1. KE Hub Achievements

Overitsfour-yearfundingperiod,apartnershipofLancasterUniversity,NewcastleUniversityandtheRoyalCollegeofArtbuiltadynamicknowledgeexchangeprogrammecalledtheCreativeExchange(CX)tostimulatethecreativeeconomyintheUK,withaparticularfocusontheNorthofEngland.Throughnovelpartnershipsofacademic,industry,publicandthirdsectorexpertise,andcreativeapplicationsofdigitalmediaandtechnologyinsocialandculturalcontexts,theCXHubexplorednewgroundintermsofmethodandapproach.Itcatalysedaseriesofparadigmshiftsinthesectoranddeliveredvaluethroughitsoutputs.

Four Paradigm Shifts

• Ashifttoamoreintegrated,cohesiveandeffectiveapproachtoworkingwithsmallandmicrocreativeanddigitalbusiness,whichhavenottraditionallyengagedwithacademicresearch

• AshiftfromtheconceptofDigitalPublicSpaceasanonlineculturalarchive,asinitiallyproposedbytheBBC,toaseriesofinteractivedigitalpublicspaceswithbroaderscopeforbusinessinnovation

ThemajorachievementsoftheCXHubcanbesummarisedunderfourheadings,asshowninthediagrambelow:NewThinkingonInnovationinDigitalPublicSpace(industry-theorysphere);NewProduct,ServiceandTechnologyDevelopment(industry-practicesphere);NewPhDModelsandCapacity(academia-theorysphere);andNewFormsofKE(academia-practicesphere).

New Thinking on Digital Public Space

TheCXfocusedfromthestartontheinnovationpotentialofDigitalPublicSpace(DPS),initiallyworkingwithcorepartnertheBBCatMediaCityUKinSalfordanditscreativehinterlandinthenorthwesttoexploretheCorporation’svisionofopen-accessonlinenationalculturalarchives.AnachievementoftheCXprojectasawholehasbeentoradicallybroadentheconceptofDPStoembracethevalue-creationopportunitiesinarangeofadditionaldigitalpublicspacesresultingfromsocial,civic,healthandco-workingflowsofdata.Throughpapers,eventsandthinktanks,theCXstartedaprofounddebateaboutthefutureofDPSintheUK,builtanautonomousexpertforumcomprisingrepresentativesfromsuchbodiesastheBBC,BritishLibrary,WellcomeTrust,WikipediaandOfcom,andissettocatalyseaCharterforDigitalPublicSpace.ThiswilldefineandseektoprotectthepublicinterestinDPSandwillbeofhugebenefittothemanysmallcreativefirmsseekingtoinnovateinthisarea.

New Products and Services

AkeyachievementoftheCXHubhasbeentodevelopnewproducts,servicesandtechnologiesdesignedtocreatenewopportunitiesforcreativebusinesseswhilebringingbenefitstocommunitiesintheNorthofEnglandandbeyond.Wehaveevidenceofnewapps,gamesandsoftware,alongsidespinoutcompanyformationandjobcreationinmicrofirms.FourserviceandproductdevelopmentthemesemergedoverthelifeoftheHub:• Heritage,placeandtourism:novelapplicationsofdigitaltechnologywereused

tore-envisionheritage/tourismoffers• Citizenparticipation:creativedigitaltechnologieswereadoptedtoencourage

moreopendemocraticprocessesinlocalcommunities• Publicserviceredesign:opendataandothertechnologyresourceswereco-

optedtoimprovelocalservices,fromtransporttohealth• Entrepreneurship:therewasparticularemphasisonworkingwithhard-to-reach

micro-businessesCasestudiesinthisreportwillexpandthesethemes.AcommonfeatureacrosstheCXwastheinvolvementofpublic-facingandpubliclyfundedartsorganisationsintheNorth(suchasFACTLiverpool,EnglishHeritage,BBCMediaCity,andTyneandWearArchivesandMuseums)tofacilitatepublicfieldtrialsaspartofprojects.Thisprovedtobeasuccessful,high-valuestrategy,althoughwealsorecognisedthattraditionaluniversitymodelsof‘techtransfer’andIPmanagementneedtoberevisedinthelightofthenewcreativeeconomyofdigitalflows,andinthecontextofsocialengagementandco-creationwithcommunities.

New PhD Model

AdistinctiveachievementoftheCXHublayintherecruitmentandsupervisionofacohortof21PhDstudentsacrossthethreeinstitutions.ThesePhDsengagedinaseriesofmini-projectswithacademicsandcompaniesasinnovationcollaboratorsandfacilitators.ToeffectivelycombinedoctoralworkwithinnovationpracticeandKErequiredanewmixed-modePhDmodelbetweentheoreticalenquiryandreal-worldapplicationtobedeveloped.Theresultisanew‘hybrid’cohortofresearchersinKEwhoaddcapacityinthefieldandwill,astheytakeupnewroles,helptore-calibrateapproachesacrossthesectorinthefuture.ThePhDcohortalsoplayedasignificantroleinadeliberateshiftofstrategyduringtheprojecttointroducemoreinformal,iterativeandorganicmodelsofengagementwiththecreativeeconomy.

New Forms of Knowledge Exchange

TheCX’sfinalmajorcontributionliesinitsworkonnewKEplatformsandmodels,leadingtoourpromotionoftheideathatthedigitallyenabledcreativeeconomyrequiresswift,agileandnetworked‘CreativeExchange’andnotsimplyalinear

‘tech-transfer’modelofknowledgeexchangewhichpresumesasimplebi-directionaltransactionalongasingleaxisofdemand-produce-supply.Thisnewapproachwasfirstcrystallisedinamajortwo-dayKEconferenceatLancasterUniversityinSeptember2013,andsubsequentlydevelopedinPhDtheses,academicpapers,furtherprojectsandotheroutputs.Inthiscontext,theCXachievementliesinpilotingnewapproachesthatdemonstratethedifferentanddistinctivequalitiesthattheArts&HumanitiesbringtoKE,inadditiontochallengingbothacademicsandsupportinguniversitysystemstobemoreresponsiveandflexibleinhowtheyoperate.ThesenewformsofKEarenowevidentinthethreepartnerinstitutionsintheCXHub.

TheCXapproachtofacilitatingknowledgeexchangebetweenArts&HumanitiesresearchersandtheUKcreativeeconomyfollowedthreemainstages:

Business Mapping: Identifying the Needs

RecruitmentofdigitalandcreativebusinessesbyeachpartnerHEIvialaunchmeetingsandforumswasfollowedupwithaninitialscopingstudytoidentifyneeds.Researchersvisitedallcompaniesrecruitedtothenetworktoconductinterviewsanddevelopa‘needsroadmap’,whichwasanalysedtoidentifykeythemesandsharedinterests.Anoutputofthisphasewasaspecialtooltomapbusinessneeds(seeCXwebsite:http://thecreativeexchange.org).

CX Labs: Building Teams and Projects

Themesarisingfromthemappingofbusinessneedswerethendevelopedassubjectsforaseriesofformalone-dayCXLabsledbytheseniorCXresearchteam.ThereweresixCXLabsintotal(twoledbyeachpartnerHEI)onthefollowingthemes:• PublicServiceInnovationandDemocracy• Performance,Liveness,andParticipation• MakingtheDigitalPhysical• RethinkingWorkingLife• Stories,Archives,andLivingHeritage• BuildingSocialCommunitiesTheseCXLabsweredesignedspecificallytobringtogetheracademics,businesses,CXPhDresearchers,otherexperts,andcommunitygroupsaroundtheidentifiedthemes.AcollectionofdedicatedKEtoolswasdesignedforthesefast-trackinnovationeventstoaidrapidideagenerationandselection,prioritisationofpotentialprojectsandformationofcollaborativeteams.Insomecases,publicartsinstitutionseitherjoinedorhostedtheseeventsasapreludetohostingco-creationactivitiesandpublicfieldtrials.TheCXLabmethodofgeneratingmini-projectsformedthedominantplatformforyears1and2ofthenetwork.Atotalof42projectsweregeneratedthroughthisprocess.

PhD-led Projects: Enhancing the Network

Withanetworkofpartnersandprojectsinplace,andwiththePhDcohortacquiringnewskills,perspectives,andconfidenceoverthefirsttwoyearsoftheCXprogramme,theHubswitcheditsapproachforyears3and4.ThiswasadeliberatestrategytotestalternativemodelsofKE.Therapid-fire,‘bigbang’projectformationoftheCXLabswasreplacedbyKEmethodsthatwereslower,more

organicandmorereflective.Engagementwithpartnerswasled,notbythePIandCo-IsoftheCXHub,butbythe21Doctoralstudentsinthecohort,whodesignedcustomisedKEtoolstosuitdifferentresearchandinnovationcontexts.ThisapproachresultedinadeeperconnectionwithpartnersandafurtherseriesofCXprojects.Formatsincluded‘creativelounges’,hackathons,publicgalleryworkshopsand‘citizenscience’engagements.ThetoolsusedinthisworkhavebeencriticallyanalysedandfullydocumentedinthePhDtheses.

National KE Conference

AmajormilestoneintheCXHub’sKEjourneywasanationalKEpeerreviewedconferenceatLancasterUniversityinSeptember2013.Thisgenerated21peerreviewedpapersexploringinnovativeknowledgeexchange.WealsousedtheeventasanopportunitytoradicallyredesigntheconferenceasanexperimentalKEplatform.Fournewmodesof‘ConferenceExchange’weredeveloped,eachonesupportedbynewtoolsandapproaches.ThemodesexploitedArts&Humanitiesvaluesandcapabilities,utilisingforexamplethepoliticsofthecoffeeshop,performance,singingandmovement,creativefacilitation,andboundaryobjecttheory.Astrategicoutcomefromthistwo-dayconferencewasamanifestoforKEthatproposedreplacingknowledgeexchange–atransactionaltermstillinthrallto‘techtransfer’–withcreativeexchange,atermbettersuitedtothedistinctivecontributionofArts&Humanitiesresearchtothecreativeindustries.

3. KE Hub Demonstrable Impact

a) Demonstrable impact on the creative economy

Throughcollaborationwithmorethan100publicandprivatesectororganisationsoverfouryears,theCXHubdevelopedandpilotedconceptsandprototypesfor61artisticandcreativeproductsand42softwareandtechnicalproducts,thusexpandingthecreativeeconomyintheUK.Throughthisactivity,wealsodevelopedcapacityandcapabilityincreativebusinessesanddevelopedpublicserviceinnovation.ThedemonstrableimpactoftheCXHubcanbedescribedunderthreeheadings–economicimpact,socialimpactandculturalimpact.

Economic Impact

AkeycontributionoftheCXnetworkwastoworkwithhard-to-reachmicrobusinessesintheUKcreativeanddigitalsectors–fledglingenterprisesthathadeitherpoorornoexperienceofworkingwithacademia.Atotalof46microswereengagedinthisway(seeAppendixC,p78).TheCXPhDcohortactedasminiR&Ddepartmentsforthesecreativeentrepreneurs,mirroringtheiragileandoftenimprovisatorywaysofworking.Liverpool-basedtechmicroRedNinja,forexample,multiplieditsstafffromthreeto15andboosteditsturnoversix-foldfollowingaCXengagement,OpenPlanning,tousedigitaltechnologytogivebetterpublicaccesstolocalplanningprocesses.RedNinjacollaboratedwithLiverpoolUniversityacademics,LiverpoolCityCouncilandtwoCXdoctoralresearchersfromLancasterUniversityontheproject;thecompany’sCEOLeeOmardescribedtheimpactasgivingconfidenceandcredibility,andopeningavenuestonewclientsandsectors:“TheCreativeExchangeprocesswasfantasticforus.”(SeeRedNinjacasestudy,p43).Attheotherendofthescale,theCX’sKEecosystemalsofocusedonstimulatinginnovationwithinthein-housedevelopmentteamsoflargeorganisationssuchastheBBCandMicrosoft.Forexample,theCXledtoacollaborationonthePastPathsprojectbetweenNewcastleUniversity,TyneandWearArchivesandMuseums(TWAM)andMicrosoft,developingnewtechniquesandencouragingnewthinkingwithinthetechgiant.AsProfessorRichardHarper,PrincipalResearcheratMicrosoftResearchCambridge,explained:“Thisprojectpushestheboundariesofwherepeoplecanuseandexperiencethetreasurestobefoundinmuseums.Itdoessowithsomereallynovelapproachestosearchandinterfacedesign.”(SeePastPathsprojectlistinginAppendixA,p73)InJanuary2016weconductedasurveyofbusinessesengagedintheCXnetworktoevaluateeconomicimpact.From45responses,73%saidthattheCXHubbuiltnewnetworksandcontacts;35.6%saidithelpedthemdevelopnewproductsandservices;33%saidtheyhadanewunderstandingofbusinessandmarkets;and20%saiditenabledthemtogetfurtherfunding.

Social Impact

AkeycontributionoftheCXHubwastoreachouttocommunityandthirdsectorgroupsandbringthemintotheinnovationnetworkascollaboratorsalongsidebusinessesandacademics.SeveralCXprojectsfocusedonaspectsofsocialinnovationsuchashealthandwellbeing,activetransport,localdemocracy,andcommunity-basedmedia,thuscreatingsocialimpact.Forexample,acollaborationbetweenLancasterUniversityPhDresearchers,academicsatWestminsterUniversityandGoldsmiths,ResonanceFM,andproductdevelopmentbusinessBlazeontheNearMissprojectuseddigitaltechnologytocollectdataoncyclingaccidentsandnearmissesinLondon.Thiscreatedaplatformforanationalcampaignforsafercyclingand,inthewordsofDianaDanovaofBlaze,expanded“thedefinitionofwhatcountsascyclesafetyresearch”.(SeeNearMissprojectlistinginAppendixA,p64)

4. KE Hub Engagements

a) Overview of engagements with the Creative Economy

TheCXHubwassetupinJanuary2012todeliberatelyengagewiththechanginglandscapeoftheCreativeEconomyintheUK,andinparticulartorespondtotrendsincitizen-led(user-generated)contentexperience,interactivenarrative,andradicalpersonalisation.Theseemergingtrends,identifiedinouroriginalbiddocument,becameestablishedoverthedurationoftheCXHub,asthe‘experienceeconomy’–inwhichthebroadcast,performingandvisualarts,digitalmedia,designandgamingsectorsareprominent–expanded.ThelaunchoftheCXHubwasaccompaniedbyapredictionofa‘paradigmshiftincontentcreationandmodesofdistributioninadigitallyconnectedworld,whichhasaprofoundimpactfortheartsandhumanities’.Thisprovedtobethecase.TorespondtosuchprofoundemergingneedsintheCreativeEconomy,theCXidentifiedkeychallengesinthesectorthatitaimedtoaddress.InparticularwewantedtoconfrontthelackofscaleandmanagerialaspirationthatwereidentifiedasbarrierstosuccessfortheDigitalandCreativeIndustriesintheNorthwest(CreativeLancashireReportApril2008),aswellasplugginga‘skillgap’intheroleofleadersandmanagersindigitalfirmsinexploitingthepotentialofdigitaltechnologyadvances(SkillsetReportJan2010).Athree-stageengagementprocess(describedinSection2–KnowledgeExchangeforArts&Humanities,p8)enabledustoengageeffectivelywiththeUKCreativeEconomyoverthecourseoftheCXHub.Throughout,therewasacommitmenttoengagingwitha‘mix’oflargeandsmalldigitalandcreativebusinesses,includinghard-to-reachmicros,sothatsmallfirmscouldscaletheirideasandlargemediaandtechgiantscouldrefreshtheirideas.Initially,theCXfocusedonthedynamicNorth-westregionwithitsspecificcreative‘ecosystem’–aninternationallycompetitiveclusterofbusinessesbuiltoninnovationwithBBCMediaCityastheflagship–andlatermorewidelyacrosstheNorthandelsewhere.Givingsmalldigitalandcreativecompaniesaccesstobothgrassrootslocalcommunitiesandtothegalleriesoflargepublic-facingartsinstitutionsforco-creationandpilotingactivitieswasastrengthoftheCX’sengagementwiththeCreativeEconomy,creatingstrategicnetworksandalliancesbeyondthescopeofthecollaborativeprojectsthemselves.

Co-Designing Personal Tools for Digital Public Spaces

Severalprojectsfocusedmorespecificallyonthedevelopmentofpersonaltoolsforlivingwithdigitalpublicspaces,includingappsanddevicestosupportindividualhealthandwellbeing(VisualisingBloodTestResults,AgeingPlayfully,NearMiss,NumbersthatMatter),technologiestofacilitatedataprivacy,storageand/orretrieval(AWalkinthePark,IndieData,HybridLives),andpersonalisationofheritageandcultureexperiences(OnthePrecipice).Theseprojectsusedco-designprocessestoengageindividualsinthedevelopmentofnewmethods,technologies,devicesand/orpolicy.Thisworknotonlyinformedthecreationofneworenhancedproductsandservicesbutalsogavetheprojectpartnersvaluablenewinsightsintouserbehaviours.

TheoriginalconceptoftheDigitalPublicSpace(DPS),asexpressedatthestartoftheprojectbytheBBC,wasinterrogatedindepthbyalltheCXparticipants,individuallythroughPhDdissertationsandcollaborativelythroughworkshopswithindustry.FurthercategorisationdevelopedDPSintoaseriesofdigitalpublicspacesforhealth,workinglife,cultureandpublicgovernance.AlsoworkontherelationshipbetweentheDigitalPublicSpaceandthephysicalpublicspaceandhumanbehaviourisbeingtakenforwardintheEPSRCPETRASproject.ThisCXworkhasresultedinindustryforummeetingsledbyJohnHowkinsandBillThompsonattheDigitalCatapultandWorkFoundation.AcademicoutputssheddingnewlightonanexpandednotionofDPSwillincludeabooktobepublished2016byAshgate,aDPSForumReportfortheindustry,thepublicationofpapersandPhDtheses.

12. Hub Management

TheCXHubbroughttogetherthreedifferentinnovationlabsfromthreedifferentHEIsindifferentpartsoftheUK.ManagingtheHubthereforerequiredcarefulplanning–notsimplytoaddresstheconsiderablelogisticalchallengesbutalsotomakesurethattheCXteamsineachofthethreepartnerinstitutionswere‘onthesamepage’intermsofacademic,theoreticalandcreativeapproach.Fromthestart,weresolvedthateachofthepartnersshould‘playtotheirstrength’(user-centreddesignatRCA,digitalmakingatNewcastle,innovationmanagementatLancaster,forexample)butthattheCXshouldadduptomorethanthesumofitsparts.Thisphilosophyrequiredadualstrategy–toreflectthedistinctivecontributionofeachpartnerwhilesimultaneouslypresentingtheCXHubasasingularentity.Thisbalancingactwasnotwithoutitsdifficulties.Theseniorresearchteamarrangedseveralin-depthsessionsintheearlyphaseoftheCXHubtoagreeacoordinatedplatformforexploringtheinnovationpotentialofDigitalPublicSpace.Ratherthanthisbeingdefinedbyspecificprojectsorpartners,wenegotiatedandagreedsixgenericthemesasamanagementteam:

• Personalisation:thepersonalisationofmediafordifferentviewersandcontexts

• Experience:newformsof‘massexperience’eventsandmediawiththequalityof‘liveness’

• Participation:differentformsofuser-generatedcontentsupportingparticipatorymedia

• Connectivity:exploring‘pervasivetransmedia’;theincreasingdigitalconnectivitybetweenpeopleandthings

securityissues,IPrightsandownership.Thesethemessubsequentlybecameresearchstrands,enablingthethreepartnerstoworktoacommonplatformasthecollaborativeprojectsemergedfromtheCXLabs.TheyalsobecameusefulpointsofreferenceforthePhDstudies,creatingaframeworktoensuretherewasaproper‘fit’betweentheDoctoralworkandthewideraimsoftheCX.EachPhDstudywasrequiredtoaddressatleastoneortwoofthegenericthemes.AstheCXprogrammeexpanded,sothepartnerslearnttoprioritisewhatshouldbediscussedandresolvedbytheCXManagementBoard(theseniorresearchteamincludingthethreeKnowledgeAssociates–oneineachHEI,avitalrole)andwhatshouldbepusheduptotheLeadershipBoard(comprisingwiderindustryandacademicrepresentation).Wealsolearnttoquicklyabandonideasthatprovedimpractical,forexampleweenvisagedaregularconferenceforbusinessesbutwediscoveredfast-movingcompanieswerenotinterested.ThespeedwithwhichtheCXnetworkdeveloped,andtheconstantdeadlineswithprojects,funding,and

RedNinjaisaLiverpool-baseddesign-ledtechnologycompany,whocollaboratedontheOpenPlanningprojectwithLiverpoolUniversityacademics,LiverpoolCityCouncilandtwoCreativeExchangedoctoralresearchers.Atthatpoint,theywere,intheirownwords,‘abootstrappedtechstartupwith3staffandlittletrackrecordofworkingdirectlywithlocalauthoritiesanduniversities’.NotonlydidtheOpenPlanningprojectdevelopaninnovativeappfornewperspectivesonengagingwiththeurbanplanningprocess,itcausedsignificantshiftsinthebusinesspracticesofRedNinjaandtheirapproachtocollaborativework.LeeOmar,theCEO,describestheimpactonthecompanyasfollows:“Havingdirectaccesstoworkwithalocalauthorityinapaidcapacitygaveusconfidenceandcredibility,whichenabledustodesignanddevelopasolutionthatenablesmorevisibilityforcitizenslivinginurbanenvironments.”“TheCreativeExchangeprocesswasfantasticforusasweinvestedmuchmoreofourowntimeintotheprojecttoenableustoproduceIPthatwecouldcommercialise.ThelearningofworkingwiththecitydatasetsaspartoftheCreativeExchangehasenabledustodesignanddevelopcommercialproductswithamultinationalenergycompanyonasmartenergyplatformthatwillenablesustainableurbandevelopments.CommerciallythiswasvaluabletousandisworthtentimesthefinancialrewardthantheCreativeExchangeproject.ThisvalidatestheextraworkwedidontheCreativeExchangeproject.”SinceengagingwithCreativeExchange,RedNinjaemploysfivetimesasmanystaffandtheirturnoverhasincreasedsixfold.Thecompanyisalsocontinuingthecollaborativeapproachtowork,sponsoringaprogrammeofPhDstudentsembeddedwithintheirpracticesanddevelopingtheirownresearcharm.Additionally,asadirectresultofthingslearnedfromtheOpenPlanningproject,CreativeExchangeisfundinganewtwelve-monthcollaborationtodevelopanewplatformbywhichpublicdata(suchasthatheldbycitycouncils)canbeheldandprovidedbacktorelevantpartiesinawaythatcanbetrulyopenandbeneficial.Itwillinvolveworkingwithcurrentdatahandlingcompaniestodevelopanewsystem,withtheaimofscalingitacrossthecountry.Itwillinitiallybetrialledinthreecities:Manchester,LancasterandLiverpool.

PublicMakinghasemergedinCXasamajorstrategyformanagingcomplexcollaborationsandensuringcreativeproductivitythatispublicfacingfromthestart.Ourworkhasbeentakenupbymuseumsasofferingnewwaysofengagingpublicswithcollections,byartsorganisationstofamiliarizeartistswithdigitaltechnologies,andbyculturalorganisationstofosterlocalentrepreneurship.SeveralCXprojectshaveworkeddirectlywiththepublic(forexample,OnThePrecipice,RedTales,ErithPark:WalktheTalk,seeAppendixA,p57).Ineachoftheseindividualprojects,CXhashadanimportantimpactuponourcollaboratorsandtheirpublics.OverthecourseofCX,thisconcernforworkingwiththepublichasdevelopedintoamoreambitiousresearchstrategy.Werefertothisas‘PublicMaking’,withallsensesintended:makingwiththepublic,makinginpublic,andmakingnewpublicsintheprocessofconductingourresearch.ThisstrategybuildsontheCX-widecommitmenttoknowledgeexchangeviajoint-participationinmaking(creativeexchange),anddevelopswaysofworkinginwhichparticipants’diverseconcernsandskill-levelsdonotcreateproblemstobesolvedbutcanbetreatedasarichresourceforcreativeproductivity.Inpracticalterms,weconductmakingsessionsinandwiththepublicandencourageavarietyofworktoemerge.Thesesessionsareprovocativelythemedtogiveaflexiblebriefforcreativeworkandtoexploreadesignspacethroughthefamilyresemblanceofwhatismade.Theseactivitiesoccupyahybridzonebetweenworkshops,openstudios/labs,hackathons,installationandperformancemaking.Thismakesthemrecognizabletocollaboratingcreativepractitioners,whilealsoenablingresearcherstoconductbonafideresearchundertheirauspices.Wherepossiblewehavesecuredadvertisedperformanceandexhibitiontimesforourworksoastogiveaclearpublicdeliveryandsenseofachievementforparticipants.ThesestrategieswerefirstexploredinInterglacial/Erratics,andsubsequentworkhasincludedacontributiontoaWW1commemoration,hostedbyTyneandWearArchivesandMuseums,WarWorkings/SoundMirrors(seeAppendixA,p57).Theapproachhasattractedinvitationsfrominternationalopensourceartsfestivalsandthecreativeentrepreneurialnetworksassociatedwiththem(e.g.Piksel,Bergen,Norway).Notably,in2016,CXresearchershavebeeninvitedbytheInternationalSymposiumofElectronicArts(ISEA)tocreateapublicmakingactivityinrelationshiptotheirarchiveofmaterials.Alloftheseinstitutionsareseeinginourstrategiesofpublicmakingnewwaysofengagingpublicswitharchivalandcollectedcontent.SoundSpacesisanexemplarypublicmakingproject(seeAppendixA,p57).ThisprojecthasenabledthepartnerSMEtoformulateitsbusinessinnewwaysthatextenditsrangeofcommercialopportunity,whiledeepeningthewaysofengagingpublicsavailabletocreativeorganisationslikepartnerFACTwhoareconcernedwithfacilitatinglocalentrepreneurship.

TheAppMovementprojectdevelopedthroughtheCX’spartnershipfundingwiththeSocialInclusionfortheDigitalEconomy(SIDE)programmeatNewcastle.AppMovementextendedthemodelofuser-ledmobileAppdesignemployedinthedevelopmentoftheFeedfinderApptocreateadigitalplatformwhichallowsindividuals,communitiesandorganisationstocommissionanddesigntheirownlocation-basedreviewApp.HenceAppMovementtransformedthetraditionallytop-downappdevelopmentprocessintoagrassroots,community-driven,participatorydesignactivity.UserscometotheAppMovementwebsitewithanideaforareviewserviceandthenusesocialmediatobuildacommunityofinterestedusers.AppMovementthenmovesintodesignphasewherethecommunitycollaboratestoconfiguretheirapp.ThenewappisthenautomaticallydevelopedanduploadedtotheiOSandAndroidappstores.SinceitslaunchinFebruary2015,27appshavebeenproposed,11appshavebeensuccessfullycommissioned,and9appsarecurrentlyliveinappstores.AppMovementhas2,300+usersproposingandsupportingappcampaigns,and18,000+usersofthevariousapps.ThroughoutCX,wehavesoughttotakeproductsandservicesdevelopedwithinprojectsanddevelopthemfurtherwithnewpartnersformutuallybeneficialimpact.AppMovementwasofferedasoneavenuetoexploreduringconversationswiththeDigitalCatapultCentre,Sunderland(DCC).TheDCCwereinitiallyinterestedinpolling/surveyingtoolstobetterunderstandtheneedsofthenetworkofsoftwaredevelopmentSMEstheyserved.However,indiscussionwithCX,theemphasisshiftedfroma‘top-down’servicedeliverymodelofunderstandingbusinessneedsandthentailoringeventsandtrainingcoursestosuit,toabottom-upmodelthroughwhichSMEscoulddirectlycommissioneventsaccordingtotheirneeds(andgivetheDCCinsightsintotheirneedsthroughthisprocess).AppMovementprovidesatemplateforhowsuchcommunity-ledeventcommissioningcouldwork,andanewEventPlatformiscurrentlyindevelopmenttowardthisendincollaborationwiththeDCCandsoftwareSMErepresentatives.

Creative Exchange Conference on Knowledge Exchange in the Arts and Humanities and Follow On Tools, A Cross-Hubs Activity (section 5, 6, 8) Aspartofourreflectiononknowledgeexchangewerealisedthatthepeer-reviewedconferencewasanimportant(anddysfunctional)knowledgeexchangemechanismintheArtsandHumanities.Weaddressedthisthroughtheradicalre-designofwhatanacademicconferencecouldberesultinginamajorconferenceonKnowledgeexchangeforAcademicsandIndustryinSeptember2013.Thiswasattendedbyover80delegates;notonlydiditaddressthetopicofinnovationinknowledgeexchange(with21papersacceptedviapeerreview)butthewholeconferencewasseenasaradicaldiversionfromthenorminconferences:seephotographsandcomments(http://thecreativeexchange.org/tkex).TheleadersofalltheKEHubswereanimportantcomponentofthisevent.Theyweregenerousenoughtoenterintothisprocessinaveryactivemanner.Ratherthanpresentingtheactivitiesoftheirhubsintheconferenceweaskedthemtorespondtothefirstday’sactivitiestoprovideaseriesofprovocationstoadeliberatelyboisterouspanelsessionlateintheevening.ThishelpedtheconferencefocusonthefundamentalissuesofKnowledgeExchangeintheCreativeEconomy.Thefeedbackfromtheconferencewasextremelypositiveandalsodemonstratedthatpeoplewerethinkingaboutknowledgeexchangeinanewway.Theconferencealsoservedasaplatformforustoadvanceourthinkingontoolsforknowledgeexchange.OneaspectofthiswasthecreationofaseriesoftoolsforenablingnewthinkingaboutKE,butalsowiderapplicationonforKEintheArtsandHumanities.Thesearedesignedtobeadaptedbythepeopleusingthemtomeettheirparticularneedsandaptitudes.Someofthesearedownloadable,editabledocumentsthatforinstancehelptodrawourhiddenassumptionsinagrouporhelptheevaluationofaKEsessionbutalsoincludehighlyinnovativedigitaltools.Specificallywecreatedabespokepieceofsoftwaretogiveusadigitalpresentationcreationandvotingtool.ThesetoolsareusedbyabroadrangeofArtsandHumanitiesacademics,communitygroupsandcompanies.ItwasalsoinOctober2014usedfortheAHRCconferencefortheKEhubsheldinLancaster.Thedigitaltoolcanbeused(andothertoolscanbeaccessed)atwww.cx.tools.

andstudentsarerecruitedfromdisciplinaryareasrepresentativeofthethreefaculties.TheDigitalCivicsprogrammeatNewcastletakesideasondigitalpublicspaceforwardintotheareaoflocalGovernmentpublicserviceprovisiontoexplorenewformsofcitizen-ledservicedesignandcommissioning.OurAppMovementplatformdevelopedasajointCX-SiDEeffort(seecasestudy)isthearchetypalexampleofthisconcept.LiketheCXPhDmodel,DigitalCivicsstudentsworkwithacademicsacrossseveraldisciplinesandwith(inthiscase)localgovernmentorthirdsectorpartnersthroughouttheirPhD.Similarlyresearchalsoproceedsthroughaseriesofcasestudies(althoughtheprojectteamandtopicremainsstablethroughout).ThesecollaborationsareformedduringafirstMResyeartogetherwithaprojectthatservesasapilotforthePhDthatfollows.AttheRCAtheCXhasbeenacatalystforthedevelopmentofanecologyofdesignandinnovationresearchactivities.IthasalsoprovidedacontextwithinwhichtofocustherecruitmentofindustryfundeddesignandcommunicationinnovationPhDstudents,andtocriticallyexaminecross-sectorcollaborativeresearchandknowledgeexchangepractices.AgrowingnumberofdoctoralstudentshavejoinedtheCollegewithfundingfromindustrypartners(e.g.Microsoft,Pearson).BuildingontheexperienceofoperatingtheCXPhDmodel,thesestudentsareworkingwithacademicandnon-academicpartnerstodeveloptheirPhDsthroughbothsmallandlargescalecollaborativecross-sectorprojects.AtLancasterthenewsuccessofPhDswithinCXhasbeenusedasamodelforfurtherresearchprojects.Forexamplethe£1.2millionAHRCprojectLeapfroghasafundedPhDthatmovesbetweencollaborativeprojectsandhigher-leveloverarchingresearch.Thismodelisalsoprovingattractivetodoctoralcandidatesthatwanttoundertakeresearchwithahighdegreeofimpact.ForexampleinadditiontotheLeapfrog-fundedPhDthatprojectalsohasaselffundedPhDlookingforacollaborative,externallyfacing,highImpactPhDexperience.

ThroughtheirinvolvementwithCX,micro-businessKinichohavebeenabletodeveloptheirIcosahedronSoundSystem,exploreartisticapplications,andshowcaseitsvaluetomusicians,artists,producersandthegeneralpublic.KinichoisprincipallyStefanKazassoglou,amusicproducer,soundrecordingengineer,andcomposer.Followingtheclosureofhispreviousbusiness(BinarycellStudios),StefanfoundedKinicho(“kineticaudio”)asasmallbusinesswithinFACTtodevelophisinterestsinspatialisedsound.Recently,thisworkincludedStefan’sdevelopmentoftheIcosahedronSoundSystem–anarrayof20loudspeakersandassociatedsoftwarethatenablestheplaybackandspatialmixingofthirdorderambisonicsoundrecordings.

Inearly2015StefanjoinedconversationsbetweenNewcastleUniversityandFACTLiverpoolaboutdevelopingacollaborativeproject,initiallybasedaroundacontributiontoFACT’s“BuildYourOwn”programmeofevents.Throughthesediscussions,the“SoundSpaces”CXprojectdevelopedwhereprojectcollaboratorsjointlyexploredtherecordingandrepresentationofsonicspacesusingavarietyoftools,notablyincludingStefan’sIcosahedronSoundSystem.FundingfromCXhasenabledStefanto:• Developalarger,moreadvancedversionofhisIcosahedronSoundSystemina

modularformsuitableforusebyothers;• Createasetofimpulserecordingsthatcapturetheacousticcharacteristicsof

particularlocations,whichcanbeusedinaddingspatialeffectstorecordingsmixedintothird-orderambisonics(usingtheIcosahedronSoundSystem);

• ShowcasethepotentialoftheIcosahedronSoundSystemtomusicians,artists,producersandthegeneralpublicviatheSoundSpacesexhibitionandperformances.

However,thisprojecthasenabledmorethanthistechnicaldevelopmentworkanddemonstrationalone.SoundSpaceshasintentionallybeenacreativeandtechnicalcollaborationthroughout,andStefanhasworkedalongsideandincollaborationwithCXPhDstudentTimShaw,CXCo-InvestigatorJohnBowers,andCXKnowledgeExchangeAssociateSimonBowen.Thiscollaborationhasthenalsodrawnuponandexploredcurrentthinkingin(sound)artisticpractice,electro-acousticcomposition,publicparticipationinmaking,sphericalphotography,andtheinteractivepossibilitiesofspatialisedsoundandimage.ForStefanandKinicho,thathasmeant:• AuniquesoniccompositionfortheIcosahedronSoundSystem(byShawand

Bowers)thatexploresitspotentialasanartisticmedium,demonstratedduringtheSoundSpacesexhibition;

• DemonstrationoftheIcosahedronSoundSystemalongsidealternativeandcomplementaryapplicationsofsoundspatialisation(exhibitsbyBowers,ShawandBowen)withintheSoundSpacesexhibition;

• Afully-bookedpublicperformancebyBowersandShaw,andrenownedartistPhilipJeck,usingagallery-sizedIcosahedronSoundSystem(installedbyStefanatFACTforaparallelinstallation),whichbothdemonstratedthepotentialofthesystemanditscreativeapplication;

• FurtherworkthatshowcasesStefan’sexpertiseinthirdorderambisonics,includinganalbumofelectro-acousticcompositionsforthirdorderambisonicscurrentlybeingmixed.
