Days again. There

is a profound, per-

haps mystical,

sense for most Jews

that this is a time to renew once again

their sense of connection to the Jewish

community. Our congregation is so

fortunate that we can come together

again.

We welcome people who are sure

there is a God; people who are sure

there is no God; people who are trying

to figure out their feelings about God

and religion. Everyone is welcome.

We will join together singing, laugh-

ing, and at times, having tears in our

eyes. We will welcome in the Jewish

New Year with familiar tunes and

prayers. At the same time, we will ex-

plore new ways to connect spiritually

with a different prayer book—an early

draft copy of the newly finalized pub-

lished machzor, Mishkan HaNefesh.

As we go through the Yamim No-

raim, the Days of Awe, I invite each of

us to look inward and see what the

following year can hold. And how we

can best unlock that potential in our-

selves.

On Yom Kippur we will be trans-

ported to another plane with several

iterations of Kol Nidre and continue

our service using a different early draft copy of Mish-

kan HaNefesh. On Yom Kippur day it is important to

remember that health comes first and if you need to

drink and eat, then that is what you must do. I hope you

will join us in sharing your Yom Kippur reflections at

3:30pm before we come together again for the final

parts of the day.

Many of us think that the High Holy Days conclude

with Yom Kippur, a serious, introspective day. How-

ever, we know that ending on a sweet note—think of

our onegs after Shabbat—is key. Which is why we will

continue the season with a Sukkot celebration, “Pizza

in the Hut” on October 19 at noon.

And then for the sweetest of them all, Simchat Torah,

our goal is to have enough in attendance so that we may

unroll the entire Torah around our sanctuary before

singing and dancing with them in the social hall on the

evening of October 23. See our calendar for the specif-

ics of each of these events.

Coming together as a community, being with one an-

other while we each do our own spiritual work, is one

of the beautiful moments we strive for during our holy

days. I wish for each of us moments of inspiration, mo-

ments of beauty, moments of clarity, and moments of

peace.

May this year be good and kind to each of us and our

loved ones. May it usher in a new era of peace for our

world. May its sweetness last like honey on the tongue.

On September 18, the Agudas Israel Board of Trus-

tees and Rabbi Jackson participated in a board work-

shop facilitated by two excellent volunteers from the

Union of Reform Congregations (URJ), Jay Gellman

and Jill Goodman. Both of these individuals have a

long history of leadership within their own congrega-

tions and within the URJ. They are trained facilitators

and Jay Gellman has many years of experience work-

ing with synagogues looking to strengthen their con-

gregations. Our goal for the day was to examine and

enhance the work of the congregational board,

We began the morning with a little coffee and bagels,

schmoozing, introductions, and a D’var Torah. Then

we proceeded with the hard work. Our facilitators en-

gaged us in a series of exercises. We started by review-

ing the functions of the temple board and then explor-

ing what the board needs to change to more effectively

execute our responsibilities. We examined our individ-

ual motivation and attributes as leaders in the congrega-

tion. We looked at barriers and actions needed for the

changes we identified. Areas identified as our strengths

include our long term existence, the personal connec-

tions and friendships within the congregation, the con-

tributions we make to the greater community and our

work towards tikkun olam, and the presence of Rabbi

Jackson. Challenges we identified include the need to

build leadership, increase engaged membership, im-

prove communication (particularly between the board

and the congregation), secure our finances, and develop

long term goals.

Since virtually all that we do at Agudas Israel is de-

pendent on the commitment of volunteers, we spent a

significant amount of time discussing volunteerism.

We worked towards understanding an individual’s mo-

tivation to volunteer and how we could maximize moti-

vators to get others involved and volunteer. We looked

at the ways that we currently acknowledge our volun-

teers and brainstormed strategies to do a better job of

this.

Throughout the day, the driving force behind our ef-

forts was the effort to continue to best meet the congre-

gation’s needs. As the day came to a close we con-

cluded our work by identifying the 3 most important

goals that arose from all the activities and discussion.

The development of long range goals including vi-

sioning, innovation and a strategic plan

Better development of the role of the committees

including a definition of the committee’s role, a

written portfolio to be handed on as leadership

changes, and better communication.

Better communication regarding budgeting and

forecasting as well as continued development

of our legacy program.

We will work to develop concrete action plans to ful-

fill these goals. We will be putting committees together

to work on these endeavors. I hope you will join us in

this important, sacred work.

This has been a year filled with violence and unrest

throughout the world. We feel our lives are filled with

uncertainty. Knowing that we have a spiritual home in

which to gather is a great comfort. I pledge to do my

best to assure that Agudas Israel continues to grow and

flourish and remain a place of shelter and peace.

I wish you all a sweet New Year filled with much

Life Cycle Moments

Bonnie's Byline The women of Agudas Israel Sisterhood have been busy

at work and having a lot of fun too! As we approach 5777,

we have prepared the synagogue for the High Holy Days

by cleaning and straightening up our “home”. Thanks to

all those who helped, including members of our Brother-

hood. We are excited to welcome new sisterhood mem-

bers who want to become a part of this great organization.

Please introduce yourself to anyone who you do not al-

ready know.

E Everyone is invited to attend the Break-the-Fast on

Wednesday, October 12, immediately following the final

very long shofar blast of tekiah gedolah on Yom Kippur

evening. There is no charge for this “feast”, however, res-

ervations are required. Everyone is asked to please bring

a dairy dish or salad (egg/tuna, etc.) or dessert for eight

people. Please NO noodle puddings! Please contact

Karen Murray to make your reservation (404-906-2464 or

email: n55402@yahoo.com), let her know how many peo-

ple are in your party and what you will be bringing.

On Monday, October 17, we will enjoy having lunch

together in our beautiful new Sukkah at noon (bring your

own sack lunch), and then at 2pm we invite you to experi-

ence a unique private one hour tour “behind the scenes” at

the Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theater of North Caro-

lina. Agudas Israel Sisterhood is privileged to experience

a guided tour of the stage and backstage areas of the fa-

mous Playhouse. Experience the OTHER side of the cur-

tain! No charge for Agudas Israel Sisterhood members/

October will be a very busy month for all of us in

preparation for the High Holy Days. We will also be

busy setting up the Sukkah as is customary every year

directly following Yom Kippur. Our thanks go to Steve

and Judith Levinson who have given us permission,

once again, to cut the bamboo branches at their lake

side property for this event. Toda Rabba… !!

On August 21th, Brotherhood volunteers worked very

hard to ensure the MJF event ran as smoothly as a well

oiled machine. Our members helped to sell tickets,

serve meals, monitor the parking, set up tables and seat-

ing under the big tent on the front lawn, direct and as-

sist visitors, and clean up at the close of the day. Sid

Williams did a great job setting up the sound system for

our musicians, and Dave Monoson ensured that our

security team was actively monitoring our facilities to

prevent any mischief or disturbances. My thanks to

everyone who volunteered and who helped make this

the most successful fund raising event of the year.

On September 5th, Labor Day, Brotherhood hosted a

very fun filled and successful End Of Summer Labor

Day BBQ fund raiser for our members and guests. We

had approximately 50 visitors, including two officers

from Laurel Park Police Department, Officer Kevin

Swanson, and Officer Kayla Maybin. On behalf of the

AI Congregation and AI Brotherhood, Officers Swan-

son and Maybin were presented with a Certificate of

Appreciation to commemorate the 50 years anniversary

of the Laurel Park Police Force, and for their dedicated

services to our community.

We are continuing to plan activities for Brotherhood

members such as golfing as long as the weather cooper-

ates.

Brotherhood also will provide 4 volunteers to serve

as ushers at the Piano Concert fund raising event on

9/25/16. I am sure everyone who attended the concert

had a good time and we thank you for your contribu-

tion.

Furthermore, Scott Foster and Perry Reihs re-

activated the camera group on Monday September 5th.

We had a good turnout of 8 members. Our next meet-

ing will be scheduled following the High Holy Days.

We will be organizing field trips for our members and

anyone else who wishes to join our group is most wel-

come. Please contact Scott Foster for further details if

you are interested in learning more about photography

and having a good time with other members of the AI

community.

On November 4th, Brotherhood will be conducting

the Shabbat Services, and we will be accompanied by

Rabbi Bentley and Cantor Winston, who will participate

with song and music.

On behalf of the Brotherhood BOD and myself, I would

like to wish everyone a L’Shanah Tova.. May the New

Year be sweet and filled with good blessing for our entire

Annual Rosh Hashanah Yom

Kippur Food Drive 2016

Dear Congregants and Friends,

Once again it is time for our annual

holiday food drive. We are challenged to

continue our efforts in partnership with

the Interfaith Assistance Ministries to

eliminate hunger in the greater Hendersonville commu-

nity. As we have demonstrated in the past we have the

potential to accomplish this goal. Last year Agudas Is-

rael donated almost 2000 pounds of food and other non-

perishables.

Each of us can do our best in this effort by taking home

a grocery bag or two when we leave the Temple on Rosh

Hashanah (October 2-4) and returning it on Yom Kippur

day (October 12) filled with non- perishable food and

paper goods to be donated to IAM. They will distribute

the items to the needy. We ask you to please check the

dates on packaged and canned food to be sure they are

not outdated. If you are going to purchase items, please

consider bulk items such as rice, sugar, dried beans and

pasta. Canned meat, fish, soups, peanut butter and

chicken are also good choices.

Your donations are one more way that we here at Agu-

das Israel can do our part in Tikun Olam insuring a

safeguard to those who may be at a disadvantage .

Agudas Israel has a new Pergola just in time for the Mountain Jewish Festival

Thanks to Sam Gess, Bill Lavine, Alan Cooper, Jerry Garfinkle, Allen Rosen, and Michael

Thorz for their "labor of love" in tearing down and reconstructing a new Pergola for Agu-

das Israel. This will be used for the Mountain Jewish Festival as well as for Sukkot. The old

one was rotten and dangerous and Alan saw to it that it came down and was rebuilt.

This new addition to Agudas Israel was sponsored by Alan & Bonnie Cooper in memory of

their parents, Ruth & Marty Cooper and Jocelyn & Irving Scheer.

The Holocaust

AFTER THE HIGH HOLY DAYS.... Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are solemn days

in the Jewish calendar but after days of judgment and

seeking repentance, Sukkot and Simchat Torah

quickly arrive and the tone of our worship and cele-

bration is different – lighter and more to be enjoyed

and appreciated.

This year we will begin our enjoyment of Sukkot

with a joint effort to decorate our brand new beautiful

Sukkah. The Congregation is invited to participate on

Saturday, October 15th at 12:00. Bring your fruits, real

or imitation, your New Years’ cards and any other

items suitable for hanging. Non –perishable items may

be dropped off in the Board room on Thursday or Fri-

day.

FOOD FACTS AND FUN???????????????????????????????????????????????????????? What is the diameter of the earth? This is just one example of the questions you may be asked on Trivia Night. All congre-gants are invited to an evening of Food, Facts (useful and otherwise) and Fun as emcee Danyul Jackson leads us on an ex-ploration of our knowledge of trivia , both Jewish and secular, on Thursday evening , November 3, at 5:30. This event is com-plimentary to our members and is brought to you by your Membership Committee. Included is a light dinner, trivia contests and prizes. Guest admission is $10.00. Our Simchat Torah celebration will occur on Sun-

day, October 23rd, preceeded by a Yizkor service at

6:00 P.M. If enough congregants attend, one of our

beautiful Torahs will be completely unrolled for the

festivities.

fully in both holiday observances. Decorate, Eat,

Dance and enjoy.

We will let everyone know when we are ready to implement the additional day. We are currently accepting applications for new members to join Elder Club as well as volunteers at both locations. All proceeds are to be used to purchase items such as carpeting, office equipment, furniture, and other items needed for our synagogue.

4. JNF TREES IN ISRAEL: Anyone interested in honoring or memorializing someone with a JNF Tree in Israel, contact Linda Reihs at 954-240-0287. Trees are $18 each. Make checks payable to Agudas Israel Sisterhood. Please include the following information: 1) 1)Name of deceased or honoree; 2) To whom the tree certificate should
