One need only glance briefly at today’s readings to realize that the liturgical year is drawing to a close. These readings are visionary texts describing the end times. Jesus’ exhortation in today’s Gospel alerts us to the importance of heeding his words: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” As the liturgical year begins to draw to its conclusion, let us absorb the living word of God proclaimed in the midst of God’s people. THE FINAL WINNERS The good news of the readings today is that God wins in the end. Despite the evil of the world, vast amounts of suffering, and the upheavals of nature, God’s goodness will be victorious. This news gives us great cause for hope.
The people of Daniel’s day lived during a difficult time. They were subjects of a harsh ruler, but Daniel encouraged them. He told them of a dream in which the servant of God, Michael, would protect them, but only after they went through a terrible period of anguish.
Like Daniel, Mark assured the people of his time that God and good would win. It was during this period that early Christians lived in a time of oppression and persecution by the Romans. Mark said there would be pandemonium and disorder. Stars would fall from the sky and the earth would shake violently. After all this chaos, however, the Son of Man would appear once again.
Mark gave the people hope. If they knew something so wonderful could come from something so catastrophic as what he described, then surely they could survive with hope the misery of their current plight under Roman rule.

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Baptism Registered parishioners should contact the office for instruction. This should be done at least six months before the birth of your baby.
Marriages Registered parishioners should contact the parish office at least six months in advance of making marriage arrangements.
Sick Calls Please contact the parish office if you need a priest to come to your home to anoint you, or to be anointed at a weekday Mass.
If your child or children have reached the age of 21 and are away at school or no longer residing with you, please encourage them to register at a parish where they currently reside. Establishing church membership is very important. Should they be asked to serve as a
Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor, their parish of residence will need to verify their church membership and attendance and provide them with the required documentation. Please feel free to call the parish office at 746-9422 if you have any questions.

RCIA Anyone interested in becoming a Catholic or learning more about their Catholic Faith are invited to call the parish office to register for RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) classes. Classes are on Thursdays at 6pm in the Bethlehem Room.

The Evening Bible Study will resume Monday, November 16, with a study of The Eucharist in Scripture. As Catholics, the Eucharist is a key point of our faith. This study emphasizes the importance of meals shared in faithful fellowship as part of our covenant relationship with God. Come and learn how Old Testament meals and promises provide the foundation for gospel meals with Jesus, the “breaking bread” found in Acts, and Jesus as the Bread of Life. This is a 6 week study, and will end before Christmas.

The December Board Meeting will be held on December 8th at 10:00, in the Loyola Room, in the Parish Hall. The Baby Jesus Luncheon will be held on December 10th, 2015 at Citrus Hills Country Club. The Rosary will be recited at 8:30, followed by the Mass at 9:00. This is a special Mass for all the children that have passed away, born and unborn. We are in need of Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion to the Homebound especially for our registered parishioners who reside in the Citrus Hills, Hernando and Homosassa areas. If you would like to join this rewarding ministry and learn more about the requirements, please contact the parish office for more information.
Attention Parishioners....We desperately need Ushers for some Masses. Are you willing to give us 20 minutes before the mass starts, and a few minutes after Mass. We can use 7 more USHERS to cover our Masses on the weekend, and any special Holy Days. The Ushers that are needed are 2 for the 4PM----2 for the 6PM---- and 3 for the 11:30AM Mass.

St. Scholastica Giving Tree
In our second reading
from Hebrews, we see that when Jesus allowed himself to be crucified he was actually being a priest, offering himself for the sins of the world. After giving his life for us, he takes his place as God’s equal. He is now the eternal Priest, so all clergy since the time of Jesus are visible signs of that priesthood.
When we celebrate the Eucharist, Jesus’ sacrifice is there. We are present at his death and resurrection, without needing a flux capacitor or a time warp. His sacrifice is an eternal one, redeeming all past and future sins. So if you have come back to church after being absent for years, God has already offered you forgiveness.
The Eucharist also reminds us that Jesus is present in glory, with us always, sharing his priesthood with all the baptized. We can show God’s mercy by forgiving each other. Since Jesus lives in us, we offer our lives as sacrifice for sins. Does that mean we are supposed to seek ways to suffer? No, it means the suffering we cannot avoid can become our offering to God, a way to take up our cross as Jesus did, and a way to experience God’s power in our weakness.
At the Eucharist, we pray with the priest, “that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God…” All the sacrifices we make, from accepting serious illness, to giving up something for Lent, are ways we take part in the priesthood of Christ. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Pregnancy & Family Life Center of Citrus County would like to thank all of the generous parishioners of St. Scholastica Parish who gave money and items on Make a Difference Weekend. The response was overwhelming! Among the items donated were 82 dozen of diapers, 40 packs of baby wipes, 8 new outfits, blankets, 4 bags of gently used clothing, an umbrella stroller and a car seat, along with $54.00. All of the items were greatly needed and will help the Center help families. Thank you so much for your continued caring and giving spirit!

Seek wholeness through the healing love and mercy of God. Through Project Rachel you can begin your confidential and non-judgmental journey to healing. Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreats are schedule for Nov. 13-15, 2015 (English) and Jan. 15-17, 2016 (Spanish).
In addition, a new post abortion support program called “Living Well” is scheduled to begin Thursday, Nov. 19th from 7:00 pm till 8:30 pm at the St. James Chapel at the Bethany Center and continue every Third Thursday of the month throughout the Jubilee Year of Mercy. This is a monthly support group for those impacted by abortion.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Eastern Christians developed very different traditions for confessing sin. They see the priest as a witness to God’s action, a physician, if you will, rather than a judge. A person confesses sin to God while standing in front of an icon of Jesus, face to face. Without a grill, in the full light of day, near a table with an open Gospel book, the penitent asks the Lord for mercy. A priest standing to the side might offer counsel and confirm God’s gift of forgiveness. Rather than list sins and offenses, an Eastern Christian is more likely to speak of a disposition of heart toward God and neighbor, and the desire to forgive those who have wronged them. Remarkably, although only a priest can pronounce the prayers of forgiveness, lay people, including married men and women, single Christians, monks, and nuns, may witness the confession. This is akin to the ancient Celtic practice of a “soul friend” as a spiritual mentor. Bishops may bless anyone with sufficient theological knowledge and discretion to do this. Eastern Catholics in the United States have largely drifted away from this tradition and toward Latin Rite customs such as confessional screens, set formulas and prayers, and penances. “It’s going to get worse before it gets better” is a phrase that prepares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous physical or emotional energy on our part before we experience the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we know how long it will last and if we know that something better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while holding to the promise that awaits us is the message of this weekend’s readings. They point toward the promises of God’s kingdom that will come after the maelstroms and chaos of this world.
