH 131 Calculus I, either in transfer credit or at UNC, is not required to complete MATH 124, College Algebra for the College of Business requirement.

In the 2014-15 and later Catalogs, all Business majors must complete STAT 150, Introduction to Statistical Analysis and this course will fulfill the university’s requirement for LAC Area 2.

BAFN 291, Business Statistics I may be substituted for STAT 150 Introduction to Statistical Analysis either in transfer or UNC course credit. Students in 2013-14 and prior catalogs may complete STAT 150, Introduction to Statistical Analysis as a course substitution for BAFN 291 Business Statistics I.

The University of Northern Colorado requires that students complete an assessment to determine readiness for mathematics and statistics courses. The web-based assessment element is called ALEKS and should be taken prior to coming to New Student Orientation. The ALEKS Math Placement Assessment covers material from Basic Math through Precalculus and will take approximately 90 minutes to complete. After the assessment, a targeted Prep and Learning Module is available for you to review and learn material, and to improve placement and eventual course outcomes.

All students are strongly encouraged to spend several hours using the ALEKS Prep and Learning Module. Even if you have achieved placement in your desired course, time spent in ALEKS will better prepare you for your upcoming course and ultimately lead to better grades.

Who Has To Take ItAll students who wish to take an entry-level mathematics or statistics course that requires the ALEKS Assessment, which includes: MATH 120; MATH 124; MATH 125; MATH 127; MATH 131, MATH 171, MATH 181; STAT 150

BenefitsYour results are reported to you immediately after the exam so you know what classes will be available to you during registration for your new student orientation session. The mathematics advisor with whom you meet at orientation will then be better able to assist you in determining the appropriate mathematics course to start your college career.

After the assessment, a targeted Prep and Learning Module is available for you to review and learn material, and to improve placement and eventual course outcomes. This module is available for six weeks after taking the assessment. You can re-take the assessment up to four times over the next year after your initial assessment.The following are the scores required for each course in a Business or Software Engineering student must have:• STAT 150 ALEKS score of 40-100%• MATH 124 ALEKS score of 45-59%• MATH 176 ALEKS score of 60-100%• MATH 131 ALEKS score of 75-100%

Admission and Transcript Evaluation ProcessTransfer students are admitted to the University based on official transcripts from all institutions. If the student meets the requirements of at least 15 credit hours with a 3.0 cumulative GPA, they may be admitted to any emphasis or Software Engineering in the Monfort College of Business. Students who have at least 15 credit hours of transfer work are allowed to apply for admission to MCB if their cumulative GPA is between 2.5 through 2.99.

The University Registrar’s Office inputs all transcripts with university approved courses and notifies the student of their admission status.

Transfer Limits for Business Coursework• No more than 12 semester credit hours of the Business Administration Core may be transferred toward a

Business Administration major. • A maximum of 9 semester credit hours in 300/400-level Required Emphasis Credits and Elective Emphasis

Credits can be transferred from other four-year institutions. Additionally, 6 credit hours of Business Elective semester credit hours may be transferred from other four-year institutions.

• UNC Business majors who plan to earn credit toward their degree from another institution must obtain prior written approval from their department chair and the MCB Advising Center, Kepner 1095, (970) 351-1233.

• Credit from other Colorado institutions as specified in the UNC Transfer Guides may be transferred at the time of admission to the College of Business. Transfer credit from other institutions will be evaluated for acceptance towards a UNC degree on an individual basis.

Statewide Business Articulation Agreement between Colorado Public Colleges:The Business Statewide Articulation ensures that a student who begins an Associate of Arts degree at a Colorado community college may transfer 60 credits into the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree program at a Colorado public four-year college i.e., 0 plus 60 agreement. The principles, policies, and guidelines in this transfer guide shall apply uniformly to all students attempting to transfer credits earned at a Colorado community college into the four-year colleges and universities. Residency Requirement for GraduationA student must have earned a minimum of 30 semester credit hours in UNC Courses. Twenty (20) of the last thirty (30) semester credit hours of a degree program must be earned in UNC courses.

Transfer Hour Conversion from Quarters to SemesterIf a student transfers a business course from an institution on the quarter hour system which is deemed equivalent to a UNC Business course and it converts to fewer than 3 semester hours, a waiver may be made for the fractional difference by the Chair of the Department who is reviewing the course for equivalency.

Note: The student must complete at least 120 semester credit hours in order to graduate.

Lower-Division Transfer CreditLower-division transfer credit may be granted for any 100-or 200-level business course requirement that is taken at either Community College or four-year institutions as long as the course is evaluated as an equivalent course by MCB departments.A website for the Colorado Community College Transfer Course guide for the current bulletin ishttp://www.unco.edu/regrec/Current%20Students/Transfer/Transfer_Guides.html

If the course being transferred is a Liberal Arts Core or University Elective course, the student’s transcript will be evaluated through the department for the course subject matter. A student who will be taking the course in a future semester will also receive pre-approval for the course from the UNC department of the course subject matter.

If the course being transferred is a business course the student’s transcript will be evaluated by the MCB Department Chair according to the business topic of the course. For example, a Finance course from a different institution will be evaluated by the MCB Finance Department. A student who will be taking the course in a future semester will receive pre-approval for that course.

If the course is a business requirement but not a business course, the student will need to take a course syllabus to the College and Department of that course subject matter. For example, MATH 176 (Topics in Calculus) would be evaluated by the Math Department.

Upper-Division Transfer CreditThe Monfort College of Business will accept equivalent upper-division (Junior and Senior level) business transfer credits from AACSB accredited institutions as long as the course is found to be an equivalent MCB course.

Upper-division business coursework taken at business colleges that are not AACSB accredited or have not entered into an articulation agreement with MCB are not transferable.

MCB will not accept upper-division business credits from community colleges.

Prior Approval to Take Additional Transfer Course WorkMCB students who have completed UNC course work must obtain prior written approval before taking any subsequent course work at other institutions. This will prevent students from taking course work only to find that the courses will not transfer to UNC. The prior approval process begins in the MCB Advising Center and department offices. They must be completed by the student and reviewed and approved by the Department Chair of the subject matter.

Time Limits on Business CoursesBusiness courses that were taken more than 10 years ago will not be transferred or counted toward the student’s business degree. Course credit earned 10 years before the baccalaureate degree is to be granted in any course other than business coursework may be applicable toward the UNC degree at the discretion of the academic department for the course subject matter.

MATH 124 is the required choice for Category 2 because it is the prerequisite for MATH 176, Topics in Calculus and BAFN 291, Business Statistics I.

Beginning with the 2014-15 catalog, STAT 150, Introduction to Statistical Analysis will be required of all business majors instead of BAFN 291. (BAFN 291 was removed from the business core making room for 6 hours of business electives instead of 3) Students in 2013-14 and older catalogs may substitute STAT 150 for BAFN 291.

If a student moves from an older catalog into the 2014-15 catalog, the student may substitute BAFN 291 for STAT 150 requirement.

Area 3, Arts and HumanitiesStudents must select two courses drawing from two different subgroups. Students have the option of taking BA 150, Foundations in Business to fulfill one of those two courses.

[MCB grAduAtion requireMents]The Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration requires all majors to complete a minimum of 120 semester hours of coursework.

The coursework consists of Liberal Arts Core and non-business courses to total 60 hours. Business Majors who take BA 150 (Area 3c), BA 251 (Area 7), BAFN 240 (LAC Elect) and/or BA 205 as a part of their Liberal Arts core, will count them as part of the 60 hour requirement for non-business electives. The remainder of the degree consists of 30 hours of the Business Core, 24 Business Emphasis Required and Electives, and 6 hours of Business Electives.

• In catalogs beginning with the 2009-2010 catalog forward to 2014-15, BA 205, Business Communications will count as a business elective.

[Monfort College of Business Minors]

There are five minors supported from the Monfort College of Business. They are Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Entrepreneurship, Global Business, and Network and Information Systems Security.

Business Administration MinorDesigned for students who have a major in another school or college outside the College of Business but wish to pursue a collateral area in Business Administration. Completion of the minor provides broad exposure to the functional areas in Business Administration. These include accounting, computer information systems, finance, management, and marketing. Students interested in the entrepreneurship may take an additional 6 hours for a business minor with Entrepreneurship option. The minor is not open to students who major in Business Administration.

Computer Information Systems (CIS) Minor Designed for students who wish to pursue collateral work in the computing, technology and communications/networking areas. Completion of the minor prepares a student to successfully employ technology and integrate information systems into his or her career activities. The program is not designed to prepare individuals to become programmers or systems personnel, but does provide a broad exposure to the area of corporate information systems.

Entrepreneurship Designed for students with a Business Administration major. A key feature of the minor is the applied aspect and the customization of course work to fit the student’s particular interests and career plans. Through the course work in this minor, a student can test an idea and its viability as a new venture start -up.

Global BusinessDesigned for students who have a major in Business Administration and wish to pursue an additional area of study in global business. Completion of the minor provides broad exposure to the global areas of business administration. These include at a minimum finance, economics, management, and marketing. The minor is only open to students who major in Business Administration.

Network and Information Systems SecurityDesigned for students who are interested in developing a skill set and knowledge base of security issues for computer networks and accounting information systems. The minor provides a background of network infrastructure, protocols, and software. Minors will gain knowledge about industry operating systems, security strategies and relevant products and equipment. Students with this minor will be introduced to accounting concepts and accounting fraud detection. NISS minor is attractive to students majoring in business and other areas across campus, especially Criminal Justice majors. [Prerequisite PoliCy]The College has a longstanding history of meticulously following prerequisite policy requirements and has, over the years, done everything within its power to assure that students are well-informed of the policies and that they are only allowed to remain in courses for which they have previously completed the prerequisites. These prerequisite standards have been developed and approved by discipline faculty and the shared governance system with MCB. The policies are designed to enhance the learning experience for individual students enrolled in classes, as well as for the overall class learning environment.

The Monfort College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the accreditation standard requires that prerequisites for business coursework be enforced. The College faculty periodically reviews the existing prerequisites and updates them in order to ensure a high-quality learning experience within the business curriculum. It is very important to note that the most current catalog must be used each semester to identify the prerequisites.

Prerequisite enforcement procedures and requirements are communicated to the students through the following vehicles:• UNC Catalog: The course descriptions for each class lists the prerequisites and is expressly stated in the

catalog. “The student is held responsible for having met the current UNC Catalog prerequisites in all business courses for which he or she has registered. Students who register for business classes for which they do not have the prerequisites listed in the current UNC Catalog may be dropped from the class at any time by the instructor, Department Chair or Dean.

Students will be dropped from all upper division (300 or 400 level) business courses if they have not reached junior standing (at least 60 semester credits) before the first class meeting.”

• Course Outlines: These documents are distributed to each enrolled student on day one of a given course; each business instructor covers the information in class, including prerequisite requirement and procedures.

• UNC New Student Orientation Session: In each of these sessions, the MCB representatives explain the College’s prerequisite policies to incoming freshmen and transfer students.

• Individual Advisors: Students meet with their academic advisor each semester. The advisor can guide the student to appropriate coursework considering the course prerequisite policy.

[Prerequisite PoliCy]A prerequisite audit is performed each semester by the Registrar’s office to identify students who have not met the prerequisites for the courses they have registered for including business courses. Students are notified by the Registrar’s office when they are in violation and they are dropped from the courses when they are out of compliance. Students who have been given an exception to register for courses by a faculty/staff override are not dropped from their courses.

Student classification is based on hours completed. • Freshman 0-29 semester hours of credit.• Sophomore 30-59 semester hours of credit.• Junior 60-89 semester hours of credit.• Senior 90 hours through successful completion of baccalaureate degree.

The Monfort College of Business requires a student to have junior standing before enrolling in 300- and 400-level business classes. Junior standing is sixty (60) or more semester credits. A student with less than sixty (60) credits must be granted an exception to register for an upper-division business course. Exceptions will be granted only under the following conditions:

• The student has completed 54 semester hours and denying the student registration into a particular class would delay the student’s expected graduation date. This can occur because of course-sequencing (prerequisites) or alternate semester/year class scheduling practices. An exception would be permitted only for the sequence or alternate semester/year class, not other upper-division classes. No exceptions are made for students with less than 54 semester credits.

• The student has completed at least 54 semester credits hours and has completed (or is enrolled in) all the Liberal Arts Core requirements, the lower-division business courses, and other lower-division courses required for the degree.

Students should be aware that if the number of credit hours falls below full-time student status (12 cred-it hours) it can adversely affect their financial aid and eligibility for athletic programs as well as their credit hours allowed in the College Opportunity Fund.

Grade Point AverageThe University operates on a 4.00 grade point system. Under “Grading” in this section of the catalog, the “Standard Grading” table contains the grade point value of individual grades.

Final GradesFaculty must submit grades via the Web to the Registrar’s Office by 5 p.m. of the third working day after the end of a course. Grade changes or corrections must be submitted within the first two weeks of the following semester. Spring term grade changes are also due the first two weeks of summer term.

Grade ChangesGrade changes or corrections must be submitted within the first six weeks of the following term and must be approved and signed by the instructor and the Director/Department Chair. Spring term grade changes are also due the first six weeks of Summer term.

Grade change requests submitted after the six week period must be approved and signed by the instructor, the School Director/Department Chair and the Dean of the College (or designee).

Forms must be submitted by faculty/staff. Grade change request forms delivered by students will not be accepted.

Incomplete GradesAt the discretion of the instructor, a temporary grade of Incomplete “I” may be given if you demonstrate that you could not complete the requirements of the course due to circumstances beyond your control that were not reasonably foreseeable.

You must be passing the course at the time that an Incomplete is requested unless the instructor determines that there are extenuating circumstances to assign an Incomplete even if you are not passing the course. The incomplete may be assigned up through the last week of the term, which includes finals week.With a grade of “I”, credits are not used to compute grade point average (GPA) and are not counted towards graduation.

Incomplete GradesWhen completing an Incomplete grade, do NOT register for the course a second time.• The instructor must submit to the department

chair or school director, a written notice of the specific coursework to be completed before the final grade is determined as well as reasons for the Incomplete grade; a copy is kept in the school/department and one is provided to you.

• To change an Incomplete grade, the instructor must submit the grade change request form to the Office of the Registrar. Grade change requests, submitted after the six week period of the subsequent term you were originally enrolled in the course, must be approved and signed by the instructor, the school director/department chair and the Dean of the College (or designee). • If the course requirements are not completed and the grade change form not received in the Office of the Registrar after a maximum of one year, the grade will be recorded on the academic record as a failing or unsatisfactory grade. Once the incomplete grade(s) have rolled to failing/unsatisfactory, a grade change(s) will not be permitted.

Degrees will not be conferred upon students with outstanding “I” grades.

Effective Fall 2013, the Grade Replacement Policy has changed.Courses repeated under this policy may not be eligible for financial aid. For more information, contact Financial Aid at (970) 351-2502.

Highlights of Changes• A Grade Replacement Application is required for each course being repeated.

• The application is required to be submitted once you have registered for the course but no later than the drop deadline of the course being repeated.

Grade Replacement Policy• The Grade Replacement Policy applies to UNC courses that are letter-graded (A-F) where both the current

• Grade replacement can only be applied once per course for a maximum of six (6) courses; these limits only

apply to courses repeated Fall 2013 or later.

• Grade replacement can be used regardless of previous grade earned.

[ContinuAtion requireMents]

Students should be aware of both the University and MCB continuation requirements. The University’s Academic Support and Advising Center monitors the students’ overall cumulative grade point average, and the MCB Advising Center monitors the students’ business grade point average.

UNC Continuation RequirementsThe University requires students to maintain a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. Students who do not meet this requirement may be suspended from the University and will not be permitted to enroll in any University class during the suspension period. Students who have been put on probation or have been suspended from the University, but who are able to raise their cumulative GPA to at least a 2.0, may be reinstated to good standing with the University, however, these students may continue to be on MCB probation or suspension for business GPA requirement policies.

MCB Continuation Requirements.Students must maintain a 2.0 (“C”) cumulative grade point average in the business course work taken in MCB. (The courses not included in the business GPA calculation are BACS 180, BAFN 240 (if taken prior to Spring 2015) BAMK 260, BAAC 301, BAFN 302 and BAMG 356. These courses also do not count in the 120 hours required for graduation for business majors.) Students achieving less than the required cumulative grade point average 2.0 will be put on academic probation in the Monfort College of Business. (See next page for MCB Probation/Suspension policy)

Business GPA MonitoringThe cumulative business grade point average is monitored once the MCB major has attempted a minimum of 9 hours of business course work. The business GPA is then monitored every term that the student is enrolled and is officially a business major. Repeated business course work in which a student has previously earned a grade of “D” or less will continue to count in the business GPA calculations unless the student applies for Grade Forgiveness or uses Grade Replacement. If a student applies for and receives or uses Grade Replacement at the university level for a business course, the new grade will replace the old grade in the cumulative GPA calculation at the University level and in the calculation of the Business GPA.

A student on probation must bring their business GPA to 2.00 within 9 semester hours of business coursework or one year, whichever comes first. (If a student completes only 6 hours of business coursework in the current semester he/she would be able to register for additional business courses the following semester).

In order for MCB students to maintain good standing as a business major, they must meet two GPA requirements. They are: 1. Maintain a 2.0 UNC Cumulative GPA * Students who do not meet this standard, will be placed on academic probation with the University. 2. Maintain a 2.0 Cumulative Business GPA * Students’ business GPA will be monitored after they have completed 9 hours of business coursework (“BA” prefix). (BACS 180, BAFN 240 (if taken before Spring of 2015) BAMK 260, BAFN 240, BAAC 301, BAFN 302, BAMG 356 do not count in business GPA) *Students who do not meet the standard for Business GPA will be placed on academic probation within the Monfort College of Business. * GPA Calculation Spreadsheet can be found at: http://mcb.unco.edu/Advising/

The business GPA is identified by Insight report as soon as possible after final grades are posted in each semester. A student with less than a 2.0 business GPA will be sent a letter and packet advising them of their probationary status and instructions on how to proceed (sample packet is attached).

Students are allowed to remain in their business courses in the current semester in order to bring their Business GPA back to 2.0.

Students on probation must meet the following requirements:1. Meet with Rosa Law, Director of MCB Advising Center, before the add deadline of the semester in which they placed on probation.

2. Meet with their academic advisor during the current semester to review academic progress and to help ensure the best path to return to good standing as a business major a.The name of their academic advisor is identified in the letter of probation and the students are directed to the Faculty/Staff Directory website http://mcb.unco.edu/Directory/Faculty/ in order to get their current contact information b.Students must obtain his/her *signature at that time

3. Attend an individual meeting with a Career Services Counselor to help students to develop an action plan to regain good-standing in the Monfort College of Business as well as look at other options and degrees that will best utilize their skills and interests. a.They must obtain a signature from a Career Services Counselor

* Students will return the signature sheet to the Monfort College of Business Advising Center and it will be placed in their permanent files.

4. Bring their business GPA to 2.0 within 9 semester hours of business coursework or one year, whichever comes first.

If a student completes all four of the above requirements, they will continue as a student in good standing at the Monfort College of Business.

SuspensionIf a student fails to meet any one of the requirements, or falls below a 2.0 for the second time they will be suspended from the Monfort College of Business and are removed from their business major.

The suspended students will be allowed to continue in the business courses that are open to non-business students after early registration but they will be removed from business courses that are for business majors only. (see table)

Suspended Business students should meet with an advisor in the Academic Support and Advising Center in Michener and Career Services for help developing a new academic strategy and select a new academic major.

Appealing SuspensionA student may appeal their suspension by submitting a written appeal to the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) before the deadline stated in their letter of suspension. The SAC will review the appeal and make recommendations to the Assistant Dean who will make a final determination and notify the student of the outcome of the appeal.

Emphasis CoursesCourse substitutions and/or waivers are not recommended. However, in extraordinary circumstances, the De-partment Chair may substitute courses within the emphasis. Emphasis course waivers or substitutions must be in writing and noted in the student’s department advising file. The Course Adjustment form must be submitted from individual departments to the Registrar’s office and the form can be found on the following website:

Business CoreWaiver or substitution of the business core courses is not permitted.

Professional Experience RequirementStudents are required to complete a minimum of 50 hours of business work experience within your specific area of study prior to graduation. Each department has specific requirements for each area of emphasis. Two pre-requisite workshops must be completed PRIOR to completing your Professional Experience requirement (usually your sophomore year).

Paid experiences are preferred. Your Professional Experience must require skills and knowledge obtained from MCB courses. It can be obtained through employment, volunteer activities or project-based opportunities. Activities should be similar to an entry-level position for a MCB graduate and tied to your career goal and/or major.

The Professional Experience must be completed during the student’s junior or senior year.

Who is required to complete a Professional Experience?All MCB students will be required to complete a Professional Experience prior to graduation. However, as the program is new and being implemented, any student with 60 or more credits at the beginning of Fall Semester 2012 is not required to complete a Professional Experience. Any student with 59 and fewer credits at that time is required to complete a Professional Experience.

The Professional Experience Requirement is broken down into various phases that should be completed at certain points in your college career. Step 1. All final examination periods are 150 minutes in length. Examinations are conducted in the same classroom used throughout the semester unless alternative arrangements are made with the room scheduling department in the Events/Scheduling Office at the University Center.

Faculty should alert students to changes in final examination times or locations before the testing date. With the approval of the Department Chair, the final examination may be eliminated by an instructor who considers it unnecessary. If no final examination is given, class will continue through the last week of the semester. In such cases, classes will meet at the times shown on the final examination schedule.

Each student registered for credit in a course must attend the final examination unless the student has made prior arrangements to be excused by the instructor. In extreme instances, a final examination may be rescheduled by the instructor, provided the change is coordinated with the appropriate dean’s office and ap-proved by the Department Chair.

If a student has three or more final examinations for one day, the student may negotiate a time change with the instructors involved. This negotiation should take place not less than one week before the scheduled examinations. If the parties involved cannot find a mutually agreeable time, the Office of Academic Affairs will indicate courses for which a change must be made. Laboratory sessions will not meet during the final examination period. Laboratory examinations should be given before final examination week.

Academic StandingYour academic standing is determined by the cumulative grade point average. In order to graduate, you must earn a minimum of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale at the University of Northern Colorado.• You are placed on academic probation, up to the next 24 credit hours, at UNC if your cumulative grade

• If you are on academic probation and do not raise your cumulative GPA to 2.0 or higher at the conclusion of the 24 probation credit hours at UNC, you will be suspended.

• While on probation, if your cumulative GPA falls below a 1.0, you will be automatically suspended.• Please note that Academic Standing Policy is different from the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Prog-

ress Policy. Even though your academic status allows you to continue enrollment at UNC, this does not guarantee continuation of Financial Aid assistance. Please refer to the Office of Financial Aid website at http://www.unco.edu/ofa/aid/maintaining/index.asp

Academic Suspension AppealYou may immediately appeal your suspension if extenuating circumstances exist. Extenuating circumstances include factors beyond your control (e.g. family emergency, serious illness, death) and must be documented.

Appeals due to other circumstances will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Instructions for immediate appeal are available at http://www.unco.edu/asa/academic_advising/scholastic_standards.html

• If the appeal is approved, you are given one additional semester to raise your cumulative GPA to a 2.0. If the appeal is denied, you will remain on academic suspension.

• After the appeals process is complete, if your appeal was denied, you will be removed from your Fall or Spring courses. If you are enrolled in Summer courses that have already begun prior to the completion of the appeal process, you will remain in those courses, but courses that have not started will be dropped.

• Summer semester does count as one additional semester to raise your cumulative GPA if your appeal is approved. If the appeal is denied, you will remain suspended regardless of your cumulative GPA at the completion of their Summer coursework.

• All appeals are reviewed by the University Academic Review Committee. The University Academic Review Committee’s decisions are final.

• A second academic suspension is considered a permanent suspension from future enrollment as an Undergraduate student at UNC.
