Air pollution and road safety: Should schools close their roads to traffic?

Forty schools around the UK closed their roads to traffic this week.

It's all part of a campaign by the charity Sustrans called the Big Pedal Challenge.

The challenge aims to encourage more young people to cycle, walk and scoot to school and will see more than 2,200 schools taking part.

As part of the special day, some schools went further and closed their roads to traffic.

It's to help make children feel safer playing out and riding bikes and is also an effort to try to cut pollution.

Experts say adults leaving car engines running when you are dropped at school causes too many fumes to be released into the air which can damage lungs.

Winnie the Pooh: Fire under control in Ashdown Forest where AA Milne book set

Two large fires that broke out in the forest made famous by AA Milne's Winnie the Pooh novels, have now been brought under control. More than 35 hectares of woodland in Ashdown Forest in East Sussex was affected, with at least 65 firefighters tackling the blazes.

Fire crews are also tackling a huge blaze on Saddleworth Moor in West Yorkshire, so big that people have described it as "apocalyptic". It comes as the UK broke the record for the warmest winter day for a second time.

The fire on Saddleworth Moor started at about 19:30 on Tuesday evening, and covers about 1.5 sq km of land near Marsden.

Page 5: Air pollution and road safety: Should schools close their ...  · Web viewinto the air which can . damage. lungs. So do you think it's a good idea to stop cars going so close to

Laura Boocock, West Yorkshire Fire Service's incident commander, said it was "one of the biggest moorland fires we've ever had to deal with". No one has been injured, but five crews and two specialist moorland firefighting units stayed at the scene of the fire overnight.

BBC Yorkshire climate correspondent Paul Hudson said that, like much of the UK, the region had faced unseasonal winter temperatures. "There's been a prolonged abnormally warm spell and we've also had an exceptionally dry start to 2019. The temperature on Wednesday is also set to be pretty similar."

What weird object has been discovered in seal poo?

It's everyone's worst nightmare - having your prized USB stick eaten by a cheeky seal!

Wait, what?

Scientists in New Zealand have found someone's USB stick literally 'sticking' out of some frozen seal poo.

And, if that isn't enough, the memory stick still works and there's loads of photos and video footage on it.

Page 7: Air pollution and road safety: Should schools close their ...  · Web viewinto the air which can . damage. lungs. So do you think it's a good idea to stop cars going so close to

There's now a social media campaign to try and track the owner down!

New Zealand scientist, Krista Hupman, discovered the memory stick when she was looking through a sample of frozen Leopard Seal poo.

The poo is really useful to marine biologists who are monitoring the health of seals. It's often frozen and then de-frosted at a later date to be studied.

The sample of poo was from back in 2017 so it was really surprising when the USB was loaded onto a computer and was found to be still working.

The stick contained images of sea lions and a video of a mother playing with her baby.

The owner hasn't been found yet but the scientists hope they might be able to track them down via social media.

World's tallest moose statue: Who will be the winner?

Page 9: Air pollution and road safety: Should schools close their ...  · Web viewinto the air which can . damage. lungs. So do you think it's a good idea to stop cars going so close to

It's an argument that has made the people of Canada and Norway disagree, and it's all about the size of a moose statue. Yes, we said moose.

The two countries have locked horns in a battle to see which moose is bigger.

The unofficial title of "world's tallest moose statue" was snatched from a city called Moose Jaw, in Canada in 2015, when a sculpture 30 centimetres taller was erected in Norway.

Canadian locals only realised when resident Justin Reves set up a crowd funding campaign to take back the title for their statue called Mac.

He said: "The Norwegians deliberately and intentionally stole the title from us with the creation of 'Storelgen' - an ostentatious chrome moose made to be exactly 30 cm taller than Mac".

The city's tourism department says Mac is one of the most photographed roadside attractions in Canada and the mayor of Moose Jaw has even suggested putting skates on the statue!

4 things you never knew about coins

Page 11: Air pollution and road safety: Should schools close their ...  · Web viewinto the air which can . damage. lungs. So do you think it's a good idea to stop cars going so close to

With Chancellor Philip Hammond set to decide the future of 1p and 2p coins this week, see if you knew these financial facts!

We also want to know what you think about getting rid of the coins. Head to this article to have your say.

We've only had the coins for 48 years. The 1p and 2p coin first went into circulation on 15 February 1971 when the UK adopted a new decimal currency system.

The 1p coin is legal tender for amounts up to 20p - so you can only spend 20 1p at any one time in a single transaction.

This means shopkeepers don't have to take any more than 20 1p coins by law - anything over that amount is up to them.

The Royal Mint gives free silver coins when a royal baby is born. It's been a long-standing tradition to give a silver coin for good luck when a baby is born - and the Royal Mint have been doing just that. It gives babies born on the same day as a future monarch a silver penny engraved with the year of their birth.

Throughout history, offering a new born baby a silver penny was seen as a way to wish them wealth and good health throughout their life.

They're not copper!

The copper 1p and 2p coins aren't even really copper! When the coins were first minted in 1971, they were 97% copper, but that changed in 1991 when copper prices rose.

The new 1p and 2p coins are now only copper-plated and mostly made up of steel.

Women's Super League: Record crowd watch Arsenal take WLS title

Arsenal won the FA Women's Super League title on Sunday as they beat Brighton 4-0 at the Amex Stadium.

A record crowd of 5,265 people watched them secure their 15th WSL title with one game still to play.

They have been fighting off tough competition from Manchester City throughout the season, but the Gunners won 17 of their 19 league games.

Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema, who is the WSL top scorer, also won the award for best player of the season given out by the Professional Footballers' Association and voted for by her fellow players.

She scored 22 goals and provided 10 assists in her 19 appearances in the league.

In all competitions this season, she has scored 39 goals in 46 appearances.

Arsenal face rivals Manchester City in their final match of the season on Saturday 11 May.

The manager Joe Montemurro said: "It's an amazing achievement to win the league title, and doing so in the way we did it was very pleasing.

"Man City and Chelsea have set the bar over the past three or four years, and Arsenal need to be at that level."

Plastics: What you're doing to help during recycle week

This week is Recycle Week and we want to know how you're getting involved.

Plastics are used every day in lots of different ways but there is a problem once they've been used and thrown away.

The issue is that plastics don't break down or rot in the same way that other materials do. The pieces just get smaller and smaller.

It's thought that 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans every year.

Page 16: Air pollution and road safety: Should schools close their ...  · Web viewinto the air which can . damage. lungs. So do you think it's a good idea to stop cars going so close to

This can harm sea life and is very bad for the environment.

Governments and people around the world have started to take action to fix the problem. We want to know what you are doing and what you think of recycling.

Ice shelf melting 10 times faster than expected

GETTY

Scientists say a piece of the world's largest ice shelf is melting 10 times faster than expected.

The section of the Ross Ice Shelf, which is near the South Pole, covers 190,000 square miles - nearly the size of Spain.

Page 18: Air pollution and road safety: Should schools close their ...  · Web viewinto the air which can . damage. lungs. So do you think it's a good idea to stop cars going so close to

However, it is reducing in size due to the surrounding Antarctic Ocean warming up.

The shelf is several hundred metres thick, with 90% of the ice hidden below the sea level.

The team of scientists lowered equipment down a 260m-deep hole, measuring the water temperature, melting rates and ocean currents.

One of the scientists, Dr Craig Stewart from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand, says this could carry on getting worse.

"Climate change is likely to result in less sea ice and higher surface ocean temperatures in the Ross Sea, suggesting that melt rates will continue to increase" he said.

Beavers 'protected' in Scotland by laws on beaver dams

Page 20: Air pollution and road safety: Should schools close their ...  · Web viewinto the air which can . damage. lungs. So do you think it's a good idea to stop cars going so close to

There is some good news for beavers, as the species is now 'protected' in Scotland.

There is a new law which means it is now illegal to cull them or destroy their dams without a licence. It is hoped this could help them breed and thrive in the wild.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust, who are a conservation charity, say it's "an important step" to help beavers, which are the second-largest rodent in the world (the largest is the capybara).

Some Scottish farmers are worried about their crops because dam-building can cause damage to the area.

There are currently about 450 beavers in Scotland - in Tayside and mid-Argyll.

Disney parks to ban smoking and big buggies

If you are lucky enough to be planning a trip to Walt Disney World with your family this summer then you might be pleased to know it will be a smoke-free zone.

Smoking will be banned from 1 May at all Disney parks, including Walt Disney World, Disney Land, the water parks, and Downtown Disney in California.

People who want to smoke or use e-cigarettes now must do so in special areas outside the park entrances.

The new rule does not apply to Disneyland Paris, where there are still designated smoking areas in the park.

Disney say "the removal of smoking areas is intended to provide a more enjoyable experience for everyone who visits."

Another new rule might be interesting to you if you have a little brother or sister who often needs a nap during the day.

Disney are restricting the size of push chairs to make sure it's easy for all guests to get around.
