Deciduous trees 1. The word Deciduous means to fall off, meaning that they are trees that lose their leaves. 2. The deciduous trees found in the area are the Douglas tree and Cotton wood. 3. Black cotton wood provides critical habitats for many local species such as owls, woodpeckers, bats,

racoons and birds.

Ecology1. The Okanogan highlands ecosystem is rooted in fire ecology.2. Fire ecology is when the forests have evolved in a way where fire helps renew the forest3. For example the pinecones of the Hodge pole pine tree need intense fire to release there seeds.

Population1. The population of Okanogan county is 42,132 people in 20182. The population of Omak was 4,833 in 2016 3. 23.2% of the population is under 18 years old

Wildlife1. There are over 44 mammals within the fauna inhabiting the Okanogan highlands2. One of the mammals who live here is the river otter which at full grown can weight 20 to 30 pounds 3. In the region there is also the Merriam’s wild turkey which has lighter tips on its tail feathers that

distinguishes it from other turkeys.
