INT. FRANKS BEDROOM - DAY

A pen taps against a yellow legal pad. A hand turns over apage. A red tie on a black suit. A blue tie on the samesuit. An arm turns to check the time on a watch.

FRANK, a 20ish average looking man with shaggy hair and asimple appearance, is sleeping in his bed. On either side ofhis bed are two figures, DEVIL in a red tie and ANGEL in ablue tie, sitting on either side of the bed with the legalpads.

DEVIL is a beautiful, fierce looking 20ish woman, withbright red lipstick and the ability to stop people in theirtracks with her charming smile or menacing glare.

ANGEL simply comes off as soft--both in his gentleappearance and soft-spoken nature.

Both DEVIL and ANGEL are wearing business formal-wear, withsharp haircuts and even sharper smiles.

DEVIL and ANGEL are waiting, watching FRANK closely withpens hovering above their notepads to write down any actionthey observe.

The NOTEPADS are divided into two simple columns: "Good" isunderlined on the left side, "Evil" underlined on the rightside, separated by a line down the middle.

After a short period, DEVIL looks at ANGEL in anticipationof an explanation. Finally DEVIL breaks the long wait.

DEVILHes sleeping in pretty late...

ANGEL snaps back, having heard this argument before.

ANGELYou cant honestly try to arguethat!

DEVILIm not saying I was going to argueit... Im just making small talk...but still, it is pretty late.

ANGELMmm...

DEVILNow am I saying a more righteousperson may have been up by now?

DEVILMaybe. Does it make this man evil?Probably not... but still...

ANGELJust stop trying to argue anything

until he at least gets up!

DEVIL(under his breath)

And youre supposed to be therighteous one.

FRANK begins to stir. DEVIL and ANGEL both anxiously look athim, hunching over their pads to write something down. FRANKopens his eyes and is taken aback by DEVIL. FRANK rubs hiseyes in disbelief before rolling over to the other side,dismissing the sight as a sleep induced figment. He tries togo back to sleep on the other side, but just as he is about

to relax he opens his eyes to see ANGEL. FRANK quickly sitsup in the middle of his bed, jolting at the suddenrealization that the figments are really sitting next tohim.

Frank screams incoherent fragments of questions, scramblingback and forth in his bed, not knowing where to go.

FRANKWhat the hell is going on?

DEVILOoo, a bit of hostility right off

the bat.

DEVIL scribbles something down on her notepad. ANGEL cutsher off immediately.

ANGELI tell you every single time, theyall react a bit angry the firsttime they see us! It is completelyinadmissible, yet you insist onbringing it up every single time!

FRANK continues to scream frantic questions.

DEVILHold on a second Frank-- (points toANGEL, completely ignoring Franksfreakout) Thats what always pissesme off about you! You act like theburden of proof is completely mine!Like humans are inherently good and

DEVILit is up to me to prove itotherwise... well I got news foryou there Locke: humans are neithergood nor evil, so whatever "this"(gestures to FRANKs panic) is, iscompletely valid.

ANGEL and DEVIL gradually begin to turn away from FRANK,ignoring the poor mans confusion and panic, and focus onfacing one another to continue the petty argument.

ANGELYou can just keep trying it and seeif it ever works for you...

FRANK interrupts in a state of panic and fear.

FRANKWhat the fuck is happening?!? Ill

kill you, I swear!

DEVILSee that? That is some clearcharacter expression if you ask me!

FRANK jumps out of bed in his pajamas and grabs an umbrella.He brandishes at DEVIL and ANGEL

ANGELListen, Frank, I know this might bea tad startling but, listen... weare not here to hurt you.

DEVIL(ignoring ANGELs plea)

Why is it that people believe thatphrase? I mean, in my opinion, thatis exactly what someone would sayright before they hurt you!

ANGELWill you just be quiet for twominutes! Please! You always makethis first part so unnecessarily

complicated.

DEVILI make it complicated?!? You arethe one that tries to drag it outwith this whole "understanding" and"compassion" act... the person isstuck with us!

ANGELWill you please just grow up forone brief moment in your miserablelife and show some basic empathy?

Once again ANGEL and DEVIL are isolating FRANK to pursue

their own arguments with one another. FRANK is confused andfeels awkward over the personal fight happening in front ofhim. FRANKs fear and panic begin to melt away to feelingawkwardly trapped and ignored. He finally gathers enoughcourage to timidly interrupt.

FRANKDo you want me to leave?

ANGELWhat? No, no, no. Were fine...So... Who wants breakfast?

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

A frying pan cooks on the stove, sizzling bacon. With thesounds of ANGEL cooking, DEVIL sits at the table, observingFRANK closely with her pen at the ready on his legal pad.

FRANK grabs a napkin and DEVIL immediately jots somethingdown. FRANK coughs and DEVIL again writes something downfuriously. FRANK looks unsettled at her action.

FRANK sits with an expression of discomfort, trying tofigure out the situation before him. FRANK looks between thetwo figures, trying to politely smile, until the questions

burning inside of him come out.

FRANKSo... are you kidnapping me then?

ANGELOf course not! Kidnappers dontmake you breakfast. (to FRANK,holding a pitcher of Orange Juicefrom the refrigerator) Can I finishthis?

FRANKYeah go ahead. (pause) So who thehell are you then?

ANGEL sets down a plate full of food in front of FRANK andDEVIL. ANGEL tries to think of an answer before letting outa defeated sigh and reluctantly giving an unsatisfactoryresponse.

ANGELComplicated...

ANGEL walks away while DEVIL inches closer to help herexplanation to FRANK.

DEVILAlright... well you know howeveryone has a "devil" and an"angel" on their shoulder?

FRANKYeah...

DEVILWell, were nothing like that...but if it helps you, you can thinkof us like that.

ANGEL, cleaning dishes, yells over his shoulder to DEVIL tohelp her attempt at explaining.

ANGELTell him the Santas list thing...that usually helps them out.

DEVILOh yeah, that is a good one.Alright, you know how Santa has agood and bad list?

FRANK

(confused)But... its July.

DEVILJesus... stick with me here Frank!You do know of his lists, right?Well, were a bit like SantaClause. Our job is to decide if youend up on the good list or the badlist.

FRANK(confused)

Im sorry... so, youre here togive me presents?

DEVIL gives up in frustration, throwing her hands up in aseries of short jerks before walking away.

ANGELLet me try...

ANGEL sits down next to FRANK and speaks softly andintimately with him.

ANGELLook... the way Ive always lookedat it is that were... lawyers.Afterlife Lawyers. When you die,there is an afterlife. A heaven, ahell, nirvana, spiritualenergy--however you want to labelit--it exists. It is our job todecide where you end up. We comedown, observe your life, argueyour case based on what we see, andthen your afterlife is decided.(Pause) Do you think you

FRANK has a blank expression on his face.

FRANKCan we go back to the Christmaslist thing?

DEVIL again gets frustrated, runs back to the sitting area,and grabs FRANKs face to get his attention.

DEVILListen buddy, my esteemed colleague

and I are spectral avatars, sentfrom a higher plane of existence inorder to observe your actions onthis pragmatic world and debate themerits of your life in order tofigure out which afterlife willbest suit you when the time comes!What is confusing you?!?

The dust settles as FRANK gathers his thoughts and calmlyresponds.

FRANK(scared)

Well... I guess I dont really getthe term "spectral avatars"...

DEVIL lets FRANK go in disbelief and frustration.

ANGELYeah, but we kind of like the ringof it.

DEVILIt basically means were just

spectral manifestations in thisworld--we dont even have a truephysical presence. You can see usbut no one else in this world cansee, hear, or touch us. In fact,your hand would pass right throughme if you tried.

FRANKSeriously?

DEVILAbsolutely.

FRANK hesitantly raises a hand up towards DEVIL to test histouch. After pausing for a short while, he awkwardly andsuddenly swings his hand at the DEVIL, expecting it to passthrough her, but instead directly slaps DEVIL.

DEVILOw! Fuck!

FRANKYou said it would pass through!

DEVIL

Fuck! Why would you do that?

FRANK(flustered)

You... you said you were a-a-a...spectral manifestation orsomething!

DEVILAnd you would smack a spectralmanifestation?!? Most people justpoke me! Im writing that shit downas evil!

DEVIL scrambles for his notepad and begins furiouslyscribbling.

FRANKI thought my hand would go throughyou!

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

FRANK sits awkwardly between DEVIL and ANGEL on his couch,DEVIL holding a bag of peas against her ear. FRANK looksaround, trying to ignore the injured DEVIL who occasionallyshoots him dirty, hateful looks.

A long silence until FRANK breaks it.

FRANKI really am sorry...

DEVIL(childish)

Whatever... Im over it...

FRANKPlease dont write it down in myevil column.

DEVILYou should have thought about thatbefore you hit me!

FRANK nods, trying to come to terms with all the newknowledge presented to him. After a pause, he gets thecourage to ask a fundamental question that has beenbothering him.

FRANKSo... um... Im not dead am I?

ANGELWhat?!

DEVIL(annoyed)

Have you been listening to anythingweve been saying?

FRANKI dont know! This is all veryabnormal for me! You keep talkingabout physical manifestation andafterlife... I thought maybe I wasin purgatory!

FRANK springs up and runs to frantically put on some work

clothes and coat to leave. FRANK runs back into the room totalk to DEVIL and ANGEL as he ready to leaves.

FRANKLook Im sorry I have to leave...but I wasnt really expectingcompany today. You stay here and Iwill be back around six. Then youcan keep telling me all aboutphysical manifestation and--

DEVILOh were coming with you.

FRANKWhat?

ANGELWe have to. We need to observe allof your actions here on earth,including at work. Everywhere yougo, well go.

FRANKI cant bring you into the office!

ANGELWhy not?

FRANKBecause! (pause, trying to think ofa reason)... You would need visitorbadges!

FRANK gives up in an exasperated huff.

INT. OFFICE

FRANK walks quickly into the office, clearly disheveled andstressed. His clothes are a mess and he is trying to gatherhis briefcase together.

ANGEL and DEVIL follow closely behind him with theirever-present notepads.

A SECURITY GUARD sits at the desk in the lobby and calls outto FRANK.

SECURITY GUARDHey Frank, hows it going today?

FRANKIts been a weird day Pat...

SECURITY GUARDSo who are your friends?

FRANK angrily looks back at ANGEL and DEVIL

FRANKYou said no one could see you, youlying bastards!

Cut reveals FRANK is screaming at no one. SECURITY GUARDawkwardly pauses.

SECURITY GUARDUmmm... I meant the people from the5th floor who keep coming down and

asking where you are... are theyfriends of yours?

FRANKOh... I... uh... wait. The 5thfloor? (Rush of panic and worry) Ohgod!

FRANK runs to the elevator.

INT. ELEVATOR

FRANK, DEVIL, and ANGEL share the cramped elevator withFRANK standing in the middle. There is a long period ofawkward silence and tension. FInally, DEVIL jots somethingdown.

ANGELWhat are you writing?

DEVILWell... I mean... he did call us"bastards"

ANGEL thinks over the proposition for a little while.

ANGELHm, good point.

FRANK(desperate)

Oh come on!

INT. OFFICE FLOOR

FRANK, DEVIL, and ANGEL exit the elevator. FRANK begins tosneak towards his desk. As he is about to sit down, RACHELapproaches him and scares him.

RACHELHey Frank.

FRANKOh god!

As FRANK realizes who it is he has trouble adjusting fromhis nervous state to trying to act calm and relaxed forRACHEL who he obviously has a crush on.

FRANKRachel? Rachel!!! I mean...Rachel... how is it you? I mean,how are it going? (Collectshimself) How are you?

ANGELWhos Rachel?

RACHEL(friendly laughing)

Im doing fine. How about you? Idont think Ive ever seen you latebefore in my life. Rough morning?

DEVIL(to ANGEL)

You dont think... (gesturesbetween RACHEL and FRANK)

ANGELOh boy... this is rough...

FRANK

RACHEL(genuinely sweet)

RACHEL smiles awkwardly and shakes the hand before slightlylaughing and leaving.

FRANK, DEVIL, and ANGEL start walking throughout the office.

DEVILWhat was all of that?

FRANKThat was my friend and coworker,Rachel.

ANGEL

Frank... were spectral avatars...you dont have to lie to us.

DEVILCmon! Tell us about her.

The boss, MR. RHINEHORN, walks up behind FRANK lookingangry.

FRANKNo! No! You know what? We are notdoing this right now!

MR. RHINEHORN begins to walk down the hall, revealing ANGELand DEVIL on either side of a scared FRANK.

INT. RHINEHORNS OFFICE

MR. RHINEHORN sits in a large office chair menacingly. FRANKsits across in a small chair. DEVIL and ANGEL wander around

behind FRANK.

TENSION between the two parties is clear.

MR. RHINEHORNFrank... how many years have I beenyour boss?

FRANKWell... its hard to keep trackwhen youre having so much fun--

MR. RHINEHORN6 years... and how many times haveyou been late in that period?

FRANKIm pretty sure this is my firsttime sir... in fact, I have beenearly so many times that--

FRANK dejectedly gets up and leaves. The ANGEL shows

sympathy towards his plight while DEVIL is upset at his lackof courage.

INT. OUTSIDE OF RHINEHORNS OFFICE

FRANK wipes his face in frustration and exhaustion at thedays crazy events.

DEVILI cant believe that...

FRANKWell what are you going to do, hes

my boss--

DEVILNo not him! You!

FRANKMe?!?

DEVILYou need to stand up for yourselfin there! That man is not onlybeing unreasonable, he is adownright asshole!

ANGELLook, everyone just relax okay?

DEVIL takes a deep breath and realizes her intensity towardsFRANK.

FRANK, DEVIL, and ANGEL begin to walk together down thehallway.

ANGEL(confused, hesitant)

EXT. PARK BENCH

FRANK sits in the middle of the bench, hunched over with hisface in his hands, on the verge of despair and tears. ANGELis hunched next to him trying to comfort him, while DEVIL

leans back with his arms over the bench.

FRANKIm going to die?!?

ANGELIm sorry! I thought we mentionedthat... surely you must haveassumed... I mean why else would webe down here deciding yourafterlife if you werent going todie soon?

FRANKI thought you were being proactive!Oh god! How soon?

DEVIL(flips through notepad)

FRANKSo this is how it ends... my lifeis officially over...

ANGELWell not officially, I mean theres

a lot of paperwork-- ya know what?Thats not the point, you stillhave three days left!

FRANKSo what? I might as well killmyself now... these final days aremeaningless!

ANGELHey thats not true! These last fewdays are extremely important. Youhave to forget about death and live

them like you would every otherday.

FRANKWhy? So that you can fill out yourstupid reports?

ANGEL(sympathetic)

No... well yes, kind of... but alsobecause... because... look we see alot of peoples lives doing thisline of work, right? We see them in

their final moments, in theirangriest, in theirhappiest--everything. And the onething Ive learned? People arealways so focused on what theyvedone with their lives, but never onwhat their lives have done forthem. When the end rolls aroundthey feel they need to make all theexciting memories and life goalsthey can right before the end...but all the moments in your lifeare important... enjoying a nicebreakfast, getting angry attraffic, choosing the elevator overthe stairs because youre tired...all these small things are whatmake up peoples lives. In the end,its not about living each momentto the fullest, its about taking afull moment to notice youre

RACHEL runs by the park bench jogging. She pauses and smilesat FRANK, taking out her earphones.

RACHEL

Oh, hey Frank.

FRANKRachel!

ANGELSpeak of the devil...

DEVILPlease dont...

RACHELWhat are you doing out here?

FRANKOh you know... just thinking aboutlife.

RACHELMind if I join you?

FRANK(surprised)

I--um--you... really? Of course!Please sit down.

RACHEL begins to move toward the bench and is about to sitdown on ANGEL.

FRANKWait no! Not there!

RACHELWhat? Why?

FRANKBecause... because... the sun willbe in your eyes. Here, just sitdown on the other side.

RACHEL smiles and begins to move toward the other side ofthe bench where DEVIL is sitting.

DEVILSeriously? Screw you buddy!

DEVIL reluctantly gets up and begins to scribble angrily onher notepad.

ANGEL smiles widely at FRANK, trying to convince him of theopportunity that has just presented itself.

ANGEL and RACHEL begin to say lines at the same time.

ANGEL & RACHELWell this is nice isnt it?

FRANKHmmm?

ANGEL & RACHELI said, this is nice isnt it?

FRANKYes... yes... it is...

ANGELTalk to her!

FRANK is confused and flabbergasted by the advice. Finallyhe clears his throat and gathers the courage to speak.

FRANKSo how is work going?

RACHELOh, you dont want to hear aboutthat. I feel like we never talkabout you! How are you?

FRANKMe? (looks at ANGEL and DEVIL) Mylife is a bit unbelievablelately... Ive really beenevaluating my character.

RACHEL(laughs)

Evaluating your character? And whathave you found?

FRANK looks at ANGEL, deep in contemplation. Finally hegathers courage, gives a confirming look at ANGEL, and looks

at RACHEL.

FRANKWell... maybe we could talk aboutit over a quick bite to eat?

RACHEL smiles.

INT. RESTAURANT

FRANK sits across from RACHEL at a small intimate table in acafe. DEVIL and ANGEL awkwardly sit on either side of FRANK,distracting from the tender, intimate date.

A montage of FRANK and RACHEL laughing, sharing, and havinga wonderful time. It is broken up by petty interruptionsfrom ANGEL and DEVIL. For instance, DEVIL reaches and grabsfood off of FRANKs plate and FRANK slaps her hand away, orANGEL tries to talk to the waiter but is ignored.

RACHEL(laughing)

Im going to run to the restroomreally quick.

FRANKOh alright.

RACHEL leaves. FRANK looks between ANGEL and DEVIL

FRANKSo does this go in the good or evilnotepad?

DEVIL and ANGEL look at each other with a smile.

DEVILWell speaking of that... Im afraid

we actually have to duck out for alittle bit to take care of some"spectral business".

ANGELYeah so were going to have toleave you during your date for alittle bit.

DEVILWe do, we do. But we figure... ya

DEVIL and ANGEL get up to leave

FRANK

Thanks...

DEVIL and ANGEL leave the restaurant as RACHEL returns tothe table. FRANK looks over his shoulder at DEVIL and ANGELleaving as RACHEL begins to talk to him again.

FADE OUT.

INT. OFFICE FLOOR

FADE IN to RACHEL sitting in the chair at her desk whileFRANK sits casually on the desk, they are both laughing andsipping coffee. ANGEL and DEVIL sit over in chairs in the

background.

MR. RHINEHORN walks up.

MR. RHINEHORNI hate to break up this little "IceCream Social"... Frank could I seeyou in my office please?

FRANKYes sir.

FRANK and RACHEL look worriedly at one another.

FRANK starts to walk down the hallway. DEVIL springs up andjoins him as he walks.

DEVILDo you think youre gettingpromoted?

FRANKShut up! This is serious! You sawhow mad he got when I was 10minutes late.

DEVILYeah and now you were sitting

talking to a coworker... he mightjust kill you.

FRANK(sincere, worried)

I dont know what hell do, butits not going to be good... I haveto think of a good excuse to goalong with my apology.

DEVIL steps in front of FRANK and cuts him off.

DEVIL

No. You are not going to go inthere and just accept his unfairbullshit again. Stop apologizingfor shit you know isnt reasonable!

FRANKBut theres nothing I can do!

DEVILLook... I know my buddy spent thewhole day telling you about beingtrue to yourself and what not, andthat was great for getting you thegirl and all, but sometimes life isabout shaking it up! Take somerisks, add some mystery to yourlife! If you only live your lifebased on what feels natural, thenyou will never try anything new. Iwant you to go in there, fightevery instinct you have toapologize and stand up to him!

FRANKYou know what... youre right god

DEVILThats the spirit! Plus, if it goeswrong, you only have one day leftanyway...

FRANK ignores the last comment by DEVIL and bursts into theoffice.

RHINEHORN sits at his desk as before, while FRANK powerfullystands across from him.

RHINEHORN

Frank... have you ever gonefishing? Do you know what happensif you talk to your coworkers whileyoure fishing? It can--

FRANKIm going to go ahead and stop youmid-terrible fishing metaphor andsay a few things to you.

INT. OFFICE FLOOR

FRANK proudly walks out of the office. FRANK high-fives

DEVIL as he continues to walk

DEVILOh thats my man! How did it feel?

FRANKIt felt amazing! So exhilarating!So powerful!

INT. EXT. MONTAGE

A short montage showing DEVIL and ANGELs presence inFRANKs life over the next couple of days.

ANGEL and DEVIL stand on either side of FRANK as he brusheshis teeth, writing down in their notepads. FRANK looks

annoyed that they are writing down something so trivial.

FRANK sits with RACHEL on the grass at a park with his armaround her. ANGEL sits down next to FRANK and puts his armaround him on the other side. FRANK gets annoyed and chasesANGEL away. RACHEL is startled and FRANK tries to play itoff as if he was swatting a fly away.

FRANK is sitting at his desk at work, ANGEL is helping himfinish something on the computer while DEVIL goofs around inthe background. MR. RHINEHORN walks up. FRANK tenses up butis relieved when MR. RHINEHORN gives him a thumbs up and anapproving nod.

FRANK is watching TV late at night with DEVIL and ANGEL oneither side of the couch. DEVIL and ANGEL are fallingasleep, letting their notepads slide out of their hands.FRANK looks on either side of him, smiles at his new foundfriends, and turns off the television.

EXT. STREET

FRANK stands on the street looking nervous. ANGEL and DEVILstand a little ways behind him.

FRANKSo this is where it happens?

ANGELYep... on this street in about 1minute. A car is going to come downthat street and kill you on impact.

FRANKWhat a cliche way to go...

DEVILYeah, I always prefer the more

unique deaths myself.

ANGELAre you ready?

Reveal a TRUCK driving down the road towards FRANK. Suspensebuilds between the truck coming down the road. FRANK takes adeep breath and walks out into the middle of the street. Helooks at the TRUCK and begins to close his eyes inanticipation.

Finally the TRUCK passes anti-climatically, slowly drive

past FRANK who has jumped out of the way and is now layingon the sidewalk

DEVIL and ANGEL watch from the side of the street

DEVILAnd... there it goes.

FRANK gets up and dusts himself off in disbelief.

ANGELIndeed it was... nice going Frank!You fucked up your own death!

FRANKI didnt know I had to stay stilland let it hit me!

DEVIL moves in close to FRANK and puts her hands on hisshoulders.

FRANK looks deeply at DEVIL and ANGEL

DEVILDont mention it Frank.

DEVIL and ANGEL begin to walk away. FRANK shouts to them.

FRANK

Will I ever see you guys again?

ANGELOh, well be around.

DEVIL(grins)

But you wont see us.

FRANK realizes what they mean, smiles and turns away tryingto take it all in. When he turns back, ANGEL and DEVIL aregone from the street.

EXT. OUTSIDE CAFE

FRANK walks up to RACHEL who is standing outside a cafe,waiting to go in. He hugs/kisses her, beaming withhappiness.

RACHELWell look at you! Arent you in ahappy mood.

FRANK(smiles)

Its a brand new day.

FRANK puts his arm around RACHEL and they go inside. As theywalk in, they reveal DEVIL and ANGEL who are sitting at thetable outside. FRANK does not acknowledge them at all sincehe can no longer see them. DEVIL and ANGEL smile and watchhim go inside. FRANK looks back outside and the table isempty again.
