About GRIHA Council

Together with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, The Energy and

Resources Institute (TERI) has developed GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment), which

has been endorsed as the ‘National Rating System for Green Buildings in India’ in the year 2007.

GRIHA is an indigenous green building rating system developed specifically to suit Indian climate and

construction practices. The rating aligns itself with the national regulatory framework and policies, such

as, National Building Code, Energy Conservation Building Code, Ministry of Environment and Forests

Clearance, Central Pollution Control Board Guidelines etc. of India, in its Intended Nationally Determined

Contribution (INDC) document submitted at Conference of Parties (COP) 21 in Paris has highlighted GRIHA

as an indigenous green building rating system developed in India.

In order to achieve the aforementioned goals and objectives, GRIHA Council, a not-for-profit independent

society, was formed by TERI and MNRE to administer, promote and implement GRIHA in the country. The

GRIHA Council issues GRIHA Certification for new buildings as well as retrofits and carries out all activities

related to the issuance of GRIHA certification.

All buildings, which are in the design stage, are eligible for certification under GRIHA. Buildings include

offices, retail spaces, institutional buildings, hotels, hospital buildings, healthcare facilities, residences,

multi-family high-rise buildings and campuses.

About GRIHA Summit-

The GRIHA Summit brings together experts from industry, finance policy and consumers to develop and

drive new initiatives; provide insights, and showcase sustainable products and green business

opportunities. It also facilitate sharing of international best practices from all across the world to elicit

practical applications that are most relevant in the Indian context.

The GRIHA Summit is an ideal event to showcase your business to the leading minds in government, the

industry and education. GRIHA Council works with partners to integrate their products/services/skills into

the conference, ideally in a way that augments the delegates’ experience and advances each sponsor’s

goals. GRIHA Council can deliver on a wide variety of goals- thought leadership, generating borrowed

interest via media (print, online, social), introduction to individual delegates, product demo or showcase,

branding, etc.

About 10th GRIHA Summit -

For thousands of years, human societies have proved that living sustainably — as healthy and happy

individuals, within caring and stable families and communities, and in harmony with the natural world —

is possible. In the last decades ‘development’ gradually came to be seen as a holistic notion,

encompassing economic, social, cultural, political and environmental dimensions. Recently, the concept of

global partnerships has gained prominence in sustainable development fora, most notably as a central

element of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17, which is at the heart of the global United Nations

(UN) development agenda for the period 2016 – 2030. As we move closer to 2030, the stress is on

collaborating and working together towards knowledge exchange, sharing of ideas and solutions,

strengthening research at a global level.

The global community finds itself at a critical juncture today. We all recognize that succeeding in the

attempts to mitigate climate change, control GHG emissions and combat various environmental issues is

not down to one person. It’s about being resilient, with collaboration being the key ingredient that makes

it all possible.

Mankind is facing emerging new challenges as well as exacerbated existing ones. Inequality has

deepened, environmental degradation has increased, the energy crisis is intensifying, and urbanization is

erratically increasing. At the same time, new economic powers have emerged, new technologies are

shaping our societies, and new patterns of human settlement and activity are heightening the pressures

on our planet. A new era demands a new vision and a responsive framework.

It has been established that the built environment can contribute to a more equal, inclusive and cohesive

society if the places where we live, the facilities we use, our neighborhoods and meeting places are

accessible, inclusive, resource efficient and user-centric. Education and awareness have come to the

forefront as the world realizes that education must be reoriented to a vision of sustainability, one that

links economic well-being with cultural traditions and respect for Earth and its resources. The

collaborative efforts of GRIHA Council & University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia are in

synchronization with the criticality of education and research for linking social, economic, political and

environmental concerns as crucial aspects of sustainable development. Interdependence between

organizations and the natural environment is central to a systemic sustainability management perspective

given that organizations depend on the natural environment for inputs and organizational actions directly

impact the natural environment through feedback loops.

It is time to orient ourselves and embark upon the journey towards more inclusive and sustainable

development. The 10th GRIHA Summit with the theme “Fostering Partnerships for Sustainable Habitat”

shall serve as a platform to deliberate on interdependence between organizations, systemic

sustainability management, and feedback loops for better resource efficiency. The Summit is to be held

on 11th –12th December, 2018 at Indian Habitat Centre (IHC), New Delhi. Eminent speakers and

dignitaries around the world will gather to debate, discuss and deliberate on the aspects of

sustainability in the context of inclusiveness, international cooperation and education.

“Bounce Off” – Debate on ‘Is Sustainable Affordable?’

In order to promote widespread construction of energy efficient/ green buildings in the country, the Government has initiated various schemes and policies. Though the technology for construction of sustainable building is readily available there is a perception that sustainability comes at a cost.

'Bounce Off' had a panel of 6 eminent personalities who deliberated on "Is Sustainable is Affordable?" The panel is a blend of architects, real estate experts, environmentalist and developers.

The debate was moderated by Anisha Nayar Dhawan Zee Business. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGBFR5uGdxw

Praroop - GRIHA Green Mart-

An exhibition called “Praroop” – GRIHA Green Mart was set up at India Habitat Centre, to

demystify the myth that sustainable is not affordable. It will exhibit building materials and

technologies like walling material, flooring material, insulation, doors, windows, glass, plumbing

fixtures, air-conditioning equipment, lighting system, etc. Praroop allowed the visitors to choose

materials to design a G+1 virtual green building for themselves. The simulation model generated

a green-score to indicate the level of sustainability and cost effectiveness of the building.

“Praroop” helped visitors understand the relationship between sustainability and affordability.

Individuals, who achieved the highest Green-Score were rewarded during the Summit.

GRIHA Valedictory and Award Evening- The 9th GRIHA Summit concluded with a Valedictory & Award Evening. Shri Durga Shanker

Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, was the Chief

Guest for the occasion. In his speech he said, “As of December 2016, the Ministry of Housing and

Urban Affairs has mandated the usage of three innovative construction technologies validated by

BMTPC such as re-use of recycled content in building materials etc. to be mandatorily adopted by

all new projects coming up in the country irrespective of location and project cost. Adoption of

innovative construction techniques is poised to decrease delivery times for newer projects and

accomplish the ‘Housing for all’ mission by 2022.” Projects rated in the year 2017 was conferred their respective GRIHA rating. GRIHA Council also recognized the efforts of project team in developing strategies when implement/ proposed for various projects registered under GRIHA Rating by awarding them with ‘Exemplary Awards’.
