Welcome Ceremony
On July 9th 2013, AEARU summer camp began formally by the welcome
ceremony in the Weiming
Lake Meeting Room. 14
delegates from Japan,
Korea and China, together
with Teacher LU from
PKUSSI, two student
assistants and the working
team from PKUSUN
(Study-abroad United
Network) attended this
ceremony.
During the ceremony, Teacher LU and student organizers introduced the
program, safety and learning tips, the activity schedule and the company visit
arrangement. In addition, organizers from PKUSUN showed and gave out the
business card and T-shirt they designed at which the delegates all marveled
at.
After the tea break, the most interesting part begins: the game and talent show.
All the students played a game called Bingo while after just a moment came
out with 5 winners who got the gifts (See the photo above). Then, several
students went on the stage to sing a song, give a dance and even show
taekwondo. Finally, the welcome ceremony ended in an enthusiastic
atmosphere.
Karaoke
On July 23rd 2013, AEARU students and the class TA went to Karaoke in the
afternoon. Karaoke is a popular entertainment way among Chinese teenagers
nowadays. During the Karaoke, Chinese students showed the most interest
while delegates from Japan and Korea also sang songs in their mother tongue.
With the fervent songs, delicious snacks and the sweet love between two
delegates, all the students had a great time at that day.

Buffet
On the evening of July 19th 2013,
AEARU students, together with all the
other students studying in PKU
summer schools, had a large-scale
buffet in Boya International Hotel.
There are over 100 students attending
the buffet as estimated.
Besides the delicious food from all over
the world, one of the most attracting
part is the talent show and game.
During the performance, Shuyi YUAN
from Fudan University gave a belly
dance with amorous feeling while SHIN
from Japan sang a song called “I am
not good in Chinese” (See the 1st and
2nd photo on the right). In the game part,
the host invited some students on stage
to guess which scenic spot the picture
fragment indicates on the screen. When
it came to the game in which people
compete stepping on the balloons, the
atmosphere became impassioned that
night.

International delegates showed great interest in these instruments so they
strived to be the first to chat with bandsmen and even tried to play the

member from Yueju Club introduced
the association and Yueju itself. Then,
as the main part of the introduction,
they performed the opera fragment “See you off” (十八相送), originating from
the famous tragedy “The Butterfly Lovers”.
Most noteworthy is that staff from
Yueju Club not only introduced the
basic information of Yueju, but also
attached much importance on
practice. As the last part of the
communication, they taught AEARU
students how to sing this melody word
by word, which brought about the
climax of the whole night. Students learned with large interest and felt
actualized to done it successfully (See the photo above).

staff as a bonus because the price here is
much lower than in the market.
After the visit to the store, students went to
the working place of the company nearby.
“Which impressed me most is the
emphasize they put on their staff. There are
so many relax area in this company”, said
Can WANG, a delegate from Tsinghua

this visit!” said a delegate later that day.

Sightseeing Tours
Tour to Summer Palace
On July 15th 2013, AEARU students had a
tour to Summer Palace. Although the
weather that day was very bad with heavy
rain, students still had the passion to visit
this famous palace. Yinglun CUI, a member
from SUN, held the post of commentator
that day. Under his guide and introduction,
students hanged around in Summer Palace, visited many famous scenic spots

we had dinner in the big shopping mall near
the park, we went to see the gym Bird Net

They climbed the mountain, looked down at the beautiful view from the peak
and saw the famous crooked tree where Emperor Chongzhen committed

happiness on their faces which showed
the success of this tour.

One-day Trip to Tianjin
As the biggest activity organized by SUN during AEARU summer camp, 17
students and staff went to Tianjin for a one-day trip on July 28th 2013.
Tianjin is a city with many famous scenic spots near Beijing. In order to catch
the train to Tianjin, participants set off very early in the morning at 7 o’clock. On
arriving at the Haihe Square outside the Tianjin station, they headed for the
first destination “Five Roads” in that day although it took some time to find the
underground bus station. Five Roads is a historic area with many former
houses for famous people in 19th century. Via the visit to these places,
students learned a lot about the history in late Qing Dynasty.
After having lunch at the famous Guiyuan Restaurant where there are many
tasted traditional dishes,
students headed for the Old
Culture Street. They visited many shops there and bought some distinctive
souvenirs such as fans, wind-bells, clay figurines, etc. After that, they went to
South Food Street to taste typical Tianjin snacks. Some of them loved it very
much so they also bought some for their friends.
The last stop of this trip is the
Italian-Style Street. This street
consists of many European-style
architectures, bars, souvenirs stores
16
and statues which were designed based on Greek mythology and European
artistic work. Students roamed around the street in small groups while some of
them sat in one bar and had a cup of drink.
As times went by, it came to the end of this trip, they all felt reluctant to leave
Tianjin. However, the train was waiting for them, so after the latest glance at
this beautiful city, they set foot on the way back to Beijing.

will last forever.

My AEARU Memories
Ninh Pham
“It's the end now
We must say goodbye
In to places under the same sky
But the distance won't mean anything at all
Don't forget me…”
The song keep playing in my head for the past few days. For me, past few
weeks were unarguably memorable. I imagined myself from the first day until
now. PKUSSI definitely marked one of the most important events in my life.
This is actually my first time in China. I didn’t expect it to be this good. As I was
an exchange student in other country prior to this summer school, I expected
something to be boring with lectures and I will have to travel alone by myself.
However, it turned out that I was wrong! The AEARU summer program was
well-structured with a lot of activities, like everyday. We have a small group of
participants: 14. But, we spent time together and get closer to each other day
by day. I love it. The program was just perfect.
One of the memorable events was Beijing Opera at Laoshe Tea House. Within
an hour and a half, we had a chance to watch different traditional Chinese
performances. Although I didn’t understand most of it, it was really good. Each
performance lasted about 20 minutes and within the program, we experienced
around 10 traditional performances. Also, the architectural style of the Laoshe
Tea house was very traditional. It was so good that I couldn’t give any better
compliments.
Another memorable event was the Acrobatic Show. Once again, perfect! The
performances were perfect with a lot of different shows. I took a lot of videos
and pictures during the show. I really loved it. Not only me, but also all of my
friends.
I have to say, the structure of the program is so good! Everything was so
professional and excellent. However, there were some few negative points.
For example, at my first day to Beijing, I was desperately needed help.
Unfortunately, there was no one that I could contact. I suggest that, in the
future, PKU can have one Chinese student-one foreigner mentoring program.
It would be much easier to have a local student. Another negative point was
the schedule! The schedule kept changing about the meeting place or the
meeting time. Sometimes, I went to the meeting place but no one was there.
So, I had to go back and checked the email again. It made me impossible to
plan other things. I hope PKUSSI can fix this in the future with more consistent
20
schedule.
Above all, I love the program. The structure, the activities, and the size of the
class were just perfect. I knew a lot of new people. More importantly, I
understood more about China, about Chinese culture. Hopefully, I can come
back to PKU sometimes. I love it.
