WAYS TO KEEP POSITIVE AND HAPPY

Life has a way of getting at us most of the time, you know, when things keep dragging us down. We all have those moments. Moments when we doubt our very selves, our purpose in life, and our possibilities. We tend to lose sight of how wonderful and beau-tiful we really are. I’m talking about those days when we hate our face, body and personality because something or someone tried to bring us down. But the thing is, how long will you continue to stay unhappy and wallow in sadness? How long will you mop around because someone would not accept you for who you are? I’m certain you have read or heard about Charles Swindoll and his ‘theory’ about life being 10 percent of what happens to us and 90 percent how we respond to it. This is true. The most part of our lives depend on how we choose to react to unpleasant news, situations or people we deem to be terrible or simply mean. It all depends on us. You can choose to be angry towards these things/people or choose not to allow negativity reach your door. I’m sure by now you are thinking about how sometimes you can’t help but get mad or sad about something. As funny as this may sound, you can fake to be happy and gradually, you will get to that point where you really don’t give attention to the negativity. Truth is, most of us dwell too much on our insecurities and overlook the good in us.You may not have that perfect model figure, the ideal family you wish for everyday of your life, or the car you want to cruise in yet but trust me, everyone has issues, even the rich. Yes, they have their fair share of it. Remember this is life and it messes us up regardless who we are. What I have come to realise with time is that some people are just good at hiding their pain while others are not. But don’t be deceived. Bottom line is we all have issues. So here are a few ‘hows’ of staying optimistic and happy.• Be nice to yourself: many a times we focus way too much on making others happy at the costly expense of our own happiness and worse is when it’s people who take us for granted. You need to treat yourself better. Pamper yourself. A little treat for yourself never hurts. Why don’t you travel to that place where you’ve always wanted o go? Be gentle with yourself. Forgive yourself when you mess up. Take yourself to a shopping spree if that makes you happy. Give yourself a gift when you achieve certain goals of yours, no matter how little those goals may be, like pigging out on a pot of chicken or eating a good bowl of ice-cream (not too often for weight watchers) or walking along a quiet beach, if that’s your thing. Basically, the purpose of these is to make you feel good about yourself as you go through the battles of life. Remind your-self of how good you are at something, be it sports, singing, the arts, swimming or events organisation etc.

• Be nice to others: It’ll surprise you how going out of your way to brighten someone else’s day would go a long way to make yourself feel good and happy. It could be just a smile. Your smile could be the only pleasant part of someone’s day, so go on and smile some more, no matter what looms ahead. Also, helping the aged or a child cross the street, helping someone with their grocer-ies, helping someone fix a flat tire or saying kind words or genuinely complimenting others makes you feel warm and happy inside. Try it.• Keep optimistic people around you: there are certain people who are mostly cheerful. I bet it kinda comes naturally to them. So instead of being a worry wart or a Negative Nancy, you should have an optimistic buddy who’ll constantly try to bring things into proper perspective for you till you finally learn to do that yourself. People like this have a way of seeing the best in any bad situation. They help you to cope and deal with harsh realities of life. Not that they don’t face bad situations themselves, it’s just that they don’t allow them to get them down.• Say positive things: instead of saying ‘’I don’t, I can’t, I won’t’’ you should say positive things instead. Example, instead of saying ‘’I don’t like this situation’’ you should be saying ‘’I’m sure this situation will be better if I...’’ We attract what we constantly say. The more negative our thoughts and words, the more of that we attract. If you keep saying things like ‘’I can’t win this competition’’, ‘’I can’t pass this exam’’, you end up subconsciously acknowledging that reality and your actions will veer in that direction. So instead, you should say ‘’my chances of winning this competition are great.’’ ‘’I can get that A in the exam.’’ With this, you inspire yourself to go for gold and not settle.• Optimistic Affirmations: you can put up little sheets of paper with nice things written on them on your dressing mirror, wardrobe, fridge, doors or in your car. These sheets should have positive and uplifting messages and serve as reminders of how talented, beautiful smart and amazing you truly are.Now go on ahead and create some happiness for you! Don’t wait for anyone to make you happy. Remember that happiness is a choice and you deserve to be happy, so make this choice. It’s a day at a time. That’s all we ever need.
