University of the Arts STUDENT COMPETITION, 2009 SECOND PLACELOCATION GRAZ
The form draws attention to itself and it offers to the whole area a recognizible identity. The four departments of the School are formed as four outstanding boxes, which are also kept physically apart and thus creating clear functional structure. Between the boxes is the open space, to be used for diverse exhibitions and presentations. The exhibition space is being constantly differ-ently perceived, that leads to different use possibilities. One of the important approaches is the flexible use of walls and various space situations creating a vareity of possibilities for art instal-lations, video projections and other artistic expressions. Indirect lighting is being enhanced, which makes the best setting for do-ing and exhibiting art. This is further emphasized by the materi-als being used, as translucent and opaque materials are carefully placed and are giving to the space a neutral atmosphere. Adi-tional lightening comes through a gap on the roof, reflecting and falling inside. This causes different spatial and lighting situations, which makes the whole open space exciting and inspirational.

The project deals with the topic of migration of the people and its im-pact on society today. Through the globalization, rapid development of the means of transport and telecommunication and a growing gap between rich and poor, more and more people are leaving their native countries in search of better life. This provokes a change of the social structure in the host society, which brings a lot of problems but also potentials with itself. Spain represents an interesting example because the country has transformed itself within a relatively short time from a country of emigra-tion to an immigration country par. Just the fact that in January 2000 3.5% of the population of Barcelona were foreigners, and in January 2008 this percentage has risen to 17.5% of the whole population indicates the scale of transformation. The project attempts to respond to this new reali-ties, it tries to bring the neglected and marginalized voices to the center of the discussion; its also an attempt to celebrate cultural diversity and to democratize society. Platforma Xeneo is located in the central area of Barcelona, which was always characterized by an immigration, El Raval. Platforma has a supralocal dimension and should serve as a cultural fo-rum, documentation center, research center, a statement on migration is-sues but also as a public place of an inter-and transcultural exchange for various organizations, associations, students, visitors to the city and of course the residents of the city.

The object consists of two bodies, an extroverted at front an introverted at the back side. Two bodies are forming two functional units as well, based on the grade of intimacy. From the street the programm is easily readable, due to complete opening of the facade and framing shape. Depending of moment of use, lighting and time of the day the appear-ance of the building is changing. A puffer-zone between the street and the functional content was created in form of an in-front-plaza.

The times, when the city and its port were flowerishing is behind. Il Porto Vechhio (ital. for The Old Port) was once one of the busiest ports in Europe, serving most of Central Europe with its traded goods. Through the moderni-sation, relocation of the Port of Trieste and decline in port activity, the Old Port has gradually lost its function. Located in the heart of the city, with an architectural heritage of great value it is becoming a new district within the city, a district mostly devoted to yachting, cruise industry, exhibitions and service. The form of a stranded ship should be the reminiscent of the great maritime past. The hotel is breaking the longitudinal structure of the port, and by making itself visible while approaching it is becoming a new landmark for the old port. It is oriented towards the sea and southwest, creating great view and cosy atmosphere for the guests and visitors. By lifting the hotel into the air and structuring it on system of pillars, the views and lighting for rooms and the barrier-free movement underneath are being provided. Beside the rooms and usual hotel infrustructure, the hotel is equiped with a polyfunc-tional hall for future events in the Port.

The task was to design a hangar for twelve Red Bull airplanes, used for Air Race. The superb marketing of Red Bull was tried to be implemented into the project, offering not just place for planes, also a café, bar, viewing desk, lounge, direct approach to the flying machines, a meeting point. The chosen colours are blue and silver colour, recognizible colours of Red Bull. The archi-tecture is evocative on jet motors, it should stand for dynamics, action and zero-gravity.

The project is part of our studio masterplan for Whitechapel area in London. The masterplan proposes to enrich and valorize existing structure and to improve the green spaces, public spaces, public functions and create an area suitable for knowledge-based econ-omy. The project proposes to keep existing connections between the public park at Vallance Road and Hanbury Street, improve the connection by adding diverse functions (library, bookshop, me-diathek, workshops spaces, school of theatre, exposition space, amphitheatre, a big auditorium for an experimental theatre and ad-ditional second stage space). The park is being quasi extended into the plaza and then flowing into the Hanbury Street. The project is an attempt of an urban recovery of the area, by boosting creative and cultural activity in the zone.

Designed pavillon is inspired by traditional Japanese art of folding paper - origami. It can be placed everywhere, conceptully it could easily transform a non-place into a place (in Marc Augé sense). Proposed function of approximatly 300 covered m2 would be an exhibition space and bar, although it is suitable for various activities (shelter, playground, sculpture, beachbar, extraluxurious toilette...)

Collective housing project Ceravci is a compromise of various conditions of architectural reality in a transitorial country (as Bosnia and Herzegowina is) where the investor is demanding maximum use of surface for commercial use, small apart-ments and simpliest construction solutions. Nevertheless, the building has an underground garage, spatious children and sport playground, as well as the space for gym and wellness. The building is positioned is a future development area of town of Bihać, where this project should be the first constructed. High degree of flexibility was achieved, as studio apartment and two-room apartment are possibly merged into a bigger one, what should be conditioned through real-estate market.

The area is characterized through very heterogenious architec-ture (from historical semiperipherical low density houses,19th century city palaces, housing towers from 60ies to modern contemporary architecture), over big open market with bio-products to the new established designer stores and trendy bars. The idea is to create an functional hybrid comprising of office space, gastronomy, apartments and commercial space, wrapped in an envelope which doesn´t gives an information of the programm inside. In order to stretch the existing mar-ketplace (which is in very front of an object) into the building lot, the object was retracted on two sides, thus allowing an undisturbed passage and making the whole lot more extrovert and public.

Redesign of a standard hotel room seeks to expand functionally and visually the rather small size of the room and all of its disadvatages. Wardrobe, shoe store, fridge, suitcase place, shelf and a desk are incorporated in the wall. Bathroom and the room are divided through a SmartGlass wall, electrically switchable glass which changes light transmission properties when voltage is applied (transparency from 0% to 100%). The window is enlarged, creating a comfortable sitting, big amount of natural light and great view from the room.

On the Kaiser-Josef-Platz, right opposite the Opernhaus, is a fruit and vegetable open-air market where small farmers from the countryside around Graz bring their produce for sale (or rather their wives do). In the last years, as the organic and “slow food” movement is getting attention, the market is become hip among the locals and tourists. Four tracks, oriented towards the Opera and tram station, are forming a wide square (used for tempo-rary stands, mostly till 14:00 h), small intimate “piazzas” and the “streets”. Connections, both physical and visual are important feature of the project, since the attempt is to connect and attract the surrounding area to the market, allowing the passage from all sides. The combination of an existing and added greenery is pro-viding the shadowing and underlying the coziness of the market.

mapping the city Depicting an aspect (sociological, topographi-cal, structural, architectural, economical, gas-tronomical, ed cetera) of the city and produc-ing a two-sided, foldable map describing it. The bigger heterogenity of the people living in Graz has an impact how space is being used. The proposed guide is Ethnospace Guide, offering routes to explore some sides of Graz, that are unfamiliar, even to the people living in the city.

trofaiach pink With a small budget and a empty space, that used to be a tobacco shop, we explored the ways how materiality changes the per-ception. All surfaces, including door panels, window frames, walls, etc. were covered with rosa plush. During the night, the space was additionally being enlighted with a di-minished light. It was built as a temporary meeting-place and it standed for several weeks in a small town of Trofaiach.
