Message from the President

Curtis J. Coe, CPG-06240 Fellow Members, Over the past couple of years, the Executive Committee has worked to revitalize and reshape the Ohio Section of AIPG. It has been the Committee’s objective to set up one-year and five year goals. One of the chief goals has been to continue to upgrade and use the Ohio Section website as a way to effectively communicate Section activities to the membership. The Section’s 2016 meeting schedule has been posted on the website for everyone’s reference. As always, all members are encouraged to attend section and Executive Committee meetings.

An active blog has been set up on the website so that members can share important geological information with the membership and the public. We want to make the website a source of reliable geological information that the membership and the public at large can rely on. Therefore, we would encourage all members to contribute to the Ohio Section blog. I am pleased that both Wright State and the Ohio State student sections are also contributing articles to the blog. Blog posts should be e-mailed to Brent Smith ([email protected]) or Carol Swinehart ([email protected]). The next goal of the executive committee is to raise money and reach out to the membership. Members of the Business Development and Membership Committee have been very active in raising money and contacting members around the State of Ohio. We want to use the money to support the section activities in every way possible. Over the past couple of years, the money has been used to support student sections and field trip activities. We would like to use the money to support section activities in an area near you. So please speak up and let us hear for the membership on activities you would like us to support. A more long-term goal is to provide continuing education to the membership. We would like to sponsor short course activities that can be used to supply CEUs to the membership. In the past, we have done this through sponsorship of the Utica Shale Conference. In addition, it has been a continuing goal to have stronger ties with all Ohio based geological societies. Over the past years, the Ohio Section has continued to work closely with the Ohio Geological Society. We cosponsored and advertised many of the OGS, meetings, field trips, and workshops. Mentorship of student members is another goal of the executive committee. Over the past, few years we have sponsored student field trips and invited students to visit various consulting companies. Over the next couple of years, we would like to sponsor speakers that would be willing to travel to student section meetings to speak on various topics and to share work experience with the student chapter members. If you are interested in being a mentor and speaking at a student chapter meetings, please let the executive committee know of your interest. Our first meeting of 2016 will be held at Wright State University (WSU). The WSU student chapter has set up and organized the meeting. Dr. Alan Schmidt will be talking on Boulders, Bedrock,

and Brewing Water: How Geology has influenced the History of the Dayton Area. We would encourage all members in the Dayton Area to attend the meeting. The executive committee will be carpooling from Columbus over to Dayton. Let us know if your need a ride from Columbus. For details on future meetings and field trips, please follow the adventures of the Ohio Section on the website. Curtis J. Coe, CPG 6240 2016 AIPG Ohio Section President

Farewell Address from the Past President

Tom Jenkins, CPG-07892 Ohio Section AIPG had a very productive year in 2015, thanks to the coordinated efforts of a group of dedicated committee members. I want to thank all the executive committee members for their hard work. It is very encouraging seeing the organization grow and succeed. We had a great year that included an excellent conference on shale hydrocarbons in the spring, several great dinner presentations and well attended field trip at Shale Hollow Park. It has been an honor to assemble with dedicated, goal-oriented professionals working to achieve a common outcome. I encourage other AIPG members to attend the

Executive Committee meetings and get involved. Although participation in the Ohio Section committees does require some time and effort, the benefits certainly make it all worthwhile. I will continue to be involved with the Ohio Section and look to continue to expand Ohio Section activities in the future. As in the past, my message to the membership is to get involved with AIPG, come to an executive committee meeting, and join in the process. I am confident that you will benefit from your participation, most likely in ways that cannot be foreseen. Thomas Jenkins, CPG 7892 2015 President

Boulders, Bedrock, and Brewing Water: ow Geology Has Influenced the History of Dayton

by David Schmidt, Ph.D., Wright State University

ABSTRACT

The geologic resources of the Dayton, Ohio area have been an essential component of the region’s economic history. Local bedrock, consisting of relatively flat-lying Paleozoic strata, includes dolostones of the Dayton Formation that were well suited to architectural and engineering applications before concrete became widely available. More recently, high-purity limestones of the Brassfield Formation have been important source of concrete for local infrastructure. Following the retreat of epicontinental seas during the late Paleozoic, the bedrock surface in the Dayton area underwent a long phase of weathering and erosion that incised a large river valley. This pre-glacial valley and the surrounding bedrock surface are overlain by a complex arrangement of sediments derived from the erosion, transport, and deposition by ice and meltwater associated with glaciation during the Pleistocene Epoch. Flow of glacial meltwater established many of the modern fluvial systems in the area, which provided routes for human

migration and travel. Local creeks and rivers also provided water for powering mills and factories and for supporting the Miami and Erie Canal, which was an important transportation route between Cincinnati and Lake Erie during the Nineteenth Century. The region’s buried preglacial valley is one of the largest and most productive aquifer systems in the world. This Great Miami Buried Valley Aquifer System was a determining factor in Dayton’s rise as an industrial powerhouse during the Twentieth Century and is viewed by many local business and civic leaders as a key resource for the potential economic revitalization of the area. PRESENTER

David Schmidt is Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Wright State University, where he recruits and advises undergraduate students, manages adjunct faculty, supervises student research, teaches classes, coordinates internships, and performs other administrative services. David grew up exploring the formerly undeveloped landscape south of Dayton and puzzling over its rocks and fossils. This interest in geology led him to complete his B.S. and M.S. at Wright State University and his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University, where his dissertation research focused on the paleontology and sedimentary geology of Ohio and Indiana. David is a lifelong resident of the south Dayton area and serves on the Board of Directors of the Oakwood Historical Society.

Ohio Section 2015 Annual Meeting and Dinner

Presentation Revisited

Feature Topic: The Sea Without Fish: Life in the Ordovocian Sea of the Cincinnati Region

Presented by: Dr. David L. Meyer and Dr. Carlton E. Brett The Ohio Section held its annual meeting and dinner presentation for 2015 at La Scala Italian Bistro in Dublin on Thursday, November 12th. The event was sponsored by ALS Laboratories. The event was well attended, with a total of 51 people including members, spouses and 11 Wright State University students. Following a lively social hour, attendees enjoyed a fine Italian buffet-style dinner that included lasagna, chicken Marsala, perch, and various sides. Throughout the evening door prizes were awarded, which included coffee mugs, beer glasses, books, a La Scala gift card courtesy of our sponsor ALS, and an AIPG shoulder bag. Following dinner, President Tom Jenkins gave a brief recap of the year and announced the results for the election of 2016 AIPG Ohio Section Officers: President-Elect: Brent Smith (CPG No. 11130) Treasurer: Shavonne Gordon (CPG No. 11411) Secretary: Colin Flaherty (CPG No. 11465) Members-at-Large: Chris Everett (CPG No. 10839), Karen Royce (MEM No. 0330), and

Thomas Swinehart (CPG No. 3627)

Congratulations to each of you on your election and here's to a prosperous 2016! The Section was pleased to host Dr. David L. Meyer and Dr. Carlton E. Brett of the University of Cincinnati, who presented The Sea Without Fish: Life in the Ordovician Sea of the Cincinnati Region. The keynote presentation, The Sea Without Fish: Life in the Ordovician Sea of the Cincinnati Region, was presented by Dr. David L. Meyer and Dr. Carlton E. Brett of the University of Cincinnati. The presentation was split into two halves, with Dr. Meyer first discussing the biodiversity that originated during the Upper Ordovician and chronicling the extent and characteristics of the sea which covered what would become the area that now encompasses the Cincinnati Arch. Dr. Brett followed with an additional entertaining presentation discussing additional characteristics and significance of the geology of this area, including a closer look into the depositional environments and origin of the specific stratigraphic record observed in the field today. Overall, the presentation explored the major reasons for the significance of the Cincinnatian to geology and paleontology. This significance was based upon four underpinnings: evolution, environment, preservation, and geologic history. These factors are connected to the global significance of the Ordovician Period in Earth history that has been the focus of an international research effort in recent years. The presentation also included an overview of some of the major groups of marine animals that inhabited the Cincinnatian sea and a reconstruction of the marine

ecosystem that set a pattern for the ensuing Paleozoic. Specifically, it was emphasized that, although many aspects of the Cincinnatian ecosystem can be understood in light of the present-day oceans, the ecological structure of the Cincinnatian was unique and lacked many modern counterparts. Special thanks to Dr. Meyer and Dr. Brett on an excellent and informative

presentation.

AIPG Ohio Section Membership Breakdown

Contributed by Member-at-Large Tom Swinehart, CPG-03637 In preparation for the long range planning of future AIPG Ohio Section activities, the composition of Section membership was evaluated to better understand the distribution of membership within the State of Ohio. As a result of the study, of the 535 total members, 226 are CPGs, 33 are Professional Members, 3 are Associates, 8 are Young Professionals and 265 are Student Members. There are a total of 120 companies and government agencies which employ our members. The students represent 23 colleges and universities. As can be seen on the distribution map showing the locations of the 2015 members in Ohio, they are concentrated in the major population areas throughout the state. It is a goal of the Executive Committee to use this information to better serve the membership throughout the state.

Another objective of the Executive Committee is the mentorship of student members. During the last few years the Section has sponsored several student field trips and activities and invited students to visit various consulting companies to learn more about the profession. Over the next few years the Section would like to sponsor speakers that would be willing to travel to student section meetings to speak on work-related topics and share experiences. If you are interested in volunteering for these types of activities, or would like to assist an Ohio college or university geology department in the formation of an AIPG student chapter, please contact any of the Executive Committee members listed on the front page of this Newsletter or on the website. Using the map and the member breakdowns, the planning committee can plan for future meeting locations to reach out to as many members as possible.
