Researching Breaker VibrationThis handle design is based onresearch conducted by Sullair’sFrench operating unit, in associationwith the French government’s INRS(equivalent to U.S.A.’s OSHA).Evaluating the stresses of pavingbreakers then in existence, theteam found that the vibrations(often identified as kickback) camefrom pressure forces which act onboth the body and the hittingpiston of the machine. Researchshowed that breaker vibrations–ata rate of 1000 to 1500 perminute–are relayed throughmuscular contraction of the handsand arms to the rest of the body.

Finding the Ideal SolutionOver a period of years, the teaminvestigated various approaches toreducing the effects of breakervibration. Several prototypes werebuilt and tested as the effortfocused on developing a sturdierhandle while providing simple andprogressive start-up. The researchculminated in the design of theAnti-Vibration Paving Breaker.

A Hinged Handle and IsolatorsIn this tool, vibrations are reducedby crossed handles that swivel ontwo pins on either side of thebreaker head. The design providessufficient clearance while keepingthe handles compact. Two helicalsprings prevent direct contactbetween the handles and the bodyof the breaker. The tension of thesprings not only provides sufficientthrust when the breaker isoperating; it also allows the springsto act as efficient isolators.

Other Design ImprovementsThe new handle design led to otherdesign improvements. For example,in order to hinge the handlescorrectly, the breaker’shead–particularly the compressedair inlet– had to be completelyredesigned.

Power Through SimplicityThe handle suspension system isindependent and has no effect onthe breaker’s striking power. Basedon a “power through simplicity”concept, the striking system uses asingle piston that is guided throughthe entire length of the stroke.

No Tappet SystemUnlike conventional breakers,Sullair breakers have no multi-parttappet system. With fewer parts,wear is reduced and risk of airleaks is minimized. With no tappetsystem, which requires threeindependent impacts, noise is alsoreduced.

High Impact EnergyTests prove that these single pistonbreakers deliver more impactenergy, pound for pound, thanconventional breakers. The heavierlong stroke also reduces pistonspeed, thus extending the life ofthe tool.

Less Air NeededThe breaker’s direct impact pistondesign, non-corrosive distributionvalve and one-piece housingdramatically reduce airconsumption. As as result, moreAnti-Vibration Paving Breakers canbe operated from a singlecompressor.

ApplicationsThe Sullair MBT-6 backfill tamper is the ideal tool for compactingbackfill around utility poles,foundations and other structures. It quickly and efficiently compactsbackfill soil excavated to performservice line repair before patchingthe pavement.

Rotatable Exhaust DeflectorA durable molded exhaust deflectoraims the exhaust away from theoperator.

Standard Steel ButtA 6" diameter solid steel butt isstandard. Optional butts for specialapplications are available. The buttis held onto the piston rod with ahex head clamp screw for ease ofassembly and removal.

Chrome PlatingSmooth, chrome plated barrelpromotes easy clean-off of backfillmaterials.

Minimal Lubrication RequiredWith the design features andpremium materials of the MBT-6,normal oil carry-over from thecompressor, combined with themoisture in the air, will supplysufficient lubrication under normaloperating conditions.

No Packing AdjustmentThere is no packing adjustmentnecessary for the Sullair MBT-6.The double seals retain theireffectiveness for the life of the packing.

One-Year Limited WarrantyAll tamper parts are warranted forone year against manufacturingdefects. Additionally, should anypart, excluding the butt andbuttclamp screw, wear out duringnormal operation, it is covered bySullair’s exclusive warranty.
