AEP State Conference 2018Culture and the Environment: A Case Study of Washington Irrigated Colony Rural Historic Landscape
Vonn Marie MayCultural Landscape Specialist
• Vonn Marie is a landscape historian and cultural landscape specialist with over 25 years of project experience.
• Her advocacy and rigor reflects her historic preservation and legal research background.
• Embracing the use of historic values in planning and design she has authored several project narratives and documented historical landscapes and settings.
Philosophy: All land has a history. A ‘deep read’ of the cultural landscape will reveal its origins and intents. Those precedents, or findings, can inform and cue the future. A cultural landscape investigation conducted during land use planning will provide a richer understanding of the past, an account of the present, and a more culturally grounded future.
• She has been recognized by the American Society of Landscape Architects, American Planning Association, American Institute of Architects, California Preservation Foundation and the California State Governor’s Award Program for her project work in historic preservation and cultural landscapes.
Rebecca McManusHistoric Preservation Specialist, IS ArchitectureSecretary of the Interior qualified Architectural Historian and Historic Preservation Specialist for IS Architecture.
She received her Masters of Historic Preservation degree from the University of Georgia, where she specialized in rehabilitation/restoration preservation and cultural landscapes. Her experience includes projects ranging from National Register of Historic Places nominations for a large-scale cultural landscape to numerous Historic Structure Reports and determinations of eligibility. For IS Architecture, she has authored and co-authored: • City of San Diego Register of Historic Resources designations• Historic Resource Technical Reports• CEQA Alternatives Analyses• HABS Documentation
Katie DeBiasePlanning Assistant, Office of Historic Resources, City of Los AngelesSecretary of the Interior qualified Architectural Historian and Historic Preservation Specialist. She holds a Masters of Historic Preservation from the University of Kentucky, Lexington. Her project experience emphasizes large scale surveys for built environment resources and documentation for transportation projects such as Caltrain and California High Speed Rail. She has prepared professional preservation reports and assessments for various projects including: • Historic Resource Technical Reports• CEQA Alternatives Analyses• Condition Assessment Reports• HABS Documentation• over 150 DPR 523 formsShe has been invited by the California Preservation Foundation (CPF) to speak on topics including Methodology for Large-Scale Rural Landscapes and Built Environment Surveys.
A Cultural Landscape is essentially a natural landscape that has been altered and shaped by human activity.
What is a Cultural Landscape?
The National Park Service (NPS) identifies four types of cultural landscapes: • Designed Landscape• Vernacular Landscape• Historic Sites• Ethnographic Landscape
Components of a Cultural Landscape• Natural Systems and Features• Land Use• Spatial Organization• Circulation• Vegetation• Water Features• Views and Vistas • Topography• Buildings and Structures• Cluster Arrangements• Cultural Traditions• Small Scale Features• Archaeological Sites

Success! We have spent nearly 2 years working on this project. Our work on the documentation of the cultural landscape was recently accepted by the Rail Authority and has SHPO concurrence. Construction of the high-speed rail has commenced.
