The aim of this module is to provide participants with knowledge and skills for working with people who have an Acquired Brain Injury within the context of the criminal justice system.
Learning OutcomesOn completion of this session it is anticipated that participants will be able to:
• Understand the relationship between acquired brain injury, offending behaviour and involvement in the criminal justice system
• Describe the unique factors which lead to overrepresentation and poor outcomes for people with Acquired Brain Injury in the criminal justice system
• Describe the relevant legislation and common law as it applies to the processing of people with Acquired Brain Injury through the justice system
• Recognize the factors precipitating an individuals offending behaviour and involvement in the criminal justice system
• Understand particular offence behaviours as they relate to Acquired Brain Injury, including violent offending and sexual offending
• Understand forensic treatment paradigms including the Risk-Need-Responsivity model
• Assist clients in addressing offending behaviour as part of a holistic psychological, behavioural, and systemic intervention
• Understand the role of the ‘expert witness; in providing testimony before courts and tribunals, as well as effective strategies for appearing in Court and dealing with cross examination.

Intermediate Module 7Screening for Acquired Brain Injury. How to screen and what to do next.
The aim of this module is to provide participants with knowledge and skills for implementing screening for people with a suspected Acquired Brain Injury.
It is preferred that participants will have completed Modules 1-4 or have significant experience working in the area of Acquired Brain Injury prior to undertaking this module.
Learning Outcomes:On completion of this session it is anticipated that participants will be able to:
• Understand the risk factors for Acquired Brain Injury
• Conduct Acquired Brain Injury screening using the arbias screening tool.
• Know what to do when you suspect someone has an Acquired Brain Injury. Knowing the Why, When and How of a referral.

Intermediate Module 8Co-morbidity. Acquired Brain Injury/Alcohol Related Brain Injury / Substance Related Brain Injury, Alcohol / Substance Abuse & Mental Health
The aim of this module is to provide participants with knowledge and skills for working with people who have an Acquired Brain Injury, specifically Alcohol Related Brain Injury/Substance Related Brain Injury who present with alcohol and/or substance abuse and mental health issues.
It is preferred that participants will have completed Modules 1-4 or have significant experience working in the area of Acquired Brain Injury prior to undertaking this module.
Learning Outcomes:On completion of this session it is anticipated that participants will be able to:
• Understand Co morbidity – ABI, substance use and mental health
• Understand Screening and assessment
• Understand and apply effective treatment principles and treatment planning
• Understand, design and apply Integrated treatment plans

Foundations Module 1An introduction: Exploring Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) & Alcohol Related Brain Injury (ARBI)
The aim of this module is to provide participants with an understanding of the nature of alcohol related brain injury and the cognitive, physical, behavioural, emotional and social implications of the person with the condition.
Learning OutcomesOn completion of this session it is anticipated that participants will be able to:
• Identify common causes of brain injury
• Describe the basic nature and incidence of brain injury
• Describe the basic anatomy of the brain and its functions
• Describe what can happen to the brain where excessive alcohol use has occurred
• Identify common deficits for people with Acquired Brain Injury
• Understand the deficits associated with Alcohol Related Brain Injury
• Describe the disorders associated with Acquired Brain Injury

Foundations Module 2Strategies for Working with a Person with an Acquired Brain Injury
The aim of this module is to provide participants with strategies in working with people who have an Acquired Brain Injury.
Learning OutcomesOn completion of this session it is anticipated that participants will be able to:
• Provide compensatory strategies for people with Acquired Brain Injury
• Assist with reducing demands on cognitive functioning
• Implement strategies to improve memory functioning
• Implement strategies to people with Acquired Brain Injury and frontal lobe dysfunction
• Implement strategies to assist with communication deficits • Provide appropriate information to people with Acquired Brain Injury

The aim of this module is to provide participants with strategies in working with people who have an acquired brain injury and exhibit behaviours of concern
Learning OutcomesOn completion of this session it is anticipated that participants will be able to:
• Recognise factors that influence human behaviour
• Understand brain-behaviour relationships
• Identify triggers for inappropriate behaviours
• Understand and implement basic behaviour management principles

Foundations Module 4Strategies for Working with People with Acquired Brain Injury
The aim of this module is to provide participants with an understanding of the complex needs associated with alcohol related brain injury in all areas of a person’s life, including psychological, social, physical and mental wellbeing. Learning OutcomesOn completion of this session it is anticipated that participants will be able to:
• Identify issues associated with ongoing alcohol use and alcohol related brain injury
• Understand the range of complex needs
• Understand and work with the challenges faced by the person with Acquired Brain Injury, the worker and the service system
• Understand the social consequences of Acquired Brain Injury
• Implement basic strategies to manage complex needs

Please Note: *Each module 1 & 2 is $90 dollars but they are held as a total training package of $180 for both.
All modules are stand alone however it is strongly recommended that Modules 1&2 and 3&4 be taken together for a complete learning package.
Metropolitan training is held at arbias offices in Brunswick. Training can be held in regional centres upon request.
