Catalyst (Do NOT do this on your weekly sheet!!)
• What is your goal for the rest of this year?• What would be the best job or other thing
that you could have in the next 10 years of your life?
• …Is chemistry important
Well, do you like money?Average Salaries and Education
Why care about chemistry? (TPS)1. So you can graduate. ($$$)2. If you’re going to college, you’ll probably take
chem there. Make it easy! ($$$)3. Develop your brain.4. Develop organization and study skills.5. Understand the universe!

3 Min: Think and write a few sentences about how this chemistry class will be useful
for your life goals – whatever they are.

Some dataStudent A Student B
Never talks out of turn, helps neighbor understand
Talks out of turn, disturbs neighbor’s learning
Works hard to understand the concepts during class work
Copies answers to class work or guesses at the answers
Who do you think did better on the test?
Now…1. Decide on one of these actions that will be
import to help you succeed. 2. Write a sentence or two about how today’s
objective will help you achieve your life goals.

KP#1: A chemical equation shows which compounds and elements are in a chemical reaction.
• NaNO3(aq) + KCl(aq)  NaCl (aq) + KNO3(aq)

Today, we will classify 5 different types of reactions.
1. Synthesis2. Decomposition3. Single Replacement4. Double Replacement5. Combustion
The next 5 slides are like a big key point #2.
Type #1: Synthesis• Two reactants combine to form one
product.• A + B -> AB
• Examples: –Fe(s) + O2(g) FeO(s)
–2Li + Br2 2LiBr
Type #2: Decomposition• One reactant splits into two or more
products• AB -> A + B • Examples:–2PbSO4 2PbSO3 + O2
–2H2O 2H2 + O2
Type #3: Single Replacement• A single element replaces another
element in a compound• A + BX -> AX + B
• Examples:–3Mg + 2AlCl3 3MgCl2 + 2Al
–MgBr2 + Cl2 MgCl2 + Br2
Type #4: Double Replacement
• AB + CD -> AD + CB• The cations and anions from two compounds
switch partners.• Examples:– NaNO3(aq) + KCl(aq)  NaCl (aq) + KNO3(aq)
– NaBr + H3PO4 Na3PO4 + HBr
Type #5: Combustion• A substance reacts with oxygen, releasing
energy (Fire!)• A + O2 -> AOx
• CxHy + O2 -> CO2 + H2O
• Examples: –C + O2 -> CO2 (Burning Coal)
–C3H8 + 5O2 -> 3CO2 + 4H2O
Try these:
1. MgCO3 -> MgO + CO2
2. Pb + S8 -> PbS2
Try these:
1. MgCO3 -> MgO + CO2
2. Pb + S8 -> PbS2
1 R, 2 P means DECOMPOSITION
2 R, 1 P means SYNTHESIS
Try these:
1. Fe + Ag2SO4 -> FeSO4 + 2Ag
2. K2SO4 + Pb(NO3)2 -> 2KNO3 + PbSO4
3. CH4 + 2O2 -> 2H2O + CO2
Try these:
1. Fe + Ag2SO4 -> FeSO4 + 2Ag
2. K2SO4 + Pb(NO3)2 -> 2KNO3 + PbSO4
3. CH4 + 2O2 -> 2H2O + CO2

Practice Time
• First 10 Mins: Work Silently, Independently• Next 20 mins: You may collaborate– Teach and tutor for bonus points!
• Stay in your seat.
• When time is up, we will go over the answers.
Exit Question
Classify the following reaction:a. CuCl + K → KCl + Cub. CuCl + KF → CuF + KClc. 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
