    UNIT DESCRIPTION

The YORK AirPak introduces a new level of quality, flex-ibility, and serviceability to the HVAC industry.

    QUALITY

AirPak units are available with single wall and/or doublewall panels. Panels are available with a variety of insula-tion. Double wall panels have a full 2 inches of insulationwith solid or perforated lining. The additional option of 4inch panels are available in discharge segments for acous-tical application. Insulation and liners can be mixed andmatched to meet a variety of applications.

The AirPak coil drain pan is designed to meet the intentof Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) requirements. The pan is 4inches deep with a V-shaped design that reduces stand-ing condensate. The pan has a full 2 inches of insulationto give the pan the thermal protection it requires. IndoorAir Quality drain pans (optional) are sloped in all direc-tions with a single drain connection to minimize standingcondensate. Auxiliary drain pans are available in everysection. Intermediate drain pans are provided on all cool-ing coils that exceed 48 inches in finned height.

    FLEXIBILITY

For maximum flexibility the AirPak is based on a seg-mented design concept. The unit construction is unit-ized, built as a single unit, for greater unit integrity. Theunit may be split per customer defined needs if required,to meet various shipping and job site requirements.

The unitized construction means that each unit is builtas a unit, not as a assembly of segments. This addsintegrity to the unit and decreases the opportunity forunit air leakage by greatly reducing the number of sheetmetal joints.

A complete line of Factory-Packaged Controls are avail-able with the YORK AirPak. Factory Packaged Controlsassures the customer of single source responsibility, lowerfirst cost and high quality. YORK International now fea-tures an RS-232 PROTOCOL that can communicate withany Building Automation System on the job site.

    SERVICEABILITY

The AirPak features unparalleled accessibility. All AirPakpanels (single or double wall) are completely removableas a single piece assemble. This eliminates the timeconsuming practice of removing the interior and exteriorpanels as separate pieces.

Access doors are available throughout the unit for ac-cess. The fan and filter segments come equipped withaccess doors as a standard feature.

The YORK AirPak can also be offered with Quick-Con-nect Fasteners on the side access panels on most unitsizes. The unique YORK panel latching system allowspanels to be removed and replaced in a matter of sec-

    UNIT DESIGN SUMMARY

    Unitized Construction

The design and application concept of the AirPak allowsthe designer the flexibility to arrange individual segmentsfor a variety of applications. Each unit is then engineeredand built as a single piece of equipment. This results insuperior integrity when compared to units utilizing mod-ules (sections) that are connected with sheet metalscrews to form a unit.

Each individual unit is custom designed to minimize thenumber of panels in the unit. This decreases the opportu-nity for air leakage and assures better unit integrity.

onds with a simple hand tool. The Quick Connect Fas-teners allow for easier and more complete unit access. The panels can also be removed in tight clearance areasthat do not permit normal door operation. This is an ex-clusive feature of the YORK AirPak.

    AIRPAK UNIT FRAME

    AIRPAK UNITIZED CONSTRUCTION

    Full Perimeter Base Rail Channel

The AirPak is completely supported by a full-perimeterbase rail channel. The base rail is constructed of heavygage galvanized steel and has intermediate cross- mem-bers for unit support. The base rail gives support to theinternal components and protects the unit during ship-ment and installation. The base rail also provides addi-tional height for job site trapping of condensate drain pans.

    Unit Frame

The rugged unit frame gives the unit industrial quality anddurability. The integral frame permits the unit panels tobe removed without affecting the integrity of the unit. Af-ter all of the panels have been removed, the frame re-mains to support the internal components.

    VARIABLE AIR VOLUME APPLICATIONS

Factory mounted variable frequency drives (YORK Air-Modulator) and variable inlet vanes are available with theYORK AirPak for Variable Air Volume Applications.

    YORK Air-Modulator (Variable Frequency Drive):

The YORK Air-Modulator (variable frequency drive) offersthe most efficient means of fan control for variable airvolume systems. The Air-Modulator varies the speed ofthe fan to match the VAV load requirements.

The Air-Modulator takes maximum advantage of the rela-tionship between fan speed and fan horsepower. Withthe Air-Modulator, any given reduction in fan speed re-sults in a cubic reduction in fan horsepower. For example,a 10% speed reduction results in a 27% fan horsepowerreduction!

The Air-Modulator offers the following benefits over vari-able inlet vanes and discharge dampers: Extended Equipment Life - soft start of motor and fan. Quieter Fan Operation - fan operating at reduced speed

and constant line of efficiency. Eliminates need for starter panels. Improved system control and response - DDC Controls

with LED Digital Display. Available on all unit sizes as a factory mounted op-

    tion. Proven Reliability.

YORK will balance the fan for the entire range of opera-tion (10 - 100% RPM) for added reliability. Actual fan turn-down will vary with fan type and selection.

    Variable Inlet Vanes

Variable inlet vanes are another method of energy effi-cient fan control. While the fan runs at a constant speed, the inlet vanes modulate the air entering the fan. Thisproduces a reduced air volume which results in loweroperating horsepowers.

Variable inlet vanes are available on all Airfoil fans, Ple-num fans and Forward Curved fans sizes 12 x 12 andlarger.

The vanes are located within each inlet cone of Airfoilfans, Plenum fans, and adjacent to the inlet ring of For-ward Curved fans. The vanes consist of a series of radialdamper blades which operate in parallel and are con-trolled by a common control shaft which extends to theoutside of the fan. Quality ControlYORK Factory-Packaged Controls assure you of gettinga higher quality control system, right from the factory. The control system is designed and mounted followingthe same stringent quality control standards by whichthe units are built.

Single Source ResponsibilityWhen an air unit with field-applied controls develops aproblem, getting some answers and action can be diffi-cult. The controls supplier believes the equipment manu-facturer is responsible, and vice versa. With YORKFactory-Packaged Controls there is only one companyto call YORK.

Full Service SupportBecause YORK Factory-Packaged Controls are an inte-gral part of the equipment, who better to troubleshootand service the system than a professional YORK Ser-vice technician. The YORK Service technician knows notonly the equipment and the controls hardware, but healso has a working knowledge of equipment applicationand operation. Every unit is backed by this kind of pro-fessional support.

Stand-Alone Or Network ControlYORK Factory-Packaged Controls offer you the flexibil-ity of stand-alone or network control. Each unit has anintegral time clock and a full-featured array of optimiza-tion and diagnostic function. Included with the controls isthe capability to tie into a YORK Integrated SystemsNetwork (ISN). INTEGRATED SYSTEMS NETWORK (ISN)

The YORK Integrated Systems Network (ISN) is thecomplete integration of airside, chiller, and building auto-mation controls. YORK Factory-Packaged Controlsmake it easy to upgrade from a group of air handlingunits operating individually to an ISN airside system, withall the units operating in concert. Thats because eachunit is able to share information with all the other units onthe network.

Theres no need to duplicate or replace existing sensorsand actuators. Instead, a twisted pair of wires connects

YORK INTEGRATED SYSTEMS NETWORK (ISN)INTEGRATED SYSTEMS NETWORK (ISN)CONTROL CENTER

each unit control center with the central control center, which can coordinate the operation of the entire air han-dling system. Other YORK airside and waterside equip-ment can also be integrated into the system.

No longer will HVAC equipment be responding as a col-lection of individual devices, but rather as a network theYORK Integrated Systems Network.

    NOTES:

    1. Standard media will be 60% CTC Virgin activated carbon.2. Standard media will absorb VOC (organic solvents and hydrocarbons), ozone, chlorine, ambient levels of sulfur

dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.3. Carbon panels filled with IVP (Improved Vapor Phase) are available as a SQ.4. Carbon Media Volume (Cu.Ft.) is based on nominal carbon panel dimensions.5. Carbon Weight is the nominal weight of the carbon in the tray.6. Filter weight is the weight of the filter tray with carbon.7. Ozone and VOC (Toluene) Efficiency is based on single pass and not indicative of total removal during recirculation.8. The efficiency is based on design media velocities listed in above table. While higher velocities reduce the efficiency

and service life, lower than design velocities will increase the efficiency.9. The average VOC efficiency is the time-averaged (arithmetic) efficiency based on 50% saturation service life.10. Ozone efficiency is constant with service time.11. All performance data listed above is based upon 500 FPM design face velocity across the coil.12. The design is based on a minimum residence time of 0.08 seconds with a resulting contact efficiency of 99.6%13. Contact efficiency is the percent of total contaminant molecules which have come in contact with the media.14. Removal efficiency is that fraction of the contaminant molecules which, once in contact with the media, are removed

by either physical or chemical means.

Unit SelectionSELECTING AN AIRPAK AIR HANDLING UNIT

AirPak air handlers permit selection of components tomeet individual job requirements. The wide selection ofbasic sections, optional components, coils, and acces-sories, enables the design engineer to obtain optimumperformance and temperature control.

Selection of the optimum system for each individual ap-plication requires only the following simple steps:Step 1 - Determination of Total Air Supply Quantity.Step 2 - Selection of Basic Unit Size and Arrangement.Step 3 - Selection of Cooling and/or Heating Coils.Step 4 - Selection of Accessories (filters, mixing boxes,

dampers, etc.).Step 5 - Selection of Fan, Motor and Drive.

    STEP 1TOTAL AIR SUPPLY QUANTITY

The total air supply quantity will be determined by thelargest of:a. Ventilation, make-up or pressurization requirementb. Cooling load (most frequent for air conditioning)c. Heating load (for heating only)d. Contaminant or odor removal

Ventilation requirements may be dictated by the localcode or ordinance, or established through the use of rec-ommendations in the ASHRAE Guide. Make-up air shouldat least equal total exhaust from the space, plus allow-ance for pressurization to minimize infiltration.

For comfort air conditioning, the total air supply quantitywill usually be determined by the simultaneous peak cool-ing load - calculated by established methods publishedin the ASHRAE Guide. The required air supply may bedetermined by the formula:

CFM = Sensible Space Cooling (or Heating) Load (BTU/HR)

1.08 x (Entering dry Bulb F Leaving dry Bulb F)

Depending on available cooling medium, air distributionconsiderations, and humidity control requirements, theCooling Temperature Differential is usually in the 15F to25F range.

Since Heating Temperature Differentials are frequentlymuch higher, the air quantity required for heating is usu-ally less than for cooling. For projects requiring heatingonly, the heating load may be the controlling factor. Heatlosses in long duct runs must be considered.

Humidity control, contaminant removal, or odor controlwill occasionally effect total air quantity.

STEP 2BASIC UNIT SIZE AND ARRANGEMENT

With a selection of five different fans for most units, thebasic unit size may be selected on the basis of coil facearea.

AirPak units for cooling and dehumidification service musthold the coil face velocity below the point of moisturecarry-over. The usual limit is 600 FPM. For lower life cyclecosts, 350-400 FPM velocity is recommended. For a VAVsystem at minimum part load conditions, it is recom-mended that coil face velocity not be allowed to fall below200 FPM for a water coil and 400 FPM for a refrigerantcoil. Use the next larger unit size if the approximate facearea falls between that of two units.

Refer to the Table on page 20 (Coil Data) for actual faceareas.

Approximate Total CFM Face Area = Desired Face Velocity

For heating and ventilation service, or for units involvingonly sensible cooling, face velocity is limited only by thehigh internal air pressure drop and resultant higher soundlevel of higher air flows. Selections are typically made inthe 800 to 1000 FPM face velocity range. The followingformula may be used:

Unit arrangement will be determined by system require-ments and space considerations.

    STEP 3COOLING AND HEATING COILS

Approximate Total CFM Face Area = Desired Face Velocity

Cooling and Heating loads may be determined by estab-lished methods as published in the ASHRAE Guide. Avail-able media will determine whether coils will be selectedfor hot water, chilled water, steam, refrigerant or glycol.

With loads determined and the medium selected, thecoil rows, fins, and circuiting can be selected from theappropriate Engineering Guides on YORK TURBOFIN andFREEFLOW coils or by a YORK Sales Engineer withYorkWorks. Coil sizes and face areas for each unit sizeare shown in the Engineering Data Section.

Internal face and bypass coil selection may be deter-mined using reduced face coils.

    STEP 4ACCESSORIES

A wide range of accessories are available to tailor theYORK AirPak to specific system requirements. Includedin the Accessories are: face and bypass dampers, mix-ing dampers, flat or angle filters, rigid or bag filters, airblenders, economizers, diffusers, discharges, accesssegments, etc.

    STEP 5FANS, MOTORS AND DRIVES

Total air system resistance must be determined for fanselection. Internal air flow resistance of the unit acces-sories can be determined from Tables on pages 38-45.Add the external system resistance (ref. ASHRAE Guide)

to the internal resistance to obtain total static pressurefor fan selection.

The nominal ranges of Total Static Pressure (TSP) for theavailable fan types are: up to 6" for FC, 9" for AF and upto 6.25" for SWSI fans. Casing limitations are 6" w.g.

Fan RPM and BHP is determined from fan performancecurves and tables using unit size, fan type, CFM andTSP. Correct fan RPM and BHP, if necessary, for air tem-perature and altitude, using factors given on page 35.Fan tables and curves do not include drive losses.

Refer to Form 100.09-EG1.1 (Forward Curved and AirfoilFan Curves and Tables) for individual AirPak units.
