Becoming a Patron of The Tempus Fugitives Tempus Fugitives Patrons are members who have made one or more charitable donations (minimum 25 Pounds UK Sterling) to the operational fund for the forum (found at www.tempusfugitives.co.uk). Your donation is gratefully received and there are a couple of nice "thank you for donating" perks associated with it. The rapidly-growing Tempus Fugitives Forum costs a fair amount of money to develop and maintain (over £400 in two months alone). We have our web server to pay for (including the considerable traffic/bandwidth) as well as investing in new and exciting projects to enhance the gaming experience either at one of our weekends or in your own home through our expansions and supplements. If we had to continue to pay the operational costs of the Fugitives out of pocket as we did during the start-up months, we wouldn't be able to stay running very long! Staging our weekends provides us with some limited additional funding, but our principle has always been to put what ever available funds we have back into the weekends. Therefore, we ask our members to pitch in, strictly on a voluntary basis. There is absolutely NO OBLIGATION to make a donation and you aren't stigmatised for not donating. If you want to use the forum for free, that's what it's here for and we're glad to have you. Many of you enjoy the forum enough to donate money to its operation, and we've got a way to say "thank you" for your generosity. Read on! There are several benefits to supporting this forum by donating money and becoming a Patron. They are: Patron Title: Instead of the basic set of fixed user titles you are given the prestigious Patron title. This will be attached to your user name for roughly a year from the date of your last donation. Free Gift: As a thank you for making any donation of 25 Pounds UK Sterling or more we will post to you a high quality softcover edition of any of our Campaign Guides, Codices or Expansions of your choice. Just email us after you donate with your request. These editions are not available to purchase and is not given away at our gaming weekends! There will be additional benefits over time, to be announced. We can take donations to the Tempus Fugitives through PayPal only. The payment process is completely automated through the 'Donate Now!' button found on our website. The minimum donation to receive the "thank you" perks is only 25 Pounds UK Sterling (£25) per year but you can donate less if you wish (or more) and may make multiple donations either simultaneously or over time. Be aware that PayPal "instant payments" will make your donation take effect immediately, but PayPal "electronic check/cheque payments" can take up to a week to clear (and your Patron membership will not begin until the payment has cleared PayPal). Consult PayPal's own help pages for more information on the different payment types. Please try to make sure that when you subscribe through PayPal, you're doing so using the same email address as the one you signed up for! If you don't, and the transaction does not complete properly, contact Ignatius and include the following: your user ID/handle, and the email address you paid with using PayPal. Note that it may take a small amount of time to put the situation right. At this time, PayPal is the only method of donation payment available. We will be exploring other donation payment methods. If you'd like to make a donation on behalf of another user, contact Ignatius or Ulfhedin and we can take care of it (it's easy, it just involves doing PayPal outside of the Forum itself). Please note that every one of your donations goes directly to the Tempus Fugitives' operational fund. The hope is that this site will be entirely financed by your donations. This is why we are so very grateful for your help! Whether you choose to make a donation or not, remember: it's just an option, and you don't need to. But if you'd like to contribute, there are some nice perks that go along with it. Either way... we hope you enjoy the forum! Please note: Donations are non-refundable. Thank you! Ulfhedin July 2012

PLAYING WITH THE EXPANSION

ERA AVAILABILITY As the passage of history unfolds, events are put in motion which changes the galaxy forever. New and exotic units come into being while others are sacrificed on the altar of progress. Certain units and upgrades are only available at specific times during the Age of the Emperor.

The Great Crusade Era Following the Unification of Terra, the Great Crusade is declared.

The Great Betrayal Era The battle for Prospero, Calth, Istvaan and the Drop Site Massacre.

The Age of Darkness Era The seven years of civil war as the galaxy burns.

The Siege of Terra Era The battle for Terra and the confrontation between Horus and the Emperor.

The Great Scouring Era The exodus to the Eye of Terror; rise of the chapters and the last of the Primarchs.

LEGEND POINTS X During the Age of the Emperor, the Legions of the Astartes are brotherhoods of legend. Such acts of valour are represented by Legendary Actions. To make a Legendary Action you must expend Legend Points. Legendary Actions are almost mythological happenings that can turn the tide of battle if used at just the right moment. How many Legendary Actions can be attempted during a game, and which units can make use of them are described later on. Each Legendary Action has a cost in Legend Points indicated by this symbol: X Keep track of the Legend Point total as the game progresses; you might like to use a number of dice with the total Legend Points shown on their upper facings, or use some other form of counter or marker. An army generates a number of Points of Legend at the start of the battle in the following manner: Your army generates a number of Legend Points depending on the

maximum agreed size of the army:

Up to 1000 pts D3 Legend Points Up to 1500 pts D3+1 Legend Points Up to 2000 pts D6 Legend Points For every 500 pts thereafter +1 Legend Point

Your army generates a Legend Point for each Troop Choice filled in your Force Organisation Chart.

Your army generates a Legend Point for each Signature Unit in your army. Signature units are different for each Legion and are identified in the appropriate section.

Units in an allied detachment do not generate Legend Points.

Example: A 1500 White Scar army takes a Legion Tactical squad, a Legion Tactical squad with a Deimos Rhino, a Legion Bike squad and an Attack Bike squad. This generates them a Legend Point for each of the Tactical squads, a further Legend Point for the Tactical Squad with a Deimos Rhino as that particular selection counts as a Signature Unit and a Legend Point for each of the Bike units as they too are Signature Units. Finally at the start of the battle, a D3 is rolled (see page 5 in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook for an explaination of a D3). A score of a 2 is rolled. A further Legend Point is added for the game size giving a total of 3 Legend Points. Combined with the 5 Legend Points generated from the units taken, the White Scar player has 8 Legend Points to spend throughout the battle.

Page 11: Age of the Emperor 6th Edition 40k rules update

LEGENDARY ACTIONS X Any unit with the Legendary Actions special rule listed may attempt any number of the Legendary Actions listed below and may also make any Legendary Actions listed on their unit entry. To make a Legendary Action, the unit must expend the required number of Legend Points (usually one) and then pass an unmodified Leadership test. If this is successful, apply the effect of the declared Legendary Action. A unit may make as many Legendary Actions as it wishes in a turn but may never attempt to use the same Legendary Action twice in a turn. If the attempt is failed, the Legend Point(s) expended are lost to no further effect.

X(1) LEGENDARY ACTION: DUEL

When attempting a Glorious Intervention the unit may expend one Legend Point to automatically pass the required Initiative test. Additionally, such a unit counts as charging even if they did not initiate a charge that turn.

X(1) LEGENDARY ACTION: GRACE

When attempting to move through difficult terrain the unit may expend one Legend Point to count it as open terrain instead for the duration of the Movement phase. Additionally, such a unit cannot be wounded by any failed Dangerous Terrain or Impact tests that Movement phase. Lethal Terrain remains, well, lethal!

X(1) LEGENDARY ACTION: HEROIC

At any point of any turn (including an enemy turn), the unit may expend one Legend Point to add +1 to the facing of any single die they roll with the exception of a natural roll of a 6.

X(2) LEGENDARY ACTION: SACRIFICE

The unit may expend two Legend Points to cause a wounding hit suffered by a friendly model within 6” to instead be allocated to themselves. No saves of any kind may be taken against this wound. If it causes the unit which issued the action to be slain, the army regains D3 Legend Points.

X(1) LEGENDARY ACTION: SWEEP

When held in reserve at the start of any turn, the unit making the Sweep Legendary Action may expend one Legend Point to immediately arrive from Reserve as described on page 124 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. If the unit has Outflank or Deep Strike it may deploy using those rules as normal.

X(1) LEGENDARY ACTION: TOUGH

After receiving an unsaved wound, the unit may expend one Legend Point to suffer the wound as though they had the Eternal Warrior special rule.

X(1) LEGENDARY ACTION: VALOUR

At any time in the Movement phase the unit may expend one Legend Point to cause a single broken friendly unit within 12” to instantly and automatically regroup.

CHOOSING AN ARMY Your Primary Detachments in your army must always be chosen from one of the Space Marine Legions listed in the Legio Astartes Army List found in this Expansion. If you are using two or more Primary Detachments, all of them must be from the same Legion. Furthermore, your Warlord Trait can either be randomly generated as described on page 111 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook or you may take the Legion Warlord Trait as outlined in your chosen Legion entry. In the 31st Millennium, in addition to allying with their brother Legions, the Astartes were given dominion over the Imperial Army and had binding alliances with both the Mechanicum of Mars and other, more esoteric forces. In battles this is represented by your choice of allied detachment to join your Astartes Legion. All of the usual restrictions and benefits apply as described on page 109 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. These units cannot generate Legend Points (except for determining the overall army size). Allied Detachments cannot have Warlords Traits and you may not choose the Signature Warlord Trait from your Allied Detachment for your Primary Detachment Warlord (unless they are from the same Legion of course!) The Allies Matrix on page 113 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook is not used. Instead the following Allied Detachments are permitted: Some Astartes Legions are Allies of Convenience for certain other Astartes Legions in specific eras. Details of what Legions can take them as allies and in what eras can be found under the chosen Astartes Legion section of this Expansion. The Imperial Army are Battle Brothers to all Astartes Legions, regardless of the era the battles are taking place in. To represent an Imperial Army Allied Detachment you may use Codex Imperial Guard. There are additional units available to the Imperial Army which are outlined in the Imperial Army section of this Expansion. The Martian Mechanicum are Allies of Convenience to all Astartes Legions, regardless of the era the battles are taking place in. To represent a Martian Mechanicum Allied Detachment you may use Codex Cult Mechanicus which can be freely downloaded from www.tempusfugitives.co.uk. The Chaos Daemons are Allies of Convenience for certain Astartes Legions in specific eras. Details of what Legions can take them as allies and in what eras can be found under the chosen Astartes Legion section of this Expansion. To represent a Chaos Daemons Allied Detachment you may use Codex Chaos Daemons. There are additional units available to the Chaos Daemons which are outlined in the Chaos Daemons section of this Expansion. The Agents of the Emperor are Allies of Convenience for certain Astartes Legions in specific eras. Details of what Legions can take them as allies and in what eras can be found under the chosen Astartes Legion section of this Expansion. To represent an Agents of the Emperor Allied Detachment you must refer to the Agents of the Emperor section of this Expansion.

The Agents of the Warmaster are Allies of Convenience for certain Astartes Legions in specific eras. Details of what Legions can take them as allies and in what eras can be found under the chosen Astartes Legion section of this Expansion. To represent an Agents of the Warmaster Allied Detachment you must refer to the Agents of the Warmaster section of this Expansion.

Unit Special Rules

BATTLE BROTHERS One Legion Retinue, Legion Tactical squad, Legion Terminator squad or Legion Veteran squad may be given one of the following special rules at no additional cost: Counter-Attack; Crusader; Furious Charge; Night Vision; Monster Hunter; Outflank; Stubborn; or Tank Hunters. EXPENDABLE The unit with this special rule can never count as a scoring unit or a denial unit. Furthermore it cannot benefit by the effects of a Legendary Action.

IMMOBILE A unit with this rule cannot move under any circumstances. Any special rules which force it to move will also cause the vehicle to take a single glancing hit. If an Immobile vehicle sustains a Vehicle Immobilised damage result then it loses an additional Hull Point. INTO THE FRAY If a unit with this rule arrives from Reserve by Deep Strike, the player can elect for the unit to go Into the Fray - declaring this before the deep strike scatter dice are rolled. If Into the Fray is declared, the unit cannot shoot (or run) that turn but can attempt to assault (provided they are close enough). Units wishing to assault must do so as though moving through difficult terrain. This ability cannot be used if an Independent Character has joined the unit unless they too have the Into the Fray special rule.

MAXIMUM FIRE A distinct advantage of the larger squad sizes found in the Astartes detachments during the 31st Millennium was the ability to pour an overwhelming torrent of fire into the enemy.

Any unit with the Maximum Fire rule may re-roll missed To Hit rolls when using Snap Fire. Any unit with less than ten models cannot gain any benefit from the Maximum Fire rule.

PROVEN METTLE Though the Astartes embraced new technology as it better armed them to carry out their purpose, not all such updates to their wargear necessarily made them more effective, especially when newer marks of battle plate were generally thought inferior to those crafted in a more prosperous age. Squads tended to remain faithful to proven armour marks or equip with the more modern armour and improvise around the design’s shortcomings in the field.

Any squad of more than one model which consists of models in either all of the same Mark of armour (including Indomitus or other variants of Terminator armour) or a mix of Mark II, Mark III, Mark IV, Mk V and/or Mk VI armour gain Feel No Pain (6+). It does not apply to units containing one model or units in Mk VII or Artificer Armour.

SKYFALL Models may deploy from a vehicle with this rule when it has moved more than 6”. Nominate any point over which the vehicle moved, and deploy the unit as if it were deep striking onto that point. If the unit scatters, every model in it must take a Dangerous Terrain test. Units cannot assault in the same turn that they Skyfall. TANK COMMANDER A model with this ability must start the game as commander of a single Legion vehicle of the tank type. Use a suitable marker such as a tank commander model to represent this. Any tank with a Tank Commander aboard ignores any Crew Shaken or Crew Stunned results and has a Ballistic Skill of 5. A Tank Commander may decide to leave his tank, if the tank has not moved more than 6'' that round. Place the model within 2'' of the tank. He may not move any further that round. If the tank is Wrecked or suffers an Explodes! result, make an Initiative test, if failed the Tank Commander suffers D3 wounds. If the test is passed, the Tank Commander leaps clear at the last second and instead takes a single Strength 4 hit as normal for a passenger in an enclosed vehicle. When the damage has been resolved, place him within 2" of the vehicle's hull. Once a Tank Commander has left his vehicle he may not take command of another and instead becomes an Independent Character.

WEAPONS

ASTARTES GRENADE LAUNCHER: Recon squads often employ grenade launchers. These are loaded with blind, frag and krak grenades and outfitted with adaptive targeting systems to compensate for the ‘from the hip’ style of shooting such units prefer.

Each turn the Astartes Grenade Launcher may fire one of three grenade types: AUXILIARY GRENADE LAUNCHER: A tubular device, these are primed to fire blind, frag or krak grenades in conjunction with another weapon

Each turn the Auxiliary Grenade Launcher may be fired in addition to another weapon with one of three grenade types: CHAIN AXE: Whirling diamond-steel teeth edge the axe head, making a mockery of armour and hide.

A Chain Axe has the same profile as a Chainsword. At the start of each round of combat, a model equipped with a Chain Axe may choose to wield it instead as a Heavy Chainsword. CHAINBLADE: Many Astartes Legions attach Chainblades to their Boltguns as a form of bayonet to aid in close combat. Utilising a cutting chain mechanism (similar in principle to a chainsaw) along the length of the striking edge, Chainblades are generally used in wide sweeping attacks to take advantage of the additional reach the attachment provides for maximum impact and cutting strength.

The Chainblade may only be used in the first round of an assault.

CHEM CANNON: Belching a toxic cloud of acidic poison, the Chem Cannon is favoured by the warriors of the Death Guard as well as certain brutal Imperial Army regiments.

CONVERSION BEAMER: Conversion projectors fire a beam that induces a controlled subatomic reaction in the target, converting its mass into energy. The further away the target, the more deadly the beam as it has time to grow in power.

A shot from a Conversion Beamer has a different profile depending on how far the target is from the firer. When firing the Conversion Beamer, measure the distance to the target and place the blast template. Resolve the scatter distance as normal, then measure to the centre of the blast marker from the firing model and consult the chart below to determine the effect. CROZIUS AQUILIUM: An ornate relic of the Unification Wars, the staff serves as both a staff of office and a weapon for Space Marine Lord Chaplains and the power field within can be discharged to explosive effect.

In the Shooting phase, if the model passes a successful Leadership test they may use the Crozius Aquilium as a Heavy Flamer with the Soul Blaze special rule. CROZIUS ARCANUM: A gleaming staff topped with the Imperial eagle or a Legion specific icon, incorporated within is a powerful energy field capable of disrupting matter. DEATHWIND LAUNCHER: A short range multiple rocket launcher, the Deathwind spits destruction at any enemy foolish enough to be near it. DEMOLISHER CANNON: The Demolisher Cannon is most often used in a bunker-buster role, by driving up close to enemy fortifications and firing into them at very short range, and allowing allied forces to assault through the breach. They are also used in urban areas, where they are aimed at the base of an enemy held building and fired, causing the building to collapse.

EXTERMINATOR: Favoured by the Salamanders and Word Bearers, Exterminators attach underneath Boltguns and are single burst flamethrowers.

An Exterminator can be attached to a Boltgun or Twin-linked Boltgun. It may not be attached to any other type of weapon or combi-weapon. Once per game the Exterminator may be fired instead of another weapon. Exterminators fired in Overwatch cause 1 hit rather than D3. FLAMESTORM CANNON: A large vehicle-mounted flame weapon, the heat is such that even plasteel and ceramite bubbles and blisters when caught in the searing spray. FIREFURY MISSILE BATTERY: A rapid-firing missile launcher designed to spew out its entire payload in a few seconds, saturating its target with micro warheads. FRAG CANNON: This weapon is most commonly seen on the Blood Angels Legions Dreadnoughts. Its payload is a pair of cylindrical adamantine shells, each the length of a Battle-Brother's arm. When fired, the hollow shell disintegrates into a hail of razor-sharp shards which gout forth from the cannon's mouth to shred armoured and unarmoured foes alike. GRAVITON GUN: The weapon fires a stream of particles which affects the local gravitational field of a target area, making the targeted object either far heavier or lighter depending on the weapon's setting. The gun also creates a bass rumble as the waves affect the local air pressure, causing the air to vibrate. The effect is generally non-lethal and can be used to incapacitate foes who need to be captured alive. Though some living targets will be affected more variably; a very large creature may be killed under excessive weight, but most targets will either be slowed or completely immobilised.

Each model hit by the Graviton Gun must take a Strength test or suffer a wound. Vehicles hit take a glancing hit on a roll of a 5+. After the shot has been resolved, leave a marker in place the size of a small blast template. The area is counted as difficult and dangerous terrain until the start of the next friendly turn. HAWKTALON MISSILE: This sold core warhead is designed to tear through enemy armour at range, and makes a distinctive shriek as it races through the sky. This is followed by a discernable 'crump' as it punches deep into its target before its highly explosive payload detonates.

HAVOC MISSILE LAUNCHER: Havoc Missile Launchers were the precursors of both the Cyclone Missile Launcher and the immense Havoc Missile Rack sported by the Banelord Class Titans. Due to their size they were not usually man-portable, and restricted to use on vehicles and Tactical Dreadnought Armour.

HEAVY ASSAULT CANNON: It was with the Contemptor Pattern Dreadnoughts that the Kheres patter Heavy Assault Cannon was first deployed in large numbers. A forerunner to the Absinia pattern the Kheres Heavy Assault Cannon was the weapon which first earned the dread reputation enjoyed by all Assault Cannons which followed. HEAVY CONVERSION BEAMER: These larger Conversion beam projectors are usually vehicle mounted and emit a narrow stream of waves that induces a controlled subatomic reaction in the target, converting its mass into energy. The further away the target, the more deadly the blast, as the beam has time to grow in power.

A shot from a Heavy Conversion Beamer has a different profile depending on how far the target is from the firer. When firing the Heavy Conversion Beamer, measure the distance to the target and place the large blast template. Resolve the scatter distance as normal, then measure to the centre of the large blast marker from the firing model and use the chart below to determine the effect. Firing Calibration: The Heavy Conversion Beamer may not be fired if the model carrying it has moved in the same turn, regardless of the Relentless special rule or if the carrying model is a vehicle, etc. HEAVY DEATHWIND LAUNCHER: Carrying a heavier payload, these short ranged multiple rocket launcher is usually found in Deathwind Drop Pods or in other supporting roles on the battlefield.

HOT-SHOT LAS WEAPONS: The hot-shot lasgun and hot-shot laspistol use a more powerful power supply from a backpack mounted energy cell. This allows the hot-shot weapon to project a much more powerful beam capable of penetrating even the mighty Power Armour of the Astartes. On worlds brought into compliance by the Night Lords, ownership of such a weapon is punishable by death.

LASER DESTROYER ARRAY: A powerful reactor-charged anti-tank weapon that uses multiple laser generators to fire staggered, near simultaneous blasts of energy focused on a single target point. This has the effect of boring through the densest armour in a series of powerful impacts micro-seconds apart, enabling the weapon to breach the most well-protected tank or shatter an armoured bulkhead in a single blazing volley. This weapon has no blast, but benefits from the Ordnance rule’s increased ability to penetrate armour. LAS-CUTTER: A powerful tool capable of cutting through bulkheads and armour, its comparative close range still makes for a potent weapon. In close combat the Las-Cutter can be used with the following profile:

In the Shooting phase the Las-Cutter can be used with the following profile:

MAGNA GRAPPLE: This weapon comprises a grapple and several yards of tempered adamantium chain. When fired at a vehicle, the grapple's magnetic and gravitic field generators form an unyielding bond with the target's hull, allowing the wielder to 'drag' its prey closer.

If the Magna-Grapple shot hits a vehicle and the target is not destroyed, roll a D6 and add 8 to the score. If the result is lower than the target's highest armour value, nothing happens - the wielder doesn't have the leverage to reel the vehicle in. If the result is equal to or higher than the target's highest armour value, the wielder hauls the grapple in, dragging the vehicle with it. Move the vehicle 2D6" directly towards the wielding model. The target does not change facing and will stop if it comes to within 1 " of difficult terrain, impassable terrain, another vehicle (friendly or enemy) or a unit locked in close combat. Treat any non-vehicle unit the target moves over as having been tank-shocked. Once the drag has been completed, the wielder releases the grapple - if the target survives the ensuing assault phase, it will be able to move normally in its next turn. MAGNA-MELTA CANNON: The Magna-melta is a heavy, short-ranged, area effect heat cannon originally designed for use on boarding torpedoes and assaults rams in brutal star-ship assaults, and is capable of reducing large volumes of armour and hull into molten slag in mere moments. Patterns of Magna-melta compact enough to be fitted to tanks and armoured vehicles make for devastating anti-tank and siege weapons.

MELTA CANNON: The Melta Cannon is a large vehicle-mounted Melta weapon, able to destroy several targets at once. The Imperial Army use the weapon on Hellhound variants while the Astartes have been known to deploy it on Contemptor Pattern Dreadnoughts. MISSILE LAUNCHER: Multiple warhead types make the Missile Launcher the most flexible man-portable heavy weapon the Astartes can bring to bear.

Each turn the Missile Launcher may fire one of three missile types: MOLE MORTAR: Used both by tunnel-fighting units as well as support teams on the surface, the Mole Mortar can be easily launched through the air to burrow once more beneath the ground to close on its target undetected.

Tremors: Any unit hit by the Mole Mortar will move as in difficult terrain until the next friendly turn. If the affected unit is already in difficult terrain then it rolls one less dice than normal to determine its maximum move. A vehicle hit by a Tremor must take a dangerous terrain test if it moves in the following Movement phase. This even applies to skimmers whose delicate grav-engines are pummelled by shockwaves. NEEDLER: The Needler (or more formally the needle pistol) is a silent and deadly weapon that uses both laser power and poisoned needles. The weapon fires a laser bolt like the lasgun, but, a millisecond after, it fires the needle. The bolt melts and cuts through armour, leaving the target vulnerable for the needle, which knocks out or kills the target. NEUTRON LASER PROJECTOR: An example of the formidable technology that the Mechanicum can wield, the Neutron Laser Projector is rarely seen outside of the Forgeworlds of the Omnissiah. The pulse of the neutron laser overwhelms vehicle systems and electronics.

Any vehicle hit by a Neutron Laser suffers an automatic Crew Stunned result in addition to any damage caused normally by the weapon.

NULL ROD: This obsidian rod perpetually crackles with disruptive energy, nullifying the warp powers of the Legion’s enemies.

The Null Rod is AP2 when used against models with the Psyker or Daemon special rule. Furthermore the wielder confers +3 to any Deny the Witch attempts made by friendly units within 6”. ORTHRUS GRENADE LAUNCHER: Incorporating a range of short-fused flash and concussion grenades to stun enemy prior to an assault, the Orthrus Grenade Launcher is the favoured tool of Legions who prefer close range and reconnaissance.

The Orthrus Grenade Launcher may always be fired in the Shooting Phase and in addition to any other weapons and against a different target to other weapons fired. PLASMA BLASTER: Crafted exclusively by the machine-city known as the Triad on the Forgeworld of Ryza, the Plasma Blaster is a ferocious development in plasma technology that is barely understood by Magos on other Forgeworlds. It is a rare weapon amongst the Astartes.

PLASMA CUTTER: More of a tool than a weapon, the Plasma Cutter can still be used as a lethal armament at a push and is as capable at rending armour as it is repairing it.

PUNISHER GATLING CANNON: Lacking the penetrative power of the Heavy Assault Cannon, this contemporary was felt to be too ammunition hungry for extensive deployment amongst the Astartes Legions. Not all Primarchs agree…

QUAD LASCANNON: A powerful array of laser weapons, the Quad Lascannon requires a significant power supply to maintain its fierce rate of fire.

RELIC BLADE: A Relic Blade is a large two handed power weapon often resembling a sword, axe or glaive that is surrounded by the same energy field as other Power Weapons. They are large and unwieldy in combat required to be wielded two-handed by all but the most skilled user.

SONIC WEAPONRY Devotion to Slaanesh has led to the creation of weapons that speak to the distorted souls of the Dark Prince’s followers. All sonic weaponry ignores cover, causes pinning and has the Rending special rule.

SKYSHATTER CANNON: These four barrelled weapon systems exchange precision targeting systems for sheer weight of fire. Ideally suited for saturating an area containing fast moving units such as aircraft or skimmers the Skyshatter Cannon has also proven remarkably effective against high speed bike units and fast moving xenos beasts. STORMFURY MISSILE POD: This multiple missile launcher contains a sophisticated payload system which can prime dozens of short fused Fragmentation warheads to explode in a synchronised cacophony of incendiary death over a wide area or saturate the sky to shred enemy aircraft.

Each turn the Stormfury may fire one of three missile types: THUNDERER CANNON: Designed to stun dug in infantry prior to a charge by Legion Assault troops, the Thunderer Cannon is a favourite amongst many Legions. THUNDERFIRE CANNON: A large, heavily tracked artillery piece, the Thunderfire Cannon is favoured by the Astartes for its versatile firing patterns.

Each turn the Thunderfire Cannon may be fired in one of three ways. For the ‘Tremors’ effect, see the Mole Mortar weapon rules:

VANQUISHER CANNON: This long ranged Battlecannon fires specially primed anti-armour shells. VIPER QUAD LAUNCHER: The viper pattern quad launcher shoots rapidly, its multiple barrels pumping in and out as each shell fires in succession with a distinctive "thud-thud-thud-thud" noise, leading to the common name of thudd gun. Each barrel is fed by a separate magazine of ammunition, giving the weapon a high rate of fire. Although extremely heavy weapons, they are easily moved due to being mounted on a small robotic tractor unit, articulated legs pistons or else mounted on the Land Raider Achilles.

EQUIPMENT

AUGURY WEB: The sophisticated scanners and cognis-interpreters of an Augury Web are built into the structure of vehicles during their construction. On the battlefield these augurs can be used both to scan enemy positions in extraordinary detail, allowing enemy movements to be thwarted, or reinforcements to be called in with uncanny accuracy.

While the unit is on the table, at the start of any of the owning player’s turns, before any Reserve rolls are made, they may declare that the Augury Web is being used in either Disruption or Relay modes, their effect lasting until the start of the next player turn. •Disruption Mode: The opposing force suffers -1 to their Reserve rolls. •Relay Mode: The owning player’s Reserve rolls may be re-rolled

(whether failed or successful!) if they wish. In addition, enemy units using the Infiltrate special rule to deploy may not be placed within 24" of a unit with an Augury Web which itself has already been deployed (this has no other effect on the deployment of enemy units).

ATOMANTIC SHIELDING: One of the marvels of the Mechanicum’s armoury is the distinctive curved features of the defensive field generators powered by the potent Atomantic power reactor. This can repel incoming strikes at the molecular level, turning aside explosions, laser weapons and even melee attacks.

Vehicles with Atomantic Shielding have an Invulnerable save of 5+ against shooting attacks and explosions, and an Invulnerable save of 6+ against attacks suffered in assault. So potent is the Atomantic reactor that if the vehicle suffers a ‘Vehicle Explodes’ damage result, add +1" to the radius of the blast.

BATTLEFIELD COMMAND UPLINK: A complex package of logic engines, Auspex, surveyors and other auguries make for a wealth of data that can aid an experienced commander in developing strategy but can easily overwhelm others.

The use of a Battlefield Command Uplink counts as shooting a weapon for the model carrying it. A unit within 8” of the model equipped with the uplink counts as having a Ballistic Skill of 5 for the remainder of the Shooting phase provided the target it shoots at is in line of sight for both the model with the Battlefield Command Uplink and the shooting unit. Declare that the uplink is being used before any rolls to hit are made. The Battlefield Command Uplink cannot be used with Snap Shots. The Ballistic Skill 5 cannot be improved in any way.

BULLOCK MK XIV JET-CYCLE: Soaring high above the battlefield, an Astartes Legion can dominate the skies when properly resourced. A key part of this is the deployment of Bullock Mk XIV Jet-Cycles. Using powerful gravitic drives and an advanced auto-flight system these jet bikes can bring Astartes vengeance to a precise location unlike any other asset at a Legion’s command. Models equipped with a Bullock Mk XIV Jet-Cycles follow all of the rules for Jetbikes as described on page 45 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. Bullock Mk XIV Jet-Cycles are fitted with a twin-linked bolter.

CAMELEOLINE CLOAK: Astartes Recon squads and other Reconnaissance forces are commonly equipped with loose garments interwoven with cameleoline, a light-absorbing material that imitate surrounding terrain. So garbed, units are almost impossible to see at long distance, and make for difficult targets when in cover of any kind.

Models with a Cameleoline Cloak gain the Stealth special rule. Models that already have Stealth instead gain Shrouding.

CERAMITE PLATING: Layers of ceramite give the vehicle a degree of protection against extreme heat from atmospheric flight and equally against certain heat based attacks

A vehicle given Ceramite Plating is not subject to the additional +D6 to armour penetration of attacks made against it that have the Melta special rule or are Melta Bombs.

CYBER ALTERED TASK UNIT: C.A.T. units are small crawler mounted devices utilised by Astartes frontline units where their tracking and monitoring augers and unremarkable size make them ideal for scouting out enemy weak points.

Whenever a model equipped with a C.A.T. is deployed, you may place a C.A.T. marker anywhere on the battlefield. This marker must be smaller than a Legion Marine model and cannot be destroyed. Enemy units may not use their infiltrate rule to deploy within 18" of a C.A.T. marker. Should the owning character or his unit make a shooting attack at a target that has line of sight to the C.A.T. marker, they receive +1 to their Ballistic Skill. If a character with a C.A.T. is slain, the C.A.T. self destructs and is removed too.

DIGITAL WEAPONS: These concealed lasers are fitted into finger augmentics or even an entirely artificial hand or the knuckles of a glove. They lack the power to be used at range, but can be triggered in close combat to take advantage of an exposed weakness while the enemy fends off the main attack.

A model armed with digital weapons can re-roll a single failed roll to wound in each Assault phase.

FERROMANTIC FORTITUDE: The Martian Mechanicum uses many of their technological secrets as currency in securing favourable agreements with the Imperium. One of those is the secret of Ferromantic Fortitude. With it the hull of a vehicle is specially constructed to resist even the most determined assault and is almost preternaturally resilient.

A vehicle crafted with Ferromantic Fortitude is not subject to the particular additional effects of attacks made against it that have the Lance or Armourbane special rules.

FIRE WASP CONTROLLER: A Fire Wasp is an Astartes combat robot used in when storming bunkers or other fortified positions to venture ahead of assault parties and help cleat them a path. Sent in ahead of a squad and intended to trip mines and other booby traps, the Fire Wasp robot is an exceptionally resilient if poor in actual combat. Most are equipped with flamers and searchlights to aid their task.

Fire Wasps are separate models with their own profile (see below) and the unit type 'infantry'. If one or more models in a unit have a Fire Wasp Controller (usually a wrist mounted device) the unit is joined by a single

Page 22: Age of the Emperor 6th Edition 40k rules update

14

Fire Wasp robot regardless of the number of controllers in the unit. A Fire Wasp can never leave the unit. If all controllers in the unit are slain, the robot goes inert and is removed too. A Fire Wasp is equipped with a Flamer and provides the controller’s unit with the Move Through Cover and Night Vision special rules. Fire Wasps are Fearless and Bulky. Once per game, successful Overwatch hits against the Fire Wasp’s unit must be re-rolled. The Fire Wasp is destroyed once this re-roll has been made.

FOEBLASTER AMMO: It is understood that the ammunition known colloquially as Foeblaster was originally intended to be the standard ammunition for the Ferrox pattern boltgun. Unfortunately, shortages in the field and the loss of many of the manufacturing sites would see these potent miniature warheads limited to ranking officers and campaign veterans who have been able to secure a cache or two in their theatre.

All Boltgun-type weapons (see page 56 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook) are a minimum of Strength 5 when used by models with Foeblaster Ammo.

FRAG ASSAULT LAUNCHERS: The hulls of some Legion assault transports are studded with explosive charges designed to hurl shrapnel at the enemy as the troops inside charge out.

Any unit charging into close combat on the same turn as it disembarks from a vehicle with Frag Assault Launchers counts as using assault grenades.

GRAV CHUTE: A Grav Chute is a pack-sized suspensor allowing troops to float safely to the ground from any height. It operates via suspensor fields that counter gravity and two small jets on either side of the shoulders that offer further braking of descent.

Units equipped with grav chutes entering play as reserves may enter using the deep strike rules. Unless a ‘hit’ is rolled on the scatter dice, treat the unit as though landing in dangerous terrain.

HEAT SEEKER: Many objects such as aircraft engines generate and retain heat, and as such, are especially visible in the infra-red wavelengths of light compared to objects in the background. Heat Seeker is a passive missile guidance system which uses these emissions to track and follow a target.

A missile weapon with this upgrade can re-roll all failed roll To Hit against Flyers, Skimmers and units that have made a Turbo-Boost move.

HELICAL TARGETING ARRAY: Complex mathematical cogitators and a predictive machine spirit enable this device to calculate the trajectory of even the most randomly jinking enemy aircraft or flying beast.

Models with a Helical Targeting Array who remain stationary in the Movement Phase gain the Interceptor and Skyfire special rules for all of their weapons.

HERALDIC BACK BANNER: Proudly displaying both the Legion heraldry alongside the heroic deeds and battle honours of the squad or individual, Back Banners are an important symbol for the Astartes. The banner itself is usually

stored in a compartment within the Power Armour backpack. Via a neural link, the banner pole then telescopically extends from the compartment, the banner unfurling as it does so.

While a unit contains a model with a Heraldic Back Banner may re-roll failed Morale and Pinning tests and has the Adamantium Will special rule.

HERALDIC BATTLE STANDARD: Scenes from the detachment or hero’s history are woven into proudly displayed Battle Standards. Carried on long adamantium poles by a member of a champion’s retinue, these are rallying points for a detachment or company to gather around and while they remain aloft, no foe can conquer the Astartes spirit or thirst for valour.

All friendly Astartes Legion units within 12" of the banner bearer are Stubborn.

HERALDIC LEGION STANDARD: Much prestige and distinction is bestowed upon those called to carry the Legion Banner but such duty is incredibly perilous. Nonetheless, it is unheard of for a member of the Primarch’s Honour Guard to refuse. The Heraldic Legion Standard encompasses the honour of the Legion and to all Astartes; the honour of the Legion outweighs the mortal existence of the Honour Guard.

All friendly Astartes Legion units within 12" of the banner bearer re-roll failed Morale and Pinning Tests. Each Heraldic Legion Standard has a specific additional benefit detailed in the appropriate Legion section of this Expansion. ILLUM FLARES: The unit carries a stock of powerful, fast burning chemical flares to illuminate even the darkest battlefield.

A vehicle equipped with Illum Flares may drop a single flare per turn. They are fired in the same manner as Bombs (see page 81 at the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook), placing a marker where the flare lands after It has scattered.

Leave the marker in place until the end of the turn. Any unit targeting an enemy unit within 12” of the Flare marker gains the Night Vision rule for that Shooting phase while firing at units with at least one model within 12” the Flare marker.

JUMP PACK: A relatively new piece of technology which enables the wearer to make great bounding leaps across the battlefield or even to fly short distances. The Astartes Raptor squads are literally Angels of Death when equipped with these powerful devices as they can be dropped from low-flying Storm Birds using their jump packs to swoop down on to the battlefield.

Models equipped with jump packs are Jump Infantry, as described on page 47 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook.

LOCATOR BEACON: Essentially a signalling package containing a teleport homer, broad-spectrum communicators and geo positional tracking. When activated, the locator beacon uploads detailed positional information to the Astartes Tactical Grid, allowing precision reinforcement by reserve forces.

1f a unit wishes to arrive on the battlefield via deep strike and chooses to do so within 6” of a model carrying a Locator Beacon, then it does not scatter. Note that the locator beacon must already be on the table at the start of the turn for it to be used.

Page 23: Age of the Emperor 6th Edition 40k rules update

15

MISERICORDE: The hull of the some vehicles contains a heavily armoured compartment fitted with multiple retractable inertial suppression clamps which lock transported troops in place and protect them from impact in individual alcoves.

Models transported aboard a vehicle with a Misericorde are not affected by Crew Shaken or Crew Stunned results on the vehicle damage chart although the vehicle itself is still affected. Furthermore these compartmentalised alcoves allow the vehicle to ignore the Bulky special rule when determining its transport capacity. Models that are Very Bulky or Extremely Bulky, however, cannot be transported in a vehicle fitted with a Misericorde. NARTHECIUM: A Legion Apothecary's medical field kit, the Narthecium contains all the necessary tools to treat wounded Astartes and get them back into action as quickly as possible. Included in the standard kit are anti-venoms; stim-packs; healing agents; sterile clay for sealing wounds; a carnifex for euthanizing fatally injured Marines; and reductor: a tool for extracting the progenoid organs (gene-seed) from the fallen.

Models in a unit containing a Narthecium gain the Feel No Pain rule. You cannot gain an extra attack for having two close combat weapons if your wargear includes a Storm Shield.

NEURAL FIBRE-BUNDLES: Originally developed as part of the Battle Armour Dreadnought STC (itself an offshoot of the Knight Household’s walker technology), this marvel closely attunes the pilot to his warmachine and provides the ability to redistribute connections to damaged systems and maintain their fighting ability.

A model with Neural Fibre Bundles has the It Will Not Die special rule.

SERVO-ARM: Techmarines and Servitors are often equipped with powerful servo arms that can be used for battlefield repairs or even put to use as a weapon.

Each Servo-arm grants the model a single extra close combat attack, made separately with the following profile:

SIEGE SHIELD: An enormous bulldozer blade, the Siege Shield allows a vehicle to shoulder aside debris and wreckage without risk of harm.

A vehicle with a Siege Shield automatically passes dangerous terrain checks and gains +1 to ram checks where the front armour facing is used.

SIGNUM: A Signum is a special form of communication device that can access a myriad of useful targeting data, allowing a more accurate concentration of fire.

A model can use a Signum in the Shooting phase. The use of a Signum counts as shooting a weapon for the model carrying it. Once used, one model in the unit or one weapon on the vehicle the model is embarked on is Ballistic Skill 5 for the remainder of the Shooting phase. Declare that the Signum is being used before any rolls to hit are made. The Signum cannot be used with Snap Shots. The Ballistic Skill 5 cannot be improved in any way.

STORM SHIELD: A power shield used by the Astartes, the Storm Shield is a more advanced and bulky version of the Combat Shield, providing better defence. However it is also much larger and requires use of one hand, preventing the use of two weapons. Different Legions style their shields in different ways; the Night Lords for example, prefer a plain shield mounted with the skin of their enemies, the flesh sizzling in the power field merely adding to the imagery. When the generator is activated the shield shimmers with blue energy and when struck it emits crackling lightning, which gives it its name.

Models equipped with Storm Shields gain a 3+ Invulnerable save. You cannot gain an extra attack for having two close combat weapons if your wargear includes a Storm Shield. VINCENT BLACKSHADOW BIKE: As befitting a steed fit for an Astartes, the Vincent Blackshadow is fitted with powerful engines and bulletproof tyres. Each bike is a versatile fighting platform capable of firing its armament on the move and launching devastating charges into combat.

Models equipped with a Vincent Blackshadow Bikes follow all of the rules for Bikes as described on page 45 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. Vincent Blackshadow Bikes are fitted with a twin-linked bolter.

ARMOUR

ARTIFICER ARMOUR: A masterwork of engineering sourced with the best materials available, Artificer Armour offers protection and mobility second only to the fabulous armour of the Primarchs. Examples of an early version of the later introduced Mark VIII ‘Errant Armour’ have been found dating from this era with the distinctive adaptations to the torso and gorget, however widespread deployment of this difficult to manufacture armour did not come into use until long after the Age of the Emperor.

The armour provides the wearer with a 2+ armour save. POWER ARMOUR: Power armour has been in use since before the Age of the Emperor, from the techno-barbarians of Terra to the original Space Marines created by the Emperor. Over the history of the Imperium, Power Armour has developed into many different forms. Need, circumstances and recovery of new materials and technology has shaped the armour's evolution.

Power Armour is worn primarily by the Space Marines and the Adeptus Custodes. It is a completely enclosed suit of armour, made of thick ceramite plates. The armour would be heavy and cumbersome to wear but for the electrically motivated fibre bundles within the armour that replicates the wearer's movement and enhances his strength. The advanced systems of Space Marine Power Armour also monitor the Marine's biological functions, feeding the medical information to the Marine. The backpack contains the main power plant, environmental system and additional stabilizers. Power armour is fully sealed, isolating the wearer from the outside environment and protecting him from gas weapons and harsh atmospheres. It also commonly includes numerous auxiliary systems such as communicators and auto-senses. Power Armour of all Marks provides a 3+ Armour Save

Mark I Power Armour “Thunder Armour” When the Emperor began the conquest of Terra, the proto-Space Marines which formed part of his retinue were armoured in the same way as the warriors of the other warlords. A thunderbolt and lightning symbol was displayed on the breastplate of warriors loyal to the Emperor - this was the personal badge of the Emperor in those days, predating the Imperial Aquila which only became the symbol of the Imperium much later. The emblem gives the suit its common name – Thunder Armour. Thunder Armour was not an enclosing suit and offered no life support functions, being unnecessary while the fighting was confined to Terra. The main part of the armour is the massive powered torso which encloses the chest and arms. Coiled energy cables beneath the armour plating transmit power from the power pack on the back to the arms, greatly increasing physical strength. Though the men that wore this armour were usually not full Astartes but their genetic forefathers, performance was instead enhanced by copious combat drugs and mental conditioning.

Mark II Power Armour “Crusade Armour” After the conquest of the main planets of the Solar system, the factories on Mars were set to work constructing a new type of armour for the Emperor's elite Space Marines. This armoured suit is commonly referred to as Crusade Armour, since it was designed with the planned Great Crusade in mind. It was the first fully enclosed Power Armour, making it suitable for conquest of space. The Crusade Armour is fully plated, and the legs are also Power Armoured. The plates are arranged into articulated hoops, for increased manoeuvrability. The chest coils, which were kept on the outside of the armour plating on Mark 1 armour for cooling purposes, have now been placed on the inside of the chest plates, so that they are better protected, thanks to more efficient cooling mechanisms. The back pack is roughly the same size as that on the Mark 1 armour, but is much more efficient, and also includes extra life support, air recycling and fluid recovery equipment, as well as automated medical devices that have remained a part of Space Marine armour ever since.

The helmet in Mk II armour is the first to be fitted with automatic sensory devices developed on Mars, this allows the wearer to see and hear as though not wearing a helmet, and, since all information is transmitted to a computer in the helmet before being transmitted directly to the wearer's brain via neural link, blinding lights and deafening noises can be muted so that they don't harm the wearer. The wearer is also able to see in the infra-red and ultra-violet spectrum, and images can be zoomed in and magnified.

Mark III Power Armour “Iron Armour” Mark III was never intended to replace the Mark II but to provide a specialized suit with heavier frontal protection reduced weight of the rear armour to compensate. The suit uses a heavy armoured helmet with sloping plates designed to deflect shots to the left and right. In Mark III and later versions the helmet is no longer fixed, but moves with the wearer's head. This represented the constructors’ increasing experience with neural connector gear and the new materials which flooded into the Martian workshops as the Great Crusade progressed. The helmet inspired the Mark IV and VI helmet designs. While successful in the conditions it was designed for - particularly, tunnel fighting and boarding actions - the armour is too clumsy and uncomfortable for conventional fighting. As the most visually brutal of all Marine armour, it is sometimes worn by ceremonial guards. It is commonly called the Iron Suit or Armorum Ferrum in recognition of its great strength.

Mark IV Power Armour “Maximus Armour” Towards the end of the Great Crusade the Space Marines found their armour wearing out. While some Legions chose to continue local production and maintenance, the Martian Mechanicum started design new variant, which was to be the Mark IV or Imperial Maximus suit. The most distinguishing change over the Mark II was the abandonment of the separate abutting plates in favour of larger inflexible armour casings incorporating flexible joints. This marginally reduced mobility but was far easier to produce and maintain. Technical secrets recovered from empires such as the Interex allowed Mars to develop the more efficient armour, improving the quality of protection and reducing the suit's weight at the same time. Improved armouring of the power cables allowed the main arm and chest supply to be safely relocated to the exterior of the armour, while the use of new material reduced the size and number of cables.

Mark V Power Armour “Heresy Armour” Mark IV armour was envisioned at the time to be the ultimate and final type of Space Marine armour, able to offer the best protection in a variety of conditions. However, the equipping of the Legions was only partially complete when the Horus Heresy broke out. Many of the newly equipped Legions turned against the Imperium while many loyal Legions had old style armour. With war damage and mobile operations, resupply for damaged equipment was difficult or impossible. Marine artificers and Techmarines had to use old style equipment from older models to keep the Legions fighting. The Mark V is commonly called the Heresy Suit. The external design of the Mark V helmet would serve as the template for the Mark VII design, although internally the two are significantly different.

Mark VI Power Armour “Corvus Armour” At the end of production of the Mark IV type a long term research project began to replace the existing Power Armour. This lead to the production of the Mark VI Corvus Suit as a stopgap measure using a mixture of new and old features. Similar to the studs found on the Mark V, this pattern is distinguished by a studded left shoulder plate These studs are the top of Bolts which attach each layer of the armour to one another.

Corvus armour has come to be associated with the Siege of Terra due to the extensive use of Mark VI armour by the Blood Angels, White Scars and Imperial Fists during that dark time. In particular Mark VI armour symbolises the sacrifice of the First Founding Astartes loyal to the Emperor in the face of Horus and his forces.

Mark VII Power Armour “Aquila (Eagle) Armour” Mark VII armour was developed during the Horus Heresy, and represents the final major development of Mark VI armour. While the final battle for Mars was underway, the Imperium realised the planet would eventually be lost. Armour development teams were transferred to Terra to continue, incorporating their latest work into the armour type that would become Mark VII. Main improvements to this armour are the newly designed plastron which covers the chest and arm cabling. The chest bears the Imperial Eagle, giving the armour its common name of Armorum Impetor, or Eagle Armour. This mark abandons the studded shoulder armour plate, and replaces the helmet. As Mark VII is a development of Mark VI, both have a great deal in common, and parts from one mark are readily interchangeable with parts from the other.

RECON ARMOUR: Formed of thick plates of carapace armour, Recon armour is easily capable of stopping a bullet. Less cumbersome than Power Armour, Recon armour is ideal for infiltration work and allows a greater freedom of motion. The fatigues that form a woven underlay to the layered carapace armour are made of ballistic nylon which gives further protection without reducing the marine’s movement.

Recon Armour provides a 4+ armour save and a unit wearing Recon armour gains the Scout and the Move Through Cover special rules. If the model is mounted on a Vincent Blackshadow Bike or Bullock Mk XIV Jet-Cycle it instead gains the Scout and Skilled Rider special rules.

PRIMARCH ARMOUR: The artifice incorporated into the armour of the Primarchs is designed by the Emperor himself and are such works of majesty and refinement that all but the most determined of attacks is turned aside.

The armour provides a 1+ armour save (remembering that a roll of a 1 is always a failure) and a 4+ Invulnerable save. They may always start the game in reserve and arrive using the Deep Strike rules. Models in Primarch Armour gain the Very Bulky special rule.

TERMINATOR ARMOUR: Terminator armour is the best protection a Space Marine can be equipped with. It is even said that Terminator armour can withstand the titanic energies at a Plasma generator's core, and that this was in fact the armour's original purpose. Terminator armour was developed during the Great Crusade as a tactical blend of Dreadnought armour, standard Marine Power Armour and heavy suits used by engineers working in the most hostile environments (such as micro-debris-plagued orbits or the radioactive engine cores of stellar frigates). It was first intended to provide heavy armour and firepower to troops fighting in cramped battle zones, such as the claustrophobic tunnels of hive worlds and Space Hulks which are too confined for Dreadnoughts or vehicles.

Several designs of Terminator armour evolved in parallel from the forge worlds of the Mechanicum and the armouries of the Marines. Often bearing little physical resemblance to each other, these different exo-armour suits in fact have much in common. Massively armoured, sealed against any external conditions and incorporating their own armament, Terminator armour designs proved their worth from the first. Like Power Armour, the suits were equipped with fibre-bundle muscles and imposed few movement restrictions upon the wearer, despite their immense weight.

Indomitus Tactical Dreadnought Armour Due to the powerful exoskeleton and power sources built into their armour, models in Terminator armour have the Relentless universal special rule. However, this armour is somewhat cumbersome, so Terminators cannot perform a Sweeping Advance. A model wearing Terminator armour has a 2+ armour save and a 5+ invulnerable save thanks to a combination of refractor fields and slabs of plasteel and ceramite. Any model wearing Terminator armour can be teleported onto the battlefield. They may always start the game in reserve and arrive using the Deep Strike rules, even if it is not part of the mission being played. Models in Terminator Armour gain the Bulky special rule Cataphract Tactical Dreadnought Armour A precursor to the more technologically advanced Indomitus pattern Tactical Dreadnought armour, Cataphract armour transforms a Space Marine into a walking tank. Designed for fire support and close quarter fighting Cataphract armour is capable of withstanding almost any attack and some have inbuilt medicae tools in the rare case that it cannot. The Cataphract armour does have several drawbacks that ultimately led to it being replaced with Tactical Dreadnought armour by most frontline units. Because of its large size and overtaxed servos it does not perform particularly well in confined spaces or against more recent developments in fusion weaponry such as the dreaded Meltagun.

Cataphract Armour is identical in game terms to Indomitus Terminator armour. However if their armour includes the medicae tools, a unit in Cataphract Armour gains Feel No Pain special rule. The Medicae Tools upgrade costs +5pts per model. Prototype Tactical Dreadnought Armour During the turmoil of the Horus Heresy, Artificers relied on refined designs of armour first used by the II and XI Legions but since only found in limited numbers amongst XIII. A cursory glance reveals that it is made for frontal protection. The huge shoulder pads and sunken helm afford maximum defence from enemy fire. Such was the bulk of the armour that all necessary cabling is very prominent. Each tube contains multiple cooling ducts and fibre bundle relays with those on the shoulders containing prototype refractor field generator coils. The disk on the left shoulder pad was where the Legion icon was displayed.

Prototype Tactical Dreadnought Armour is identical in game terms to Indomitus Terminator armour.

Tartaros Tactical Dreadnought Armour Of the patterns of Terminator armour, the Indomitus pattern is perhaps the most widespread, due to its template being held on key Forge Worlds such as Mars. Comparable protection is offered by Tartaros Pattern Terminator armour and it is commonly issued to the veterans of a Legion’s 1st Company. Perhaps the most advanced form of Tactical Dreadnought Armour, the Tartaros pattern shares many systems with the MkIV ‘Maximus’ pattern of power armour, and when the full suite of fibre bundles are used, provides greater mobility for its wearer than the Indomitus pattern with no loss in durability or protection.

Tartaros Terminator Armour is identical in game terms to Indomitus Terminator armour. However if their armour includes additional fibre bundles a unit in Tartaros Terminator Armour can still perform Sweeping Advances. The Fibre Bundles cost +1pt per model. Legion Variant Tactical Dreadnought Armour Many veterans make minor modifications to their Tactical Dreadnought Armour in line with the doctrines and aesthetic of their Legion. Such alterations do not present a loss in durability or protection for the wearer but usually hold a psychological value both to allied and enemy units. For some Legions, such as the Ultramarines, only the smallest personalisation is permitted (for example campaign medals) while others such as the World Eaters pictured here make such massive alterations that the silhouette of the armour changes significantly and during the Great Crusade the Astartes Tactical Grid had to be updated to prevent other Legions mistaking them for an enemy.

Legion Variant Terminator Armour is identical in game terms to Indomitus Terminator armour.

ASTARTES LEGION ARMY LIST

The twenty Space Marine Legions, also known as the Legiones Astartes, were created by the Emperor to take part in the Great Crusade. All the Space Marines of a Legion were modified with help of the DNA samples of a single Primarch. As a Primarch was found, he would receive the command of his respective Legion. His homeworld would also become the new homeworld of the Legion itself. The Legions were massive armies, and the size of each could vary tremendously. A precise number was never truly achieved and maintained. Even during the Great Crusade, some Legions were very numerous, while others were not. The numbers would always vary with new recruits and inevitable battle-losses, and also important were the availability of potential recruits and the administrative skills of the Primarch and his officers. Despite these differences there were three blocks of infantry common to almost all of the Legions: the Tactical, Devastator and Assault Squads. They would evolve over the millennia but this triumvirate would survive in varying forms for over ten thousand years. The following army list enables you to field an Astartes Legion army and fight battles using the Eternal War missions and other scenarios included in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook and Expansions.

USING THE ARMY LIST The Astartes Legion army list is split into nine sections: HQ, Troops, Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support. All of the squads, vehicles and characters in the army are placed into one of these sections depending upon their role on the battlefield or their allegiance. Each model is also given a points value, which varies depending on how effective that model is in battle. Before you choose an army, you will need to agree with your opponent upon the type of game you are going to play and them maximum total number of points each of you will spend. Then you can proceed to pick your army. USING THE FORCE ORGANISATION CHART The army list is used in conjunction with one or more force organisation charts from a mission to be played. Each chart is split into five categories that correspond to the sections in the army list, and each category has one or more boxes. Each greytoned box indicates that you may make one choice from that section of the army list, while a dark-toned box indicates a compulsory selection. ETERNAL WAR MISSIONS

ARMY LIST ENTRIES Each entry in the army list represents a different unit. Each unit entry in the Astartes Legion army list is split into several sections:

Unit Name: At the start of each army list entry you will find the name of the unit alongside the points cost of the unit without any upgrades. Unit Profile: This section will show the profile of any models the unit can include. Unit Composition: Where applicable, this section will show the number and type of models that make up the unit, before any upgrades are taken. If the Unit Composition includes the word 'Unique', then you may only include one of this unit in your army. Unit Type: This refers to the Warhammer 40,000 Unit Type Rules chapter. For example, a unit may be classed as infantry, vehicle or cavalry, which will subject it to a number of rules regarding movement, shooting, assault, etc. Wargear: This section details the weapons and equipment the models in the unit are armed with. The cost for all these models and their equipment is included in the points cost listed next to the unit name. Special Rules: Any special rules that apply to the models in the unit are listed here. These special rules are presented in the unit entry or explained in further detail in either the Special Rules section of this Expansion, the Special Rules section of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook. Dedicated Transport: Where applicable, this section refers to any transport vehicles the unit may take. These dedicated transports will always be found within their own section of the army list. The Vehicles section of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook explains how these dedicated transport vehicles work. Options: This section lists all of the upgrades you may add to the unit if you wish to do so alongside the associated points cost for each. Where an option states that you may exchange one weapon 'and/or' another, you may replace either, neither or both provided you pay the points cost.

DEDICATED TRANSPORTS Most Astartes Legion infantry units include a Transport option, allowing a vehicle to be selected together with the unit. These Dedicated Transports do not use up a slot on the force organisation chart (see page 109 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook). Other vehicles may also have a Transport Capacity, but they are chosen separately as normal and occupy a force organisation chart slot of their own. The only limitation of a Dedicated Transport is that when it is deployed, it can only carry the unit it was selected with (plus any Independent Characters that have joined it). After the game begins, it can then Transport any friendly unit, subject to Transport Capacity and other special exclusions, as explained in the vehicle's entry.

Legion Rhino Deimos 40 PTS

The Rhino has been in service throughout the history of the Imperium. As a Standard Template Construct vehicle, the Rhino dates back to the distant time of Mankind's initial colonisation of the galaxy. Originally named "RH-1-N-0 Tracked Exploration and Multi-Purpose Defence Vehicle," it was used to explore newly colonised worlds. First field-tested on Mars, the Rhino as it came to be known was a success, thanks to its extreme dependability and capability of being produced from any locally available material, as well as make use of any semi-combustible fuel source. The most common Rhino pattern is the Deimos, which was produced in such volume that even though these machines are no longer constructed in significant numbers almost all deployed examples are of this pattern. Recent manufacture from Mars is of the Mk IIc design which when compared to the current Deimos pattern, the MkIIc's drive and engine system is less powerful but more robust, with an improved redundancy.

Unit Composition • 1 Legion Rhino Deimos Unit Type • Vehicle (Fast Tank)

Legion Drop Pod 35 PTS The Drop Pods of the Adeptus Astartes look and work similarly to a ship's Life Pod and usually carry ten Astartes. They are launched from a vessel in low orbit towards the drop zone, usually amidst or near a battle field. Once launched, they plummet through the atmosphere until retro jets fire to slow their descent. A machine spirit guides the Pod to its destination and can receive further commands from the mother ship. Although the Pods become immobile after having landed they can be recovered by the Legion's Techmarines and reused.

Drop Pod Assault: Drop Pods always enter play using the Deep Strike special rules. At the beginning of your first turn, you must choose half of your Drop Pods (rounding up) to make a 'Drop Pod Assault'. Units making a Drop Pod Assault arrive on the player's first turn. The arrival of the remaining Drop Pods is rolled for as normal. A unit that Deep Strikes via Drop Pod cannot assault in the turn it arrives. Once the Drop Pod has landed, the hatches are blown and all passengers must immediately disembark as normal. Once passengers have disembarked, no models can embark on the Drop Pod for the remainder of the game.

Legion Land Raider Battle Tank 250 PTS

During the Great Crusade the Land Raider design was rediscovered, allowing their manufacture. The techno-archaeologist Arkhan Land rediscovered the designs hidden beneath the surface of Mars. These original vehicles, the Proteus pattern Land Raider, were incorporated into the arsenals of the Imperium's forces. Within a decade, advances and further developments in the Land Raider were made and a more easily deployable version, dubbed the Land Raider Phobos, was deployed widely throughout the Astartes Legions and the Imperial Army. Such was the demand for the Land Raider Phobos that an entire Forge World, Anvilus IX, was devoted entirely to its production. By the time of the Drop Site Massacre, thousands upon thousands of Land Raiders had been deployed to the Imperium’s forces.

Legion Storm Hawk Tactical Gunship 165 PTS With a versatile architecture, the Storm Hawk has been adapted by the Divisios of the Mechanicum to create a flexible gunship for demi-squads of the Astartes. Deployed across every Legion, the arrival of a Storm Hawk might see a squad of Assault Astartes leap from it, grav chutes flaring as they leap into the fray or a fearsome Battle Armour Dreadnought being brought closer to their objective. Highly prized by Astartes commanders, even the Imperial Fists with their love of siege warfare value the Storm Hawk as it allows for a more reliable battlefield insertion - particularly when the skies are screaming with artillery bursts and concussion shockwaves as they so often in the 31st Millennium.

Legion Spartan Assault Tank 295 PTS

An armoured transport of truly massive proportions, the Spartan is a heavy assault tank. The Astartes Legions maintain these huge war machines as part of their arsenal and deploy them into the most hellish and destructive warzones, where even the mighty Land Raider would be torn asunder. Their greater transport capacity also finds particular favour amongst those Legions who deploy large numbers of Terminator armoured units such as the Dark Angels. Its design bears clear connections with that of the Land Raider, and the majority of its interior space is given over to a transport capacity greater than almost any other Imperial vehicle. It is also considerably faster on the battlefield then its size would suggest thanks to potent reactor-driven motive drives.

LEGION SUPPORT UNITS Most Astartes Legion units include a Legion Support Unit option, allowing an additional unit to be selected. Units with the Maximum Firepower special rule may take two Legion Support Units. These Legion Support Units do not use up a slot on the force organisation chart and count as the same category of unit as the parent unit they were selected to support (see page 109 of the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook). If held in reserve, both the parent unit and the support units are rolled for and deployed together. The only limitation of a Legion Support Unit is that when it is deployed, it must be placed within 6”. After the game begins, both the parent unit and the support units can then act independently and move further apart.

Legion Predator Armoured Assault Vehicle 65 PTS

The Predator Armoured Assault Vehicle was a natural pairing for the Astartes Legions as they crusaded to conquer the stars. In the golden age of the Imperium it became a common sight alongside the ranks of the Imperial Army and the garrison forces who remained behind on compliant worlds. Over the centuries as the crusade was engulfed in heresy and the heresy gave way to the scouring that followed, the Predator evolved into a more varied and heavier beast and the AAV (or Mark I as it would later be designated) found itself superseded and relegated to private armies and surplus depots. But in the 31st Millennium on the battlefields of a thousand worlds, the Predator AAV was an unrivalled combination of armour, firepower and speed.

Legion Apothecary 55 PTS With a fighting force as vast as the Astartes Legions, it is vital that the physical strength be maintained. The Legion Apothecaries have a sacred duty to preserve the health of the Astartes even in the midst of battle. If a Marine finally succumbs to injury, the Apothecary is ready to administer the Emperor’s Peace, the Astartes’ duty at an end. That task done, the Apothecary then retrieves the geneseed of the fallen warriors so that they gain immortality as the Legion goes on.

Legion Battle Armour Dreadnought 115 PTS

Amidst the hammering of iron and chanting of runes, the weapon-shops of Magma City on Mars turn out Imperial Battle Armour Dreadnoughts to the time-honoured and hal1owed designs known only to them. The most enduring types are the Imperial Battle Armour classes Carolus, Deredo and Furibundus whimsically known by the troops as Chuck, Eddy and Fury. Standing at almost twice the height of and Astartes Terminator, these war-machines are built to support the Legiones Astartes and the Emperor’s Great Crusade. As the Crusade was shattered by the Heresy, many found their way into the private armies of Imperial Commanders on both sides. Battle Armour Dreadnoughts are commonly modified by the receiving Legion in order to meet their specific needs. The Night Lords are known to almost exclusively configure their Battle Armour as the Carolus variant while the Alpha Legion favours the Deredo class.

Legion Deathstorm Drop Pod 50 PTS The Drop Pods have long formed the backbone of most first wave assaults by the Astartes Legions. Some have even developed tactics exclusively around their use, such as the Lunar Wolves Spearhead. The Deathstorm Drop Pod is a useful support unit in this manner as it brings much needed firepower into a warzone far ahead of slower tracked assets such as Predators and Whirlwinds. That such Drop Pods must use automation to deploy their weaponry so rapidly is a necessary drawback and Astartes Tactica means that only a foolish or inexperienced commander would allow such machines to land near friendly assets.

Unit Composition: • 1 Legion Deathstorm Drop Pod Unit Type: • Vehicle (Open-Topped)

Wargear • Reaper Autocannon

Special Rules • Inertial Guidance System • Immobile • Drop Pod Assault • Deathstorm Array

Options: • The Legion Deathstorm Drop Pod may replace the Reaper Autocannon in its

Deathstorm Array with on of the following: - Heavy Deathwind Launcher ........................................................................... +25pts - Heavy Assault Cannon .................................................................................. +50pts

• The Legion Deathstorm Drop Pod may take a Locator Beacon for ................+10pts

Deathstorm Array: The Deathstorm Drop Pod contains a sophisticated automated weapons array which carries five weapons (usually Reaper Autocannon) and on activation fires them indiscriminately at anything moving nearby. The array counts as a single weapon with a 360 degree line of sight. At the start of the Movement phase of the turn it lands, the Deathstorm fires D3 times at each unit (friend or foe) within 12”. After this initial activation, on each subsequent turn it may continue to fire in the Shooting phase at an enemy unit using its normal range, and rate of fire. Example: The Deathstorm Drop Pod upgraded with Heavy Assault Cannons lands and immediately opens fire on the two units that are within 12”. Luckily both are enemy units! After rolling D3 for each unit it emerges that the first unit takes three attacks from the Heavy Assault Cannons while the second is luckier and only takes a single attack. The Deathwind Drop Pod then rolls to hit with its BS of 2 for the six shots from the Heavy Assault Cannon against the second unit and rolls a whopping eighteen shots at BS 2 on the first unit! On the next turn the Deathstorm can then freely target a single enemy unit with the Heavy Assault Cannon’s 24” range. The Astartes player decides the rear armour of an enemy tank 18” away is too tempting a target and so rolls to hit with six shots using the Pod’s BS 2.

Inertial Guidance System: Should a Drop Pod scatter on top of impassable terrain or another model (friend or foe!) then reduce the scatter distance by the minimum required in order to avoid the obstacle.

Drop Pod Assault: Rather than using the deployment rules for Legion Support, Deathstorm Drop Pods always enter play using the Deep Strike special rules. At the beginning of your first turn, you must choose half of your Drop Pods (of all types, rounding up) to make a 'Drop Pod Assault'. Units making a Drop Pod Assault arrive on the player's first turn. The arrival of the remaining Drop Pods is rolled for as normal.

Legion Support Weapon 40PTS Support Weapons such as the Rapier Laser Destroyer are often deployed by Astartes commanders, especially those from the Imperial Fists and Iron Hands Legions, and is widely used during Boarding Assaults and in the close and deadly confines of urban warfare. Other Legions such as the Ultramarines and Lunar Wolves prefer Tarantula heavy bolters or lascannon to guard the flanks. The Space Wolves and Emperor’s Children enjoy the cacophony of the Thudd Gun to herald their attack and the Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors have been known to use large numbers of Mole Mortars to either attack from an unexpected angle or overcome entrenched enemy fortifications.

Explosive Demise When the Support Weapon loses its last wound roll a D6. If the result of this roll is 2-6 then remove the Support Weapon unit as a casualty as normal. If the result of the roll is a 1 then place a Large Blast template onto the table, centred on the gun model. All models, friendly and enemy, under this template take a single S3 AP- hit. Legion Predator Deimos Medium Tank 85 PTS

The Predator Deimos is a highly effective medium tank designed to provide Astartes detachments with heavy fire support in the heat of battle. First issued en-masse during the Great Crusade, the Predator Deimos is capable of mounting a wide variety of heavy weaponry including Executioner Plasma Destroyers and Annihilator Lascannon. Battles in the total darkness of nightworlds have been fought in near daylight conditions as volleys of sun-hot plasma blasts incinerate flesh and high-energy laser bolts rip apart armour with contemptuous ease. For warfare against a heavily fortified foe, the Predator Deimos is capable of mounting a Heavy Conversion Beamer which turns it into an extremely powerful siege unit and long-range tank destroyer, but this firepower is gained at the cost of manoeuvrability and increased vulnerability to short-ranged attacks.

Legion Proteus Explorer 225 PTS

The Proteus Explorer was first forged sometime during the Dark Age of Technology, but re-discovered during the Great Crusade. It contains extraordinarily powerful augury systems, allowing it to scan battlefield conditions with extreme precision. The progenitor of all later Land Raider designs, the Proteus epitomises the goal of the Great Crusade to explore and conquer new worlds. Its sensor systems make it useful as both a command tank and the leader of an armoured spearhead; however, due to the fact that it lacks a forward assault ramp and has a lower troop capacity, as well as being harder to reproduce, makes it an uncommon sight in the 31st Millennium.

Legion Sabre Tank Hunter 120 PTS

As large tank formations are common amongst the Astartes Legions so too is the need to combat them. The Sabre Tank Hunter was designed for just such a purpose. The Sabre was armed with a powerful anti-armour weapon known as the Neutron Laser Projector. This powerful laser weapon gave the Sabre the ability to engage and destroy enemy armoured vehicles at range. A variant exists mounting the fearsome Laser Destroyer array for dealing with closer range armour. The tank was developed in much the same way as the Vindicator Siege Tank and it is unclear in Imperial records which design was developed first. In any event, it has proved remarkably efficient in its role. As the civil war within the Mechanicum raged on, the ability to manufacture the Neutron Laser Projector was nearly lost and only a few Forge Worlds are still capable of building them. Some Legions deploy their Sabre with the more common Vanquisher Cannon to allow the Sabre to keep its role as a powerful tank-hunter.

Legion Vindicator Siege Tank 115 PTS

The origin of the Vindicator is fragmentary, although the earliest records show it was developed along with the other Rhino variants during the Dark Age of Technology. Records show that the Vindicator was first fielded in large numbers on Rostern I, when massive Thunderer Cannons were mounted onto remodelled Rhinos and used to blast heavily dug-in Traitor positions among the urban rubble. Iron Warrior Vindicators played a key role during Siege of the Terra. Some tank commanders prefer the bulky Thunderer Cannon to be replaced with the more compact, but no less potent, Demolisher Cannon or the more flexible Thunderfire Cannon and all three versions remain a vital part of a Legion’s siege and urban combat capabilities.

Legion Whirlwind Artillery Tank 90 PTS

The Whirlwind is fast and mobile – ideally suited to keep up with an Astartes Legion battlegroup. This ability to engage the enemy and rapidly change positions to avoid counter-battery is prized more than masses of long-ranged, slower artillery commonly used by the Imperial Army. Its target acquisition and telemetry gear also allows the Whirlwind to engage the enemy from behind cover with far better accuracy than conventional artillery. The Whirlwind has a limited role as an anti-aircraft vehicle as it is able to launch short-ranged flak missiles, although this task is better suited to specialised units. When fully loaded, the Whirlwinds missile launcher carries enough missiles for an initial engagement. However, because these missiles must be manually reloaded, the Whirlwind must withdraw after firing in order to rearm. In spite of this, the transport capacity inherited from the Rhino allows for a large ammunition bay, and the Iron Hands Legion equip each vehicle with a servitor dedicated to speeding up the reload time.
