the development of a milk producer’s manual on milk hygiene and Mastitis control. In this

partnership, our focus is a dairy farmer. All that it entails to empower him produce clean milk,

market milk, access inputs and extension support is priority in this partinership.

In line with the common initiative of AFRISA and EADD to develop the dairy sector, the training

sought to do the following

2.1Goal

To build capacity extension workers of producer organization in commercial dairy animal

production and Extension

Page 7: AFRICA INSTITUTE FOR STRATEGIC ANIMAL RESOURCE …

2.2 Objectives

The target group for the tailored training program were field livestock extension workers, who

are involved in Institutionalizing extension services and systems in the Producer Organizations

(POs) to consistently increase production of high quality milk and improve dairy enterprise

management for sustainability.

The specify objectives were;

To design and implement tailored training programs on dairy animal production for 60

extension workers of producer organization in Uganda in six days.

To graduate the successful participants with and Artisan Certificate of AFRISA Makerere

University accrediting them as retooled extension workers in Dairy production.

The objectives, content and design for the proposed training programs took consideration of:

3.2 COURSE CONTENT

3.2.1 MODULE 1: DAIRY ENTERPRISE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

3.2.1.1 Envisioning and mindset cleansing

These are specifically prepared set of lectures that aimed to enhance mindset changes and

facilitating participants to demystify myths and strongholds that have hindered individuals,

households and national development. The major objective is to give participants “brutal facts”

about issues that are critical to individual and national success so as enlist motivation among

participants that will propel them to transformation. The issues handled include (1) Africa’s

memory lane from Slavery, Colonialism, Neo-colonialism and Africa today, (2) Africa’s strategic

historical mistakes (3) Population Growth and global land rush (4) Uganda’s Historic mistakes

and brutal facts on development (5) Africa and Uganda competitive advantages (6) Inherited

colonial Education system (7) The paradigm shift: from war to good governance, (8) The

paradigm shift: from colonial education system to SPEDANT educational system, (9) Nations

that have transformed: Israel, Singapore and North Korea, (10) Africa and Uganda of the future.

These lectures make participants realize that their destiny, their children destinies and that of

the nation is in their hands. The lectures show systemic approaches used by those nations that

have crossed the line. The lectures enlist slogans; “like yes we can, I will do it; my life will never

be the same again etc.”

All the participants participated in these lectures from the time of sensitization to the

completion of the training and the success of these courses is measured by the level of

motivation the participants have through the course. It was evident that these lectures were

impactful as evidenced by the enthusiasm of the participants throughout the training

3.2.1.2 Dairy Enterprise Development

These lectures were focused on enabling extension workers view dairy producers’ farms as

dairy business units. The participants were given skills to help dairy farmers plan profitable

dairy enterprises, these included; Dairy business planning; developing work plans from the long

and short term goals of their enterprises; do effective and timely financial analyses of the dairy

enterprises and be able to account for their production costs and profits made.

3.2.2 MODULE 2: WATER HARVESTING AND CONSERVATION TECHNOLOGIES

In this module participants discovered the importance of having clean safe water for dairy

production. The participants trained on the different methods of harvesting water from various

sources, its storage and usage.

Page 9: AFRICA INSTITUTE FOR STRATEGIC ANIMAL RESOURCE …

3.2.3 MODULE 3: DAIRY ANIMAL SELECTION AND BREEDING METHODS

The participants were introduced to a holistic approach of setting up a breeding program for a

farm taking into consideration the market requirements, the environmental interaction with

the breed, the farmer capacity to manage the dairy animal and the appropriateness to the

management system. Extension workers appreciated that the existing methods of breeding

may not yield good results if all these issues are not addressed. The participants were also given

tips on reading bull information offered by animal breeders.

3.2.4 MODULE 4: CALF MANAGEMENT AND HERD HEALTH MANAGEMENT

This module tackledthe variousmethods of prevention, control and management of diseases of

dairy cattle common in the region with focus on tick borne diseases, Mastitis and other diseases

of economic significance like Brucellosis. Issues of milk hygiene and milk quality management

on a dairy farm were also addressed and participants were made to realize the importance of

calf survival and proper growth in strengthening future performance of the dairy enterprise.

3.2.5 MODULE 5: ANIMAL HOUSING AND NUTRITION

This Module sought to address the challenges of meeting the nutrient requirements of dairy

cattle throughout the year in order to achieve consistent milk production. The course covered

topics ranging from pasture cultivation and establishment, Pasture management, pasture

preservation methods and feed mixing for dairy animals. In addition the participants were given

standard plans for establishment of farm fencing and animal housing which is both safe and

effective.

3.2.6 MODULE 6: FARM RECORDS MANAGEMENT

The participants discovered that records were an integral part in a dairy business enterprise

because they served the functions of (1) being pointers of whether the business is profitable or

not (2) being guides to routine management practices (3) Monitoring of individual cow

performance among others. The participants were given records templates used to obtain a

wide range of information in the dairy business for use in their extension work.

3.2.7 MODULE 7: TRAINING AND EXTENSION IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY

Participants were given working techniques in extension to use in the producer organizations

they work with. The participants appreciated the

3.2.8 MODULE 8: GENDER MAINSTREAMING IN LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT AND EXTENSION

There was a need to incorporate a module on gender and development to equipextension

workers with techniques to mitigate challenges that may arise as a result of economic booms in

households and also help household members participate fully in all dairy business activities for
