Flesh vs. Spirit

• Freedom in Christ– From sin – John 8:31-34– From the Law of Moses – Romans 7:6– From the traditions of men – Galatians 4:9

• Christ desires that we be free – Galatians 5:1– Freedom is not license– Lusts of the flesh can bring destruction- Gal. 5:13-15

• We must walk in the Spirit – Galatians 5:16

The Spirit and Flesh Are Opposites

• At war with one another for our soul• A Christian must serve one or the other– Following the flesh will enslave – Romans 7:14-23– With the Spirit, we can defeat the flesh• Romans 8:12-14

If Led By the Spirit, Not Under Law• The Law– Reveals sin – Galatians 3:19; Romans 3:20– Condemns the sinner – Romans 3:19

• Under a state of condemnation– The Law does not provide forgiveness– The Law provides condemnation

• Those walking in the Spirit are not under condemnation– The Spirit has revealed the gospel

Those Who Fulfill the Lusts of the Flesh Will Not Inherit the Kingdom

Those Who Are Christ’s Have Crucified The Flesh

• In baptism, we die to sin and are crucified with Christ– Romans 6:1-10

• We continue to “crucify self”– Colossians 3:5-11

• If we don’t, there is no hope– Romans 8:13

If We Live In the Spirit,We Must Walk In the Spirit

• Our spiritual lives are due to the Holy Spirit– He made known the gospel• John 16:7-13• 1 Corinthians 2:9-13

• We must walk in the Spirit– Led by the Spirit – Gal. 5:18; Romans 8:14– Walking in the Spirit – Galatians 5:25; Romans 8:1-2

Spirit vs. Flesh?

• The Spirit and the Flesh are contrary to each other

• If one is led by the Spirit, he is not under the law• If one fulfills the lusts of the flesh, he will not

inherit the kingdom of God• Those belonging to Christ have crucified the flesh• Since we live in the Spirit, we should also walk in

the Spirit
