AIESEC BARUCH RETREAT
FALL 2013
EVENT REPORT
SEPTEMBER 13-15, 2013
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
2
Purpose of the Event AIESEC Baruch hosts Retreat at the beginning of every semester. This semester, we hosted Retreat at a house in Hunter Mountain, NY from September 13-15, 2013. Specifically, we hold this event every semester as a way to educate our active members through a variety of educational, inspirational, and knowledgeable sessions throughout the weekend. We let them know the reality of AIESEC on the local, national, and international level. For the most part, CoBaLT and active members work together to prepare for the upcoming semester. Retreat is also a weekend where members get to relax before the brunt of the semester comes in, and get a chance to know each other on a more personal level: in between these knowledge sessions, CoBaLT also organizes a series of bonding sessions as a way to bring together the LC and unite as a family, not just as an organization. Moreover, the theme of Retreat this semester was Our Legacy, which entailed various sessions on describing the ongoing legacy of AIESEC Baruch and formulating actions steps on how to continue the legacy. Ultimately, we strive to make Retreat a constant tradition every semester, as it is a crucial time to kick-off the semester and get our members motivated and ready to work.

Letter from the Local Committee President
The summer was behind us and we needed to get back in the flow of things. Members’ motivation ranged, but we needed everyone to be ready to handle recruitment as well as their functional work. With the experience of organizing a successful Spring Retreat, the goal was to build on that using the feedback we received from members to make this retreat even better. CoBaLT 2013 had sessions that combined knowledge, inspiration, and reflection which all made people think on a deeper level. From the previous retreat, we learned that we had a good balance in terms of sessions, but lacked reflection time because we were short on time. With the success we had throughout the year we made sure to take some time in order to celebrate our accomplishments. The sessions during this retreat were more interactive and open to discussion. This was the first retreat where every member had something to say for each session. It ranged from serious discussion on relevance and necessity of good leaders to heart-warming lollipop moments that left people in tears. The conclusion of this retreat was bittersweet as it is my last one. It was comforting seeing everyone motivated and bonded like the family we are. I know for retreats to come they will only get better. Lastly, it is a vital part to our culture and will always remain a special honor to be able to organize it. AIESECly,
Dylan Bustillo

Return on Investment
Retreat contains a lot of expenses to account for, such as the house itself, supplies to facilitate sessions with, as well as food and toiletries for the weekend. Even though the costs of hosting this weekend is high, there is a high return on investment because this is an event that is often crucial for members who were newbies during the previous semester and provides them with the opportunity to come full circle and completely learn and appreciate the meaning of AIESEC. Many old members have stated that they have stayed with the organization for as long as they have because of Retreat. Not only does this weekend provide our members with valuable knowledge about AIESEC, but we also utilize this weekend to continue fostering personal and professional growth. Members come out of this weekend with a clear vision of what to expect for the semester, a clear reality of where we as AIESEC Baruch are standing, and most importantly: we all come out of this weekend as a unified family.

Challenges
Many of the challenges that CoBaLT 2013 had to face were a matter of logistics:
• Finding a house required CoBaLT to think on their feet, as the house that they originally planned to host Retreat in became unavailable two weeks before Retreat. However, CoBaLT coordinated together as a team to look for an ideal house that could fit about 25 people with a budget of $1,000. After a few phone calls and some lengthy negotiating, we were able to secure a beautiful house in Hunter Mountain that had all the amenities that we needed.
• Finding drivers posed to be the most prominent dilemma. We had 25 people coming to retreat, and initially, only three members were available to drive to retreat. But, we overcame this challenge as one of our members volunteered to drive if we supplied him with a rental car. The car was an extra expense on the LC’s end, but CoBaLT cared more about getting people to the house than incurring more expenses.
• Shopping for 25 people was also quite challenging, as CoBaLT did not have a budget or even a shopping list prepared. It was challenging to predict how much food we needed for 25 people for two days, so we ended up with a lot of extra food at the end of the weekend. Luckily, none of this food went to waste as some of our members were more than happy to take home some of the supplies.
