The Best Time to TravelSouthern Africa(South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia)In Southern Africa seasons are similar to those here in Australia with inland temperatures ranging from 22oC to 30oC in summer and 13oC to 20oC in winter. Coastal regions offer a Mediterranean climate. The rainy season is from November to March in most countries. At night and in the early morning winter temperatures can drop below OoC in desert regions within Botswana and Namibia.

Eastern Africa (Kenya, Tanzania)Eastern Africa is nearer to the equator and there is little seasonal temperature variation. Coastal temperatures average 29oC with high humidity, inland it is drier and cooler averaging 23oC. Long rains fall between November and December. Generally game viewing is easier in the dry seasons as animals congregate around more permanent water supplies. The most popular time to travel often coincides with school holidays when accommodation and safaris prove hard to confirm, it is therefore advisable to book early, wherever possible.

UgandaUganda enjoys a tropical climate tempered by altitude. Due to high altitude, the temperature ranges between 21oC to 25oC. The mountain areas, including the Ruwenzori Mountains are cooler and can even experience some snow on top of the mountains. The hottest period is from December to February where temperatures can reach 29oC. There are two rainy seasons: April to May and October to November, with April being the wettest month. The north however, has a wet season lasting from April to October. The best time to visit is from December to March and June-September.

RwandaRwanda is 3,000 feet above sea level with a pleasant tropical highland climate. Temperatures vary considerably from region to region because of the altitude difference. The average daytime temperature is about 30oC except in the highlands where is it is much cooler. There are four seasons: Long Rains are from mid March to mid May; Short Rains are from mid October to mid December; Dry Period is from mid May to mid October and Short Dry Season is from mid December to mid March.

The Okavango Delta is the result of seasonal flooding in the Angolan highlands. This water then flows 1200km south where it drains into the Kalahari Desert. The flood peaks between June to August when the Delta swells to 3 times its normal size, attracting animals for miles around and creating one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of wildlife. The Okavango Delta is therefore a permanent and seasonal home to a huge variety of wildlife. The majority of the 200,000 or so animals found in the Delta are not permanent residents, but leave with the summer rains to find new fields of grazing. The days are spent with the guide exploring the wonders of the Okavango Delta by mokoro, boat and on foot. Early morning and late afternoon excursions take advantage of the natural beauty on offer. Relax in the evenings listening to the many sounds of the African bush. The lodge is situated in the heart of this untouched and pristine wilderness area. 2 nights at Moremi Crossing (or similar). The park is dominated by the Chobe River, which runs through the park and where animals are regularly spotted coming to drink. Habitats found in the Chobe National Park range from lush flood plains, woodlands, to verdant flood grasslands and thickets bordering the Chobe River. Victoria Falls is possibly the most spectacular of the world’s big waterfalls. Divided into five separate waterfalls – Devils Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls and Eastern Cataract. 1,700 metres wide and dropping up to 100 metres the water creates clouds of spray drifting some 500 metres up into the sky, giving rise to the local name “Mosi-Oa-Tunya” or “Smoke that Thunders”.

Choose to stay on either side of the Falls; in Zimbabwe or in Livingstone, Zambia. There is no disadvantage, just a personal preference. Both provide a range a accommodation, awesome views of the falls and a selection of adrenaline activities.
