Graves and Verdades, a 2002 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Florett AS x Liwilarda) owned by Graves, took charge in the Global Arena this week, coming out on the top of the leaderboard yet again, with a winning score of 81.903%. “[Friday night] he was hot, maybe hotter than he’s been the past two shows, so that was a bit challenging, and we have yet to ride a completely clean freestyle this year,” said Graves. “That’s definitely a focus going into March, but this horse does a fantastic job even when he’s hot and maybe a little spooky. He never lets me down, and he gets really excited when he’s about to go in. He knows when it’s his turn, and I love that about him.” This is Graves’ and Verdades’ fifth score in a row of 80% or higher in FEI Large Tour competition. Placing second and third to Graves in the FEI Grand Prix Free- style CDI-W were her fellow 2016 Olympic teammates and bronze medalists, Kasey Perry-Glass and Steffen Peters. Graves commented on her rela- tionship with her teammates “It’s so fun to have everyone back together and [to see] friendly faces. We are all so competitive; we’re all out there riding for two spots for the FEI World Cup (Finals). It doesn’t affect our relationships outside of that. It’s amazing to have friends that can compete against each other and want the best for each other. I just wish Steffen didn’t live in California.” Perry-Glass and Goerklintgaards Dublet, a 2003 Danish Warmblood gelding (Diamond Hit x La Costa x Olympic Ferro) owned by Diane Perry, placed second with a 79.541%. Perry-Glass commented on her ride with Dublet, “I was expecting a little bit of a nervous horse today. Debbie McDonald and I have been working tirelessly on his relaxation, and he proved it tonight. All of our hard work and dedication [is] to that, to his happiness in the ring. He showed me tonight that he has more in him and that he loves his job. I really liked our piaffe passage tour. Everything about the test was fun for me.” Peters rode Rosamunde, a 2007 Rhinelander mare (Rock Forever x First Lady) owned by Four Winds Farm, to third place, scoring 78.732%. “Of course she still had more energy than I was hoping for, but it was controllable,” said Peters. “The flying changes were better this time. (There was) a bit of an exuberant transition to the canter in the begin- ning, but what a good girl. She tried extremely hard.” It was three wins in a row for Laura Graves and Verdades in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, presented by The Axel Johnson Group, at AGDF 7. ©SusanJStickle.com Week seven kicked off on Wednesday, February 22, at the 2017 Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF), with another victory for Steffen Peters (USA) and mount Bailarino in the FEI Prix St. Georges CDI 1*, presented by Wellington Regional Medical Center. Commenting on the possibility of a competi-tion spot for the 2017 FEI World Cup Finals in Omaha, NE, Peters continued, “We will see what happens from here. The bottom line is, those are two extremely exciting World Cup candi-dates. If we happen to get a wild card, in that case, ‘Rosie’ and I will be ready.”

Judge at C, Isabel Wessels (GBR), spoke in regard to the rides she witnessed throughout the night.

“It was a really exciting competition to judge,” said Wessels. “I have to say, it was the first time I’ve done this new system, so it was nerve-wracking. I was blown away by the energy and scope of these three riders. They’re obviously good riders, but they have amazing horses. It’s just so lovely to sit there and think, ‘Oh should I give it a 9 or maybe a 10.’ It’s that type of judging where you can really find the high marks.”

What was your favorite memory from your trip to Rio? Laura: Hands down my favorite memory is when I finished the Grand Prix Special. We were neck and neck with the Dutch team and after my ride, my teammates came running down to the stadium to greet me. We had won bronze!

What is your next big goal in the saddle? Laura: This year, we are looking forward to the (FEI) World Cup (Finals) in Omaha. After last year, every day that I get to ride this horse is just a joy.

What is your next big goal out of the saddle? Laura: We are currently working to build our farm. It is a whole other full-time job, but I am excited.

Did you learn anything new about yourself while in Rio? Laura: I learned how much I really like to compete. I’ve always known I was competitive, especially in my sport, but I truly enjoy the competition.

How did Diddy handle the trip? Laura: Diddy has flown a number of times now, and he handled the trip really well. Getting to travel with other horses makes it quite easy. They go everywhere as a herd.

Did you learn anything new about Diddy during your trip to Rio? Laura: I learned that he really likes a stadium. He doesn’t much care for small arenas with no atmosphere. He gets very excited when he knows it is almost his turn to go.

How would you describe the dynamics of your Rio Dressage team? Laura: Each member of our squad is a very different personality. We all just happened to have the same goals, good sportsmanship, and horsemanship. Even though we are so different, we share a similar sense of humor and became the very best of friends!

Laura Graves (USA) is a 2016 Olympic Bronze Medalist and a 2015 Pan American Games Gold and Silver Medalist. Graves is also an accomplished international FEI competitor and USDF Gold Medalist and has been studying the art of dressage for over 20 years. In 2002, Graves purchased her Olympic mount Verdades and began working with him. In

2014, Debbie McDonald scouted the pair at a dressage com-petition, and shortly after, offered to coach them. In the span of 12 months, Diddy and Graves went from unknowns to one

of the top ten dressage combinations in the world.

The historic and beloved Pam Beach Dres-sage Derby CDI-W, presented by Everglades Dressage, will return to the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival for the third consecutive year and include two days of exciting derby-style competition during Week 8 on Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4.

The Palm Beach Dressage Derby is histor-ically the first-ever CDI event to call Florida home, and was an immediate hit with riders, volunteers, sponsors, and spectators since its inception more than thirty years ago. Founded by Gisela and Howald Pferdekaemper of Germany in an effort to bring the excitement of the Olympic sport of dressage to the U.S., the Palm Beach Dressage Derby quickly accom-plished their goal. Drawing competitors from all corners of the world, past riders have hailed from Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.S.

Inspired by the Hamburg Dressage Derby of Germany, the Palm Beach Dressage Derby format is highlighted by four riders swapping horses in the final stage of competition. The riders slated to take part in the 2017 edition of the Palm Beach Dressage Derby include

defending champion Chris Von Martels (CAN), as well as Mikala Munter-Gundersen (DEN), Christoph Koschel (GER), and Juan Matute Jr. (ESP).

Horses for the Palm Beach Dressage Derby will be donated to the riders for the event and will include Truman de Ymas, owned by Juan Pablo Molina, Wrazzmattazz, owned by Jaimey Irwin, and Action Ace, owned by Kelly Lane.

Competition will kick off on Friday, March 3, at 1:40 p.m. with a Prix St. Georges class for the horses and their regular riders, followed by the semi-finals taking place on Saturday, March 4, at 4:20 and 4:50 p.m. The final stage of compe-tition will take the stage and decide a winner during the intermission of the evening Musical Freestyle performances on Saturday, March 4.

While a cherished part of the South Florida dressage community, the Palm Beach Dres-sage Derby has also become a popular and successful addition to the competition at AGDF.

Thomas Baur, Director of Sport at AGDF, noted, “We will definitely continue to see this class in the future, and I would like to thank all of the owners who donated their horses and to the riders who participated.”

How did Lutz come into your training program?Susanne: We bought him in Germany in July of 2015 as a 12-year-old. His owner Tina Hinckley was looking for an elegant little mare, nice to sit on and preferably black. We made the decision to purchase Lutz instead, and we’ve never looked back. Tina is his primary rider. I will sit on him for occasional adjustments, but basically only take over the ride about a week before a CDI competiti-on.

What is his personality like? Susanne: He is perfect in every way!

What has surprised you the most about Lutz? Susanne: I never counted on truly falling in love with a little cream-colored, blonde horse, bar-ley-making 15.2 hands. I’m not alone... we have gotten well wishes from all over the world, in countries whose languages I don’t even understand.

What are your future goals with Lutz? Susanne: Our number one goal is to make his owner Tina Hinckley happy, and he does! We bought him for her to ride and have fun with. When I do take the ride, we are aiming for a national Grand Prix, and that is not so far out of reach now.

What are your own future goals in the saddle? Susanne: I am currently competing my Trakehner stallion, Lord Locksley, owned by Meg Stevens, at CDI Grand Prix, and the goal of course is always to improve what we have and to bring what we have at home, into the show ring. I also have several other horses started, one of them is a Lord Locksley daughter, and I’m just enjoying the training process.

Faces of AGDF: Susanne HamiltonIt’s hard to mistake Lutz, the 15.2-hand high 2003 Haflinger gelding by Argument x Mandy, when

he competes with Susanne Hamilton in the Global Arena at AGDF. This gelding may be little, but he has a lot of heart and talent, and that is what has made him such a fan favorite with equestrians all over the world. During the “Friday Night Stars” halftime last week, Susanne and Lutz recorded an

astounding 58 two-tempi changes in a row to win The Dressage Foundation’s Two-Tempi Challenge, presented by The Axel Johnson Group! They received some of the biggest cheers of the night.
