19SU05 and 19SU34 Attachment, brain development and learning - teaching the child who has

This course is aimed at teachers and school leaders dealing with children whose challenging behaviour can disrupt teaching and learning and cause secondary trauma in peers and in those adults working with them. Children who have been or are in the care of Tusla CFA or who have experienced trauma or attachment difficulties may not respond to commonly used classroom management and behaviour management strategies. Through better understanding of attachment and the needs of children suffering loss and trauma, teachers may help them to regulate themselves and derive full benefit from their school life. This course aims at giving teachers and school leaders a greater insight into the behaviour and needs of children in care or all those who’ve suffered loss and trauma and will support them to develop policies and practices to respond positively as individuals and as a school team. Facilitators are Christina Enright, RN, BSc Psychology, Dip in Family Therapy, MA Child Psychotherapy, who over the past sixteen years has worked with children, adolescents and their families in a variety of settings, including schools. Her experience includes direct work, parenting assessments, consultation to staff teams as well as service development and clinical supervision and Anne McCluskey, BEd, BSc Behavioural Science, M Equality Studies who is the principal of a DEIS primary school and is a foster carer. 19SU07 Teacher & Artist Partnership as a CPD model This is a unique summer course that offers teachers the opportunity to explore the nature and educational value of partnerships between teachers and artists in supporting arts education in schools. It potentially improves literacy, numeracy & well-being in all schools including DEIS. Many schools across the country are engaged in projects with artists, ranging from one-off artist visits to longer term projects, and in a variety of art forms. If you are currently engaged in such a project or are planning one for the coming year, then this course will be of interest to you. This course looks at the ways in which working with an artist in school can be enhanced in order to provide meaningful experiences for children and a lasting impact on school practice. Particular emphasis will be on the role of the teacher and artist, their unique contributions to projects and the significant benefits that can accrue from a dynamic teacher/artist relationship in the planning and implementation of projects. Placing the teacher/artist project within the overall Arts Curriculum in schools and exploration of practical issues will be central. The course draws on research in the field and looks at practical teacher/artist projects and partnerships that have been undertaken in schools recently. Various art forms will be explored and participants will have opportunities to explore their own creativity throughout the week. Course tutors are teachers and artists who have been involved in such projects and participants on the course will include both teachers and local artists. If you are looking to improve your understanding of arts education, to improve Arts Curriculum integration in your classroom, to work with a Partner in the field of 'The Arts' , to engage with a professional artist as a way of improving your own arts teaching skills? Would you welcome the input and insight of a practising artist while teaching the children in your care? Dates: 1- 5 July 2019 Time: 09.30 – 14.00 Venue: Scoil Mhuire NS, Woodview, Airlie Heights, Lucan, Co Dublin, K78 KP94

19SU13 and 19SU21 Nurturing Wellbeing through Mindfulness

Due to the nature of our work as teachers, we all benefit from opportunities to nurture our wellbeing - which can be quite depleted at the end of the year. The combination of personal and professional content in this course ensures a holistic developmental journey enabling participants to reflect with greater clarity on their own wellbeing, that of their pupils and the wider school community. Internationally research proves that mindfulness helps reduce stress, anxiety, exhaustion and increases clarity of thinking, improves our relationship with ourselves and others, our performance at work and our physical and mental health - enhancing our overall wellbeing. To bring mindfulness to children and young people it is necessary to begin with teachers, other school staff and all adults involved in the child’s educational journey. Through this course participants will be enabled to:

• learn practical ways to feel calmer and more present in their work and communication

Practice guided mindfulness meditations

Practice journaling and enquiry as part of mindfulness

cultivate compassion for self and others

experience ‘in-person’ mindfulness teaching, offering a model for those who go on to teach children/ young people

The course links closely with ‘Well-Being in Primary Schools – Guidelines for Mental Health

Promotion’. Schools are now working on consolidating the good practices already in place in their

schools and seeking out relevant CPD opportunities, programmes etc. that will build on and

complement mental health and wellbeing strategies already in place and enhance the whole school

approach.
