Jeffrey Kahane in Milwaukee and New YorkKahane made his piano-recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 1983 and his conducting debut at the Oregon Bach Festival five years later. He’s conducted a number of American orchestras, often leading concerto performances from the keyboard. He’s music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and had a long association with the Colorado Symphony. He’ll be featured on symphony broadcasts on two consecutive evenings in early April: conducting the Milwaukee Symphony and playing Beethoven with them, then performing with the New York Philharmonic, a fantasy for piano and orchestra that Andrew Norman composed especially for him.

The CSO Plays Sibelius’ Finnish EpicFinnish-born guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the Chicago Symphony in Sibelius’ cycle of tone poems variously called Four Lemminkainen Legends or Four Legends from the Kalevala. The Kalevala is usually described as Finland’s national epic poem, but it hasn’t come down to us in written form from ancient times. Rather, it was compiled in the early 19th century by a physician and scholar named Elias Lönnrot (1802-1884), who created fifty separate poetic cantos using traditional oral folklore and mythology that he collected during a long series of field trips. Many of the tales are about the super-hero Lemminkainen, including his adventures with the maidens of Saari and on the island of the dead. Sibelius chose four Lemminkainen stories for his cycle. The best known is The Swan of Tuonela. Our special includes the complete work, plus other Sibelius and some Mozart, Bartok, and Anna Clyne.

Collectors’ Corner Spotlights Jorge GrundmanJorge Grundman (b. 1961) is a Spanish composer, musicologist, performer, and teacher who was trained at the Madrid Royal Conservatory. His initial success came as a pop musician and songwriter. His record label and foundation, Non Profit Music, promotes contemporary music of the kind he calls “consonant” – new music that is tonal and communicates with audiences. His music has been performed by groups including the national orchestra of Ecuador and the Brodsky Quartet, but he is not well known in the United States. Henry Fogel will attempt to remedy that oversight during this month’s sequence of Collectors’ Corner.

Live from WFMT: Haymarket Opera PreviewKerry Frumkin welcomes Craig Trompeter and his colleagues from Chicago’s Haymarket Opera Company to preview their May performances of La Calisto by Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676). Regarded as an important successor to the pioneering Claudio Monteverdi, Cavalli composed a number of operas for Venetian theaters that are little known today. La Calisto, like many of them, reinterprets ancient mythology, in this case a tale from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, about the god Jupiter and his love for the nymph Calisto, who follows the cult of the virgin huntress Diana. Haymarket’s website tells us the libretto brings in a number of comic subplots for which Cavalli provided lyrical and inventive music. Some of it will be emanating from WFMT’s Levin Studio.

Music of the Sephardim on FiestaSefarad is the name the Spanish Jews gave to Spain, and thus they have become known as Sephardic Jews or Sephardim. Expelled from Spain in the late Middle Ages along with the Muslims – or Moors – the Sephardim took their culture and their language, Ladino, to North Africa, Greece, Turkey, and the Netherlands. Then over these past several hundred years, many Sephardic Jews emigrated to the New World, especially the USA, Mexico, Argentina, and Uruguay, and there is also a Sephardic community in Israel. Music is a major part of Sephardic tradition, and Elbio Barilari will be sampling it for us.
