About TheOrcas
The Orca of the Norway Fiords are known as "Type I Orca"They come to the area follow the herring run. These NorthAtlantic Orca are a resident orca and congregate in big pods of30-60 whales to hunt the herring using an incredible “carousell” method of hunting. The predators worktogether to break away a group of herring into a smaller, moremanageable “ball”. They encircle the herded herring, chasingthe fish tighter together and upwards. At the water's surface, herring try to escape by leaping into the air, creating a “boiling”effect. But the six-tonne orcas slap down their powerful tails, sending ashockwave that stuns their underwater prey. They then easilypick off the immobilised fish, leaving the water glistening withscales. We may also see Humpback and even Finn whales "Barge inon the Orcas" There have been several observations of killerwhales herding herring to a tight school towards the surface. And just as they start feeding the humpback and Fin whalescome and ‘take over’ the herring schools Humpbacks have their own astonishing and unique way ofcatching fish or krill. They create “bubble nets” where a singlewhale or a group blow a ring of bubbles out of their blowholes, encircling their prey. The whales will swim through their bubblenet with their vast mouths open, scooping up their catch. We hope to see all these incredible behaviours plus much muchmore on this amazing tour!
Swimming withOrcas!
Swimming with Orcas has been around for over 20 yearshowever only recently has it become more well known andavailable to more tourists to experience for themselves. The way it works is that once we find a pod of Orca wepop on our fashionable drysuits, hop into our smallertender and get nice and close while we assess what thewhales are doing. If they seem chilled and in a sociablemood we slip into the water quietly and wait for them tocome to us, which for a dolphin (Orcas are the largest ofthe dolphin family) -a human in the water its almostimpossible to resist! Then we can lie on the surface andwatch the orcas glide by and around us- or for the moreadventurous go ahead and freedive with them! Nothing is more humbling than sharing the underwaterworld with these highly intelligent, highly social mammalswho grow up to 10m in length and up to 6 tonnes!! Theexperience will leave you in awe and with an even greaterlove and understanding
