Agri SA Launches Water Desk

On 3 May 2018 Agri SA announced that that it had formally launched a dedicated Water Desk that will focus on the need to ensure equitable access to water for farmers across South Africa. This initiative is in response to a host of external challenges facing agricultural water users, including severe drought, climate change and under-maintained infrastructure. The situation is all the more urgent given several policy proposals that may simultaneously increase the cost of water while reducing the availability to agricultural users.

The Agri SA Water Desk will, amongst other things, focus on water policy and legislative proposals such as the draft National Water and Sanitation Master Plan and the National Water Resource Strategy. The current amendments to the National Water Act, for example, will determine the cost of water for agricultural users, which is why it is necessary to engage with government and other key stakeholders from the start to work towards a fair outcome.

The Agri SA Water Desk will also give inputs to the Water Research Commission (WRC) on research priorities and will act as a forum for top water experts to share their insights in a meaningful way.

Agri SA Loods Watersentrum

The Agri SA Water Desk will be led by Janse Rabie, an environmental lawyer and Head of Agri SA’s Natural Resources Centre of Excellence and Gregory Smith, a water scientist.

“The Agri SA Water Desk will be a one-stop-shop for Agri SA members, where they can get up to date information and advice on all things water-related,” said Janse Rabie. “Given the complexity of water rights and the fast-changing policy environment, we believe that a dedicated Water Desk is the best way to enable agricultural water users to stay abreast of all legal developments which will have an impact on the way they farm and do business.”

“Agri SA is at the forefront of legislative and policy development regarding the water sector in South Africa. Agri SA strives to support government in this fundamental area through collaboration with key stakeholders and timely and well-researched inputs to policy development,” said Dan Kriek, President of Agri SA.

Agri SA invites its members, and interested parties, to contact the Agri SA Water Desk to find out how they can get involved.

Kobus Steenekamp, MD, Monsanto South Africa was one of the panel members during this discussion and shared with the audience his excitement on the fascinating happenings, now and in the future regarding technology. He said that Monsanto has helped farmers in South Africa for the past 50 years by bringing them the best technology available, enabling farmers to produce more in order to feed the ever growing population of the world.

Looking to the future, Kobus stated that most of the technologies that will take us to 2035 and beyond will be disruptive technologies. It

Looking forward to 2035, nation in Conversation asked the question on

Thursday 17 May: “How will new technology change

the face of agriculture as we know it today?”

The discussion was facilitated by Pieter Geldenhuys on the far left. He is the founder and director of the Institute for Technology Strategy and Innovation aligned with North West University. The members of the panel were from left to right Wynand Malan – Vodacom,

Tavonga Alex Siyavora – Product Manager John Deere, Jaco Minnaar – Chairman Grain SA and commercial farmer and Kobus Steenekamp – MD Monsanto SA.

will phase out certain processes and phase out certain skills. It will be imperative for both input suppliers as well as producers, to upskill.

Up to now technology trends focussed on higher productivity, pesticides and herbicides. Newer technologies include exciting developments in the gene editing field.

Genome editing techniques

can be used to make small

changes, similar to mutations

but more precisely, to disrupt, correct or modify gene activity.

The potential of genome editing is wide-ranging - it can be used to treat or eradicate diseases, develop pest resistant, high- yielding, environmentally adapted crops and livestock, nutritionally enhanced foods and much, much more.

Kobus reminded the audience that with Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto two leaders in the technology and agricultural space will become one. Together they promise to keep all farmers, commercial and small-scale on top of relevant technology developments.

He believes that future technology is absolutely crucial to move both commercial and small-scale farmers into the future. He added that technology has the potential to

incrementally increase the output of small-scale farmers and compared hand-weeding with mechanised methods to illustrate.

According to Kobus Steenekamp, South African farmers rank under the best farmers in the world, if not the best! He said that it is for the company a privilege to play a role in ensuring that farmers in our country produce more, with less and in a sustainable manner.

• spesiale etes met net suiwelprodukte op die spyskaart;

• besoeke aan melkplase deur skoolkinders;

• fotokompetisies om die mees fotogeniese melkkoei te kies;

• donasies van suiwelprodukte aan welsynsinstansies;

• aanbiedings deur voedingkundiges oor belangrike feite omtrent melk en melkprodukte;

2018The MPO is preparing to join nearly 80 countries worldwide in drinking a toast to milk and milk products when World Milk Day 2018 is celebrated on 1 June.

Since the first World Milk Day which was celebrated in 2001, this event has developed into one of the highlights on the dairy calendars of 77 countries. Last year, #Worldmilkday was celebrated over a time span of 72 hours in 77 countries at 583 different events to pay tribute to a product that is so much more than the sum of its many nutrients – milk!

The value of milk and milk products in a healthy lifestyle was celebrated through activities such as:

• special meals with only dairy products on the menu;

• school visits to dairy farms;• photo contests such as one to select the

most photogenic dairy cow;• donations of dairy products to welfare

organisations; • communication by nutritionists to share

the important nutritional facts about milk and dairy products;

• videos with dairy farmers working on a development project; and

versatile and nutritiousModern consumers no longer consider dairy only as an important nutrient in their daily diet but see it as a necessity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle

in a fast-paced society. Dairy is served in convenient single serving packaging which makes it ideal for a healthy, nutritious on-the-go meal or snack – from yogurt for breakfast in the car on the way to work to flavoured milk in a school lunchbox or sports bag.

Fuel and recovery drink for sportSportsmen and -women around the globe are increasingly using milk and dairy products as fuel, for faster recovery from injuries, to help with muscle building and as a recovery drink after intensive training sessions. According to Team USA who participated in the 2018 Winter Olympics, a great deal of their success can be attributed to the fact that milk is part of their training programme. Furthermore, the powerhouse nutrient is served daily to athletes at American Olympic training centres.

Lean and healthyA large number of international peer review papers clearly illustrate that the nutrient composition of milk and milk products helps to lower the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The calcium in dairy products plays an important role in regulating body weight, which is why even high-fat dairy products are increasingly being included in the menus of weight loss programmes.

The calcium in dairy products is highly bio-available and makes a significant contribution to bone density. The role of dairy products in a healthy ageing process and the prevention of osteoporosis is acknowledged globally.

Inmemoriam

Schalk leer ken as ‘n bekwame

Al was hy afgetree, was De Jager steeds by landbou betrokke.

PERS-verklaring

‘oom Lullu’ devoted his life to

agriculture“It is with sadness that we received the news of oom Lullu de Jager’s death. He was a legendary figure in agriculture and the man who started the Free State Agriculture (FSA) Young Farmer Committee.”

That is according to Gerhard Kriel, Chief Executive Officer of FSA, after De Jager (79) passed away on 8 May 2018.

“He made a huge impact and devoted his life to agriculture. We will miss him dearly.”

De Jager, who was General Manager of FSA from 1984 to 1999, was hospitalized after having undergone emergency surgery on the brain on 15 April 2018. He also suffered from cancer the past few years.

“What made oom Lullu special was his absolute commitment to giving young people in the organization (FSA) a chance and a place to develop,” said Dan Kriek, President of Agri SA and former President of FSA.

“He did this through the Young Farmer committee, but he took it beyond that. He gave younger farmers a similar place as the seniors. He gave them relevance and opportunities.”

Even though he was retired, De Jager was still involved in agriculture. Despite his illness, he for instance attended the FSA Young Farmer Conference, with the theme Joint Farming, in Bloemfontein on 12 April 2018.
