International Conference on: “Spirituality inManagement Education”

Gist of speeches of various speakers inInternational Conference on: “Spirituality inManagement Education” organized by GlobsynBusiness School and AIMS (Association of IndianManagement Schools) on 1st July, 2017 atGlobsyn Campus preceded by a Pre-ConferenceWorkshop on 30th June, 2017 at Globsyn Roomat BCCI (Bengal Chamber of Commerce andIndustry).

The topic “Spirituality in Management Education”can be segregated into three parts: Spirituality,Management, and Education.

Spirituality: From the Vedantic perspective,Spirituality refers to Consciousness. This is more

to do with Enlightened Self and is divorced fromReligiosity. Once Spirituality prevails, it will lead tounconditioned love, care, compassion, selfless-service, transcendence and a host of other goodthings. A tiny drop falling in an ocean weeps whilethe ocean smiles. Weeps because the drops think oflosing individuality, Smiles because the oceanthinks of regaining individuality. This is the fulcrumof enlightened self when it is present in anindividual.

Management: It is the process of moving fromDisorder to Order.

Education: In the words of Swami Vivekananda,Education is the manifestation of perfection alreadyin an individual.

Management Education ought to have twobuckets: contents of one caters to left-brainlearning like Finance, Statistics, QuantitativeTechniques and such other analytical things;contents of the other caters to right-brain learningwhich addresses emotions, feelings, moods, attitudes, beliefs, values, ethics. This is whySpirituality in Management Education is germaneto right-brain learning and makes the academic-delivery system wholesome and comprehensive.

As against the above backdrop, there are threecardinal areas, namely:

1. Care for Society,

2. Ethical Leadership and

3. Spiritual Culture.

Care for Society: The environment around us is ofprimary concern. Turbulence is the order of theday. A new acronym has come to the fore: VUCAwhich stands for Volatility, Uncertainty,Complexity, Ambiguity. Amidst this, managementeducation ought to cater to three things: the“knowing” part that is Knowledge, the “doing”part that is skills and the “being” part that isattitude. Students must learn to be altruistic andgive back to the society what society has given tothem. While in harness, after passing out frombusiness school, they need to remember the“Triple Bottomline Concept” of Managementwhich revolves around three Ps, namely, Profit,People and Planet. Bottomline in terms ofbusiness outcomes are definitely important andtangible parameters like ROI, ROE, RONA, EVA,P/E ratio should all be targeted at, without beingindifferent to render yeoman's service, reachingout to the less privileged and differently-abledpeople. The saying “Technology owes an apologyto Ecology” should be borne in mind. GreenHRM, Green Marketing and Conservation ofEnergy should be accorded priority so that thingslike Global Warming, Thinning of the OzoneLayer can be suitably addressed. The objectiveshould be to strive for attainment of the higheststate of human endeavour, that is, selfreliance/liberation from bondage/dependence onothers for lasting happiness ( ) throughblissstrenuous self effort ( ) using Ahimsa (srama non-violence) as a guiding value by each member ofthe community. As a result, overall peace andprosperity of society would also be ensured.

Ethical Leadership: Leadership is the ability toinfluence others. However, it should be practicedwith rectitude and propriety. The “Rajarshi Model”is a case in point. Here the Leader is both a Raja(King) as well as a Rishi (Sage). The King looks afterhis/her people, development and progress, whilethe Sage concentrates on Divine Voice. As R KTalwar, former Chairman of State Bank of India aptlyputs it, Sincerity+Silence+No Preferences = DivineVoice. This should make the work environment apleasant environment. Animosity, hatred, undulyblaming others, passing on the buck, anger withhowling and screaming to others should be ruledout. Not only this will create a work environmentabundant in peace and tranquility, it will lead tosustainability and curb high attrition-rates amongstemployees. In each fold within an organization, theleader ought to develop a layered structure ofregional heads, mentors and administrators toensure that members of the fold work properly andinteract with members within and outside the folds. The organization is to be guided by a chief whowould be the chief administrator of the system (likeCEO). A Code of Conduct should be set up whichshould be the day-to-day guide of governingprinciples.

Spiritual Culture: Culture consists of a set of valuesand beliefs which help to reinforce work-group andcommunities. Spirituality does not mean Religiosity.Spirituality promotes self appraisal system and theadherent is required to perform daily/periodic auditof his/her activities and take corrective measures. Both long term and short term objectives are to bepracticed. In business organizations, appraisal bythe immediate supervisor is on a daily basis and isensured periodically by unit/division/group head. The vows as indicated in spiritual culture areimportant in management of business organizationsand needed to be incorporated in the managementsystems. These refer to human resourcemanagement and development, accountingpractices and customer/supplier policies to be fairand friendly and transparent using norms andstandards like ISI and adherence to law of the landin purchases/sales/employee and governmentrelations and in sharing the surplus for socialresponsibilities. Even in the classroom context, spirituality can be practiced through effective body-mind practices incorporating yoga and meditation, respectively.

An international internship workshop wasorganized at the International School of BusinessResearch (ISBR) at its Electronic City campus onWednesday, 21st June 2017. Prof Ananth Rao,Dean, Dubai Business School, University of Dubaiwas the chief guest of the workshop. Prof Raohighlighted the importance of internships for B-school students and how mere classroom teachingwon't be sufficient for the new-gen B-schoolstudents.

“Classroom learning is not everything. Classroomlearning needs to be applied in the real world,”said Prof Rao. Speaking on the importance ofIndustry-Academia linkages, Prof Rao said,“Harnessing Industry-Academia linkages will go along way; students need a more hands-onapproach at problem-solving. A student needs tounderstand the functioning of a company closelyand come out with solutions for the variousproblems a company might be facing”.

“Rote learning, copying, reading and writing haveto be replaced by critical thinking; logicalreasoning and analytical thinking,” opined Prof

Rao. “Internships could be career placements forthe right candidates and Indian students are thebrightest students; they are hard working and theystand a good chance to get placed during theinternational internship” said Prof Rao.

Mr Abbas Ali, Head of Placements and CorporateRelations addressed the students and mentioned,“Internships are opportunities that need to beexploited for one's career growth. It gives aperspective into what sort of skills are required atthe global level. An internship is the first and mostimportant step in one's career.”

Internships are considered as an academicphenomenon in most universities which is a wrongconcept, opined Mr Ali. “Making studentsemployable and catering to the industry needs isimportant. Academics is one of the ingredients ofone's career. It is not 'the'ingredient.” said MrAli.

Prof Nanaiah Pattada, Head of Industry Relationssaid, “India will have a different kind of economicsystem, the overhaul is happening already. Thebiggest sectors for jobs in India would be theagriculture sector, retail, and health care”.

Speaking about how different organizations andjobs require different resume formats, ProfNanaiah said “Resumes need to be different and inaccordance with the organization or job oneapplies to. A resume for an internship has to bedifferent from a resume one uses to apply for a job.The format has to differ depending upon theneeds.”
