Extraction & Recovery TestThese tests remove asphalt binder from the asphalt mixture by chemical solvent. They are useful for mixture investigation and research to measure binder properties after the construction or from in-place pavements. First the binder is “washed” from the aggregate using a solvent. Next the mineral fines are removed from the asphalt-solvent blend by a high speed centrifuge. Finally the solvent is removed from the binder using rotary evaporation unit, ASTM D5404.

Basic Mixture Technician Training3.5 day course | 28 PDHs
This course will educate and instruct inexperienced and experienced technicians on the methods and procedures for testing asphalt mixtures and aggregates. Students will be instructed on how to perform tests according to AASHTO and ASTM standards specific for Superpave Mix
Design. Our trainers will explain and demonstrate tests while students will be guided and enabled in the processes of aggregate sampling and batching, testing aggregate properties, mixing and compacting the asphalt mixture, and finally testing the compacted samples. Class size is limited to a maximum of six (6) students. Class time will be utilized to explain each test, calculations, and comparison of values for each test performed. Basic concepts of asphalt and aggregate mixtures will be taught and how they relate to the tests performed. Most of the course time will be spent in the laboratory practicing the detailed testing procedures.
This course is not exhaustive as compared to AI’s Mixture Design Training (MDT) in the processes of mix design and should be primarily used as a course to learn the methods and procedures for determining the volumetric properties of the aggregate and asphalt mixture.

Flexural Beam Fatigue (tests for brittleness)
Developed during SHRP, the 4-point beam fatigue apparatus allows one tomeasure the flexibility of a mixture usually through repeated strain cycles.Commonly used for understanding fatigue failure, it is not limited to onlyclassic pavement fatigue. This test is also used to understand the brittlenessof a mixture. At extreme high strains, this device is used to simulate the jointmovement of Portland cement concrete (PCC) joints. This is a destructive test.

Asphalt Mixture Performance Test AMPT (tests thickness design)
Dynamic modulus (E*) data is used in the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) for pavement thickness design and performance prediction.
Asphalt Mixture Performance Test AMPT (tests for rutting)
Flow Number test is a new and upcoming rutting test that seems to predict rutting potential well. This is a destructive test.
Indirect Tension Test (IDT) – Creep andStrength (low temperature crack prediction)
Also developed by SHRP, the IDT creep and strength tests measure the low temperature compliance (ability of a mixture to relax at cold temperatures) and the fracture strength of a mixture at temperatures well below freezing. This test is used to predict the low temperature cracking temperature of a mixture. The fracture strength is a destructive test.
Disk-Shaped Compact Tension (tests fracture energy)
The Disk-Shaped Compact Tension test, DC(t), is one of several fracture energy tests. It measures how much energy it takes to crack a sample. This test is run on 150mm (6 in) diameter lab samples or cores. It is one of the few tests that can measure mixture properties on cores as thin as 25mm (1 in). The DC(t) test is typically run at cold temperatures.

Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR)Also known as an oscillatory shear rheometer. Is used to measure the flowproperties of liquid asphalt binders at intermediate (i.e., 20ºC) to high (i.e.,64ºC) temperatures. Works by applying a sinusoidal shear stress to producea resulting shear strain. The complex shear modulus (G*) is a ratio of theapplied shear stress (t) to the resulting shear strain (g). The phase angle,d , (related to the time lag between input and output signals) provides arelative indication of the viscous and elastic behavior of the asphalt binder.
Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO)The RTFO simulates the ‘thin films’ of binder as they are exposed to heat and forced air during the mixing process and placement. A sample is poured into a cylindrical bottle and rotated horizontally at approximate mixing temperatures. As the bottle rotates and air is blown over the sample, new thin films are exposed simulating the binder coating on the aggregate during mixing.
Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) Asphalt binders are exposed to high temperature (100ºC) and air pressure (2.07 MPa) for 20 hours to simulate long-term aging. Resulting viscosity of the PAV-aged asphalt binder is approximately 8+ times the viscosity of the unaged asphalt binder.
Other tests include:Absolute Viscosity, Kinematic Viscosity, Apparent Viscosity of Non-NewtonianBitumens (ASTM D4957), Rotational Viscosity, Penetration, Specific Gravity,Softening Point, Flash Point, Solubility (ASTM D2042), Ductility, Elastic Recovery, Force Ductility, Screen Test, Thin Film Oven, Separation.

Direct Tension (DTT)Used to measure failure properties of an asphalt binder at low(i.e., -12ºC) temperatures. Provides an indication of the failure stressand strain of an asphalt binder. The Direct Tension Test was originallyused as a referee test when the m-value from BBR results passed butthe estimated stiffness failed and was between 300 and 600 MPa. If theaverage strain value from the DTT was 1% or more, it could be assumedthe binder was sufficiently elastic at the tested low temperature range.
Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR)Used to measure the flow properties of liquid asphalt binders at low(i.e., -12ºC) temperatures. Is analogous to the DSR – which is not used at low temperatures because of the torque capability of the equipment. Operates on engineering beam principles. A fixed static load is applied to an asphalt binder beam of known dimensions. The resulting deflection is measured and the flexural stiffness reported as a function of time. Provides an indication of the low temperature stiffness and cracking potential of an asphalt binder.

With these increasing costs, the value of our in-place materials rises, and they become more expensive to maintain at an acceptable level of service. Managers of these assets are seeing greater and greater value in using a pavement management system (PMS) to better maintain their system and do it in a more cost-effective manner. This Asphalt Institute webinar will provide the attendee with the principles of a PMS, the benefits that can be realized with its use, and limitations that need to be considered.

“As a person formerly in charge of setting up and maintaining AASHTO-accredited labs, I sincerely wish this
software had been available to me back then. It makes everything so much easier from required documentation
to automatic reminders regarding the scheduling of tasks like calibrating/verifying equipment.”
