Message from the Chair Greetings to the members and associates of the San Joaquin Valley AEG Chap-ter! We have several interesting announcements to share: Our next meeting will be on June 18th at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Our speaker will be Mr. Tim McCrink of the California Geological Survey (CGS). Tim is a Senior Engineering Geologist with the CGS where he heads up the Earthquake-induced Landslide Mapping Unit in the Seismic Hazards Mapping Program. Tim’s presentation will be “GIS-Based Digital Photogrammetry for Geologic and Hazard Mapping.” This highly interesting presentation incor-porates 3-dimensional imagery for geologic hazards analysis and Tim will be bringing an armload of 3-D glasses for our viewing pleasure! At our last meeting, we had a fascinating presentation from Mr. Chris Kemp from the Fresno State Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Chris presented an in-depth talk on his Masters’ thesis research: “The Sierra Nevada Frontal Fault system: Kinematics and associated landscape evolution.” Chris also presented his thesis research at the AEG Student Night in Sacramento on April 28th where it was also very well received.
In other news related to the SJV Student Chapter, we’d like to congratulate Ms. Anna Brody, a Fresno State Ge-ology graduate student (Masters degree program), for winning the 2009 Sacramento Graduate Scholarship and the GSA Shlemon Award for her outstanding graduate work. Kudos! At our last meeting, we held formal elections for our Chapter and the existing Ad Hoc officers were voted into place. Thanks to our officers for their time and efforts. The 2009 AEG 52nd Annual Meeting in South Lake Tahoe will be held on September 21 through 26.
Finally, we are pleased to announce that our AEG Chapter will be co-hosting a symposium on land subsidence with the San Joaquin Valley Branch of the Groundwater Resources Association (GRA). The symposium will be held on November 4 at the Fresno Radisson and is entitled: “Groundwater Withdrawal-Induced Land Subsidence in the San Joaquin Valley: A 2009 Perspective.” The prospect of renewed episodes of deep land subsidence in the San Joaquin Valley is very real: Valley groundwater levels are presently at historic lows; Valley groundwater pumping has been increasing due to the third year of drought and cutbacks in surface water deliveries; and Valley population growth has imposed an increasing demand on water supplies. Tim McCrink is a Senior Engineering Geologist with the California Geological Survey, where he supervises the earthquake-induced landslide mapping unit in the Seismic Hazards Mapping Program. Prior to joining CGS in 1988, Tim worked in mineral and petroleum exploration and as an engineering geologist for a geotechnical consulting firm. He earned a B.A. in Geology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, and a M.S. in Geology from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Tim is a Certified Engineering Geologist in California.

GIS-Based Digital Photogrammetry for Geologic and Hazard Mapping

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2005 National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) collected 1-meter imagery for California to prepare statewide, color orthophotography similar to the digital orthophoto quarter quads (DOQQ) prepared by the USGS in the 1990’s. The contractors who collected the imagery used a Leica Geosystems ADS40 airborne digital sensor that simultaneously records five bands of imagery in various com-binations at different look angles. Digital stereo imagery is an intermediate product of preparing ortho-rectified images from the ADS40 sensor.
Beginning in 2005, the California Geological Survey (CGS) undertook an evaluation of the NAIP ADS40 stereo imagery for application to landslide inventory and other geologic mapping applications, considering image reso-lution for identifying various geomorphic and cultural features, special imagery characteristics, and horizontal and vertical accuracies. In 2008 CGS completed the purchase of the statewide stereo imagery, likely the first such purchase in the nation. This purchase was contingent on development of specialized commercial photo-grammetric and GIS software applications, and development of massive data storage and large image transfer capabilities at CGS.

DIGITAL TERRAIN DATAThis presentation will discuss the main characteristics of the imagery and the technological hurdles addressed prior to CGS’ data purchase. Also presented will be the significant findings of the imag-ery evaluation, the advantages of using a photogrammetric GIS for geomorphic feature collection, and some of the chal-lenges still remaining to fully integrate this imagery into CGS programs.
