From age 4 to 10 I lived in Australia, close to Sydney in the Northern Beaches. Our Christmas photos are of us bronze-skinned kids opening presents in our fl ip-fl ops and speedos, because Christmas was at the hottest point in the summer. Despite the sub-tropical climate, Christmas was as magical as anywhere in the northern hemisphere, and we anticipated the visit from the old fellow on the sleigh with wonder. My fondest memory is when I drew a picture of a car for Santa which I placed on the chimney of our house a couple of days before Christmas. A few weeks later, I had forgotten about it, and my dad asked me if I had checked to see if Santa had taken the picture. I climbed on the roof, and there was a note "Th ank you Andy, Santa".  I was so excited. I still have the note.

A Holiday HikeWe had moved to Agassiz in 2003 from a cabin in

the mountains. We were used to being above the snow line. Living in the Valley was agreeing with us in many ways, but we longed to fl y up above the coastal cloud in wintertime. One day close to Christmas rain was falling mixed with snow, the fi rst we had seen that year. We decided to go in search of a Winter Wonderland near home. We drove to the base of what is locally known as Th e Green Grind. Dressed in winter gear and boots we hiked up the steep curving slope. Before

long we found ourselves in a silent, Narnia-like forest. Snow was falling, snow on snow, decorating tree limbs and covering the path. We hiked up to the radio tower, tasting snowfl akes on our tongues and stopping to throw loosely packed snowballs at each other. We found the book we had been told about by a local hiker and wrote our names in it. We made our way slowly down the mountain, carefully, and with satisfaction in our hearts. We had found our White Christmas.

Rebecca Schram,Kent Harrison Arts Council

I remember the winters in Ottawa when I was growing up.  Th e bitter cold and snow which made the season feel like Christmas.  Ears, fi ngers, and toes ‘tingled’ when outside in the icy weather and the snow was ploughed into high banks in ditches along side of the road.  My father marked the edges of our drive way against the ditches with round red refl ectors on the end of metal rods.  Family from the city would spend Christmas Day with us and without fail, although the driveway was marked, someone leaving at the end of the day, would back their car into the ditch.   Th e teasing was relentless as everyone, dressed in their Sunday best, pitched in to push the stranded car back onto the road.  With the task completed we went back into the house with ears, fi ngers, and toes that ‘tingled’ from the icy weather.

Our family’s tradition dates back to 1979. Our children were 5 and 3 with a 7 week old baby. We decided to venture out on Christmas Eve and visit our parents for dinner. Nanna asked our 3 year old what he wanted for dinner and Andrew answer “barbequed hamburgers”. Nanna being a grandmother she went out and bought a hibachi and we had our fi rst great Christmas Eve BBQ. Now you must know that the grandparents lived on the 14th fl oor of a high rise, we had the apartment manager come knocking on the door, barbequing

was not allowed on the balconies. Who knew? Th at started it and every year since we

have had barbequed hamburgers, even in the cockpit of our sailboat under a tarp, outside in the snow, rain and wind. Our kids are all grown and married and they even have a BBQ sometimes on Christmas Eve, Gerry and I even now have barbequed hamburgers, not always done outside getting a little cold for us to do.

I spent much of my childhood anticipating Christmas.  We’d saw off a lopsided tree in the bush, which Dad would fi x by drilling holes in the trunk with his old hand drill and inserting branches.  Th ere were school parties and a big children’s program at church, followed by long-awaited candy bags - but especially there were presents.  We combed the Eatons and Sears catalogues for months and laid under the blinking lights of the Christmas tree for hours; speculating, shaking packages

and trying to read through the wrapping.

Christmas Eve would start with our favourite meal, Kentucky Fried Chicken.  Mom and Dad methodically washed the dishes and tidied up, then read the Christmas story, by which time we were almost mad with excitement.  Finally Mom would hand out the gift s and we all had to watch each one be opened and share their joy, whether feigned or real.

True, we seldom got exactly what we wanted, but it was a

magical time nevertheless.  It was about so much more than material things, it was about a secure family, the ideal of the Christ child, the love of parents and a cease-fi re between siblings.  It was all very special.

I wish, so much, that every kid in BC this Christmas will enjoy a little of what I did.

 Laurie Th roness,MLA Chilliwack-Hope

Christmas has always been about family time, my favorite Christmas and most special was 31 years ago and the birth of my

son Eric early in the morning of Boxing Day. Leaving my parents home Christmas evening and whispering to my Nannie with a wink, as we had to

take her home, that it was time. She got the “wink” right away and didn’t tell anyone.

Of course there’s all the Charlie Brown trees (the best kind) that dad would bring home. Nannies’s shortbread, and to this day my mom’s butter tarts. Th e family dinner, the table set with the best of the best and the family, friends, neighbors, and of course Grandpa Roger Pickard’s laugh as he lay on the fl oor

playing with all the kids. Th e winter activities as a child seemed to always be so much fun “in the day”

skating at the old Curling Rink in Harrison and then skiing every possible day up at Hemlock was how I remember the school holidays as a child.

Merry Christmas!

Memories of Christmas:

As a youngster......assembling hand-coloured paper chains for decorating...fi guring out what that gift under the tree was...participating in a Christmas program

As a parent......caroling around the neighbourhood with our children and friends...distributing homemade candy cane cookies...skating on our backyard ice rink on Christmas Eve

A tradition that keeps repeating itself is the exchange of Christmas cards and/or letters. We have lived in a variety of places during our married life. For 27 years, I have written a letter to share with our family and friends in the various places we have lived.

Best of all is the anticipation of receiving a card or letter in return. Frequently it is the one time each year we hear from distant friends. Jacquie and I make

sure we are sitting together with a hot drink, reading about some of the journeys each of our loved ones is on, knowing that the journey God has for each of us is frequently one of waiting and surprises (some painful), but always a journey of hope and peace.

Christmas on Limberts MountainSir Ratford the Rabbit sat by the fi re

drinking his blackberry tea and waiting for his fi g cakes to be baked. “My goodness,” he said, "Christmas is almost here! Th e socks are knit and mittens too for all my friends. Th e forest tree was decorated in the cornor of the room and a star was twinkling atop while the pine smell fi lled the air."

A knock came to the door. Sir Ratford opened it to fi nd his dear friends Sam the mouse and Ginny, the Cricket covered in snow.

“ Come in my friends and get warm by the fi re while I make you some Blackberry tea.”

Th ey were soon warm and cozy in this little home. Again they heard a knock at the door. Sir Ratford went to the door to fi nd all the forest creatures standing in the snow. “Come in my friends”, it’s cold outside.”

As they came in, they

fi lled the room and the warmth of the fi re warmed their toes, Sir Ratford sat and smiled. How nice it was to share his Christmas with all the creatures of Limber’s Mountain. Th ey all came in diff erent shapes, colors and sizes there was Louie the badger, Harry the skunk and Freddy the Frog for just a few. To all sit together as friends it was a wonderful Christmas gift !

As the creatures sang O Holy Night, a wonderful peace came over Limbert Mountain .Th e Valley below was quiet on this special night there was a blanket

of new snow with the lights from the houses twinkling here and there. Families were

sharing the joy of a special birth. A lone star was in the sky over the barn just to remind us all of the humble beginnings of a King.

Merry Christmas from Limbert’s Mountain

Th e Spirit of Christmas lives through the incredibly thoughtful and generous supporters of Agassiz-Harrison Community Services (AHCS). Last year AHCS was fortunate to start a program that invited the community at large to help support individuals and families who may not necessarily have the opportunity to celebrate the holiday season, we continued this tradition this year and the community responded! Th e families who were supported experienced many kinds of emotions along with the volunteers and staff of AHCS.

Warm memories have been created with each item donated to this year’s Christmas Hamper program; smiles will creep upon a child’s face when “Santa” has left something under the tree when perhaps this may not have happened prior to the community involvement. Th ose kinds of smiles and memories can last a lifetime for the parents and the children and Agassiz-Harrison Community Services cannot do it without the very generous support of the community and for this we thank you!

Agassiz-Harrison Community Services would like to wish all of its supporters, volunteers and donors a very Happy Holiday Season!

Grace Admiral-Blansjee,Agassiz-Harrison Community Services

“Well, if you really look at it, everything we take care of, and everything we look at, belongs to Band Members.

At Seabird, we like to look at it in terms of how we involve everyone. Our Fire Department does a Hamper Food Drive. Th ey participate. It’s a big part of what they represent. Our Hamper Drive is set up to bring back something to people who don’t have the ability to buy everything they need. We try to involve everybody, not just on Seabird Island, but our extended family too.

I still remember when I was a young boy, probably around the 8th of December, we used to have a dinner here that involved all of the communities. Our people used to have

Christmas Dinner and every family used to come and bring something for dinner. Th at was very important. Th at was their way of sharing back then.

Right now, our Community Christmas Dinner we have revolves around our children, because our future belongs to them. Th is is our way of bringing them forward, and showing them in many diff erent ways that this is our walk together.”

On behalf of Seabird Island Band Council, Staff and Band Members, Chief Clem Seymour wishes everyone a Merry Christmas.

My favorite Christmas memory:

I am one of a very large family who gathered together not only at Christmas but on every occasion to celebrate the day and to celebrate life! Although later in life, as we chose diff erent paths, we did not gather as much, we continued to enjoy the Christmas season each in our own ways. Most of my family has now left this beautiful earth for a place in Paradise

but the memories of my childhood Christmases keep them close in my heart. Christmas Eve always started with a banquet of food for our family and any of those around us that perhaps did not have a place to go. My Mom, who was of Ukrainian descent, prepared 12 non-meat dishes for us and it included our favorite which was Kutia, a sweet grain pudding. We feasted, sang carols then all went to midnight

mass to experience how Christmas came to be and to give thanks for all we had in this beautiful world. Aft erwards we went home and opened our gift s, as by then, Santa had arrived (somehow). Year aft er year we repeated this tradition and now my heart holds these memories dearly, as my family continues to build our own traditions.

Cindy Helmer,Branch Manager,Prospera Credit Union

My wife and I love re-creating traditions with our 3 young kids. Each year we pick a Christmas tree, take it home & decorate it together. We listen to Christmas music, drink hot chocolate, and sing & dance around our living room. We laugh, break ornaments (accidentally), we cry, glue the pieces back together, & remember God is with us. Th ere’s nothing like spending time together for re-creating memories and relationships.

Re: Recent Property Crime in Popkum, BC

I am writing to inform the residents of the Popkum/Rosedale area of an increase in property crime between the period of October 1, 2015 and December 8, 2015. Th is increase is concerning, and as your police of jurisdiction we want to keep our residents informed so steps are taken to target harden your property and prevent further off ences from occurring.

Th ere are currently several police investigations into these matters, and to date police have arrested a number of off enders related to theft s in the Popkum area.

It is important for residents to take a proactive approach to ensure their property is safe. Keeping your property lit and valuables out of sight and locked up are two easy steps to deter thieves. Th e Agassiz RCMP has adopted a new schedule to provide its residents with 24 hour police coverage. Th e property related off ences have been primarily taking place during the overnight hours of Th ursday to Sunday. It is very important to report all suspicious activity to police. Reporting has resulted in successfully arresting and charging one off ender for stealing gasoline from vehicles in the Rose Garden Estates last week, as well as, identify other potential suspects.

Th e police utilize a tool referred to as Crime Prevention Th rough Environmental Design (CPTED). CPTED is used to target harden residential and business properties. CPTED has three main principles to guide the property owner. Th ey are: Natural Surveillance (keeping potential intruders under observation), Natural Access Control, and Territorial Reinforcement. I encourage all to research the CPTED concepts and adopt them to your property.

Th e following bullets are ideas to decrease the risk of being victimized by property crime off enders:Doors

• Keep your doors locked at all times even when you’re home;• Ensure all exterior doors are solid core hardwood or metal covered and are equipped with good quality dead bolts;• Glass in outside doors should be shatter resistant and should be at least 40cm from the lock;• Ensure all out-swing doors have a hinge with a locking pin or non-removable pins;• Ensure your patio door bar is fastened into both the frame and the door to securely lock the door;• Insert screws into the top track of your patio door to prevent it from being lift ed up and removed;• Do not open your door to anyone you don’t know. Speak through the door;Garage• Your automatic garage door opener should use a “rolling code” system to prevent “code grabbing”;• If the garage door is not equipped with an electronic opener, it should have heavy duty padlocks installed on both sides of the door;• Keep the door from the garage into the house locked;• Keep your garage door opener in a non-visible spot in your vehicle, or ideally not kept in your vehicle;• Remove your keys from vehicles parked inside your garage even if the garage is locked; • Remove all valuables from plain sight in your vehicle; • Have window coverings on all garage windows;Windows• All basement and ground fl oor windows should be fi tted with window security bars, security pins or security latches; • Basement and ground fl oor windows should be shatter resistant; • Ensure all windows have coverings that prevent outsiders from seeing in; • Display decals on accessible windows that would alert potential intruders that you are security-minded and have preventative measures in;

Alarm System• Have a functioning alarm system installed in your home; • Arm the alarm system if you are going to be in your backyard for any length of time; • Have sensors installed on every door and every window; • Place decals on your accessible windows and doors stating that the house is protected by an alarm system;• Advise your neighbours to call the police should your alarm go off while you are away;Vacations• Stop all regular deliveries (e.g., newspapers, milk, etc); • Utilize timers on lights and radios; • Test your smoke and burglar alarms; • Turn the bell or ringer on your telephone down low or off ; • Unplugged or lock your overhead garage door to prevent entry; • Have someone take care of your yard; • Have your mail held or picked up; • Notify your neighbours and ask them to keep an eye on your place; • Leave an address and telephone number for where you can be reached with a trusted neighbour so you can be contacted in case of an emergency; • Ask a neighbour to park in your driveway so it appears someone is home; • Keep a list of all valuable property (credit cards and serial numbers) in a safe place; • Engrave valuable property with your driver’s license or BC ID number (Th e Agassiz RCMP can assist you wit one to you)

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call the Agassiz RCMP at (604)796-2211 and ask to speak with an Offi cer regarding Crime Prevention.

Horgan on trade, carbon tax and LNG

Keep the giving goingTh ere is no shortage of opportunities for residents to show their charitable

side this holiday season.Whether it’s a shelter, looking to provide meals and clothing for the

homeless, a food bank trying to fi ll the cupboards of low-income families and individuals, or an animal shelter issuing a desperate plea for help to feed abandoned animals, the need is evident and it seems to be never-ending.

Th is is the time of year when people tend to dig a little bit deeper to support many worthy causes. It’s the season of giving, and that’s a good thing, because it’s also the season during which want is most keenly felt.

Th at’s why local agencies such as Agassiz-Harrison Community Services are already planning for next year.

Th ese, and other seasonal eff orts, play a crucial role in helping to ensure people with limited means have, at minimum, a hearty meal and a gift or two to unwrap.

But once the lights have been taken down, the tree chipped and the last hot turkey sandwich eaten, we have a tendency to return to our daily routine and think less oft en about neighbours who may be scraping by.

It’s a constant struggle for food banks, for example, where each Th anksgiving and Christmas — and perhaps at Easter — they see a jump in donations, but are forced to make do for much of the year, when donations slow to a trickle.

Th e remedy for our collective forgetfulness might be something as simple as a note on each calendar page or arranging a regular pre-paid contribution, via credit card or post-dated cheques.

It makes sense from both a budgeting point of view — smaller regular payments, versus a large lump sum at a time of year when fi nances are already strained — and in terms of helping the organizations that many depend upon, year-round, to avoid the cycle of feast or famine.

NDP leader John Horgan sat down with Tom Fletcher for a year-end interview in his Victoria offi ce Dec. 10. Here are excerpts. For the full version, see the Opinion tab at agassizharrisonobserver.com.

TF: In the recent federal election, national NDP leader Th omas Mulcair rejected the Trans Pacifi c Partnership sight unseen, endorsing letters from Unifor and CUPE saying this is a bad deal. Is your party seen as against Pacifi c Rim trade?

JH: No, I don’t think so, and what I said at the time was that I support trade. We’re a trade-centred province. We’re looking across the ocean at the largest market the world has known, and I support getting our products to

higher-priced markets.But having said that, the B.C.

Liberals embraced TPP without even having seen it.

TF: Th e NDP and unions have historically been protectionist. Do you see any need to modernize the B.C. party?

JH: When it comes to trade, I think we have modernized. And who was the fi rst premier to go on a trade mission from British Columbia? It was Dave Barrett. And now there has been a succession of premiers make regular visits to other markets to try to stimulate economic activity here at home.

TF: Your party supports the carbon tax now, but not the revenue neutral approach. Do you support increasing the rate?

JH: I’ve looked carefully at the report tabled by the premier's [advisory] group, a vast array of British Columbians, and there was a lot of water put into the wine to get to the position they got

to. What I’m comfortable with is that the date that they've selected for a ramping up of the carbon tax is 2018, which will be a year aft er the next provincial election.

So if I’m successful and form a government, I’ll have time to look at tax policy broadly to see if we can make improvements in the carbon tax.

For me, and I think for most British Columbians, the model that Alberta has adopted of taking revenues and driving them into industries, or activities like transit, that will reduce emissions over time.

TF: Natural gas price and volume continue to go down, along with commodities generally, and supply of oil and gas keeps going up. What's your take on the prospects for LNG aft er the year we’ve had?

JH: Not good. I’ve always said price will determine whether investors drop down multi-billions of dollars in a far-away place to provide a product that is not developed here. Brownfi eld opportunities have moved very quickly in the U.S. Changing LNG import facilities to export facilities is a whole lot easier and cheaper than starting from scratch.

Getting to the coast is a challenge for fossil fuels, and the last LNG price point I saw delivered in Asia

was $5.70 a unit. You're not going to make money at that price, even with rock-bottom prices here in B.C.

TF: We’ve just had a couple of announcements as part of the government’s Jobs Plan, $100 million in fi nancing for tech startups, which your critic was pleased about, and an agriculture and food strategy. Are we going to see more Jobs Plan advertising in the new year?

JH: It’s the Christmas season, the federal election is over, there are two sets of ads running now. I think these ads are self-promotion. Th ese are not informing the public on information that they really need.

If it’s just smiling people with hardhats on, I think we’re going to have something to say about that.

We’re a trade-centred province. We’re looking across the ocean at the

largest market the world has known, and I support getting our products to higher-priced markets

Dear Editor, I must correct your article on

page 4 of the Dec 10th edition.  Th e headline is incorrect. Th ere is no “Regional Park” being created in Harrison All that is happening is that the province is fulfi lling a pledge of provincial lands made many years ago. Th at pledge was to dedicate their portion of the East Sector to the future Harrison Forest Park. Th eir land, about 230 acres, will be set aside as a Recreational Site under the Forests and Natural Resources Ministry.  A provincial “Rec. Site”   is nothing like a Regional District Park. ( I was on the FVRD Park Committee when we formed the Cheam Wetlands Regional Park).  Th e province does not own 300 acres, only the 240 acres noted above in the South and East areas. Th e Village

of Harrison does not lease any land. We used to lease 77.342 acres alongside McComb Drive. At the suggestion of my clerk, Malcolm Wright, I obtained title to this while mayor back in about 1979.  We, the people of Harrison, own that land.

If any improvements are made in the new year, as stated, they will be late in the new year as neither FVRD or the province have even started the planning process.  Th ere has been no public consultation as yet and our own OCP requires a public process.   Th e main North-South trail is called the Bridle Trail, not the Bridal Trail. (Th ink horses, not weddings) .  Th e Harrison Forest park project did not start in 2012 with Facio. It actually started in about 1984 as part of Harrison’s OCP review.  Th ough

he would like us to think he has achieved something great here, he hasn’t.   Instead he continues to work towards the clear cutting and development of the critical Northern block which was pledged to the community as part of the Harrison Forest Park during the OCP adoption process.

Th e Offi cial Community Plan is still the supreme land-use bylaw in Harrison, despite the mayor`s attempts to dismiss it as irrelevant. Th at OCP still requires the council (and the FVRD) to work towards the creation of the complete Harrison Forest Park, including the Northern block. It does not call for a smaller, more remote park as an alternative.

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year

Personal Finance

With the uncertainty of job loss racing through many people’s minds these days, taking a proactive approach to this issue by putting m o r t g a g e payments aside while you’re still actively employed can help set your mind at ease.

Planning for the future and potential job loss is one of the most important undertakings you can make to ensure you can pay your mortgage in an uncertain economy.

Dominion Lending Centres Mortgage Professionals oft en suggest you put money aside each pay period so you can place six to 12 months’ worth of mortgage payments into a short-term GIC as security for a possible job loss.

And, best of all, if your job remains secure, you can take the money out of your GIC and make a pre-payment back on your mortgage on your anniversary date, which can end up saving you thousands of dollars in interest payments.Refi nancing to access

your home’s equityBut if it’s not plausible

to save money each pay period, refi nancing to access the equity you’ve already built up in your home is another valid option for planning ahead in uncertain times.

In addition to freeing up money to store future mortgage payments in a GIC, some of the money can also be used to pay off high-interest debt – such as credit cards – and get you and your family off to a fresh fi nancial start.

You will fi nd that taking equity out of your home to pay off high-interest debt can put more money in your bank account each month.

And since interest rates are at historic lows, switching to a lower rate may save you a lot of money – possibly thousands of dollars per year.

Th ere are penalties for paying your mortgage loan out prior to renewal, but these could be off set by the extra money you acquire through a

refi nance. With access to more

money, you will be better able to manage your debt. Refi nancing your fi rst mortgage and

taking some existing equity out could also enable you to make other inves tments , go on vacation, do some renovations or even invest in your children’s education.

K e e p in mind, however, that

by refi nancing you may extend the time it will take to pay off your mortgage.

Options for paying your

mortgage down quickerTh ere are many ways to

pay down your mortgage sooner that could save you thousands of dollars in interest payments throughout the term of your mortgage.

Most mortgage products, for instance, include prepayment privileges that enable you to pay up to 20% of the principal (the true value of your mortgage minus the interest payments) per calendar year. Th is will also help reduce your amortization period (the length of your mortgage), which, in turn, saves you money.

Another way to lower the time it takes to pay off your mortgage involves changing the way you make your payments by opting for accelerated bi-weekly mortgage payments. Not to be confused with semi-monthly mortgage payments (24 payments per year), accelerated bi-weekly mortgage payments (26 payments per year) will not only pay your mortgage off quicker, but it’s guaranteed to save you a signifi cant amount of money over the term of your mortgage.

If, for instance, you have a $100,000 mortgage, an interest rate of 5% and an amortization period of 25 years, your monthly mortgage payment would be $581.60 and your total payments for a year would be $6,979.20 ($581.60 x 12).

To understand the savings accelerated bi-weekly mortgage

payments can make, take the monthly mortgage payment of $581.60 and divide it by two ($581.60 ÷ 2 = $290.80).  Next, take that payment and multiple it by 26 to arrive at your total payments for the year ($290.80 x 26 = $7,560.80).

As you can see, by using the monthly mortgage payment plan, you’ve made payments totalling $6,979.20 for the year, while using the accelerated bi-weekly mortgage plan you’ve made payments totalling $7,560.80 – a diff erence of $581.60.

Basically, with accelerated bi-weekly mortgage payments, you’re making one additional monthly

payment per year.Using this example,

you would reduce the amortization on your $100,000 mortgage from 25 years to just over 21 years and your total savings on interest over the life of the mortgage would be just over $12,000.

By refi nancing now and paying off your debt or putting money aside for future mortgage payments, you can put yourself and your family in a better fi nancial position.

Wishing you All a Joyous Christmas, and a Healthy 2016.

CommunityCommunity Dinner Time

in what’s becoming one of the highlights of the season, the annual Community Christmas Dinner filled the Agricultural Hall in Agassiz with holiday cheer last Wednesday. The event, hosted by the Agassiz Fire Department, drew nearly 160 people this year. To find out how you can help support next year’s dinner, call the Agassiz Fire Department at 604-796-2614.

Lucky library winnerBetty Moulton was

very lucky and took home the Agassiz Library Society: Friends of the Library Christmas Lucky Basket on Saturday.

It took two strong bodies to carry it as it was loaded with all kinds of surprises.  Every year, people look forward to trying their luck at this basket as it keeps getting bigger and better. Th is year it was accompanied by a local favourite, the Sasquatch.

All proceeds of this draw go directly towards making Agassiz Library the best library it can be and as we say at this time of year …. Better luck next time!
