Forms of Aid

Bi-lateral aid is given directly from one government to another, often ‘tied’.

Multi-lateral aid is given by major world alliances (e.g. UN, EU etc.), without strings attached.

Voluntary aid is given by charities (e.g. Blythswood, Oxfam etc.) - ‘Non-Governmental Organisations’ (NGOs)

United Nations Agencies

The UN organises its aid through specialised agencies

UNICEF provides emergency, or short-term, aid

The other UN agencies provide development, or long-term, aid to raise living conditions and standards
