RABBI’S MESSAGE Rabbi Rachael Jackson
(Continued page 2)
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
November arrives and I think of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year, full
of a delicious turkey dinner, football, and family. It
is also a time to be grateful and give thanks. The con-
cept of gratitude is ingrained in our Jewish identity.
Many writers describe the first Thanksgiving, a cele-
bration by the colonists in Plymouth, Massachusetts
for surviving the harsh winter and thankfulness for
the bountiful harvest, as being modeled after the
holiday of Sukkot.
We Jews pray and acknowledge our gratitude to
God for all we are given. So, it is a good thing to ac-
knowledge the bounty in our lives, to talk about the
things we are grateful for. The time we spend with
November continues our Jewish month of
Cheshvan—the only month without a holi-
day—before ushering in Kislev in which we
celebrate Chanukkah at the end (this year
Dec 6-13). This means that we are the ones
that need to bring extra kavod (honor) to our
calendar. We ought to resist the urge to stay
home when it is cold and instead come out and be
with each other in our synagogue. It is truly the peo-
ple which make the space and the time holy.
The autumn weather has arrived and we have the
capacity to not hibernate like the animals. If October
has been any indication, we are taking those oppor-
tunities. As we talked about last month, our syna-
gogue focus is Avodah (worship), Torah (study), and
Gemilut Hasidim (acts of loving kindness).
We came together in Avodah for Simchat Torah,
for Sukkot, and for Shabbat many times this month.
Together we read from the Torah, a new feature on
the Second Friday of each month—and how appro-
priate that we started this innovation with Bereshit,
the very beginning of our Torah. In November, we
will read from parshat Toldot, generations, which is
also very apt for us to hear at a synagogue as we are
all links in a chain—from one generation to the next.
Our adult education courses also started up in Octo-
ber and will continue this month. How exciting it is
to learn with each other! Please feel free to join us
any week. We meet Tuesday evenings at 7pm and
Wednesday afternoons at 12p. Double check the cal-
endar to verify that we do have class and for the
topic.
Giving back to our larger community is another
value on which we stand. There were over 20 Agu-
das Israel members at the Taste of Hendersonville
dinner supporting IAM (Interfaith Assistance Minis-
tries). We were also told that we donated over 1200
pounds during our High Holy Day food drive.
Incredible! Hunger and homelessness do not
end when our food drive does however. I en-
courage all of us to give what we can, when
we can, even if there is there is no official call
to do so.
All that being said, I must also say thank
you. Thank you to everyone who came out to my in-
stallation on Oct 23 – 24. I am so honored to be the
Rabbi of Agudas Israel Congregation. That Shabbat
together only highlighted how much of a match we
really are. The support and love we feel, especially
after only being here such a short time, is palpable.
My family and I could not have found a better place
to call home. We look forward to many engaging and
fulfilling years with Agudas Israel. Todah rabbah,
thank you very much.
Bivracha, with blessing
Rabbi Rachael Jackson

BROTHERHOOD REPORT
(Pres. Message continued from page 1)
Well, now that we all dried out from the recent
“tsunami”, I hope all of us made it without suffering
any property or physical damages. Lucky for us we
live in the mountains, and that water flows downhill,
so that most of the flooding concentrated south of us.
I realize that some of us have either friends and/or
relatives living in areas or cities that flooded, and so
we are obviously concerned about their wellbeing
and are wondering what we can do to help those who
suffered substantial losses from all the flooding.
This is a topic that I would like to entertain at our
next Brotherhood meeting at the end of October, and
perhaps we can coordinate our efforts with the con-
gregation at large once we determine how we can be
of help. I am open to suggestions and would appre-
ciate hearing from anyone who has any proposals for
us to review.
On another note, I would like to compliment Mike
Beckerman and Sid Williams for the great job they
did in filming, editing and showing the history of
the Jewish Merchants of Hendersonville. It’s a true
tribute to the perseverance of the Jewish immigrants,
highlighting their ability to successfully re-establish
their lives in a new and foreign environment, and
how they were able to contribute to the growth and
prosperity of the community in which they settled.
lllOn October 8th, Mike and Sid hosted a showing of
the video to our congregation members and guests,
who also received a copy of the video and enjoyed a
pleasant social evening including complimentary
wine and cheese. All the money collected at this
event are being donated to AI courtesy of the Broth-
erhood.
Well, this is your last chance to enjoy the fall colors.
Winter is fast approaching, and our snow birds are
packing it up and getting ready to flock to warmer
weather down south. However, we are still planning
some outings with the camera club to get a few col-
orful photos of the fall colors. Perry Reihs is orga-
nizing some excursions for our group before he
leaves for Florida. Also Mike Beckerman has organ-
ized golf outings for our Agudas-it-Gets golf team at
Cleghorn Plantation for the beginning of November.
There are probably only a few more good days left
this year before winter sets in, the days become
shorter, and the ground freezes up. Al Cooper has
been active in organizing an outing for our Adventur-
ers Group to watch a Hendersonville High School
Football game, and it looks like we will get a good
turnout.
Our next big fundraiser will be the Hardlox Jewish
Festival, in Asheville, on October 18th. Teri and
Bonnie have been busy buying new merchandise for
this event, and we even reserved a double booth to
accommodate the plethora of new items which we
will be offering visitors this year. We have about 35
volunteers from Sisterhood, and Brotherhood who
will be participating at Hardlox, and who will be as-
sisting the girls in managing the set up of the booth
and sales of merchandise. We are confident that this
year will be even more successful than the last which
in itself was very profitable for AI. Last year, we not
only exceeded sales expectations but we were also
able to generate interest in AI and recruited some
new members to our congregation. With more peo-
ple moving to this area we hope to surpass our sales
volume, and to motivate additional new membership
in AI.
I look forward to the return of all our fine feathered
friends in the spring, and in the meantime you can
rest assured that the rest of us will be hunkering
down and keeping the lights on till your return.
Next Brotherhood meeting is scheduled for Sunday,
October 26th @ 9:30 am
Shalom, Michael Thorz, Brotherhood President
AGUDAS ISRAEL SISTERHOOD
Notes from Nat The High Holy Days are over and we start afresh
planning out the events for the New Year.
Sisterhood will be helping the Judaica Shop with (Continued page 3)
family and friends during this holiday reflect our
Jewish value of family and community. It is also a
time to embrace the value of tzedakah, with many of
us lending a hand, fighting hunger and contributing
to those who are less fortunate during this holiday
time (Jewish Values Online).
On a continuing basis I am awed by the good will,
hard work and generosity of our congregation, not
only to Agudas Israel but to the many organizations
that work, year round, to help those less fortunate in
our community.
It is in this season and in the spirit of Thanksgiving
that I want to express my thanks to each of you for
all you do, all the time. You are truly a blessing.
Shalom
Dr. Linda Perkel, President

Sisterhood is eagerly looking forward to our Rabbi
Rachael Jackson's installation, with many of our mem-
bers baking their specialties for this very important
event.
We have an often requested Game Day coming up for
our next general meeting on November 16th, 12 noon.
Bring a bag lunch, we can enjoy lunch together. Sister-
hood will provide coffee and dessert; then we can get
started with our games. We always have a lot of fun
playing whatever games we choose. Some of the games
we have played in the past are Mahj, Scrabble, Farkle
and I will be bringing a game called Bananagrams.
This is a great way to make new friends, or get catch
up with old ones. The charge for Game Day is $5.00
for members and $10.00 for non-members.
Save the date of December 7th, 12 noon which will be
our general meeting. This meeting is always special
and lots of fun because we celebrate one of our happi-
est holidays, Chanukah. We have a special soup and
salad lunch followed by wonderful baked goods from
sisterhood members. The cost for this lunch will be
$5.00 for members $10.00 for non-members.
We always welcome all of our members to any of our
board meetings which take place the first Monday of
the month, 10:00AM. Old and new members are al-
ways welcome.
Shalom to all,
Natalie Zitnick, Sisterhood President

VETERANS DAY – 2015
We are fast approaching another Veterans Day. A
day set aside to honor the service and sacrifice of for-
mer citizens who served in the United States Military,
and those currently serving around the world. So if
you see a veteran shake his or her hand, and welcome
them home. For those who paid the ultimate price of
liberty, stop, close your eyes, and say a prayer, for
them giving us the many blessings of freedom.

Henderson County Hunger Coalition
Belk Charity Days Sales Event
Some in our Agudas Israel
family are familiar with the
work of the Henderson
County Hunger Coalition
(HCHC). The synagogue
participates in the mission of
HCHC by holding a seat on
the governing board. We
have assisted in raising funds which provide grants to
11 different social service organizations throughout
the county. Among them are IAM, Mainstay, Manna
Food Bank and the Council on Aging among others.
Like other non-profits the Coalition raises funds
through a variety of activities. The largest generator
of funds is the Annual Hunger Walk. September 19
was the 33rd time the event was conducted. Revenue
from this year’s event dropped 26% from 2014. It is
understandable with the economy sputtering along
and everyone being asked to donate for various causes
that resources become scarce.
In an effort to shore up HCHC treasury, and have
funds to distribute and support the efforts of all the
agencies who benefit, we are asking everyone in Hen-
derson County and especially Agudas Israel to con-
sider joining in Belk Charity Days. This is a win win
proposition for all. Belk will donate the proceeds
from Belk Charity Days ticket Sales in their entirety,
100%. Each ticket purchased is $5. The ticket may
be redeemed for $5 on each separate purchase made
during Charity Days on Saturday November 7, 2015.
Essentially it costs the purchaser nothing when shop-
ping on merchandise at Belk. Perhaps a holiday gift,
special occasion or just for you.
With every ticket purchase, you receive a flyer de-
scribing the store-wide savings available only to
Charity Day ticket holders and comprehensive an-
swers to “Frequently Asked Questions” about the
sale. You can begin shopping at the Charity Days
prices any time between October 27 and 10 AM on
November 7. Your purchased merchandise is put
aside (reserved) for you at the store and can be picked
up anytime any day after 6 AM on November 7.
INTERESED…WANT TO KNOW MORE? Obtain a Belk Charity Day flyer at the synagogue. If
you’re interested in supporting this worthwhile en-
deavor and perform a mitzvah, contact Bill Lavine at
