Air & Space Law:The Pressures of Success

Please join us at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee onOctober 3-6 for the ABA Forum on Air and Space Law’s 2007Annual Meeting and Conference. We have the great fortune tohave a quartet of aviation’s best who have agreed to sharetheir thoughts with us on the state of the airline industry andits future. The Hon. Jeffrey N. Shane, Under Secretary forAviation Policy at the US Department of Transportation, willopen our conference and will address the Secretary’s key initiatives for the coming year. Our luncheon keynote speaker,Fred Smith, is Chairman, President and CEO of FedEx Corporation, headquarteredin our host city of Memphis. As the head of one of the world’s largest airlines, and an innovator in thecargo business, Mr. Smith will offer a perspective on the industry that few others can match. Our thirdkeynote speaker will be the Hon. Marion C. Blakey, who is stepping down as Administrator of the FederalAviation Administration this September. As an executive who has led the fight to modernize America’sair transport infrastructure, Ms. Blakey can share with us the numerous policy issues and challengesfaced by her organization. We are privileged to have Philip Trenary, CEO of Pinnacle Airlines, also basedin Memphis, as our luncheon keynote speaker on Friday. He is a key player in the regional airline indus-try and a member of FAA’s Management Advisory Committee, and will have some unique insights on thechallenges his sector and the FAA are facing.

We also have a stimulating program in store. A top-flight group of panelists will discuss the pressureson both the aviation and space industries as they grow and evolve and examine the ways in which thosein the aviation and space industries are adapting to rapid change. We look forward to a spirited debateamongst the panelists and audience alike.

Our panels will cover a wide range of topics, including airline industry competition and structure, inter-national aviation developments, an overview of recent regulatory developments, new trends in aviationlitigation, and an analysis of recent environmental proposals. We will have breakout sessions coveringtopics in aviation finance, aviation security, space law, as well as a panel on the ethical issues facing avi-ation and space law practitioners. Our speakers include lawyers from both US and non-US governmentagencies and organizations, airlines, airports, industry creditors, and the outside lawyers who representthese many groups.

Finally, lest anyone think that the conference will be all work and no play, we have some great eveningevents planned, including a dinner at the National Civil Rights Museum, a late evening tour of the FedExhub, and an optional trip on Saturday, October 6 to Oxford, Mississippi to visit the historic Ole Miss cam-pus with the option of attending the homecoming football game against Louisiana Tech. A tour of theNational Center for Remote Sensing, Air, and Space Law and the University of Mississippi School of Lawis also planned.

We look forward to seeing you in Memphis!
