Based on what you remember from last class, respond to the following prompt on a loose sheet of paper with your name on it:

• What surprised you about the story presented in the video?

• Were the actions of the assassins justified?

• What surprised you about the story?

• Why do you think this event was able to “spark” the powder keg of WWI era Europe?

Set up two pages in your notebook like the example below and title it “From Neutrality to War: Ch. 22 Notes”

In each section respond to the following guiding questions after reading the selected section of text (use complete sentences in your responses):

22.2- Why did President Wilson’s decision to stay out of World War I in 1914 please many Americans? What was the status of combat in Europe in 1914? What was the status of diplomatic efforts to end the war at that time? 22.3- How did the attack on the Lusitania bring the United States closer to declaring war in 1915? Why might the Sussex pledge have helped the United States stay neutral in 1916? 22.4- What events in early 1917 caused President Wilson to ask Congress to declare war? President Wilson said the United States would be going to war to make the world “safe for democracy.” How did his critics respond to this reasoning?

In the stay neutral and declare war sections, provide 2-3 reasons/arguments for each course of action.

Timeline of EventsOn the top half of a blank page of your notebook create a timeline from 1914-1918 and place the following events on it:

-Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand-Outbreak of war in Europe-Germany declares war on the open seas-Lusitania sunk-Sussex pledge-Stalemate on the western front

Describe the significance of each event in 1-2 sentences

After you develop your timeline, place an X at the point that you think the US should declare war. If you think the US should have stayed neutral write “stay neutral” at the end of your timeline.
