Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (popularly known as IITK) is one of the premier
institutions established by the Government of India in 1959. It is ranked as the best
engineering institute of India in recent years, continuing the excellence in research and
teaching programs for 50 years. The aim of the Institute is to provide meaningful education,
to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in
technological innovation for industrial growth and research development. The Institute not
only celebrates freedom of thought, cultivates vision and encourages growth, but also
inculcates human values and concern for the environment and the society.
The Kanpur Indo-American Programme from 1962 to 1972 was instrumental in setting up
the Institute's academic programmes and developing laboratories for instruction as well as
research. Under this program, the Institute received technical assistance from a consortium
of nine leading universities and institutions of U.S.A. It is now an autonomous engineering
and technology-oriented institute of higher education in India.
The Institute offers various academic programmes in engineering, sciences and humanities.
IIT Kanpur strives to create an intellectual reservoir for the contemporary and future needs
of the society by recruiting highly qualified faculty and admitting brilliant students by the
most stringent selection processes. The Institute has about 3000 undergraduate and 2000
postgraduate students, 350 faculties, and more than 1500 supporting staffs.
IIT Kanpur has a sprawling campus spread over an area of approximately 4.3 square km with
all the amenities for developing the personal, social and academic skills of the community.
The institute provides world class facilities to its students.
The P. K. Kelkar Library of IITK is a technical library with a collection of more than 5,00,000
volumes and subscription to more than 1400 print and online periodicals. It is one of the
best libraries in the nation. Microform and CD-ROM databases, technical reports, Standards
and theses are important part of this collection.
The Computer Centre caters to the computing needs of the faculty, staff and students for
their research and teaching. This fully air conditioned centre has a number of state-of-the-
art servers, high end Linux and Windows labs and application software. It supports an
institute wide 40 Gbps fibre optic network that connects all the academic departments,
hostels, library and other central facilities to this hub.

Established in 1964, Aerospace Engineering Department is a premier teaching and research
centre today. The department is engaged in engineering science instruction, flight
laboratory work, aerodynamic testing, indigenous design and fabrication of advanced
facilities and instruments. The department specializes in aerodynamics, flight mechanics,
propulsion, and aerospace structures.
The Department has a unique flight laboratory with four powered aircrafts, four gliders and
a 1000 m runway. The Department provides facility of using the Flight Laboratory to all
other institutes and organizations in the country.
The National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF), established in 1999, was set up at IIT Kanpur to
meet the national needs in areas of aeronautical and non-aeronautical R&D activities. It
houses the most versatile and efficient wind tunnel in India. NWTF has unique and
nationally recognized capabilities to evaluate aerodynamic performance of flight and road
vehicles as well as wind effects on civil structures.
The Department has highly qualified faculty, having an expertise in their respective fields
and involved in projects of National and International Importance. The department has
completed and is currently involved in a large number of sponsored and consultancy
projects for the agencies like AR&DB, ARMREB, ADA, ADE, ADRDE, ASTE, AICTE, DST, DRDL,
GTRE, VSSC, ISRO, CSIR, HAL, MHRD, ARDE, HEMRL, CEMILAC, Indian Railways.

Every year 35-40 students, admitted through JEE, graduate in Aerospace Engineering
getting. Also every year nearly 30 postgraduate students, admitted through GATE, complete
their post-graduation here.
Students strive here for overall personality development by learning engineering skills
through tough academics, by developing interpersonal, Leadership, Communication and
Management skills through managing and participating in several Club activities, national
level festivals, Hostel administration etc.
The academic curriculum and the extracurricular activities at the institute instil a confidence
to face any challenge posed to them and tackle any problem be it related to engineering or
the society. The curriculum at the Department is featured by the following:

INTERNSHIP:
3rd year Students of Department undergo a nearly 10-12 weeks long internship programme
at companies and universities across the globe which helps them get a grasp of the real
world applications of the theory learned.
It is given so much of importance that department has a proper internship collaboration
with Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas (USA). So far many students have
undergone their internship programmes in DRDO, NAL, ISRO, Boeing and many other well-
known companies and universities.
SUMMER PROJECT
In the summer vacations of 2nd year, the students get involved in several projects under the
professors of the Institute. Apart from these, the Summer Undergraduate Research Grant
for Excellence (SURGE) program at the Institute promotes innovative ideas and projects of
the students by funding them and providing other facilities essential for the projects.
Also, there are students who do projects under the different Science and Technology clubs
like Aero-modelling Club, Electronics Club, Robotics Club, Programming Club, etc.
SEMESTER PROJECTS
Some students of department work under a professor during semester to explore their field
of interests. These projects are different from the course projects and not included in the
academic curriculum.
COURSE PROJECTS
In a number of courses of department there are projects like RC aero-model making,
fabricating and testing composite, designing experiments for various needs, etc.

Students of department participate in various extracurricular activities like sports, cultural
events, science and technology events, national level event organization, administrative to
develop a good overall personality. Some of the students’ festivals incorporating several
sports and cultural events are as follows:
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL (SnT COUNCIL)
The Institute has a Science and Technology (SnT) Council under the Students’ Gymkhana
which has several technological clubs under it which cater to the hobbies of students in
technological fields other than their department. The clubs under the SnT council are
Aero-modelling Club
Electronics Club
Robotics Club
Programming Club
Business Club
Ham Club
Astronomy Club
Gliding and Soaring Club
These clubs inculcate in the students practical knowledge in the fields of electronics,
robotics, programming, aero-modelling. This helps students learn about several
components, like sensors, microcontrollers, ICs, etc., which otherwise they would not be
able to learn owing to a busy academic curriculum.
SOCIETY OF AEROSPACE ENGINEERING (SAE)
Society of Aerospace Engineers is the group of department students which acts as an
interface between professors and students, between different batches, organizes industrial
trips, departmental technical festival, fresher’s party, farewells etc. to ensure a healthy
culture in the Department.
