Welcome Peter Jennings

Five years of research. Interviews with 37 people in Canada, the U.S., Australia, Europe, Asia. Dialogue with personalities, average folks and Ph.Ds. It has indeed been a voyage of discovery! And it’s now complete: the book everyone is talking about: In Why Being Happy Matters, you’ll

join writer Peter Jennings for fascinating conversations with people like bestselling author and social activist John Robbins (of the Baskin Robbins family), Rolling Stones keyboardist and noted environmentalist Chuck Leavell, Oscar-nominated film director Roko Belic, award winning Canadian humorists Allan Fotheringham and Arthur Black, Happiness Expert Dr. Christine Carter, Playboy cartoonist Doug Sneyd, supermodel Monika Schnarre, Black activist Peter J. Harris. Time Magazine columnist Joel Stein, shark attack survivor Nicole Moore and Major League Baseball star Shawn Green. You’ll also meet non-celebrities who reveal to the author just how important happiness is in their lives. "My goal with Why Being Happy Matters is to inspire you," says Peter Jennings. "The book presents enlightening discussions with credible individuals who have discovered the secret to being genuinely joyful and content. People worldwide from all walks of life, from all socio-economic levels, from varied age groups who refuse to let the world get them down. The common theme that links them is: they flourish. They've harnessed the power of pleasure." The people you’ll meet in Why Being Happy Matters are individuals who confront the same life challenges all of us do. Some of them are hard-wired “happy campers". Others have to work at getting to their state of happiness, often rising from periods of despondency or real-life tragic events. But each of them has accepted that they have options on how to manage their lives: mastering the art of finding joy is available to them and to each of us. We do have the ability to integrate happiness into our existence. The author also interviews several Ph.Ds who are conducting important work into positive psychology (the study of happiness). The perceptions they reveal are truly insightful. And Jennings talks with Leo Bormans, author of the respected "World Book of Happiness", who shares his discussions with global experts. Happiness is a powerful game changer. It's an advantage available to all of us. Join the people you’ll meet in Why Being Happy Matters and discover how to let your inner life intensify with joy.

Why Being Happy Matters will be available at the luncheon for $23.

BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR JULLIETTE’S PLACE

From the Outreach Committee

Each year, by mid-August, the staff at Julliette’s Place, the Scarborough shelter for abused women and their families which our branch supports, are able to give us a list of the genders and ages of the children currently residing there who will be attending school in September. Then, thanks to the generosity of our group and its members, we begin purchasing backpacks and school supplies specifically for those children.

Each school-age child receives a backpack filled with age-appropriate materials such as pencils, pens, crayons, pencil crayons, erasers, markers, rulers, glue sticks, binders, binder paper, dividers, notebooks, math sets, locks, calculators, scissors, duotangs, small staplers, pencil sharpeners, pencil cases, sticky notes, highlighters, dictionaries, activity books, colouring books, and story books..

We also purchase extra supplies to be given to other school-age children as they come to the shelter throughout the year. As well, we provide craft materials such as crayons, markers, construction paper and drawing paper for the preschool children and much needed baby products such as wipes, lotions, shampoo, bath wash, and wash clothes.

We deliver all the items to the shelter in the last week of August, in time for the start of the new school year. This year, the staff at Julliette’s Place was, as always, most appreciative of RWTO Scarborough’s generous donations and they indicated that the children and their mothers are always very excited to receive these items and are very surprised and delighted at the quantity and quality of all the supplies.

Thank you very much once again to those members who made individual monetary donations and to those who donated supplies. This helped us greatly and was very much appreciated. It is gratifying to know that the backpacks and supplies that have been given by our group will go a long way towards helping the children at the shelter experience a positive beginning to the school year at a very difficult time in their young lives.

IN THE WORDS OF JOHN MCCAIN

August 29, 1936 - August 25, 2018

"It is your character, and your character alone, that will make your life happy or unhappy ... and you choose it." It's very important to lose gracefully. You know, no bitterness, no anger, no

remorse.’

Never Lie to a Smart Woman One day, the husband called his

wife, and asked: “Honey I’ve been asked to go fishing in China with my boss for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get the promotion. So, could you please pack enough clothes for a week, set out my rod & fishing box. We’re leaving from office & I’ll swing by the house to pick my things. Oh, and please pack my new blue silk pajamas!”

His wife immediately noticed that something was not right with the lousy excuse her husband managed to invent for the next week, but she decided to be a good wife and do what she was asked to.

After a week, her husband returned home, and looked tired, but explained to her that he was happy that he has done a good job by attending the fishing party.

The woman wanted to know all in detail, and asked about the boss, the weekend, the other colleagues, if they had caught fish, and so on. Her husband answered: “Yes, Lots of Salmon, Blue gill & a few Swordfish. But why didn’t you pack my blue silk pajamas?”

The woman replied: “I did…..They’re in your fishing box”.
