AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES ABOUT ABILITIES
Dentro de losverbos modalescomenzaremos estudiando uno de los ms utilizados: el verboCAN. Se trata de un trmino que indicahabilidad, es decir la capacidad de realizar algo o tambinposibilidad, o sea que algo es posible que se concrete, por ejemplo:He can build a house. l puede construir una casa.
Observe que el verboCANsiempre va acompaado por unverbo principalen infinitivo y como ya hemos mencionado, en las terceras personas del singular no se le agrega laS.
"Can"significa "poder" (ser capaz de). No obstante, tambin puede significar "saber hacer algo", es decir, indica tener una habilidad.
Usos de"Can":
Can se usa para: Solicitar o pedir algo Pedir y dar permiso Indicar una posibilidad Habilidades
Veamos ejemplos: Pedir: Can you come [keaniukam]?Puedes venir? Dar permiso: You can go. [iukeangou]Te puedes ir. Posibilidad: Who is that man? Itcanonly be your friend.Quin es se hombre? Slo puede ser tu amigo. Habilidad: She can drive [shi kean draiv]Ella sabe conducir
Veamos ahora la estructura de las oraciones afirmativas con "Can":
Estructura: Sujeto + can + verbo siempre en infinitivo.
Ejemplo 1:I can eat a lot[aikean iitalot].(Yo) puedo comer mucho.
Ejemplo 2:She can study now [shii keanstadi nau].Ella puede estudiar ahora.
Ejemplo 3:It can run (Itkeanran].Puede funcionar. (Una mquina, por ejemplo).

YES/NO QUESTIONS ABOUT ABILITY
En ingls hay dos tipos de preguntas bsicas: preguntas de s o no (Yes / No questions) ypreguntas informativas(wh-questions).Las preguntas de s o no se llaman tambien preguntas cerradas, porque hay solamente dos respuestas posibiles: s y no.

Para preguntar sobre la frecuencia de una accin combinamos el adverbio often - a menudo con how - cmo:

Los conectores de secuencia en ingls indican una sucesin, ya sea lgica o cronolgica entre dos o ms sucesos. Nos permiten narrar un proceso o una serie de sucesos encadenados. Algunos describen eventos que se suceden, otros describen eventos que suceden simultneamente.Algunos conectores de secuencia en ingls y su usoMuchos de los conectores son preposiciones o adverbios de lugar o de tiempo que funcionas como nexos o conjunciones.Estos conectores de secuencia indican el orden en el tiempo en que sucede un hecho respecto a otro, indicando su orden de sucesin, o bien, indicando si algo sucedi antes de lo que ocurre en el momento en que se habla. Como podemos observar, en esta lista de conectores de secuencia en ingls, hay conectores que cumplen funciones de conector de continuidad y de conectores de conclusin. Esto sucede as porque estos conectores, dentro del contexto de la frase o del prrafo, indican la continuidad o la consecuencia de la accin en el tiempo o por sucesin lgica, por lo que cumplen funciones de conectores de secuencia en ingls.
Veamos el uso en contexto de algunos de estos conectores de secuencia en ingls:
Firstly, you must get a car; then maybe I will think dating you. (Primeramentedebes conseguir un coche; entonces quiz piense en salir contigo).Afterthe test, we will go out to play basketball. THERE IS / THERE ARELas expresionesthere isythere arese utilizan en ingls para indicar que un objeto o una persona se encuentran en un sitio especificado. La particularidad de estas estructuras consiste en quethereno es el sujeto real del verboto be, aunque lo preceda.El sujeto real del verbo se encuentra en la posicin inmediatamente posterior:There isa bookon the table.There aretwo bookson the table.A diferencia de la palabra hay en castellano, que es invariable, la forma del verboto becambia en funcinde la naturalezadel sujeto real, como podis ver a continuacin:
1.Utilizamosthere iscuando el sujeto es: Un sustantivo contable singular:There is an apple in the basket.Observad que el sustantivo lleva el artculo idenfinido (a/an). Normalmente no se utiliza el artculo definidotheconthere is:*There is the apple in the basket. Un sustantivo incontable:There is some tea in the pot.There is ice on the street.Los sustantivos incontables pueden llevar cuantificadores comosome, any, much, a lot ofetc.2.Utilizamosthere arecuando el sujeto es: Un sustantivo plural:There are two apples in the basket.Importante:Recordad que en ingls lossustantivos irregulares,aunque no lleven la marca s,requieren el acuerdo en plural con el verboto be:There are a lot of people in the street.There are twenty children in the class.La forma negativade las expresiones existencialesthere is / there arese construye con la partcula negativanot:There isnt any apple in the basket.There arent twenty children in the class.Observad que para decir que no hay ningn o ninguna se utiliza el cuantificadorany.La forma interrogativase construye mediante una inversin entre el verboto bey el sujeto postizothere:Is there an apple in the basket?Are there twenty children in the class?
USE SOME OR ANY
El plural del artculo indeterminado "a" o "an" es "some" o "any"."Some"y"any"significanalgn,alguna,algunos,algunas. Pueden actuar modificando o determinando al sustantivo o como pronombre.There are some books.Hay unos libros.There aren't any chairs.No hay sillas.There are some.Hay algunos (pronombre).
SomeSe utiliza consustantivos contableseincontablesen oracionesafirmativas.Sustantivos contablesSomese traduce por "unos,-as" con lossustantivos contables, pero tambin se puede traducir como "algunos,-as" en oraciones afirmativas.Los sustantivos contables y el verbo irn en plural.There are some roses in my garden.Hay algunas/unas rosas en mi jardn.There are some birds there.Hay algunos/unos pjaros all.Sustantivos incontablesLa traduccin con lossustantivos incontablesno es tan literal. El sustantivo y el verbo irn en singular.There is some milk in the bottle.Hay algo de leche en la botella.
Any"Any" se utiliza con sustantivoscontableseincontablesen oracionesnegativaseinterrogativas.Se traduce como "ninguno/a" o "nada de" en oracionesnegativasy "algo de", "algn" o "alguno/a" en oracionesinterrogativas.There arent any potatoes in the kitchen.No hay ninguna patata en la cocina.Have you got any apples for the cake?Tienes alguna manzana para el pastel?Aunque en las oraciones interrogativas y negativas con "any" lossustantivos contablesy el verbo en ingls van en plural se traducen ensingular en espaol.Al igual que con "some" lossustantivos incontablesy el verbo irn en singular y la traduccin depender del contexto.I havent got any money.No tengo (nada de) dinero.Is there any sugar?Hay (algo de) azcar?
"Some" se usa tambin enoraciones interrogativasen peticiones, ofrecimientos o cuando se espera que la respuesta del oyente sea afirmativa.Can I have some water?Puedo tomar agua?

Las palabrasthere isythere areson usados en ingls para determinar la existencia de las cosas, pero a diferencia del espaol son usados segn la cantidad de los objetos ya sean singular o plural.
Para decir que hay solo un objeto se usara there is, por ejemplo:
Hay un lpiz en la mesaThere is a pencil on the table
Para decir que hay muchas cosas se utiliza there are, por ejemplo:

He's eatingat the moment.(Est comiendo en este momento.)
Is it raining?(Est lloviendo?)2. Tambin lo usamos para hablar de algo que est sucediendo en la actualidad pero no necesariamente cuando hablamos.En este caso, se utilizanexpresiones de tiempocomo "currently", "lately" o "these days". Ejemplos:
