WE ARE ALL EVANGELIZERS I t ’ s a lways n ice to get an invi ta t ion , i sn ’ t i t? Whether i t be to a d inner , a par ty , a wedding , or whatever , i t ’ s a warm fee l ing to know that someone wants our company at an impor tant event . We are moved when we know someone cares - when someone loves us enough to wants us to share an important day wi th them. Invi ta t ion i s a t the core o f evangel i zat ion, and Dea-con Ken Pr iess f rom Bur ton te l l s a wonder fu l story o f inv i ta t ion in the Apr i l i s sue o f Fa i th magazine: At Ho ly Redeemer, we have an outreach food pantry . About a year ago, a man came to get food. Someone at the outreach o f f i ce inv i t -ed h im to our community lunch for those who may be homeless or s t ruggl ing and could just use a good meal wi th f r iendly people. He l i ked what was go ing on there , so even when he d idn’ t need food f rom the pantry , he came back every week to be wi th us . One day at that lunch, someone inv i ted h im to a nondenominationa l pra i se and worsh ip serv ice we have on Sundays . When he at tended th i s event , someone invi ted h im to A lpha , where he had a pro found encounter wi th the Holy Sp ir i t . By the next round o f Alpha, he was lead ing and, through those exper iences , was forming re la t ionships wi th peop le o f the communi ty and par i sh . Someone invi ted h im to th ink about becoming Catho l ic . Hi s in i t ia l response was , “Are you k idd ing?! ” Wi th t ime, he accepted the inv i -ta t ion to go to RCIA, which he s tar ted thi s past fa l l . There were at least three peop le f ighting to be h i s sponsor . He i s coming in to the Church thi s Easter , and we are a l l so exc i ted. I f you ask him, he’ l l exp la in that no one forced h im, but many peop le extended inv i ta -t ions a long the way. He sa id he found something in the Church that he ’d never found h i s whole l i fe . Every Chr i s t ian i s ca l led to constant ly invi te – i t i s par t o f our miss ion . The word “ inv i te/ invi tat ion” i s used seven t imes by Deacon Ken be-cause he ’ s try ing to show us how a s ingle invi te set up a ser ies o f invi tes that led to one man’s dec i s ion to jo in the Catho l i c Church. I t ’ s not a co inc idence that h i s in i t ia l search for food for bas ic sustenance wi l l cu lminate in h i s recept ion o f the Euchar i s t - sustenance for e terna l l i fe . In hi s ar t i c le “We are Al l Ca l led to Constant ly Inv i te , ” Deacon Ken notes that “The courage to inv i te comes from prayer . Prayer i s the core o f a l l o f evangel izat ion. ” Hi s s tory o f one man’s journey shows how God works -we do the inv i t ing and he does the conver t ing . Our ro le in evangel i zat ion i s to s tar t the process , but on ly the Lord can f in i sh i t . We have several adul ts and ch i ldren coming in to ful l communion wi th the church at next Saturday’ s Easter Vigi l and , as usual , the evangel i zat ion team hear t i ly invi tes the communi ty to share in th i s wonder ful ce lebrat ion . In the meantime, pray for them and welcome them in as S t . Joe par i shioners. They have answered an invi te , but i t ’ s up to us to welcome them to the fami ly and make them fee l a t home. Perhaps that wi l l l ead them to inv i te someone e l se who can jo in us next year . —By the Evangel i zat ion Team

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT

This weekend we participate in the proclamation of the passion and death of Jesus according to the Gospel of Mark. In the extended version of this weekend’s Gospel reading, Jesus is at Gethsemane, praying to his Father, in much emotional distress. He knows he can save himself. He can escape over the Mount of Olives in the dead of night and make his way safely into the Judean desert. Instead, Jesus chooses obedience to his Father and waits for his persecutors. As Saint Paul puts it in the second reading, Jesus is “obedient to the point of death.” Jesus’ obedience is a lesson for those who are good stewards of their life in Christ. Let us reflect on how we might be more obedient to the will of God instead of our own will. From International Catholic Stewardship Council

Do you at times feel like your prayer life is just empty words?

Does your spiritual growth seem at a stand still? Would you like to share some of your thoughts on these topics with someone but are hesitant to bring them up with friends? Then you might benefit from meeting with a spiritual director.

Do you need spiritual direction? Spiritual direction is a process of seeking to understand and follow God's will in all aspects of your life, especially relating to your life of pray-er and service. Spiritual direction is NOT psychological, pastoral or crisis counseling. If you would like help in discerning where the Holy Spirit might be working in your life, spiritual direction could be the answer for you. Spiritual direction will be availa-ble by appointment on Tuesdays from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Thursday's from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Appointments can be made for other times. Call 517-242-4850 (Linda Kurncz) to arrange the best time for you.
