You probably have heard that question asked at one time or anotherand you may have wondered about it yourself. It is a legitimate question.A lot of people, including many to whom the Chamber is very important,have no real concept of exactly what a Chamber of Commerce is, howit works, or what it is for. For example, there are those who believe thatthe Chamber prints nice brochures, answers inquiries and advertises whata great place we have to visit, live, work and enjoy the good life. Theyare right, up to a point. We do all these things, and proudly so. All ofthese jobs are important. But they are not the only reasons the Chamberis here. Those are the things we do as a matter of routine because theyneed doing and we are good at them. The functions of the Chamber,though, go far deeper; the Chamber of Commerce is a catalyst...acommon vehicle through which the enlightened mutual interests of allsegments of the business community work together for the common goodof the total community. A better community means better business andwe are working for a better community for everyone here. That's why wedo what we do. The Board is composed of local business leaders whovolunteer their time and energies to make sure that the many and variedprograms of the Chamber are carried out. I make the point that they arevolunteers. In order to carry out the major programs of the Chamber, avolunteer system of committees is also organized.
Most of the members of the Chamber are retailers, professionalindividuals, real estate brokers, service providers, banks, restaurants, etc.in the Anthony area. We have a dues structure based on number ofemployees. We respect our members’ investment and in turn our memberssupport the Chamber's programs every year because they believe in whatis being accomplished.
The major benefit of membership in the Anthony Chamber ofCommerce is that the Chamber acts as the unified voice of area

businesses. We maintain our vitality because our members want to getinvolved in matters which concern the economic well-being of the area.
We e-mail timely information and In this way, members are keptinformed of activities and receive information. We supply informationand promotional “Goody Bags” for newcomers to our area. TheChamber Retail Committee creates events to promote our retailers. Wesponsor the Annual Balloon Fest and Christmas Parade. In the lobbyoutside our office, we have maps and information on the surroundingarea. There is no fee charged for members and major area attractions todisplay their brochures. We promote our local chamber businesses tokeep our dollars in Anthony where they can work for us.
Just stop and think and look around you, and see all the good thingsthat have happened in the last 12 months and realize that there has beena lot of work by a lot of dedicated people behind every accomplishment.This begs the question: who is the "we" that does all this? "We" are"you", the people of the community and all your business neighbors whoare members of the Anthony Chamber of Commerce. The "we" and"you" provide the ideas, the drive, the goals, the funds and the voluntaryservice to keep the Chamber going!
We welcome you as a member in 2012 in this thriving, growing,dedicated, not for profit Chamber of Commerce that represents the bestof the area and the business community at large. We are the AnthonyChamber of Commerce, bringing a world of business to your door.
Anthony Chamber of Commerce is proud to have provided leadershipin the community for more than 92 years. We have and will continue toprovide leadership on issues, programs and business development thathave benefited our community and our member businesses. The AnthonyChamber of Commerce was chartered in 1919. We just completed our92nd year. Our theme this year is “Sparkle & Shine With The Chamber".
A last note: As you all know change is in the air. The oil and gas boomhas come to Harper and Sumner Counties. We have all heard the storiesabout the lease agreements being made and the money involved. Thiswill bring huge revenues to our counties and the state. What has madethis possible is the horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, “fracking”that can recover oil and gas that we could never have gotten before.Fracking has been going on since 1947 and 99% of the componentsforced into the rock is water and sand. Horizontal drilling is just like theold vertical drilling except when they get down to the proper depth, theykeep drilling horizontally. We just need rain because this oil and gasboom depends on water to be successful.

A huge wind farm, Flat Ridge 2, is being developed by BP WindEnergy in Harper, Kingman, and Barber counties. Sumner County willhave 6 1/2 miles of the project’s generation tie line and will have theinterconnection substation built by Westar Energy. The substation will beassessed annual state ad valorem taxes. This $800 million project willprovide 312MW of wind power and create 500 construction jobs and35 permanent jobs.
There are nine wind farms operating in Kansas and eight being built.We are rated the second best state for wind in the nation and are 14thin production. There are dozens of wind projects on the drawing board,most waiting for companies to buy the power.
