The Bandra police for un-known reason carried thewhole incident very secretlyand swiftly. The Bandra po-lice did not follow basic pro-cedures and norms.API Mukund Yadav said,

“We got a tip off about drugsat Gupta’s house. We were ina hurry and therefore did notmaintain a diary with thelocal police.”“We did not find anything

from Rajesh, so Ipresented him withsenior police in-spector of Bandrapolice and he or-dered me to leavehim,” he added.API Bhaskar Kore

ofVakola police sta-tion said, “We haveregistered a caseagainst the landlordJ.C D’souza whoplanned the wholething up. He sayshis lawyermade thewhole plan.We havealso registered caseagainst 30 unknownpeople who tookaway all valuables.Search for Shaikh ison. As the case insensitive I cannotdivulge or commentmore on the case.”

The case raisesserious questions.1) Why did Bandrapolice officials notinform the Vakola

police about the raid, as itwas not in their jurisdiction?2)Why did the Bandra policenotmaintain station diary forthe same?3) If drugs were found fromRajesh’s house, why was nocase against him taken andwhy was he set free?4) Why did the Bandra copshit Rajesh so badly withouthaving any case against him?

In a most Bizarre incidentthat shows the Mumbaipolice at its worst, a 20-

year-old man was picked upillegally by the Bandra policein the wee hours of Tuesdayfrom Kalina, Santacruz.Rajesh Gupta alias Guddu

(20) was arrested by the po-lice on suspicion that he wascarrying drugs. Shockinglyjust after the police pickedthe youth, unknown peopleemptied all the valuablesfrom the youth’s house. Moreover, the unknown menpicked up Gupta’s neighbourSufiyan Sheikh (28) and emp-tied all the valuables fromhis

house as well. The neighbourwas also forcibly taken awayby the unknown people andis still missing. In the whole incident the

Vakola police have arrestedthe landlord of the area whoplanned to ‘vacate’ the area. The landlord tipped the Ban-dra police about the drugs

and they raided the house. However, the incident raisesvery serious question in theway Bandra police operated. The whole incident took

place inKalinawhereGuptare-side with his parents and runssmall fruit selling business.Sheikh resides next to Gupta’shouse. At the time of the inci-dent parents of Rajesh and Su-

fiyanwere out ofMumbai.On Tuesday at 1.15 a.m.

around nine police officialsfrom Bandra police station, claiming to be detection staff, barged into Rajesh’s house, was alone. They immediately started

abusing him and created

ruckus and asked him, ‘Maalkahan par hai’ indicatingwhere the drugs are. Before Gupta could under-

stand anything the copsbegan hitting him. AlthoughRajesh screamed for help thecops continued unabated.“All of them came in

dressed in civilian clothing. One of them even removedhis gun and placed it on myhead and threatened to shootme,” said Gupta. Whenneighbours asked why the

copswere takingGupta away, the cops allegedly replied, ‘wehave found two packets ofdrugs from his house’The next thing they didwas

to forcibly entered Shaikh’shouse, remove all the valu-ables fromhis house and takehim with them. Shaikh is still

untraceable and residentsfear the worst.Social worker Naina Patil

said, “This is themost bizarreincident I have ever heard of.How cops can be so cruel. This is jungle raj going in citylike Mumbai.”The residents of Jamlipada

area in Kalina called severaltimes on 100 number but thecops never arrived. In themorning one of the residentswent to Bandra police stationand brought Rajesh home.

“Some places just touch the heart at first sight and this one, little known and indescribable in words, happens to be the best amongst them,” says ADC’s Art Director and ‘rural tramp’ Rajan Ranshoor. With camera in hand and a penchant to hunt out travel gems in rural Maharashtra, he brings to life inpictures the Pandeshwar Temple, 56 kms from Pune at Jejuri, a place that, ashe says brings ‘historic fantasy to life’..

Apart from being the most revered templeafter Kashi in Hindu culture, the stone uponstone marvel boasts of architecture andsculpture that despite being centuries old, stillstands tall today. Legend says it was built by thePandavas by stealth during the night throughtheir years in ‘Vanvas’ meaning forced exile. Andwhile we might draw the line at believing thistemple is five thousand years old, we can easilybelieve, as temple pujari Dalviji (featured aboveright) explained, that it could be the only templein the world that hosts the “Shiva Linga” upon athrone. “See it to feel it” is Ranshoor’s advice.

Roxanne Davur is a 60-year-oldanimal rights activist living inTakve village in Taluka Karjat,

District Raigad. She runs an animalshelter on her ancestral property.Since the last one-and-half year en-croacher, Sandra Jhala, has squattedonher property and attacked her re-peatedly. But the police have refusedto act. The Tehsildar’s office hasgiven a clear order of eviction inRoxanne’s favour but the police re-fuse to take action on thematter. In 2012, Jhala requested Roxanne

to shelter her dogs as Jhala had shutdownherownshelter inAhmedabadto go and look after her terminally illmother inKolhapur. She came to set-tle the dogs down and never left.Jhala then began harassing Roxanne

with threats and extortiondemands.Roxanne approached the police forhelp but Jhala had already paid thepolice station so they refused to en-tertain Roxanne’s complaints. After almost a year, a case was ac-

cepted by the new Senior Inspector,Dhas. The police then forwarded thismatter to the Tehsildar. On learningabout this, Jhala approached themedia andgot anarticlepublished inwhich she falsely claimed that shehadpaidRs.8 lakhs andhad a 99 yearrent lease signed. These false claimswere laid bare in the Tehsil courtthrough an enquiry by a Court Com-mission. Thereafter, the Tehsildarpassed an eviction order on Alexan-dra Jhala, who was an encroacherand declared that Roxanne Davurwas the rightful owner of the prop-erty. But the Karjat Police and SP

Shinde Raigad refused to act onthis order. This emboldened Jhala who has

since then attackedRoxanne severaltimes. Besides encroaching on herland (in violation of IPC sections441, 442, 448, 449), Jhala has brokeninto her house (445), falsely usedRoxanne’s address to get phone con-nections and bank accounts (465),has abused Roxanne verbally (504),tried extortion (384, 386, 327),threatened to kill Roxanne, her em-ployees and animals (506 part 2),slandered Roxanne (500), attackedphysically (323), attacked with ironrods (324), smashed Roxanne carwith iron rods, has got men to stalkRoxanne (345 D), is getting moreandmore trespassers into the prop-erty (441, 442, 448, 449), and on June1 Jhala and her employee hit Rox-

anne with bricks (324).Many of these are cognisable of-

fences and Jhala and her accom-plices should immediately bearrested. But the police refuse to act.It is believed that the police havefailed to take action because the en-croacher Jhala had initially paid thelocal police station but it is notknown what power she has overthem to enjoy this immunity. More-over, the police, including senior of-ficers, have displayed a very callousattitude towards Roxanne and theycommonly use slurs like ‘pagalbaavi’ or ‘yedi mhatari’ while refer-ring to her.Roxanne Davur approached Aam

Aadmi Party and when PreetiSharma Menon of Aam Aadmi vis-ited the police station in January2013, the head constable threatened

to file a false FIR alleging that PreetiSharma Menon had attempted toassault the police officer. This mat-ter had been brought to S.P. Shinde’snotice and he had promised actionagainst the Head Constable in 48hours but nothing was done. AAPthen approached I.G. (Konkan)Sukhvinder Singh but he did noth-ing either.“After the attack on June 1, where

the police did not even turn up, de-spite several calls and messages tothe SPI, the SP and the IG, I took thematter to Home Minister R.R. Patil. He called S.P. Shinde and asked himto arrest the attackers, but no avail.Yesterday, I was made to sit in thepolice station from 12 noon to 9.30p.m. in the night but no FIR wasfiled and no arrests made,” said adistraught Roxanne.

storm after actor and TV real-ity show winner, Vindoo, whoarrested on May 22 for his al-leged links with bookies, ad-mitted to having placed betson Meiyappan’s behalf.Senior counsel Satish

Maneshinde, lawyer for Vin-doo Dara Singh, said thatthey will seek compensationfrom the Bombay HighCourt. “The case underwhich my client was arrestedis illegal and I think weshould apply for compensa-tion to the high court,” said

Maneshinde. He pointed outthat there was no lawpresently against betting andit was wrong to parade theduo as the prime accused inthe case. Maneshinde alsopointed out that the duo wascharged under sections thatwere bailable, and yet hadbeen kept in custody for overa week. He hinted at a deeperconspiracy within the BCCIthat had resulted in Vindooand Meiyappan being ar-rested in a case registered inMumbai. “This is the second time

that, in a political war in theBCCI, such a case has beenregistered. It should not havebeen done,” he said. Whenasked about when theywould seek compensation,he said they would decidethat in due course. However,Meiyappan’s lawyer wasmore restrained and refusedto comment on the matter ofany deeper conspiracy in-volving the BCCI. The lawyersaid that they had argued onthe premise that there wereno grounds to keep Meiyap-pan in custody and he hadtherefore been granted bail.

This is what Congressspokesperson Anant Gadgilhas called rival party, BJPBy Suyash Padate

Taking a dig at an internal strifewithin the BJP the state Con-

gress spokesperson Anant Gadgilhas said that the saffron party canbe described as ‘a pizza withouttoppings’.

A rift between the senior-mostleaders of the BJP, many of whombelieve they deserve to be thePrime Ministerial candidate, hasbeen playing out in the open forweeks, embarrassing the party andspawning concern that it couldturn voters away.

Against the backdrop of these de-velopments, Gadgil said, “The coldwar in BJP has heated up, dividingthe top leadership and leaving theparty fold without toppings.”“Though BJP president Rajnath

Singh is saying that L.K. Advani’s re-marks about Shivraj SinghChouhan

were misinterpreted, the cracks arewide open now. But this is not thefirst time the infighting has come tothe fore. This party has a long his-tory of internal bickering since 1954when Moulichandra Sharma ten-dered his resignation from erstwhileJan Sangh’s president’s post after the

tiff with Dindayal Upadhyay,” headded further.Gadgil pointed out that then

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vaj-payee was faded up with the inter-nal squabble in the BJP and oneday suddenly announced in theParliament that he will not contestthe Lok Sabha election in future.Advani’s picture was published onthe cover page of BJP’s mouthpieceignoring Vajpayee. Nitin Gadkariwas forced to quit from the presi-dent’s post due to cold war amongthe top leaders.

IPL mess diverting attentionfrom UPA-II scams

By Prashant Hamine

The Indian PremierLeague (IPL) fixing con-troversy has sidetracked

public attention from otherscams of the UPA-II regimelike 2G and Coalgate, and isbeing seen as a national cor-ruption issue. Speaking tonewspersons here, the BJPMP who is BJP national gen-eral secretary and in chargeof Maharashtra, Rajiv PratapRudy stated that the partywas opposed to theUPA issu-ing an ordinance to imple-ment the Food Security billand demanded that themon-soon session of the parlia-ment should be preponedand the proposed law be de-bated threadbare.Replying to queries, he said

that the bill concerned 60 percent of the population andhence should not be hurriedthrough. He stated that therewere riders to the bill as theNCP was opposed to certainclauses. Declaring support tothe bill, he said that the UPAshould clear the internal dif-ferences over it. The govern-ment had pushed throughthe MNREGA, promising 100days job for the rural poor, but after evaluation it wasfound that the scheme onlyprovided for 28 days of work.

Asked to comment on L KAdvani praisingMPCMShiv-raj Singh Chauhan instead ofGujarat CM Narendra Modi,Rudy sought to clarify thatsince it was the party’s stateexecutive meeting, the mainspeaker had to praise thechief minister of that state. He further tried to downplayAdvani’s remarks by arguingthat the senior party leader

had praised all the BJP chiefministers. He denied thatthere were any differenceswithin the party on theissue.Earlier, the BJP national

spokesperson dismissed talkof a third front led govern-ment coming to power in2014. He stated that, cur-rently, the Left parties do nothave more than 50 MPs

which can lead theway to theformation of a third frontgovernment at the Centre. Heaccused Prime Minister DrManmohan Singh of misus-ing the JPC and CBI to clearhis name from the 2G andCoalgate scams, adding thatthe UPA-II government wason its last legs and was sur-viving purely on the supportof the SP and BSP.

The existence of water harvesting sys-tems in India has a long history. Al-

though a wide range of experience isavailable, the development of the societymakes it necessary to revise these sys-tems according the new requirements. The use of artificial storage facilities

within a rainwater harvesting system re-quires exact calculations regarding theirstorage capacity depending on its inten-sive costs. Annual amounts of rainfallhave to be statistically evaluated to esti-mate the probability of maximal rain-falls as well as long dry periods. The sizeof the artificial storage is to be choseneither by collecting the maximum ofrainwater or to adjust it according therequirements of the user..The rule of thumb is 600 gallons of

water per inch of rain per thousandsquare feet of catchments area. Not all the rain that falls can actually

be collected. Efficiency is usually pre-sumed to be 75% depending on systemdesign and capacity. Here is the basicformula for calculating the potentialamount that can be collected:(Catchments area) x (inches of rain) x(600 gallons) x (.75)

Catchments Area = 1200 square feetAmount of rain = 2 inchesGallons of water collected per inch ofrain per 1000 square feet = 600 gallonsPercent Efficiency = 75%(1200 square feet) x (2 inches of rain) x(600 gallons) x (.75)= 1080 gallonsTherefore a 1200 square foot roof will

collect 1080 gallons of water on a daywith 2 inches of rainfall. Using this for-mula and your region’s average rainfallnumbers combined with an estimatedwater need, you should be able to cal-culate the approximate size of your tankor barrel system. This takes care of the requirement of a

few. Harvesting rainwater in bulk quan-tities, which can cater to the needs oflarger community, through out the yearrequires large space & locationMost cities in India have large stadi-

ums, horse racing grounds which areopen to sky. Being a resident ofMumbai,I have chosenThis city formy formulation, once the

concept is understood, it can be con-ceived in other parts.CONVERTING THE MAHALAKSHMI

HORSE RACING GROUNDS IN TO ARAIN HARVESTING TANK, WITHOUT

DISTURBINGTHE RACES. Size of the Mahalakshmi course= 325Acres (1.32 km2)

One acre = 43560 sqft Seen above 1200 sqft can save 1080gallons of water, then

14157000 sqft will save 12741300 gal-lons of water

Considering average requirement of10 gallons per head per day, at only 2’rainfall ,we cater to the requirementof 1274130 persons.( please note inthis illustration only 2’ of rain is con-sidered, in reality it is manifold)

ConstructionA large Tank can be made from materi-als such as cement, or metal,The height of this mammoth tank

could be raised to a minimum of 20 ft,so as to allow for natural gravitationalforce, & also allow the racing to happenundisturbed. Underneath. There are so many available sites in

Mumbai, & other parts of this country, can our engineers not design such atank? I am sure this is possible, but is ex-pensive, one time expense in every planof 5 years should see through our coun-tries water problem.

about the race course. TheMunicipal Commissioner’sreport will make the issuemore clear. Our stand is thatevery day thousands of peo-ple come to Mahalaxmi andHajji Ali, this open spacewould serve as garden forthem.”Ravindra Waikar Sena,

medicine, it is suspected thatthe girl took the extreme stepas shewas upset over her per-formance in the class XII ex-aminations.A student of a Bhayandar

based Commerce college,Anita was a bright studentand had scored 73 per cent inher HSC exams. Alreadyupset over her performancewhen results were declared

unconscious state onMondayevening and rushed her to aprivate hospital inMira Road, where she breathed her last

Thepolitical war in Chhattisgarh after therecent Naxal attack has taken a strangeturn. A Congress versus BJP battle has

become a Congress versus Congress in-ternecine feud. The party has turned on itselffollowing reports that the National Investiga-tion Agency’s preliminary inquiries point to aCongress hand in the Naxal ambush that ledto the death of 27 persons including top stateleaders. The NIA’s needle of suspicion seems to be

pointing at the faction led by former chiefminister Ajit Jogi who, along with son Amit, was mysteriously absent when the convoywas ambushed by the Naxals on May 25. Therevelations have sent tempers soaring andCongressworkers are now venting their wrathon Jogi loyalists in different parts of the state. They’ve hunted themdown, locked them intorooms and beaten them mercilessly withshoes and iron rods, leaving several badlyinjured. The fight followed Jogi loyalist and one of

the two survivors of the attack, CongressMLAKawasi Lakhma, to the corridors of theswankyGurgaon hospital inwhichVC Shuklais being treated for the four gunshot woundshe sustained. Lakhma turned up to inquireabout his condition and there, right outsidethe ICU where Shukla was lying, a Congressgroup led by unionminister Charan DasMa-hant, now the new state chief, waylaid himand beat himwith shoes.Therewas completepandemonium in what is supposed to be asilent zone but the hospital staff didn’t dareintervene as the two Congress factions triedto settle scores. Later, a bleeding Lakhmawas handed over to the police who wereinstructed to dump him somewhere nearKarnal. It is indeed odd that only two Congress

leaders survived the Naxal attack: Lakhmaand Gopi Madhwani. And both are consid-ered to be close to Jogi. They stood by Jogi, theonly ones to do so in a group of 51 CongressMLAs, when the chief minister of the newlycreated Chhattisgarh state was being ap-pointed in 2000. Although he didn’t have thenumbers, Jogi became the CM that year, thanks to Sonia Gandhi who had a soft spotfor him. But now, his stars seem to be waningand those of arch rival Digvijaya Singh rising.Although from neighbouring Madhya

Pradesh, Singh has managed to extend histentacles across the border. The murderedstate chief, Nand Kumar Patel, and his suc-cessor, Mahant, are both his confidantes.

Hell hath no furyThose who accompanied Congress presi-

dent Sonia Gandhi to Chhattisgarh after theNaxal attack on a Congress convoy werestunned by the depth of her fury. Sonia isknown as a composed, polite person. But in

Raipur, she lost her cool with everyone, fromchief minister Raman Singh to the chief sec-retary Sunil Kumar and other senior officialsto her own party workers. “You are lying,” sheis believed to have shouted at Sunil Kumar atone point. And as Raman Singh fumbledwithweak explanations for the security lapse thatled to the killings, she told him angrily thatthe Centre had the power to dismiss him “inone minute,” according to someone familiarwith the discussions. She didn’t calm down even at the Congress

headquarters in Raipur where she met withsurviving state leaders in small groups. Thosewaiting outside could hear her raised voicethrough the closed door as she gave vent toher agitation and distress. Perhaps the killingswere a sharp reminder of past tragedies in herlife and cut too close to the bone for her tohandle with equanimity. There were many red faces in the official

delegation that went with Prime MinisterManmohan Singh to Japan when a Hyder-abad-based television channel telecast

footage of senior babus having a night out inTokyo with the media contingent. As is thetradition, the external publicity division of theministry of external affairs arranged a dinnercruise for themedia to which the officials ac-companying the PMwere also invited.

So very shamelessIt would have gone down as just another XP

dinner except that the hosts had alsoarranged for live entertainment in the formofa Bollywood dance performance. The dancer,an Indian girl born and brought up in Japan, was full of oomph and her dances provoca-tive. At one point, she almost had a wardrobemalfunction too, after which the entertain-ment was called off. When the delegation returned to their

hotel, they were informed by panicky aidesthat footage of the evening went on air in Hy-derabad with the TV camera panning closelyon the dancer and the officials watching her. There was a huge furore that night. PMOoffi-cials breathed fire at the ministry of externalaffairs which in turn came down heavily onthemedia group. The representative of theTVchannel was taken to task and XP officialsvowed to stop all hospitality for accompany-ing media persons on future trips. The threat was put into action almost im-

mediately. When the delegation landed atBangkok on the way back fromTokyo, mediapersonswere left to fend for themselves with-out the cocktails and dinner usually lavishedon them.Is the Congress trying to get a foothold in

the tightly closed circle that controls Indiancricket? It seems a section close to RahulGandhi was very active during the shenani-gans that ultimately led to BCCI presidentSrinivasan stepping aside for old warhorseJagmohan Dalmiya to stage a comeback. While all interests converged to scuttle NCVPchief Sharad Pawar’s game to oust Srinivasanand regain control of the BCCI, the Congressput in its bid as well through Rajasthancricket association president C.P. Joshi, whois known to be close to the Rahul Gandhicamp. Apparently, Joshi too threw his weightbehind Dalmiya. That was step one. BCCIwatchers are waiting to see what the nextmove of the Congress will be.

Ponder awhile…“Giving thanks never goes out of style.”

Held in contemptIf there is one thing that needs no furtherestablishing, it is the obvious contempt inwhich the authorities and indeed, everyonewith money, muscle or political power, holds the general public of India. In Mumbai, financial capital of the coun-

try, where citizens pay taxes through theirnoses and live in some of the most expen-sive real estate in actual terms in the world, the government does not respond to de-mands for more transparency in land usepolicy. In the BMC, run on revenue raised

through octroi and property taxes, theelected representativeswho are supposed torepresent us, do exactly as they please asthey wring the coffers dry. Witness the waythe road resurfacing contracts are decidedin tenminutes and in the face of strong op-position.Skeletons are tumbling out of the BCCI

with shocking regularity, and in the latestexposes, it is clear that our beloved captainMahendra Singh Dhoni expects us to be-lieve that there is no conflict of interest insigning upwith a sportsmanagement com-pany where he is the highest earner andwhich also manages other cricketers onwhose futures he sits as a selector. He also does not think anyone can join

the dots when it is revealed that he ownedsignificant shares in the same company forthe brief period in March this year.It helps that the former BCCI chief (who

might well come back again, seeing how theBCCI seems to be fronted by a revolvingdoor that lets JagmohanDalmiya in as it letsSrinivasan out), is M S Dhoni’s employer aswell, but we are not supposed to believe thatperhaps this is what ensured he was notsacked after India ‘s defeats by England andAustralia. We are supposed to see nothing, hear nothing, but what is permitted. On Tuesday, in Cardiff for the ICC Cham-

pionsTrophy, winning the shieldmust haveseemed very sweet indeed. One scribeasked him to pose biting it, like Rafael Nadalhas been shot. Dhoni said, “If youwant ten-nis celebrations, go to Wimbledon. We dothings our way.”One thing is for sure, “Our” does not in-

clude the Indian public. Cricket “royalty”has been shown time and again to do things“their” way. Cricket has long been reducedin this country to nautanki. Perhaps it istime to cut these nautanks down to size, andgive them back a little of the contempt inwhich they seem to hold the ticket-buying,TRP creating public.

Brothers, last week we discussed Arjuna’sstate of despondency (vishad). When-

ever there is Arjuna-like honesty, straight-forwardness and total surrender to God,even a state of despondency attains thecharacter of yoga. It is the churning of heartwhich brings this about. The First Chapterof the Gita has been called Arjuna-vishad-yoga. I prefer to call it simply Vishad-yoga,as Arjuna provided only an occasion for thediscourse. We see that the Lord stands to redeem us

all, ignorant creatures aswe are, held captiveby the bonds of this-worldliness. Similarly, although Arjuna provided an immediatecause for the overflowing of the Lord’s com-passion in the form of the Gita, it is really in-tended for all of us. That is why the generalterm vishad-yoga is more befitting for theGita’s First Chapter. Beginning from thisvishad-yoga the Gita’s teaching keeps ongrowing like amagnificent tree, finally bear-ing the fruit of prasad-yoga (God’s grace) in

the concluding Chapter. Godwilling, we toowould reach that destination during theterm of our imprisonment. The Gita’s teaching begins from the Sec-

ond Chapter. At the very outset, the Lordenunciates the cardinal principles of life. The idea is that once the fundamental prin-ciples, which are to form the foundation oflife, are well-grasped, the way ahead wouldbe clear. Inmy view, the term sankhya-bud-

dhi in the Second Chapter stands for thebasic principles of life. The Gita has a penchant for using old

philosophical terms in new senses. Graftingnew meanings on to old terms is a non-vio-lent process of bringing about revolution inthinking.Vyasa is adept in this process. This isthe secret of the great potency and strengthof the language of theGita and its ever-fresh-ness and vitality. Different thinkers couldtherefore read different meanings in the

terms used by it in the light of their experi-ences and according to their needs. In myview, all those interpretations could be takenas valid from their respective standpoints andyet we can have a different interpretation ofour ownwithout ruling out any of them. There is a beautiful story in anUpanishad

which is worth recounting here. Once gods, demons and human beings went to Prajap-ati (the Creator) for advice; Prajapati gave allof them only one word of advice: the singlesyllable (da). The gods said, “We are given topassions and sensual pleasures. So, Prajap-ati has advised us ‘daman’ (subduing andconquering them).”The demons said, ‘‘we are given to anger

and cruelty. So, Prajapati has advised us tocultivate ‘daya’ (compassion).” The humanbeings said, “We are greedy and are alwayshankering after possessions. So, Prajapatihas advised us to practise ‘dan’ (charity andsharing).” Prajapati approved all these inter-pretations, as all of themhad arrived at theirinterpretations through their own experi-ences. We should bear in mind this storywhile interpreting the Gita’s terminology.

R.I.P. Rituparno GhoshIWAS profoundly saddened to learnabout the sudden demise of ac-claimed filmmaker RituparnoGhosh, who passed away in Kolkatarecently. An era of sensitive, braveand internationally relevant cinemacomes to an end. He was a youngfilmmaker who took on the mantleof keeping the legacy of the Bengalschool of filmmaking going. He re-ceived several awards, his filmsbagged 12National awards between1997 to 2003. He made films like‘Dahan’, ‘Bariwali’, ‘Asukh’, ‘Utsab’,‘Shubho’ etc. With his death, not

only has cinema been robbed ofone of its finest talent, but the strug-gle for gender identity politics toohas lost one of its most powerfuland much loved voices and no onecan take away his contribution.Thisis certainly a very sad and tragicmoment for his family, film indus-try and entire Bengal. May his soulrest in peace!

THE ‘fixing’ saga continues in In-dian cricket and the emergencyBCCI meeting was pre-orches-trated and an eyewash to fool thepublic that everything is fine as faras cricket administration is con-cerned. Jagmohan Dalmiya’s ele-vation as stop-gap in charge ofBoard duties is ridiculous as N.Srinivasan would now run theshow at BCCI through a ‘remotecontrol’ as he has only steppedaside and not resigned from thepost. Dissenting voices like thoseof Ajay Shirke, Sanjay Jagdale,Bindra have been silencedthrough majority vote as politicsis now being played in the corri-dors of BCCI which would destroyIndian cricket in the long run.BCCI has reduced themselves to aprivate money minting clubwhose strings are in the hands ofpoliticians and businessmen andcricketers are treated like dogsthat have to obey the orders oftheir masters.

—S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

APROPOS ‘Will this head roll?’(ADC, May 25), the IPL 6 is blownwith this revelation that it is notonly the tainted trio (the three ar-rested cricketers) but there aremany ‘off the field’ culprits in-volved thereby, no lesser than theson-in-law (read low) of the BCCIboss Srinivasan, caught red-handed.With every day passingeach day we observe a new revela-tion involving the Bollywood per-sonnel, the umpire and now theunderworld. A section of themedia revealed that the huge bet-ting money is being conduited tothe terror outfits in Pakistan andto the Middle East. It is high timethat the Govt of India should in-tervene and find the culprits as itis causing national security con-cern. If the allegation of transferof this illegally generated money(out of betting) by the bookies tothe underworld is proved to betrue, then this cricket leagueshould be banned for ever.

—Bikram Banerjea,Mumbai

BCCI has inflicted an body blowto the cause of cricket by lettingSrinivasan to remain Presidentand by making Mr. Dalmia, asham working President. BCCIshould have guts to oust Srini-vasan if he was adamant aboutnot vacating the chair of his ownvolition. With such timid action, probe into the whole murky scan-dal of spot fixing will not make

any conclusive headway. Srini-vasan’s hand picked nominee Mr.Dalmia will not be able to turn ta-bles on his master when thethings will come to crunch. It’ssurprising how come the majorityof BCCI members allowed Srini toplay his dirty game and get awaywith. Surely the whole drama hasonly one winner i.e. Srinivasanwhich essentially means that In-dian cricket shall be a ‘puppet’ inhis hands. A very sad day for In-dian cricket.

—Ashok Goswami,Mumbai

AND so, true to expectations, theBig Boss of the BCCI, N. Srini-vasan, has proven to be a toughernut to crack than evenYeddiu-rappa and has craftily taken thewhole working committee for aride, having the last laugh in thebargain— he refused to ‘stepdown’ and has only‘stepped aside’, stillclaiming, with hisusual nonchalance, to hold thereins of the Board in his hands. Hehas only allowed a former presi-dent with a tainted past to run hisoffice until the probe that he hasordered with his ownmen in thepanel—and not the criminal in-vestigation of the Mumbai Po-lice—is over, with the proviso thathe will be reinstated if nothing isfound against him. For this un-savoury sequel to the high-voltagedrama, only the disinterestedhandling of the matter by themembers of the working commit-tee, more like how the Delhi Po-lice treat rape cases, has to beblamed. The emergency meetingshould have been requisitioned bya fewmembers and a new chair-man to preside over the meetingshould have been elected fromamong those present.

—Dr.V. Subramanyan, Thane

THE recent meeting of BCCI onthe question of resignation of ShriN. Srinivasan who was adamantnot to resign, arrived at a solution, seemingly not logical though. What actually emerged and howthe BCCI would now function isnot clear as Shri. N. Srinivasan issaid to have merely stepped asideand not actually resigned and ShriDalmiya is only an interim presi-dent. Shri Srinivasan is advisednot to discharge the functions ofthe president and hence it is notclear as to how the interim presi-dent can discharge the importantfunctions. The situation is com-

pounding and confusing withoutany sign of a solution in keepingwith the good traditions.

—T.M.Uday Shankar,Mumbai

AFTER all the hype, hoopla andhysteria about IPL 6 match-fixingand spot-fixing, Srinivasan wasmade a scapegoat as his son-in-law was cynosure of all the actionfrom the CSK side. Now every-thing is over and we think of edu-cating players to tacklecorruption. As in the past, BCCIjust brushes aside charges and saythat they do not have resources totackle bookies. Access to the play-ers was not monitored all along, giving scope to spot-fixing. Play-ers were approached by bookiesand the Board does not knowwhat is going on under theirnoses. Appointing an anti-corrup-tion officer and a security officer

to monitor the movement of play-ers is just an eye wash. Srinivasanas the chief should have cau-tioned his son-in-law and the IPLchief in spot fixing episodes. It’stime to brush aside differences, make more stringent laws andclean cricket.

—C.K. Ramanathan, Ghaziabad

ALL along we heard of playersplaying according to the strategydesigned by the coach, captainand the teammanagement. But inIPL 6 everything was pre-planned.From the first ball bowled by BretLee in IPL 6, in which UnmuktChand got bowled, to the last ballin the final at Eden Garden’sKolkata all the matches and all theballs were fixed to get maximumout of the ‘Indian Pullout League’.The writing is on the wall. Theway Kieron Pollard dropped threecatches of consecutive balls andthe Chennai Super Kings getting

bowled out for 79, are all part ofmatch fixing. Over and abovethere was spot-fixing as well. Inthe final, both Hussey and Rainaperished early to show that thematch was going very tough. Inthe end, Dhoni was allowed to hitout to show that he was fightingup to the end. Everything was abig drama on the field in front ofpaid spectators. Cricket fans, whohave not witnessed a single matchin this edition of IPL are the luckyones.

—Anandambal Subbu, Seawood

INDIAN Cricket is in doldrums. From the captain to teamman-agement and the BCCI Presidentall are having conflict of interestand no one to check such types ofabrasions. Is there a conflict of in-terest betweenM.S. Dhoni thebusinessman andM.S. Dhoni the

Indian cricket captain? Cricket in-vestigations reveal that a 15 percent stake bought by Dhoni earlierthis year in the sports marketingfirm that manages him hasspawned a tangled web of busi-ness associations, raising issues ofpropriety and conflict of interestin at least two situations. Thisputs Dhoni in the conflicting posi-tion where he has a 15 per centshare of the profits earned byRhiti Sports frommanaging thesefour players, even as he opines orvotes on them in team selectionmeetings as the Indian captain. There is definitely a conflict of in-terest in this case.

— Jayanthy S.Maniam, Sion

SO ‘God No 10’ has retired fromthe IPL. That’s similar to how he‘retired’ from ODIs. If you want toretire you should have thecourage to announce it before-hand. One would have thought

that Tendulkar would have an-nounced his retirement fromODIs soon after India won theWorld Cup. But that did not hap-pen and he had to go without afarewell match in front of specta-tors. Now he has announced IPLretirement—would he have goneif Mumbai had NOT won? That’sthe million dollar question. AndIPL 6: Mumbai did not win it,Chennai lost it, whether deliber-ately or not, you decide. AndMumbai won without Tendulkarin the last four matches. AndPonting, the original captain vir-tually not playing any match.

—T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivli

THE undesired outcome of the re-cent IPL cricket matches clearlyindicate that this ‘Gentlemen’sgame’ has now become the pot-hole of the criminals with the ob-vious, but hidden involvement ofthe politicians (read vested inter-ests). Otherwise, how can a re-sponsible leader of the nation likethe PrimeMinister ManmohanSingh say that the probe is goingon, hence he can’t comment uponthis menace? On the other hand, the people are also surprised tonote since long that in any cricketmatch, whenever Sachin Ten-dulkar makes a century or anyother ‘historic’ record, that partic-ular match is indiscriminatelylost. Why is it so? People don’twant any reply of this genuine, cu-rious query from any politician, because nobody trusts them anylonger.

—Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

CAN anybody guess what is themost “immoral” act in our coun-try...you probably have guessed itwrong. No, it’s not cheating orrape, neither is it robbery or mur-der; it’s actually asking someoneto step down on “moral” grounds. When a Coalgate cannot make aPM budge from his seat nor doesa CM resign after humanmas-sacre in his state how can you askothers to leave the comforts andstep down from their highpedestal. We should not feelashamed to accept (and thesooner we accept the better it isfor we may then try to correct)that we just don’t breath pollutionbut also eat and drink corruption, making us thoroughly immune toall the wrongs happening aroundus. If BCCI president is to stepdown then all those who “al-lowed” him to own a franchisee inthe IPL in 2008 also should stepdown...not on moral grounds butas a courtesy to the “request” ofthis cricket loving nation.

ThoughArts has retained its uniqueness andflavour amongst the student communityand educators, very often the stream come

under a lot of misapprehension. Many studentsthus opt for arts as a last resort choice rather

than prefer to take it up as a priority.According to Prof. Lakshmi

Department English, SIES College of Arts,Science and Commerce this has become a hugeproblem for the educational field. She explains,“As a course, arts and humanities have becomequite under-valued. Some of the schoolsoffering A Levels inLeicester are theLeicester High School forGirls, English MartyrsCatholic School, theLeicestershire MontessoriPreparatory School, theUppingham School andthe Ashby School. All of

these schools follow the A-Levels. TheUppingham School has the option of beinga boarding school while the rest are dayschools. The standard requirements forgaining entry into these schools are evalu-ation of the GCSE grades, entrance exami-nations and eventually the entrance inter-view. The requirements would vary fromschool to school. In addition, on an average the annual day

school fees are approximately £21,000 and£31,000 for the boarding school. If yourdaughter is involved in extracurricular activi-ties, she could apply directly for scholarships.

and analyses. It is thus a highly challeng-ing field that tests one’s analytical skillsrather than test one’s memory as is other-wise believed.”Arts is therefore well-suited to those

who have an interest in reading, in under-standing the minutiae of a subjectthrough extensive researching and whohave a flair for English, or any other lan-guage for that matter. “I was always goodat languages in school, especially English. It was only natural that I decided then totake up English as a primary subject ofchoice right from the beginning. My pas-sion and understanding of the subjectonly grew as the college years went by.”states Yashaswini Iyer, a pre-primaryteacher.For those students genuinely interested

in scoping out the field, educational andcareer choices are innumerable. Studentswanting to get into PR, advertising, jour-nalism, communication, teaching, law, civil services, business management andeven researching can think of taking uparts as their primary educational speciali-sation background. Prof. Muthukumarsums it up by saying, “Arts and humanitiesoffer arrays of educational and careerchoices for those wanting to exploreavenues away from the generally preva-lent rat race.”Thesemyriad educational optionswith-

in the field however aren’t just confined tothe English medium. The reach of thestream is quite extensive reaching out tovarious regional languages which makehumanities and arts more relatable tothose not traditionally from an Englishspeaking background. In spite of theseopportunities available for the students

to consider, there are however severalproblems that plague the field as it isoffered to the student communities.Yashaswini states that though educa-tional institutes are doing their best forstudents, at times, conflicts arise

because of differences between subjectchoices available and subject choicesdesired by the students. She states, “Therequirement to choose between certaingroups of subjects always given in sets ofthree rather than choose simply one sub-ject of one’s choice for the entire dura-tion of the academic course is quite dis-appointing sometimes. It also puts pres-sure on the students to do well in theother subjects, which may or may not beto the liking of the student. At times, itcould also affect the student’s perform-ance in his subject of choice negatively. The educational varsities thus need toconsider the students’ dilemma in suchscenarios and need to address the situa-tion to the best that they can.”However despite these slight misgiv-

ings, there is no denying that arts andhumanities form the crux of various pre-mium educational and career spectrums. The emergence of never-seen beforeavenues within the field has provided artswith the thrust and momentum that itrightfully deserves.

No love for the arts?

Prof. Marcellus D’Souza“The perception that arts is a ‘mugging’stream or that the subjects within it are‘boring’ has gone out of the window. Thestream has broken the shackles of being a‘girls only’ stream or being a stream for‘those with low or less marks.’ Many mentake up arts to pursue a degree and careerin law, journalism and corporate training toname a few.”

Nishtha Tiwari, Career Counsellor“Times have changed. Dynamic changes incareer options and growth in the fieldaltogether have transformed arts into amulti-lane highway rather than a single laneroad as it was perceived to be before.”

Dear Gayatri,I am very interested in becoming an artist, but I come from a very conservative family. My father expects me to take up the familybusiness or do something ‘respectable’ likebe a doctor. I have no aptitude for that kind

family first and try and garner some con-sensus before speaking to the rest at a go.Present them with a road map to your futureas an artist and what you intend to do. Giveyourself a time frame where you can seeyourself deliver the goods. Your fatherwants you to pick a career which will give

you stability, but you ought to tell him thatbeing an artist can also produce the desiredresults monetarily . Also, assert clearly whatyour strengths and weaknesses are. If youcan, create a career path without any hin-drances [at least on your roadmap] then Isee no reason for your parents displayingany sort of temper.

How do I do that withoutoffending her?If she has any siblings, speak to them aboutwhether they have observed a similarbehavior. Try and find out whether there areany domesticated problems or issues in herfamily, which has brought a change in herbehavior. Also, confront her parents andrequest them to take cognizance of her pres-ent state. Even seeking an appointment witha psychologist is advisable.

« HAPPENING SHAPPENING

Viva Group of Institutions is Microsoft India’s first platinum Ed-vantage campus

PLAY IN THE RAIN: Your parents and teachers mayhate it, but they’re old and theycan’t help being more cynical thanyou. This monsoon season makesure you make one attempt tosplash around in the rain. If youhave dogs, take them along. It’sprobably the most fun you’ll havefor a while.

KEEP HEALTHY:Even though this weather maymake you want to give up any sortof work or study, it’s important notto overdo exposing yourself to therain. Also avoid roadside food likepani puri or anything water based.Remember you want to enjoy thisseason not spend it in the agony ofpneumonia.

HOT DRINKS :The summer’s gone and so have allthe fruity iced drinks and nimbupaanis you’re so bored of. Nothingcomplements the monsoon morethan a hot drink. So this is yourchance to tank up on all the hotchocolate and coffee you like. Theupside to it? It lowers your chancesof catching a dreadful cold.

BUNK CLASS :Do you live a considerable dis-tance away from school or college? This would be the perfect time toplay hookey! Your teacher willassume you couldn’t make itbecause of the flooded roads andgenerally dangerous road travelexpected during this season. So dobunk class at least once, just forthe sake of it.

GET INSPIRED :The downside of this season isthat it often hinders you fromsocializing and going out. Take itpositively and sit down to dosomething creative. Sit near yourbedroom window and just watchthe pitter-patter. If it doesn’tinspire you to sing, write or evenpaint, you’ll always remember it astime well-spent.

Iam a commerce graduate from Mithibai College. Igraduated in 2006 and I cherish my college days.I liked my college very much. It was a very nice,

cool college. We had a lovely canteen, with outletslike CD inside and Pizza Hut. It was ahappening place. I had great fun as acollege student. Mithibhai College hasa unique and very cosmopolitan feel about it.

My first day of college was very bad. I was not fromMumbai so I felt lost and was trying to figure outthings. I was excited but sad also. I experiencedmixed feelings as I had left my home town and at thesame town was excited about being in Mumbai. Itook time to adjust. I had been brought up in Navsarinear Surat. Mumbai was an entirely different city forme.

I was ragged, not on the first day but on the secondday. I looked like a newcomer. I was in the canteen, some three seniors came in and told me they werenewbies as well, and so we could go to class togeth-er.When I entered the class I realised that I was in thewrong place and that the guys who told me to tag

along were my seniors and had taken me for a ride.My professors were very strict especially my

accounts professor; he was extremely strict and healways complained that I never attend the first lec-

ture and I use to tell him that I can’t getup in the morning. Once I tried, leftearly but went to sleep in the train and

subsequently got late. So I told the sir that may be Iwas not meant to attend the first lecture. I travelled tocollege by train and bus.

I was bad at studies. I used to pass somehow withgrace marks. I was a lot into extra-curricular activities and sports.

College life was a struggle andwith a little bit of responsibility. Ialso did a course in diamond assort-ing. I got an offer as a manager in ashowroom in Dubai when I had beenthere to meet my relatives. I justtried and got it; it was a big packagebut I did not take up the job as I don’tlike to be away from my parents.

Yes, we had our favourite eating, meeting, andsocialising places.

In college, everyone was affluent. I had a simplegroup, we use to go home after lectures and I used tohang out with my building friends too. I use to spenda lot of time at pool and snooker parlours. I was verygood at it and won many tournaments too. I used toeat vada pao instead of burgers as vada Pao was theonly thing I could afford at that time.

My friends were my kind of people… very content, simple and sweet. It was a group of ten students. Wehad a good time. We will cherish the memories ofthose days forever.

I must tell you about a prank I played. I used to gofor dance classes. It was April Fool day. I had myclasses from 6.00 to 7.30, I asked some of my friendsto play the role of a police man and scare my teacher.I told them to come to class and ask what is going onand behave little rudely and ask questions. I thenwent to talk to them and they slapped me. Themoment they slapped me, my teacher was veryscared and was almost on the verge of crying. Then I

told her it was an April Fool joke.Another anecdote I present was when I was attend-

ing lectures. There was a new girl in the group but Ididn’t talk to her much. She was waiting down as shewas late for the lectures. I came down as I was thrownout of the lectures for not having a book. There weretwo guys on a bike irritating her, I saw her and said‘hi’, she came and stood behind me since they wereasking her weird questions and even pushed me. Iwas a very short tempered guy. I just kicked their bikeand tore their clothes. I had a lot of support from myteachers and classmates. I became a hero.

Education is important. In the beginning it boost-ed me. I knew if I did not make it as an actor, I had aneducation qualification to back me up and could optfor another career if this one did not work. I havelearnt diamond assorting and jewellery designing.Pretensions do not work. Lies do not help in life.Accept failures and success with a smile. It is part andparcel of your life. No one is perfect.

As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

To join a reputed medical college in India, onmerit, is not easy. One must get over 90 per centmarks in class XII and also do well in the com-

petitive test! Otherwise, the parents are obliged tofork out a donation of Rs.15 lakhs or more plus payannual tuition fee of Rs.4 to 5 lakhs. The total expenseof studying MBBS at a private medical universityworks out to over Rs.40 lakhs, while the quality ofeducation is not on par. However, here is an attractivealternative: Study for MBBS at Tianjin MedicalUniversity in China.

The city of Tianjin where Tianjin MedicalUniversity (TMU) is located is the third largest city inChina. Located 120 km form Beijing; Tianjin is a fullydeveloped metropolis, having a number of industriesapart from being a major trading centre. It has excel-lent communication facilities as well as infrastruc-ture.

TMU opened in 1951 and is the first educationalinstitution of medical science of medical science inChina. It is also the nation’s major bio medicalresearch and clinical centre which provides highlyspecialized education in medicine & related disci-plines.

TMU has a staff of over 10,000 including over 280professors and 680 assistant professors. Further,TMU has a tie up with 40 well known foreign univer-sities. TMU is recognised by the WHO as well as theMCI.

Hostel accommodation at TMUHostel facility is available at TMU premises on a twinbed sharing basis while each rooms isequipped with a telephone, a TV set &has hot/cold water round the clock. Ifthey choose, overseas students can stay in apart-ments outside the campus.

Food in TMUA student can eat in the university canteen. All typesof continental food, both vegetarian & non vegetari-an, is served at TMU. Since generally majority of thestudents are Indians, the canteen also offers Indian

food, both vegetarian as well as non vegetarian Foodprices in China are low and many students eat off thecampus.

Advantages compared to studying for MBBS inRussiaThe main advantages are listed below:

A MBBs course at TMU takes only 5 yearswhile in Russia it takes 6 years. Therefore, a stu-dent saves 1 year.

The MBBS programmein Russia will cost aboutRs. 2 lacs less but the

quality of education imparted in Russiais inferior compared to China

The climate in Russia is quite cold. TMUis 140 km south of Bejing & the climate at TMUis easier to bear for an Indian student.

Processing TimeThe course begins in September 15. The documents

are processed by prin-cipals within sevendays. However, moststudents wish to secure

an Education Loanwhich takes 6 to 8 weeks.

Hence a student should applyas early as possible.

Highly satisfied alumniOver 2,500 Indian students have passed out with a

MBBS from China. Most of them are practic-ing as doctors in different parts of India

while a few have completed MS pro-gramme in India

Criterion for applicantsA student who applies for a MBBSto TU should satisfy the followingrequirement:

Pass 12th std examination(PCB) with at least 50% marksand have a valid passport

Medical Council of India (MCI)registration

An Indian student, whopasses a MBBS degree

from an overseas uni-versity, must pass an

examination con-ducted by theMCI and com-plete internshipof one yearbefore he/she can

practice as a doc-tor in India. The MCI examina-

tion is conducted inDelhi every six months.

MBBS candidates prefer to joina coaching class for this examina-

tion which are conducted in Delhi. Thecoaching class fee is Rs 5,000/month. Normally

two months coaching is adequate i.e. the coachingcost would be Rs.10,000.

About 60 per cent of Indian students who passedout with a Chinese MBBS, have cleared the MCIexamination in the first attempt.

After passing the MCI examination, it is mandatoryfor the doctor to complete one year internship inIndia.

Should the MBBS student enrol for an apprentice-ship in Delhi, the MCI does not levy any charge. However, for doctors who complete the internship ina city other than Delhi, such individuals have to paythe MCI a fee of Rs.1 lakh prior to commencing theapprenticeship.

« GADGET OF THE WEEK

Today innovative designs areseen as giving an edge to theowner. The unique finishing

and ‘one of a kind’ tag that islabeled onto commodities acrossthe market gives the consumer thegratification of being a class apartfrom the herd. Young designers arealso making products and com-modities that are more user–friendly, simplistic and attractive. They are the masterminds behindthe beautification of our consumerworld who redesign and add twiststo products and essential com-modities which have been a part ofhuman life since times immemori-al to make them suit the require-ments of the time and agewe live inlike, ‘eco-friendly refrigerators’, ‘thesolar car’ etc.

What led to the Inception of theKyoorius Awards for StudentDesigners being conceptualized? The Kyoorius Awards for studentscame from a simple idea - to show-case what real talent can do for areal client with a real world brief.Students rarely have the chance towork and contribute to projects atlarge studios straight out of college.Kyoorius Awards provides them aplatform to really exercise their cre-ative muscle and be recognized fortheir thinking and approach - whilebeing judged on the same platformas their peers - regardless of whichcollege they come from.

Do tell us about the various cate-gories that are being awarded ?This year we have nine categoriesfor professionals - Identity,Packaging, Communication,Digital, Space, Books, Editorial,Craft and Design for Good. And sixfor students - Identity, Packaging,Book, Typography, Illustration andan Open Brief.

What do you think of talent seenin the field of design today andthe different innovations youhave noticed?Design and creative practice isquickly becoming less of a bohemi-an career choice in India. Both stu-dents and their parents acrossIndia are realizing that design andcommunication is a unique andprogressive career choice. We areseeing a significant rise in designprofessionals from Tier 2 and 3cities in India and this is really fan-

tastic. It’s a new perspective and isgiving rise to a truly Indian designsensibility and is not just borrow-ing from the west.

Design is a part of every industrybecause presentation and inno-vation is of utmost importance, what do you see is the future ofdesign in Indian and internation-ally?One big change is in the perceptionof what design can do - design isnot art and therefore is not justabout presentation. Design is func-tion and businesses in India arerealizing the value creative profes-sionals bring to the table. Design isreally too broad a heading to definethe many things designers do.Creatively is how designersapproach their work - and in think-ing outside the Excel sheet andPowerpoint, designers are able todevelop solutions right from the

way brands communicate, to theway they package products, to theway they interact with audiencesand even in some cases they waythey do business. Design is aboutbeing a strategic tool and not justaesthetics.

Tell us about the winners of theawards and what made theirwork stand out.Firstly, I would like to mention thatthe awards and jury session is yetto be held. But to answer this in adifferent way —-Together with D&AD, a specialistjury panel has been selected com-prising some of the best and mostinspirational creative professionalsfrom around the world. All jurymembers will gather inMumbai forthe jury session – to review, discussand select the best of the best overthree intensive days. All voting isprivate, never by a show of hands.

During the judging process thejury members will base their deci-sion on three criteria, reviewing ifthe entry is an original and inspir-ing idea, well executed and finally ifit is relevant to its context. Theymay also debate prior to choosingthe final award.

How well equipped are the designinstitutes of India to train thefuture generation in design, alsowhat suggestions would you giveto the design Institutes toimprove their training?Design institutes in India havebeen evolving, some more rapidlythan others. But most have notbeen able to keep pace with thechange that the industry itself hasundergone. Curriculums and syl-labuses do need to evolve but theyneed to involve the real world in amore meaningful way. The MBAmodel is a great example of howthe institute can bring in real worldinfluence both from clients andprofessionals alike. But the respon-sibility does not lie solely with theinstitute. Alumni really need to getinvolved and give back to schoolsand help nurture future talent.

What is the next step for theKyoorius Awards for StudentDesigners next year? Any futureinitiatives?Apart from the many initiativesthat Kyoorius is building for thecommunity as a whole, we are real-ly excited about our efforts with thestudent community. In the nextyear, we will be launching an initia-tive called the Kyoorius Grant - thiswill be a fund that Kyoorius will setup. Students with great projectideas that normally never see thelight of day because of the lack offunding can now submit that ideato Kyoorius.

A jury will narrow down to thebest 10 potential ideas to thenbecome a project will then sanc-tion the Kyoorius Grant. Typicallythis will form a part of the StudentDiploma Project – but we wantdeserving students to work on aproject that they have ideated.

Advice for students who wish topursue a career in design? That you should work hard and becommitted. But with design, I’d saywork smart, listen, see the worldaround you, don’t be overzealousand stay adventurous and curious.

For the love of DesignWith the advent of multinational companies trying to find a foothold in Indian markets and Indiancompanies wanting to explore international avenues, design and originality in innovation has become theneed of the hour. This year Kyoorius has widened their umbrella of design awards to accommodate studentsof design as well. Srishti Jain, talks to Mr. Rajesh Kejriwal, Founder CEO, Kyoorius to discuss the motive ofintroducing these awards and the future of Indian design as he sees it.

TheKyoto Protocol will give a boost torenewable green energy supply sys-tems as more than 140 countries

have committed to move beyond fossilfuels. This means more job opportunitiesand an ideal option for students to pursuetheir graduation or PG.The energy sector does play a powerful

role in the growth of any nation. Butunfortunately the availability of variousenergy resources has been deterioratingand the energy crisis has forced a wholelot of corporates and politicians to con-serve existing energy resources and alsodevelop alternate sources. This is whererenewable energy and proper energymanagement will be an excellent career.Since the 80s many have been advocat-

ing green technologies such as solar sys-tems, wind turbines and eco-buildingsbut have had a hard time. But all this willchange this century as green power willbecome the buzz word.Today issues related to climate change

and the fast declining global oil reserveshave made corporates, politicians and thegeneral public more aware. The demandfor skilled personnel in the renewableenergy industries is growing rapidly, moreso abroad andmany online job portals areoffering a platform to recruit such indus-try professionals. So what’s renewable energy? As per the

International Energy Agency, ‘Renewable

energy is derived from natural processesthat are replenished constantly. In its vari-ous forms, it derives directly from the sun,or from heat generated deep within theearth. Included in the definition is elec-tricity and heat generated from solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, biomass, geot-hermal resources and biofuels and hydro-gen derived from renewable resources.’Thus renewable energy is energy thatcomes from resources which are continu-ally replenished such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat.According to a 2011 projection by theInternational Energy Agency, solar powergenerators may produce most of theworld’s electricity within 50 years. Todayrenewable energy provides 19% of elec-tricity generation worldwide.Mainstream renewable technologies are

- Wind power, Hydropower, Solar energy,Biomass, Biofuel, Geothermal energy andOceanogenic Power. Renewable energyreplaces conventional fuels in four dis-tinct areas: electricity generation, hotwater/space heating, motor fuels, andrural (off-grid) energy services. In India the Ministry of New and

Renewable Energy and the Bureau ofEnergy Efficiency are taking adequatesteps to develop economically viablerenewable energy and energy efficient sys-tems. Ministry of New and RenewableEnergy has set up four specialized centres

on solar energy, wind energy, bio-energyand hydro-energy. There are plenty ofopportunities in renewable energy andenergy efficiency sectors across the coun-try.You could be a part of the green energy

revolution - working towards the goals of asustainable future as well as earning well. With a few years experience you canbecome an entrepreneur/ self-employed.There are numerous Colleges/

I think the main issue is a lackof awareness. If people wereproperly educated on the men-tal state of mind that leads peo-ple to committing suicide, wewould have better access to sui-cide hotlines and other forms oftherapy. I think saying that star-lets committing suicide willencourage young people to

commit suicide is like saying starlets getting afever will encourage young people to get a fever. Inmost cases, when someone has reached a mentalstate where they are considering taking their ownlives, it’s an illness, not a self-aware decision.

—Valmik Kumar,BA student

The city is very demanding. Thework is too demanding andtakes a toll on relationships.Although it is too premature tocomment on her death, it is sadto see an aspiring actress whotasted success with her movies, slip in to a fall like this.Previously, also there were inci-dents of actors falling prey to

the last option. I really doubt what can be the roleof the government, but if anything can be done, itis for the family to do so, as they are your supportsystem. People need to share things with theirfamily and friends so people can help them comeout of their depression.

—Narender Yadav,Marketing Manager

The government publicizescounseling centres for studentswho are in the SSC and HSC.Recently, we have seen thatmany students have been usingcounseling centres which hasrisen in number. The state gov-ernment should take a cue fromsuch projects to create moreawareness. But eventually, its in

the hands of such people who are wasting theirlives by committing suicide. Celebrities who arerole models can set a wrong precedent for new-comers in the industry.

—Hitesh Motwani,Media Relations Manager

She was suppressionpersonified. The confines of her mind;Still for ages.Too distinct, her voice;Silent for eons.

Desiccated and dissipated,The eyes wandered through spaces,Beyond those iron grills.A pensive yearning, a desire somusing, they embodied. The world of her wishes, there once had been,Vanished, void and unadorned,Strange it seems.

Yet the confines of her mind,So replete with memories,Denial is the only justification,To the past it gives.

Drifting beyond the colourless horizon,The disguised feelings, marched by her heavy eyelids.Days melted gloriously,Remembering those unforgettable evening treats.Anthems of days gone by,Are the songs she shuts out, now.Wishes upon those fire-lit stars,Across the Milky Way...Transcended time, escorting her to a land too far.

The rains lashed across the iron bars,The spell it broke;Filmy they have rendered those vibrant eyes...On the other side of the steel clad rods.

With that crisp repartee, it all fell apart. Her present, confined.A hope burnt bright, extinguished sadly. The canvas she painted faded painfully. It silenced her, indefinitely.Muffled her, perpetually.

And, still as ever,Life moved on and will move on.

Fashion. Is it a style?A trend? What is itexactly? As time passes we hap-pen to follow everylikely trend that has ledus one step ahead.

Some of us may have had pleasant expe-riences and an unusual few the contrary.Going by today’s generation, if the socialcircle you deal with is cool, then you arecool. A mind with an open thought likethis seems to have been officially follow-ing the newest mantra in youngsterswhich is ‘Trends’!

Following trends is in, be it in fashionor business. But the few who have beensuccessful to make their own style a trendhave made it big. Every individual’s style

is trendy in its own way. Although itmakes a mark only if carried with confi-dence and elegance. Make your appear-ance out of yourself and not a replica ofan icon. Most of us just follow thingsbecause it’s in trend — for instance Appleiphones, hair colour or Lee Cooper Tee’s.It’s us who make such stuff trendy by cre-ating the required hype. It’s the style thatmatters and not the brand.

Being Fashionable Is Cool,Hottest Chicks Have Made The Rule!!!Fashion refers to being with the current

trend but not imitating and looking alike. It is to experiment and make it lookequivalent to the fashion fiesta. I havecome across people, who according tome have been adding on to fashion andplaying their part in initiating new trends. What the society needs today are trend-setters and not trend followers…so are weready for it, youngistan?

BUSINESS

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:On Japanese candlestick patterns the index hasformed a small black body candle with a long uppertail. A long upper tail indicates that the Bulls con-trolled part of the session but lost control by the endand the Bears made an impressive comeback. As suchit indicates that the index was facing some sellingpressure at higher levels. This candle also indicatesthe indecisiveness amongst investors. The next can-dle formation will confirm whether the bias is towardsthe buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is below the 5, 15 and 25 day’smoving averages, and all the three moving averagesare declining. Further, the velocity parameters too arenegatively trended. Both these indicate a negative biasand the possibility of a further decline unfolding. In-vestors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Nirmal Bang calls a ‘Buy’ on MunjalShowaCMP: Rs. 63 Target Rs. 86

Munjal Showa Q4FY13 results witnessed an improvement on sequentialbasis with sales growing 1.7% QoQ and EBITDA margins improving to 8.2% vs6.5% in Q3FY13. Lower interest expenses and lower tax rate continued toaid bottom line performance.

The overall slowdown in the auto environment has led to a weak perform-ance on the revenue front for the company. Going forward, overall environ-ment is expected to be slightly better beginning from H2FY13 andmanagement expects volume growth of around 8-9% in FY14E. Operationalperformance of has improved resulting from control over raw material costand benefit on the forex side. Lower tax rates have also enabled the com-pany to post a better show on the net level which we believe will continuegoing forward as well. Moreover, diversification to other OEMs, low gearingratio, superior return ratios, stable margins, healthy dividend yield and sup-port from the promoter group continues to be the key positives for the com-pany.

At CMP, the stock is trading at P/E of 3.35x FY14E earnings and 0.71xFY14E P/BV with an EV/EBITDA 1.86x on FY14E respectively. We expect RoEof 23.0% for FY14E. We maintain our BUY rating on the stock with a targetprice of Rs 86.

Its utility vehicle market share is down from 55.6% in FY12 to 47.7% inFY13.

View and valuation: We remain positive on M&M as it continues to post ro-bust growth. The newly launched Quanto is also gaining momentum. Macroheadwinds may affect the demand in the tractor segment. However, the man-agement mentioned that they are seeing positive sentiments and the indus-try may grow beyond the guidance of 6-8% in FY14. Currently, we estimatetractor sales to grow at a CAGR of ~7% during FY13-15.

The management mentioned that although they are not looking at any newbrand launch in FY14 in the auto segment, the refreshes will continue to hap-pen. Also, three new brands will be launched in FY15. A new brand will belaunched in tractor segment in FY14. We expect its revenue to grow at a CAGRof ~12% during FY13-15 and EBIDTA to grow at ~14%. Biz Climate Improves In MayBusiness climate in the country improved last month buoyed by risingoutput of intermediate goods as well as tourist earnings and thegovernment’s reform initiatives, according to a report. The ‘BluFin BusinessCycle Indicator (BCI)’, which reflects various macroeconomic trends on amonthly basis, stood at 166.3 points in May, 5.8% higher compared to thesame month last year, suggesting that the Indian economy is growing at afaster rate than the previous year. The year-on-year growth rate noted inthe previous month was at 5.1%. Historically, the BCI has grown by anaverage of seven per cent year-on-year, financial information providerBluFin said. Moreover, BCI has been indicating a reversal in the economicslowdown since July 2012 and expects that Indian economy would grow at5.3% in the first quarter of financial year 2013-14.

Govt To Notify SEZ Reforms SoonThe government yesterday said it will soon notify the Special Economic Zonesreforms which seek to ease land requirement norms and provide for an exitpolicy. “I think in a couple of weeks time rules will come out,” CommerceSecretary S R Rao told reporters on the sidelines of an Assocham function inNew Delhi. In the supplementary Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), the governmenthad announced these reforms. TCS Finland To Sack Up To 290 EmployeesTata Consultancy Services, may sack as many as 290 employees at itsFinland office, a move that the workers say is an attempt to shift jobs toIndia. TCS, which has a registered office in Helsinki and has an employeestrength of about 800 in Finland, is currently in negotiations with theemployee representatives (ERs) over the move to cut jobs. The Union ofProfessional Engineers in Finland (UIL) claimed that the jobs at stake wereabout 412, a figure which TCS said was inaccurate. “If I remember... 412,I believe is the correct number,” UIL Director (Collective Bargaining) IsmoKokko told PTI when asked about the number of jobs at stake in TCS.When contacted, a TCS spokesperson said: “The maximum number ofroles affected is 290 and not the numbers you have mentioned, which arecompletely inaccurate.” Lay-offs may be less than even 290, some sourcesprivy to TCS management thinking said.

dian companies are investing in so-cial media as part of externalcommunications for customers andsuppliers (global average 33%), 48%invest in public cloud applications(global average 24%) and 40 per centin adopting mobile technologies forcustomers (global average 31 %).“Mobility defines the new ways of

Asia-Pacific utilities are wellplaced to benefit from the re-

gion’s increasing appetite for energy. But evolving regulations, fuel short-ages, rising costs, and lagging recov-eries could put the brakes onperformance. That’s according to areport, titled “Managing Fuel Access,Costs, And Recoveries Is Key ToKeeping Asia-Pacific Utilities’ LightsOn,” that Standard & Poor’s RatingsServices published yesterday. The rating agency believes that

overall favorable economic condi-tions and an expandingmiddle classin most of the region will likely un-derpin Asia’s growing demand for en-ergy. However, much will depend onthe prices and the mix of fuel, andcompanies’ ability to recover the as-sociated costs. Also, utilities in sev-eral Asian countries have to contendwith evolving regulations and tariffpolicies, and expansion-related cap-

ital expenditure.“Generally, the strong position of

the rated utilities in their respectivemarkets should enable them to ben-efit from rising demand and at leastsustain their cash flows over the next12months,” said S&P’s credit analystRajivVishwanathan. “But Japan, Aus-tralia, and New Zealand remain ex-ceptions to the growth trend.”Standard & Poor’s expects the

Asia-Pacific utilities sector to remainlargely stable over the next 12months. About 80% of the rated util-ities in the region have a stable ratingoutlook. Exceptions are utilities inIndia (fuel and policy issues), Japan(uncertain policy and fuel costs), andKorea (new investments). The ratingson individual issuers depend ontheir financial and competitive posi-tions and level of government sup-port, if any.Asia’s demand for energy is likely

to remain strong in 2013, given sup-portive economic growth prospects.

The region’s large power deficitmakes demand somewhat inelastic, and this could provide a cushion inunexpected downside scenarios. Theresidential sector accounts for a largepart of the demand in countries suchas Malaysia and Thailand. India andIndonesia have a large pent-up de-mand for power due to their lowelectrification rates, of about 65%and 70%, respectively. Demand inChina is likely to growmoderately in2013, similar to the trend in 2012.“The leverage of power utilities in

Asia is likely to increase as they un-dertake large capital expenditure toincrease generation capacity over thenext 12-24 months to meet growingdemand,” saidVishwanathan.“But most rated utilities in the re-

gion have a strong standing in creditmarkets and adequate to strong liq-uidity, and should not face any diffi-culty in refinancing upcoming debtmaturities and funding capital ex-penditure.”

has been imposed for his allega-tions against some MCA office-bearers, regarding a December 28T20 match, which have beenfound untrue after the associa-tion conducted an inquiry. Thedecision to ban Shetty, who hasbeen associated with the MCA forseveral years and served it in thecapacity of committee member, secretary, treasurer and vice pres-ident, was taken on May 14 by themanaging committee. The committee also gave

Shetty had been given a chanceto furnish proof about his allega-tions with show cause notice andhe had replied to it "in a very eva-sive manner" and did not furnishany proof in respect of public al-legations made by him at theAGM. "After considering the replygiven by you, the Managing Com-mittee came to the conclusionthat you did not have any specificproof in respect of the allegationsof the black marketing of Ahmed-abad T20 match tickets by the of-fice bearers of MCA and that thesaid allegations were baseless, unsubstantiated and false."Stating that Shetty had been

given a chance to hear the audiorecording of his statement at theAGM and there was no change inhis stand, the two joint secre-taries have spelt out that theyhave been authorised by Savantto inform him of the decision todebar him till June 2, 2018 fromparticipating in any matters per-taining to the activities of the as-sociation. However, thefirm has made it clear thatDhoni was a shareholder onlyfor a brief period, and cur-rently has no stakes. But for-mer Indian cricketers andsports management executivesfeel that Dhoni should not puthimself in such a position wherequestions could be raised about apossible conflict of interest. is acting as an agent for a living.Butwhen I seePragyanOjhabeingrelegated to second choice left-arm spinner suddenly and Ravin-dra Jadeja being valued at USD 2million after being banned for try-ing to cut underhand deals in IPL,I guess something is wrong. Also ifthe companydidn't have sufficientmoney, how did they issue sharesand paid it back," Azad pointedout.LatikaKhaneja ofCollage Sports

obvious conflict of interest andalso raised questions about Rs 210croredeal thatwas struckbetweenthe captain and the company."Obviously there is conflict of in-terest.The first question that cropsup is Rs 210 croreminimumguar-antee money which is huge.Ravindra Jadeja was managed

by my company from 2006-2011.But if a player comes andwants tojoin another firm, you can't stophim and especially if the firm isalso managing the Indian cap-tain," Khaneja said. Another for-mer cricketerManinder Singhalsofelt if the captain indeed hadshares itwas a clear caseof conflictof interest. "Butwhodoyouexpectto stop the rot when the BCCIPresident has gone against every-one who has stood up for thegame...Basically the President hasbeen saving the captain who isalso vice-president in his com-pany," he said.Former India opener and cur-

rently DDCA Vice-PresidentChetan Chauhan said ethically itwas not correct for Dhoni to havestakes in the company whichmanageshim. "Ethically this is notcorrect. It seems to be tricklingdown from the President. TheBoard officials need to take someharsh decisions andmake it clearwhat business the players and of-ficials can float of their own," hesaid.Another former Indian player

Madan Lal said that it was notproper for Dhoni to have stakesin the companybutdidnot thinkhe couldmanipulate team selec-tion. "There is noquestion that if itis true, there is a conflict of inter-est," he said.VVSLaxman,Dhoni's teammate

till recently, felt that the Indianskipper should sell off his shares, ifhe had any, as it could drive himinto a compromising situation. When such a problem arises, stakeholder should come out ofthe company by selling his sharesoff. I think that can solve all theproblems at one go," he said.
