The year 2018 marks the 400th anniversary of the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War (1618 - 1648)—one of the longest and most destructive wars in human history, that destroyed not only millions of lives, but also decimated the musical and cultural traditions of much of Europe. In the darkest shadows of war, musicians drew from what they had around them—imagining sacred music and country fiddlers uniting—music had the power to motivate, unite, comfort, heal, and lift people out of the depths of their grief. This program explores stylus fantasticus—a 17th century compositional form with emphasis on the range and depth of human emotion and its evocation in music—that evolved and grew in the countries and territories ravaged by the Thirty Years’ War. From the heartwrenching sorrow of Johann Christoph Bach's lament Ach, dass ich Wassers gnug hätte, to the resignation and yearning for a better day to come in David Pohle's Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe, Agave Baroque, “an energized and free spirited group” (—Early Music America), and star countertenor Reginald Mobley, “a young countertenor destined to make his mark on the early music world” (—Chicago Tribune) brings the listener on a tour of emotions…… There is also music of hope for a brighter tomorrow, including the virtuosic and passionate ciaconna from Johann Christoph Bach’s cantata Meine Freundin, du bist schön, written for a Bach family wedding, and the barely-contained overflowing joy of Johann Pachelbel’s Canon and Gigue, played here in its original version. TECHNICAL RIDER Program requires chamber organ at A=415. Mr. Lebedinsky will tune.
